Tablet Recommend for Autistic Son Please - General Topics

Hi
Please can you all help with android tablet recommendations. I have google searched but there are so many that it is overwhelming.
Its for my son, he is autistic and has limited language, he relies on his current tablet a LOT but it is almost obsolete. So managing to choose one with the right criteria is completely crucial to me and that’s why I wanted to ask you experienced people.
My criteria is this, in order of importance:
1. Needs to be mainstream manufacturer. This so I can buy spare screens when they get damaged, extra batteries etc for as long as possible with availability (I know battery fitting is usually a solder job thats fine). Also, for OS-updates if needed.
2. Needs to be easily root-able. I am not great at this kind of stuff but need to root (easily) so that I can backup the entire thing easier and also use apps such as link2SD. Needs to be fairly idiot-proof rooting.
3. Needs to be TWRP compatible (see above, he can mess up stuff on the tablet so having lots of backup points helps me a LOT).
4. Min 16GB memory if its with a good SD card slot (to use Link2SD for apps), otherwise probably 64GB minimum. He has a lot of apps to go on it!!
5. Around 8inch in size. Bigger screen makes them easier to break so 8 inch is ideal as an upgrade from his current 7 inch. I could maybe push to 10 inch if thats whats needed for the other criteria but would rather 8 inch for toughness.
6. After-market rubber bumpers need to be available, though I think they are for all the major brands from what I have seen.
Please, any help at all would be appreciated. I can google up a model and see it’s the size and GB but then spend a while researching if it can be rooted and then if there is a TWRP and it takes a while and I keep ending up back at square-one. Hopefully you folks who know so much more than me will be better equipped to say what tablet fits my criteria.
Thank you so much for your time. Much much appreciated.
Alex

Please any suggestions at all would be appreciated even if just a starting point.

7" Touch Screen Google Android Device

Good Afternoon Everyone.
I appologise if I am not allowed to post this here but I thought XDA-Developers would be a great place to come for this.
I am thinking of retailing a Google Android 7" Touch Screen Device.
I am still waiting for some more information and some tests to come back to me but I have got the basic specification and some pictures of the device and I was wondering if I can get some thoughts back from other members here.
I have currently setup a survey at: http://www.dhcd.co.uk/surveys/AndroidTouchDevice.aspx
If some of you could take a look and leave you thoughts that would be great.
I am currently talking with the factory because I beleieve that the Ram needs doubling, the processor needs increasing and the Storage capacity needs improving alot other than that I personally think its a great device but would love some feedback on it.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Max
More like pentuple the RAM. Current Android phones have about 512 MB of RAM [and that's phones not tablets], and processors of 1GHZ.
Actually, i looked at this device at ebay yesterday while looking for an ebook reader. Looks nice but having around 384-512MB RAM would definitely help with web browsing. The CPU could be a bit faster but even as it is it should be able to handle ebooks and www well enough. A few MHz more would be nice extra for games and media but it's not that critical in my opinion.
What don't like is the proprietary connector. It would be much better if there was a standard miniUSB for recharging and copying files over to the device.
I don't have any complaints about storage memory - 4GB might not be much today but it's more than enough for your apps and SDHC card slot means almost unlimited storage space for everything else. So i'd say leave the internal memory as it is.
The overall design looks nice. I especially like the fact that it isn't a straight ipad clone. Okay, ipad may look nice but its knock-offs rarely do.
However it seems that someone didn't think the screen size trough. 800x480 screen is too narrow for this device size and leaves ugly thick black borders at the sides. having a 800x600 screen put into that thing would be really sweet It would also greatly improve ebook reading experience in portrait mode (a few more words per line).
The stated price seems fair, especially if it would remain the same after upgrades (sorry, chose "High price" in survey by mistake ).
From what i read, these devices run android 1.6. It would be really great if they got 2.x upgrade along with upgraded specs since more and more apps require android 2.
Anyway, for now i'm sticking with my old TC1100 tabletPC as books and pdf docs reader but if you manage to get this device upgraded it might be a nice lightweight alternative to the full-featured tabletPC.
Thanks for the feedback all very helpful.
I am taking what is said back to the factory and hopefully I can get the device upgraded.
Regards,
Max
Yeah I think if you bump up the specs as suggested above (ROM memory especially), you'll probably move some at the price you mentioned in the survey. However, I think you'll need to be sure to play up the fact that your device does have the real Android on it...there's Chinese/Taiwanese "KiRF" (knockoff) hardware out there that looks like a full featured device, but is running a home-brew Android look-alike OS, with far less features...don't want yours getting confused with those

[Q] Tablet vs Smartphone: Which one would you get?

