[Q] Tablet vs Smartphone: Which one would you get? - General Questions and Answers

I don't know which one to choose. .
kindly help me by telling me which one is better or provide a list of pros and cons .
Thank you

tablet is more usefull and it's bigger, more apps
my opinion tablet

I would personally choose a smartphone and a laptop, but it would depend on what I'm trying to accomplish. As an all-around useful device I don't think the tablet cuts it because it's not particularly portable (unless you don't mind carrying around a bag to put it in) and far more limited than a full-blown laptop. A tablet seems like an excellent around-the-house device as a substitute for a laptop in situations where you consume data rather than create it.

Still deciding whether to buy

What's up XDA I'm in the market for a new Tablet or laptop for my wife
and I'm looking seriously at either the G-Tablet or a mid-range laptop.
The way I see it the pros and cons of the G-Tablet are as follows:
Pro:
Android.
I love android.
Hardware.
There aren't too many tablets out that have hardware on this level.
Cost:
Compared to other Tablets this one is very reasonable for the specs
Hackability
I'm not new to Android (as you can see from my sig)
so the prospect of hacking this thing is exciting.
Cool Factor
Let's face it moving from laptops to tablet is just plane cool.
Cons:
Android:
As much as I love Android and it can handle 95% of what she needs.
There is that 5% of remanding programs that really only work well on Windows.
Cost:
I can most likely get more powerful specs from a laptop at the $350-400 price range.
Even though it won't be as cool.
No physical keyboard.
So what sold you all on the G-Tablet? Are you happy with the purchase?
A tablet and a laptop are different solutions to computing problems. I have a desktop, a netbook, and the tablet. It's not overkill. The desktop is my primary gaming system and research station, since it's multi-monitored. The netbook is what I take when I expect to be producing text - hence, the need for the keyboard. The tablet is what I take when my primary goal is consuming information. I use it as an eReader (Google Books, Kindle, and RepliGo Reader for annotating PDFs).
It beats carrying around as many books as I previously did, and the on-screen keyboard works well enough for most things. I also have a flexible/foldable/rollable USB keyboard (purchased from K-Mart for $14.99) that I carry around with the tablet as well should I find myself in need of entering a lot of text. That doesn't happen that much, but it doesn't take too much space in my messenger bag.
The real questions are: what does your wife want to do with this device? Is she consuming or producing? What applications are crucial for her use? What does she do with those applications?
Without an understanding of what you and she want the device to do, I don't think we can answer it. Form follows function. Focus on the function. That's more important than any of the criteria you listed above when it comes to selecting the form your information device should take.
Very true. She would be mostly consuming.

Do you mind telling me what keyboard you have, model number, link or whatever? I want to get one that works for my GTab running TnT Lite (latest release).
Is it the one by Sakar?

[Q] Opinions? Best Android tablet to use for work?

Looking for some input on the best tablet to use for work? I work in construction so would be using mainly for Email, pdf viewing/editing, spreadsheets, picture taking for documentation/scanning. Preferably durable or otterbox or better cases available. Not a necessity, but would enjoy a decent amount of custom roms available. Im kinda new to the tablets and wondering if they would even be the best fit for my needs or if a netbook would be more suitable?
Thank you for your input, i really value the opinions of this community and would be lost without it.
Work and tablet don't come together. A tablet is a plaything and right now, change seems unlikely. The office or anything work related apps cannot begin to compare to the windows, Linux or osx counterparts. Get a netbook or ultrabook, both are better. A netbook atleast would be the same price as some tablets and others, cheaper.
$1 gets you a reply
Well in your opinion what are some of the best netbooks?
Motorola Xoom, Why??
first in this moment is cheap...
Roms... Tiamat team, make a perfect rom that give you high performance
the camara its awsome, you can take a photo to a doc, and you can read like a pdf
i dont know what's more...

If your looking for an android tablet, i'd say the Asus transformer would be cool, coz it has a real keyboard dock..
If it has to be a tablet and money is not an issue, check out the new transformer prime.
If you really want to work get a lightweight notebook.
Something like the acer timelinex 3830T.
Personally i think all netbooks are the same. All will either use an atom or a AMD counterpart (if they have one). Ram will probably be 2-4gb at best. I rarely see any if not any, none with cd/dvd drives. The best that really could be different is the motherboard and display. Personally i would go with a sony series s 13 ". Or a m11x if money wasn't such a problem.

