Software related: Speaker not working. - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

I rooted my pixel 3a (*Japanese version). Tried to install viper4android and failed many times. The only reason I rooted was to install viper. But since it did not work, I unrooted.
Then comes the June 2020 security patch. After a couple of days of installing the update, my speakerphone and alarm stopped working.
Now, I've I tried every tutorial to fix this (reboot, reinstall updates using ADB, factory reset, EVERYTHING)
After resetting the phone, the speakerphone worked a couple of times but stopped again in a few minutes.
I think that this is a software bug. Anyone has a way out for this?
Is this because I have some viper remnants from the failed installation? Or is this just a security patch bug?
Everything else is working fine except for the device backup (button grayed out).
Anyone else has the same problem or a solution/suggestion?
It would be really helpful.
*Japanese Version: The only difference is it has NFC-Felica function as well (osaifu keitai).

It's not a software bug - it's the damned speaker! There is a long thread with people who have had their speakers fail here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3a/help/notification-sound-ringing-alarms-t4006073 See my detailed post near the end of that thread.
My speaker failed too and I tried everything, including a factory reset (which removes the updates). I had it fixed under warranty at the authorized repair agent ubreakifix.com. It happens a LOT, ubreakifix told me, and they are very used to fixing it. Once they started the repair, it took about 15 minutes. Google was willing to replace the phone with a possibly/probably refurbished one but since my phone was in pristine condition, I opted for the local repair option instead.
Not sure what your warranty options are where you live, but it's a hardware problem. Do a factory reset if you want to confirm this. To test it, just go into settings and try to change your ringtone. When you pick a new ringtone, you should hear it played. But when the speaker is bad, you won't hear anything nor will the phone ever ring. My speaker died just four months after the phone was purchased directly from the Google store and the phone was never dropped or abused in any way.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I had actually read your post before posting this up.
Actually I have tried the factory reset as well as changing ringtones earlier, and it doesn't work. (But I think factory reset did not lower my security patch, should I flash an earlier factory image instead?)
I was just wondering how does a software update break a hardware. (Like literally within 2 days):/
Btw, there are no ubreakifix shops here, they only have SoftBank or NTT shops (official Google partners) where I can take my pixel to repair. I also went to a SoftBank shop to see what they say, and they asked to wait for a software update. (Another option was to let them send my phone to Google which costs 100$ minimum just to check!! even with a warranty!!) Not was the shop able to verify what issue it was. I think the speaker issue might not be common here.
Do you recommend flashing the system image before the June security patch?

None of the system updates would have caused the speaker to stop working. If they did, you would see this forum FULL of such posts! Many of us install the latest updates monthly - it's one of the major reasons to buy a pixel.
But the Pixel 3a has a history of speakers failing and the only way to fix it is to replace the speaker.
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=pixel+3a+speaker+stopped+working
If you do not have access to warranty repair, it's a fairly easy phone to open and work on. Here is a video of someone disassembling a pixel 3a:

The replacement speakers are available on aliexpress.com for less than $10 and looks like this:

Good luck - I hope you are able to fix it or get it fixed for you!

I would submit a support request directly to google. If you go into Settings->Support and scroll down to the bottom, you will see a 'Contact Us' option. Use that to open a support ticket and then the communication will be done by email.
Having gone through it, they will take you through basic troubleshooting steps, including doing a factory reset of your phone to confirm that the problem still exists. After this, they will tell you what your local warranty repair or replacement options are.
At the very least, you should be able to get a replacement phone (possibly refurbished) shipped to you at no charge. If you did not buy the phone from google, you will have to return the defective phone before they send the replacement. Here in the U.S., we have advanced replacement if we buy directly from google where they send the replacement phone before the defective one is sent back.
What the hell good is a warranty if you have to pay $100??? If you look at the thread that I linked above, you will see that many people have had the speaker fail. Mine failed after only months. Be glad that it happened while the phone is still under warranty.

[PROB] Call operation failed

I have a strange problem with my phone... in brief, sometimes when i get to make a call I get the notification above "The operation failed" before initiating the call. of course in this situation if somebody calls me, they will hear that my phone is ringing, but in fact it's not ringing on my side, and I can't know if somebody phoned me.
a soft reset solves the problem, and I can again make calls without problems... until my phone decides to go still without informing me... the only thing that makes me notice is when I get no calls for like 12 hours or more... I then check by calling somebody and get this "Operation failed" damned notification -sometimes only- (which means my phone doesn't go still after a regular period.
at the beginning of this year I asked a question on the Energy thread:

the normal band icon usually looks like this on my TP

but some times it turns into this shape:
a soft-reset fixes the normal icon.
however, I tried different Radios on different Energy ROMs but still the same tiny problem... anybody got a though about it?
ROM: Energy Phoenix2 Dec21
Radio: Raph 1.17.25.9
Network T-Mobile Germany

