So.. after some tinkering (and massaging) I got the back cover off of my Captivate and was able to snap some pics of the innards for your viewing pleasure.
It's very similar to the standard Galaxy S, but some of the chips are laid out a bit differently, also, I apologize for the substandard picture quality, the only thing I have available to take pictures is a Blackberry Storm2 with an led flash.

That is (almost) as far as you can go. Theres one more PCB thats actually attached to the screen. Other than that, that main board and the sim/sd card board that sits on top of it are all thats there.
Edit: Here are some better pictures I was able to take this morning, unfortunately EVERY single picture I tried to take of the small Broadcom chip turned out like crap, or you could not see the writing on the chip. I could not read it myself, as the writing on the chip is extremely tiny, and I don't have a magnifying glass.

I just need a few more photos of the "in between" steps to give a better idea of what needs to be disconnected and how to get the back cover off.
And then there's the whole write up thing. -- Question about that, should I do a new "tear down" thread, I'll get a bit more in depth this time as well, I'll get all the chip numbers down (I found a magnifying glass!) so we can better cross reference what hardware we have in comparison to the Galaxy S i9000.
Will probably be a day or two until I can get it up, maybe longer depending on the write up.

I spilled a bit of an "adult beverage" on my Captivate last nite. Dang cat... Nothing went wrong w/the phone... save for the power button & the volume rocker... They were a bit... sticky.
I was able to get them cleaned up a bit using a razor blade & some alcohol wipes, but I'd love to be able to fully clean everything by disassembling the phone. I removed the 4 screws in the back beneath the battery cover, but got nowhere...
Can someone confirm if the fm radio chip is there?

There are actually 6 screws. Two are hidden underneath the sliding latch for the battery door.

Thats one of the purposes of tearing the phone down, I'm hoping to answer that question, or at least give enough people enough information to find out.

I don't know, it would definitely take someone much more skilled than I to fit the Front camera in.
The layout on the top is a tiny bit different, and it would require some changes to that as well as making space above the screen on the opposite side for the camera.
So, definitely NOT an easy job, if it is even possible.
if you look at that video of the teardown of a galaxy S i9000, it looks like the FFC is part of the rear facing camera module

at 2:59 in the video the camera is taken out, and at 3:07 she turns it over and you can see the front facing camera - does your rear facing camera look different (except for the obvious, missing that small black square with the FFC)?
if it's not different, except for the missing ft camera, i suspect these are all modular components so sammy could assemble them, as needed, to a customer's specs - which means, if someone can source that correct module w/ffc, and rip the driver and software for it from the i9000, that it'd be possible
The camera is identical, minutes the front facing piece, if course. The connection to the main board is the same as well.

My research shows that this chip does not do anything with FM radio so that is quite disappointing. Dammit AT&T! Always got gotta crap up a great phone. So now we don't get FM radio and we don't get the FFC.
if its the same camera module minus the FFC, im sure we will find some junk galaxys on ebay for parts soon enough, sum1 will develop a new front for us hopefully, pop in the new camera, get the ROM for it to work, and hope it can work. i am by no way an engineer or anything technically, so im not saying its plausable, just saying it could work if some1 knew how to do it.

This chip is the broadcom gps. He replied to the larryccf question.
So, I hope fm radio is here.

tks - it may be sammy did use a different gps chipset in the captivate
and btw, macro will magnify - take a high res shot, then open on your pc, depending on how hi res, i've had them open the picture in 25 X 22" or so sizes
and you can see mosquito footprints - had an Omega, a high end one that had a serial number on the backside way too small to read even with a 6X magnifier - had to have been laser etched
used a macro shot to read it - no joke

Perhaps it's only a ground plane or something, but there is a striking resemblance. We already know our Captivates have a little something special (in the back cover mechanism and inclusion of an Audience voice processing chip) that none of the other Galaxy S variants carry. Just speculation, but maybe there's a NFC radio hiding somewhere in our devices and that "ground plane" is actually the antenna. Perhaps if someone can discover what exactly the NFC antenna looks like (if it's internal, or integrated into the back cover of the Nexus S) we could make a better guess.
Unless someone else has a more reasonable explanation?
well thats an interseting theory. kind of a stretch though, any number of things it can be. i mean because the nexus has two contact points and has nfc doesnt mean that the points are related to nfc. i think that the cappy not having nfc is evidence that the backplate is not used for nfc. but we may have un used hardware, if i knew more about antennas and nfc and things i guess i could draw a better conclusion.
i can tell you that the round point on the cappy goes to ground through a plating on the back of the plastic over. i made no attempt to trace the contact that is on the board. if someone with knowledge in the area of antennas could coment that would be great but it's probably nothing.