Tablets worth the price?

So, feel free to flame, but I was writing something in another thread about tablets and the following came to mind:
Are tablets worth what we pay for them? Or are they just a marketing 're-deploy'? Allow me to expound:
Literally just before tablets careened onto the current computer scene(I know windows failed to promote tablets years back), there existed Netbooks. What it seems to me is that Netbooks are what the Industry thought we would want, A very portable yet still completely functional computer. As if even the small laptops weren't small enough...anyway. What I think happened is these things weren't cool enough. Maybe not powerful enough either, but that point should be moot because modern hardware can support this, as proven by current tablets.
I bought a Netbook and loved it, BUT I don't do a lot of gaming, just some simple web browsing, skyping, some skript kiddie type hacking. Plus for me the ultra small design was essential due to the nature of my work/constant traveling blah blah. This thing played movies, had the latest support of my favorite *nixes and performed pretty well except for battery life(typically a measly 3-4 hours) and of course gaming. Then came tablets; they look cooler, offer touch screen capabilities which sometimes feel as cumbersome as alt-tabbing, and have much much better battery and gaming performance, with the added benefit of blending nicely with the current "app store eco-structure".
Ahh, finally my point!!!:
A trend I see rising with tablets is the ability to add a keyboard and mouse....really? So what, then you have a laptop again? Or just the ability to go from cool-tech-but-not-too-nerdy tablet guy, to an fully functional device, and back again? I don't get it, other than the obvious shift to more clever marketing and selling us yet another device. On top of that I can use a USB 2.0 anything on my netbook, or be stuck with a proprietary connecter as with the Transform or iPad. Why would we choose this other than to look cool or because it's being shoved down our throats? What I see is a device (tablet) that is less fuctional, less productive, and more money compared to the more practical, just as portable netbook. I just miss the support of my Netbook, which I only paid $200 for....
Any thoughts...like maybe I'm a crazy hippy that needs to go live in a commune?
my points why my a500 is better use then a netbook,.
portability - no one can say its not easier to carry a slim tablet with a integrated keyboard
functionality - being able to do such things as stand in the street looking through the tab with the camera and seeing augmented reality deal, offer, new location without having to open startup, login and hold a massive block of hardware to do the same, and also a whole plethora of other uses such as barcode scanning, video making ,etc etc imaging scanning barcodes to find cheaper prices with a netbook,,,.,..one handed possible? probably not
battery life, my tablet can go 2days on a single charge with medium usage, a netbook would last a few hours,
i can do pretty much anything on my a500 i can do on my laptop.
i can access and use my laptop with screen and sound from anywhere else in the world.....from my a500 tablet (phonemypc)
also most usb devices connect to my a500 i think the only thing my lappy has that my tablet doesnt is a dvd drive, but the one in my lappy is dusty as hell as i download all my movies and move them between devices to play in diff' areas anyway. and then again my laptop has no gps. and only a front camera
if my laptop im writting this message with was a tablet it would probably be a crap one lol
no gps,no touchscreen, no back camera, front camera is weak no accelerometer no hdmi port lol etc etc
Major edit:
I see your point and don't want to convolute my thoughts too much. I just think a lot of the things you mentioned could be implemented, if the money was there.
You have pointed out that I have kind of answered my own questions...
Why tablets, because the phone market was so successfull and it allows for a lot of control on the developers end of the OS, so it's easier to implement the apps, market place as apposed to a traditional PC software sales setup.
r0zj0k3r said:
I think that depends on what you want to do. with my netbook, I literally could do everything I could on my computer because they were the same OS!!! That means, compiling software, video/audio editing, skype with group video , a similar app store could be integrated into a netbook style os (see ubuntu store). The industry just doesn't want to push it, and because it was easier to shift from phones to what amount to "really big phones"

Do you think that the new windows OS will allow you to switch between a Tablet and your Netbook without loose of functionality?

I think it would be a great way for windows to break away from the pack, but I don't think they want to do that now. They seem to be in the same mode as everyone else, lets follow the market instead of trying really new things.