I don't know which one to choose. .
kindly help me by telling me which one is better or provide a list of pros and cons .
Thank you
tablet is more usefull and it's bigger, more apps
my opinion tablet
I would personally choose a smartphone and a laptop, but it would depend on what I'm trying to accomplish. As an all-around useful device I don't think the tablet cuts it because it's not particularly portable (unless you don't mind carrying around a bag to put it in) and far more limited than a full-blown laptop. A tablet seems like an excellent around-the-house device as a substitute for a laptop in situations where you consume data rather than create it.

[Suggestions requested] Suggest an Android phone

I'm looking for an Android phone, which fulfils all the following expectations:
Can be rooted and the bootloader can be unlocked [may require manual unlocking]
at least 5" display [may be a little less but not much]
fluidly running Android 5 (may be unofficial but stable) Very likely upgrades to newer Android versions.
And as many as possible from the following ones [assume they're equally important]
Slide-out QWERTY keyboard available. May use BT, NFC, I2C but should be a slide-out. May be be attachable, may be an extra accessory
Drivers decent enough, so as to be able to set up some alternate OS with libhybris.
Easy to disassemble and replace broken parts, especially the broken screen
A notification LED or an AMOLED display (both appreciated but not required)
At least 16G of built-in space (32G appreciated)
Price is an important factor for me. But I use phones for a very long time, (have used my Nokia N900 for 5 years now) so I may treat the phone as a longer-term investment.
I'll probably be spending much time in the terminal, hence I care about the hardware keyboard. I'm a hacker soul I'll probably be using the Debian chroot, ssh, vnc. Linux user.
I don't really care that much about the looks of the phone My phones fall a lot on the floor, so I'm not for an ultrafragile phone.
I need a decent camera (my current 5MP/720p N900 is ok. I don't count the megapixels, more interested in overall quality). Must be a phone.
I'm a Google-skepticist, so have nothing against it shipping Cyanogen, AOSP, etc as long as the functionality remains the same.
I don't do selfies, don't care about the front camera at all.
I know about Fairphone2 which fulfils everything but the hardware keyboard (it was mentioned as a possible extension but nothing real appeared yet). And is quite expensive (525€, plus accessories). Is there any chance it gets cheaper during the next year?
Would you suggest anything? Feel free to ask about my attitude to some functionality, which I care about and which not at all.
Thanks!
Hi,
There's a dedicated thread for such questions here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620179
Many opinions to be had there, so I'll close this thread. :good:

Nexus 7 Alternative (not big 6) tablet with custom ROM (budget)

Hi Guys,
So I am looking at a new tablet to replace my trusted Nexus 7 car headunit infotainment system. I know there are a few threads, but this one is different due to the requirements.... Also, as I dont really have the money to go buying from the big 6 (Samsung, Sony, Lenovo etc etc) I am considering those which are not big names.
So I am looking for a budget device, preferably £75 or less, must have GPS, and preferably would have 3G/4G. I have seen a few on ebay, inclusive of "AllWinner" and a few others such as "ExcelVan" or "Teclast p70". or "XGody". Looking for 7inch Phablet, brings up a few options, but just not sure what to go with! Ideally I would prefer to use the later OS's, the idea of using 5.1 over 4.4 appeals more, but I dont know if really that is the best call, and if I would be gaining or losing anything particularly by choosing this.
I am looking for something faster with the same sort of specs, but preferably with 2GB RAM, or something which can be overclocked to exceed the Nexus 7 2012, not too bothered about HD or Camera or stuff like that....
I think I am pushing my luck a little, as I dont think such a thing exists really, other than the "Swipe Slate 8" which I cant find in the UK, and that has a slightly larger screen.... I also know the chinese units dont tend to get as much love on the Custom ROM front as the big names, but I just dont have the money to buy the big names, and really I want something relatively modern (last 2-3 years or so) with equal specs....
I just dont know if these allwinner 23 / 33 processors are any good....
If anyone has any idea's I would gratefully receive them! Alternatively, if you can suggest some other 2GB tablets in the budget category, I would appreciate it!

Trying to decide on a 6" phone

Hi everyone
I'm trying to find a cheap 6" android phone with expandable storage for everyday use (I'm generally on building sites), reasonable camera, use the kindle and readly app, I'm not looking to play 3D type games (apart from soduku and reversi!)
At the moment I have a Samsung S2 i9100 running LineageOS - great little phone, but for reading, it's way too small for my poor old eyes
I've been looking at phones on ebay, and hopefully this link will keep my search options:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Mobile-Sma...oid&rt=nc&Screen%20Size=6%2E0%22%20%26%20Over
Some of the phone manufacturers I've never heard of, my budget is only to £50 (not much I know) I'd want to root it, install TWRP and LineageOS.
Are there any manufacturers/models I should stay clear of?
Many thanks for any help
