How are you working around GMS App access? - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

Hey everyone I hope you are all well...
Thought I ask the majority of you as you may be using a P40 series device without Google Mobile Services, at first I did hit a roadblock with the transition from GMS to HMS but seems like its a workaround from this app to that app but just curious to know how everyone is adapting to the new GMS being HMS, how's your experience been thus far and what would you change?
It would be great to get a view to see if any of us are having similar journeys, I myself can now say I have adapted to 100% HMS and am looking forward to what is next from Huawei.
Looking forward to your responses

I really like it. I would just like it if there was an easier way of updating apps rather than. doing them manually.

Hey,
All in all i have found it easy enough. Im just waiting on contactless payment from Huawei. I never used it before but due to Covid I'm finding a growing need for this, but i always have my bank card so its not super important.

Myself included Google Pay is more of a novelty to me and only used it a few times, I intrigued with Huawei Pay and how it differs if it does, I am currently using a P40 Pro the experience has been no different to P30 Pro tbh I'd like to see app updates by themselves and not having to manually do so from multiple stores otherwise I am extremely impressed.

I bank with Barclays and NatWest which sucks as these apps don't work on HMS yet - web browser and/or keeping my P30 Pro on WiFi in the work draw as the alternative.
Pleasant discovers I wouldn't have come across if I wasn't forced away from Google's bits are YouTube Vanced (even got this running on my P30 Pro now) and DuckDuckGo...
Everything else I used I've managed to get working...
Still happy with my device, no intention on returning, but Huawei do need to pull their finger out and add some more bits to AppGallery... and do something about the suggested apps and adverts on the main page.

I think the banking apps could be bit of a sticking point from an outside view. But fantastic phone if you know what you are doing.

Please save me from carrying two phones around for the rest of my life...

Apologies if this is in the wrong area, although with the amount of paranoid posts I think it might be a good choice haha.
I have been improving security/backups for all of the stuff I use at home and out and about and I have come to the premature conclusion that I would want a separate phone for 2 factor and important apps to be secure. I have come here hoping someone can help save some real estate in my pants pockets...
The idea of having a separate phone for 2 factor and important stuff comes from my clickbait article level understanding of the state of android security. On an up to date phone (assuming timely released updates) are apps well isolated from each other? My main worry is that either passwords I enter are stolen or stuff in app memory is stolen (decrypted password manager file, 2 factor tokens e.t.c.). Say I install some dud app or visit a dodgy page with an exploit I am not patched for, could it fairly easily be seeing the password I enter into applications? or would it have to either run some form of root exploit or be granted device admin access for this?
More importantly, is there a history of android viruses/malware stealing 2 factor tokens and app passwords? or are my concerns a bit far fetched... If there are some good articles you know of that go over the trend of android malware, historical events and the criminals behind I would appreciate a link.
I hope the good people of XDA can re-instate my faith in the android ecosystem, I might be saved this terrible fate of carrying two phones.. Thanks in advance!
Small fix..

sorry as i cant find a nice link. But there is a solution. If you have a custom recovery and xposed framework installed, you can get some top notch firewalls. Even with just root also there are many firewalls

No more android updates for huawei phones?

Just read news on all major tech sites.
Google stopped all services with huawei.
www.androidcentral.com/huawei-losing-access-android-updates-google-support-after-trump-trade-ban
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Just read the same on Huawei Central site. Not very impressed with this and the future of my device.
I read it but I cannot believe it. I am sure we will be able to turn around this.
Honestly they might develop their own software. If they do, imagine how much they can do with the kirin processors.
---------- Post added at 04:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:40 AM ----------
After reading the article, it is clear that we will get updates, however the google services stuff will stop on HUAWEI phones.
So that means we will have to use Huawei appgallery store, which looks neat but has less apps than Google play store.
Well, **** Trump i guess.
I think this is the best time to ask Huawei to unlock the bootloaders again. With the unlocked bootloaders, we will be able to root and flash roms and google apps as we want. Huawei still sell the hardware. That will be a win-win situation

That's what's stopping me buying a P30 Pro. We're impressed with the P20 Pro but the bootloader thing is a problem.

Do you think they ever tried to listen to customers?
They only see their own interest.
There is no platform where developers can suggest them

I just hope they make their own software ( EMUI OS?) that almost behaves like IOS.
Custom roms are not optimized for kirin cpu anyway. Imo
you know how to read but you did not even read about which huawei phones is really affected only. it only affects future phones the current ones and old ones will still get access to google updates services and apps end of story.

No. "Existing customers won’t be affected, though without Google resuming business with Huawei, they also won’t get any further Android OS updates."