If you tilt the back door at the right angle to the light, you can see a vague pattern (at least on mine) which looks like an RFID antenna in the recessed square on the back. Maybe it's something? Huh, but why would they put an rfid chip in a phone when android is supposed to start using nfc? My guess as to the contact points are wifi antenna contacts. I noticed I get amazing wifi pickup from routers far away. Much better than any other device I've used. Although, no signals loose reception quality when the back plate is off, wifi, cell, gps. Idk. Haven't tried bt though.

Doubt it's an actual RFID in the back cover. It's just that little patch on the back cover looks very much looks like an antenna.
Really, I don't think it can be something. A mp3 player I owned for 4 years have something like this too. It's most likely to be something like digital ground just to keep the voltage stable...

Hi I just got my new Note 5 from T-mobile and I noticed main camera is not dead center unlike my note 3 or other phones I have I went back to the T-mobile store and guys there noticed the same thing and we checked the one on the display none of them were centered actually any body know about this issue store guys did not want to exchange it because they are all like that they said. any body know anything about this issue?
Mine is the same way, went to the store and we looked at the displays... All the same. =/ The guy suggested it might be because it's their first unibody design, which sounds plausible.

Just confirmed with tmo tech that it should dead centered and mine sounds very loose clicking when moving phone around.
I think Samsung made some defective phones again lust like note 4 camera issues.
I believe it is due to the lens stabilization. If you turn the camera lens to face you, then open the camera app, the lens snaps to center, and visibly moves as the phone shakes.

You sir are absolutely correct! I found this out later last night as well.
Fwiw both mine and my wife's S6 have a lens that moves off center. It doesn't affect pictures or videos in the least.
Mine was recording clicking sound made by camera moving around as phone shake when recording video at tmobile store guys recorded video in storage room where it's very quiet I returned it I don't think I'll buy another note5 or any samsung phone untill they start to make good devices, my wife has the s6+ and does not any issues that I had with the note5.

What do you mean by this ISO?. I think you meant to say this is OIS which is moving camera lens assembly yes it should move and wiggle when not in use, when in use it should move to compansate motion and it shouldn't make clicking sound that records in to the video.
Foy your information if I was intrested to iphone I would buy one instead of an android device with or without OIS built-in $800.00 device premium price premium device I expected from samsun.

I don't understand how your camera lens is making such a clicking noise laud enough to be caught by your mic... If that's the case than that's really something wrong. And peopel are over reacting returning their phone for lensbnot being centered when that's normal if you want recordba video and while spinnign stop recording and you will see how the lens is not straight

Mine seems pretty OK. No rattling when I control the camera.
There might be some quality control issues. I've seen a few mention rattling but most say theirs is fine. So with that in mind it sounds like you risk having to RMA the device when you get it.
My camera was rattling too if I did not use the Quick Control Button to retreat the camera regularily because the camera is hitting the case even when shaking it.
I fixed it by placing a strip of duct tape under the camera and now it is silent.
The same problem with my flipcam.
Mine works fine.

My camera is firm and doesnt rattle, it does make some noise when the camera moves but thats to be expected I think.
Well, it seems as if it's going to be a crap shoot whether you get one that rattles or not? Too risky unless we get way more reviews saying that it doesn't rattle.

Difficult to say with such a small sample size.
Could be 1%, 5%, 20%, 50% or 90% with issues. The quality control might get better or the mechanism might just have that bad yields. So right now we have to assume it's either a small number of devices or first batch problems. I find it hard to believe they'd bring a device to market with glaring issues. You never know though.