[Q] Need a device for University

Hi all, I'm currently looking for a device to use at university, whether it be a netbook, chromebook or tablet, and was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help .
The things I am looking for are:
Must be able to open and edit Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, especially the note taking capability at the bottom of each slide in a PowerPoint file (such as on windows).
Must be able to access dropbox so I can transfer files between computers
Must be able to have a reliable keyboard/external keyboard that I can type comfortably on.
Must have a long battery life (around 6 hours+).
Must be fast to turn on and access.
Looking for around 10 inches in size
The ability to draw graphs is a bonus.
I am only operating on a budget of around $200-300 AUD, which I have found out to be very limiting when I browse in store, but if anyone can suggest a decent device that can fit my needs it would be greatly appreciated! Also, I have a galaxy s4 if that matters at all.

Although the budget is very limiting, you can find some low-end netbook which will fulfill the requirements, e.g. ASUS EEE PC X101CH with some free Linux. You will find some notebooks, it will give you much more power, but it will have larger dimensions and will not live for 6 hours - do you really need it?
If I need something for study, I would prefer the notebook. And forget the tablets, you will never be productive with it.
For some reason I've been told to stay off Netbooks, would a chromebook be just as good? If i did get a tablet I wouldn't download any games on it, my phone has heaps anyways

Which one?
I think the chromebook will do the same as netbook for you. It is just something new and yet unusual. So it depends what you prefer.
You will be more productive than with tablet, but less than with notebook.

Probably the Samsung chromebook, pretty cheap and it's slightly better than the Acer one in that price range. However, i may go to the netbook as chromebooks do not run Windows meaning powerpoint and word will be quite annoying to use. Is a notebook and netbook the same thing? Because I took a look at the Asus you mentioned and it seems like a decent device.

I agree it could be a pain using the chromebook for your purpose, which is not so standard device yet.
Netbook (chromebook) is not the same as notebook. E.g. the netbook I've listed has computation power like 8 year old notebook and a cheapest notebook you will buy today is a beast compared to any netbook.
But netbook may have a usual hard drive, you can store many things in it, and process the word or powerpoint documents in a standard way you are used to on a PC. But it will be very slow compared to the PC or notebook and it will not be possible to use more complex programs, e.g. some technical things or powerful graphic editors... BUT it will run for 6+ hours and is very small and quite cheap.

Alright thanks for the clarification! I'll look into some note books if i can find them, but I'm not really looking to run complex programs just Microsoft word/powerpoint and a few other applications really. Netbooks seem to have a much longer battery life as well from what I've seen.

Tablet Recommend for Autistic Son Please

Hi
Please can you all help with android tablet recommendations. I have google searched but there are so many that it is overwhelming.
Its for my son, he is autistic and has limited language, he relies on his current tablet a LOT but it is almost obsolete. So managing to choose one with the right criteria is completely crucial to me and that’s why I wanted to ask you experienced people.
My criteria is this, in order of importance:
1. Needs to be mainstream manufacturer. This so I can buy spare screens when they get damaged, extra batteries etc for as long as possible with availability (I know battery fitting is usually a solder job thats fine). Also, for OS-updates if needed.
2. Needs to be easily root-able. I am not great at this kind of stuff but need to root (easily) so that I can backup the entire thing easier and also use apps such as link2SD. Needs to be fairly idiot-proof rooting.
3. Needs to be TWRP compatible (see above, he can mess up stuff on the tablet so having lots of backup points helps me a LOT).
4. Min 16GB memory if its with a good SD card slot (to use Link2SD for apps), otherwise probably 64GB minimum. He has a lot of apps to go on it!!
5. Around 8inch in size. Bigger screen makes them easier to break so 8 inch is ideal as an upgrade from his current 7 inch. I could maybe push to 10 inch if thats whats needed for the other criteria but would rather 8 inch for toughness.
6. After-market rubber bumpers need to be available, though I think they are for all the major brands from what I have seen.
Please, any help at all would be appreciated. I can google up a model and see it’s the size and GB but then spend a while researching if it can be rooted and then if there is a TWRP and it takes a while and I keep ending up back at square-one. Hopefully you folks who know so much more than me will be better equipped to say what tablet fits my criteria.
Thank you so much for your time. Much much appreciated.
Alex
Please any suggestions at all would be appreciated even if just a starting point.