That is practically impossible.
1) I'm not sure any Google apps have the technical ability to be completely removed remotely (unless using some very nasty and very secret backdoor).
2) At this point, the only thing that prevents Google from working with Huawei in the trade ban, which has no power over past events/deals/devices, and only enforced from a certain date onward.

I mean, they can be remotely deactivated by removing the licenses for the current huawei phones. Besides, apparently HMS will be a big deal for Google so let's see what happens.

I don't think they can can they?
I have Google apps on my fire TV which aren't approved, so not sure.
Maybe if they can identify the device they could..
So glad my contract is up, I'm literally waiting for the 1+8

Thoughts on AppGallery / Petal Search - Find Apps?

Hey everyone hope you are all well and safe
So yesterday I was giving this some thought and then realised Huawei have jumped leaps and bounds with Petal Search (a few more tweaks and it will just as powerful) I am yet to come across an app that I am in need of that isn't AG / PS available, overall for me its great and can't wait for future products being hardware / software development from Huawei;
What is your honest opinion on AG / Petal Search FA -
Would you use a Huawei solely with AG?
What key Apps are you missing / needing?
Just trying to gauge an honest opinion on the new direction from Huawei Mobile Services?
Look forward to your replies, thanks in advance
I personally do not think you could fully use the device just using AG. I don't think that there is enough variety of apps on there. But petal search is a life saver. I think just getting the banking apps on an official market (yes don't @ me, I know they can phone clone over). But having worked in phone shops in the past, I know customers 80% of the tome do not know what they are doing. So having them on an official market where they can download them will be a massive help to the consumer bias.
been using the phone for 3 weeks now, honestly thought i would need GMs and i couldnt tell you what i need it for. Use the phone every day without GMS and i have every app including banking on it and its amazing. Only thing i use is youtube vance as an alternative for youtube.

app gallery is strong yes but not 100% currently, and petal search is the saviour of it, I had to download it seperatly however if they could pre install it into the EMUI that would make for a cleaner experience and I think I would have thought straight outta the box ooh wow 2 stores! but either way I agree that everything I use is available. I think they've ticked off the core of the apps, Socials, Maps, Email. I think that within time they will get bigger and a wider range in stock apps on both. How secure is petal search?

Definitely agree with you there bud I would have potential gone another route if it wasn't due down to Petal Search Find Apps, Huawei have started a great journey by themselves now and surely can only get bigger & better.
From my understanding Huawei use a 4 layer security on AG I have heard this is the same for Petal Search and I have also noticed recently when installing apps of PS a separate tabs appears which verify security.
No harms yet to date

That's good to know, ill have a dig around to see what the 4 layers are! I mean its a new app so time will develop it aswell, its a strong 8/10 right now! Ive seen lots of comments on the Huawei facebook page about it! so clearly all of their R&D is going into it!

Totally, have to appreciate Huawei's R&D they do invest heavily its one of the main reasons why I am a Huawei consumer!
Have just seen that TomTom maps has been added to AppGallery! Definitely a real competitor to the other big players!
PetalSearch is great, I wish some more of the premium versions of apps which you can get for free would appear in the search results! Good move from Huawei, lets just hope they don't rely on this and keep AppGallery updated!

Banking apps question.

Hi guys.
I keep seeing recurring themes on social media of people saying that they cannot get any banking apps over, banking apps not working.
Do people know what the issue is with this as my apps phone cloned over? I also just update them through Aurora store; Which just seems like a clone of play store.
Anyone else had these issue, or is it just the Huawei haters that would never even get a Huawei device poking there nose in?

Totally agree with you on this one I see so many negative comments but none are true especially as I am comfortable using a P40 Pro with access to Halifax, Barclays and Tesco Bank and 2 of those were Phone Cloned over with no issues a month in, would be a solid suggestion if Huawei went public with this as it could be make or break for a potential customer.
Me too, used clone and then aurora, no problems. Use Lloyds with no probs too. Well happy.
Most likely trolls spreading false information. I was using a banking app that wasn't on the Huawei App Gallery without any issues at all. It was recently added to the App Gallery, so that's even better I guess.

I agree with you, its people spreading misinformation. They are likely people that wouldn't even buy Huawei as they are probably wrapped up in an overprices phone that will have all the features of Huawei devices 3 years later.

The issue i feel is that people see Huawei as "bad guys" due to certain people not being a fan of the company. Purely on the fact that they do things better than most.

currently at the minute no - however I got in touch with them via facebook and they got back in touch to my surprise and they said they were going to pass it to the right department. If it doesn't work I will have to switch banks - for now im using the web browser as a solution.

the western media tbf is very 'shhhhh' misleading. I think if they had given a bigger picture & then be more informative I think the message would be clearer. Had I not known by actually researching into Huawei , I would have thought that all Huawei products would have been withdrawn off the UK market - However that's not the case , its just infrastructure not handsets/tablets.