Yes and it isn't comparable.
This is a quality control issue from the factory. I haven't heard anyone say it started rattling later (nor does it seem there would be time to start breaking the device through regular use unless it's sensitive and starts rattling from dust and debris).
The Fold worked fine at the factory and testing in a controlled environment did not reveal the fragility of the design. Otherwise we may as well bring up Note 7 too. That's also a design flaw.
Since not all models rattle it isn't necessarily a design flaw but one of quality and yields. Of course Asus is welcome to make a statement on what causes the issue.
Mine also rattle when put down on table and same with just tapping the screen. Otherwise it is good. Weird that no review mentioned this, not even tech tablets. If the phone didn't cost 570 euro, but 250 euro I would not mind, but I'm going to return it, it is unacceptable for the price.
Mine doesn't rattle when closed, but also doesn't open fully. It sits at a slight angle when open, so I have to press "volume up" for a second to straighten it. As far as I can see there's no calibration tool for camera angle. This might help solve both problems.

the camera opens a little whenever I was fast walking with the phone in my pocket or when I wear lose pants but I fixed it by adding 2 strips of tape behind the camera :/
I found out that the rattle is coming from the hinge at the side where the volume buttons are

To clarify - this is how it always is, but it happens - lets say once a day - camera just get _more_ loose by itself. I will create another video how it is all the time (it is still pretty bad in quiet environment) - but it will be harder to catch with one hand holding camera phone.

Can other users of this phone confirm if it is a faulty unit or it is "normal" behaviour? Camera module seems to be wonky and loose, not firmly closed/locked. No reviewers mention this problem.

It's a spycam....no, just kidding, just kidding - it was reported to be a 3rd microphone for cutting out any background noise.
I've never seen one before - no one has - but I'm guessing it's a white hole.

Sorry, maybe my question wasn't as clear as it could have been.
I was questioning the cutout on top of the phone, next to the sim tray hole. Since found out that it's another microphone, used in the 'sound focus' (or zoom sound) feature.

I understood you correctly. Next to the sim tray hole to me is the speaker. The device to my knowledge has stereo speakers, as S10, but since the earpiece cutout is so small, I don't think Samsung would make it a speaker as it is on S10.
One mic is on top, another one is at the bottom and another one(Sound focus mic?) is located next to the 3 camera lenses(on the edge of the camera housing/frame) - can't find that video that showed the location of the mic next to cameras

Sorry dude, the video you're talking about doesn't exist, there's no mic next to or anywhere near the camera array.
The cutout in question is absolutely a mic, and the earpiece does indeed doubles as the secondary speaker.

This is getting more confusing by the minute, even Sammobile seem confused, having updated their story on this twice already.
Some Youtube reviewers saying yes, others saying no, a lot of fake news floating around this feature.
Will just have to wait till I hold it in my own 2 (or is it 3?) hands.

I was in Best Buy store and did try opening YouTube to hear the speakers. So the earpiece and the top hole are both speakers. Also on the white color(easier to spot), there is a small slit in the side of the 3 cameras frame(closed to the side where flash is) - I think it is the zoom mic

You're right, there now seems to be a consensus amongst the early reviewers, and posts by 'XDA' members such as yourself, who've seen it in person.
The mic in the camera frame slit is such an elegant work of engineering, that I can't understand why 'Samsung' wouldn't be shouting it from the rooftops, but yet it's nowhere mentioned in marketing or spec infographics.
I do wonder though whether it impacts (however slightly) on the waterproofing of the device, maybe the reason it didn't achieve the IP69 rating as earlier touted?

I was curious too about the speaker placement and mic's location when Samsung unveiled devices. I wanted the top hole to be IR Blaster, but at least we get nicer sound. I doubt the earpiece slit would be enough to act as an upper speaker, but they Samsung came up with the idea of making additional hole on top Oh and I do remember some years ago when Nokia came out with zoom mic in their phone, the mics pointed towards the object, so that might explain why Samsung had to make a slit in the camera frame. Now that I have seen Note 10 in person, I am happy that I pre-ordered it. I don't think I would have done it if Samsung wouldn't offer $600 trade in for my S10e. I really don't like the idea of buying expensive phones, let alone replace them every year.