I don't see an icon change now, but the problem is more than an icon change anyway.
I tried the following, but the problem is still random (not regular):
flashing a stock ROM
flashing another Radio
trying another SIM of another provider
but the problem is still the same...
I recently tried removing the Security Unlock, and now the phone goes still sometimes, which means sometimes the call drops before initiating, but I don't get the "Operation failed" notification any more.
again, a soft reset solves the problem
I can't trust my phone now, especially is that I use it for my work and school... which means my colleagues will be angry with me if they call me but I don't answer.
I would really appreciate any help!
Device: HTC Touch Pro T7272
ROM: Energy sencity 21916 Dec.21
Radio: 1.14.25.35
Security Locked
PS I apologize if you think that this problem is not worth starting a new thread in this development forum.
The Operation Failed
I made a screen shot of this notification and I'm posting it here
Happy New Year to everybody
I feel your pain. I had a very similar problem with my Raphael (on TAEL ROM at time), only difference was anyone making incoming calls did not get ring tone they got phone off message from network. I would get same error message as your image if making call (sms worked sometimes but not always when calls would not)
My problem would occur once a day usually early hours of morning & once resolved once would probably be ok fro rest of day !
I could toggle radio off/on to fix it.
Tried different Settings SIMs, Networks, ROMs, Radios, HardSPL to no avail. I started using another phone for a few days & when I went back to the Raphael for a little playing around it was working 100% normally without issue & still is today (currently acting as modem for internet via GPRS).
Hope you have same luck as me as I found no answers here or googling !
thank you very much for your input.
what I did is to set my calls to forward to my landline phone after 10 seconds of ringing, just to be notified of calls when my phone is in this strange mood... however, I still can't be notified when somebody pays me a missed call, which happens with me often from my family due to that I live abroad.
I understand this is not a common problem, but once it happens, it becomes a pain in the a§.
the guarantee is supposed to expire after 3 months, but I still don't know how to explain this problem to them, since it's not happening on a regular time line.
I hope I'm not going to have to send it for repairing, as I believe this is a problem that can be solved easily... I just need to be pointed in the right direction
Use another phone for 5 days with current SIM, reflash SPL,ROM, radio ROM, give it a break for the 5 days then load it up & see what happens !
If you seill get no joy get it in to service before it is too late.
take it in when it is playing up, push for a replacement rather than repair as short warranty would not give you fair chance to evaluate repair & most repairs shops would only flash ROM as first step unless fortunate enough to encounter issues during short test after ROM flash.
Good luck, mines still working fine at moment !

[Q] Play store error RPC:S-7:AEC-0

I got my OnePlus one yesterday and all was good, installed a few apps from the playstore.
Then I updated play services and some firmware updates and get a 'RPC:S-7:AEC-0' error when I tried to install/update apps.
I've tried all the usual fixes, clearing data, removing accounts and rebooting and even a factory reset.
Still can't download any apps
Any ideas?

Same here! On my galaxy tab tab 10.1 and my galaxy S4.. Can not update or install apps anymore!
I got a notification saying my Play store services was out of date. Since you have a Galaxy Tab it probably isn't the firmware updates, did you get the same thing?
Same error on all my devices (Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S III, Onda V975m). I think, it's server bug
I'm chatting with a guy from Play customer services. When I told him I had a OnePlus One he asked me if that was an Android phone
Same issue here on my Note 3 and Nexus 7 (and OnePlus). Get ready because it may be a while. Took over two months when it happened to me back in January of this year. Nothing works. Just something from Google's server side. Don't even waste your time taking steps to try and correct it, has to come from their end. Hopefully it's faster than two months this time.

They never explained it to me. Just one day it started working about a week after I filed a BBB complaint. All they said when it started happening was something with their servers on certain Google accounts.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem since yesterday on my Note 3 and Nexus 7, I have tried everything new firmware, delete cache and data from play store and services framework, sign out and sign in and several other things but nothing seems to work. I hope they fix it soon

Nothing will work. You can try everything you can think of, but the fix is going to have to come from Google server side. All you're going to do is get frustrated. I can't tell you how many times I waned to throw my phone out the window when this happened to me earlier this year. We'll just have to wait and try and keep calm, lol.

That's all we can do is contact them and let them know. Believe me, it is no fun and I feel for anyone who goes through this.
I contacted them last night.

Alternatively, open your Play Store, press menu, then select "help". There will be a "contact us" option in the top right. (For US users anyhow. Not sure for other regions) You can request to have them call you.

I have a ticket raised as well. The customer service rep asked me to send some screen shots of the issue, we'll see what happens.
Same here on all my devices.
It sucks; I reset and install an fresh rom ... I have no app now .... Grrrr
I have this on my GNote 2 (Verizon) as of last night; never heard of it before and the dearth of information on the internet indicates it is a pretty obscure problem. I have my phone backed up via TiBu, so I am not too fraught. Support had me factory reset the phone, no dice -- even other accounts can't instal anything.
Left with a phone with no apps, I activated an old iPhone 4s that was one of my kids before the last round of hand me downs. Surprisingly not awful, but the screen is a postage stamp. Boy, do I miss 4G.

Nexus 5 freezing, screen acting up, camera unresponsive, WiFi stuck on 'turning on'?

Hi all, new member here, so apologies for any mistakes I make.
A friend of mine has passed on to me his Nexus 5 (2013), stating that there were a number of issues he was having with it. After using the device myself for a couple days I can confirm that the following issues are present:
- The screen will sporadically freeze and become unresponsive to any touch input, and the only way to solve this is to lock the device and unlock it again. The time between instances of this is random.
- The screen will occasionally cut to black, but the display is still active (i.e. you can only see the backlight). This happens for a number of seconds before returning to normal on it's own.
- The camera is completely unresponsive/broken (See picture 1 below). Possible loose connection?
- The WiFi is stuck on 'turning WiFi on' in the settings, and stuck at searching for networks in the notification bar(See pictures 2 & 3 below).
The device was dropped at some point in the past, but the damage is typical (See picture 4 below) and I see no immediate reason why this damage should cause these issues in particular, but I'm by no means an expert, hence why I'm here. =) The device has only been dropped one time, and has not suffered any other damage, including water damage.
My first instinct was to boot into recovery mode (where it should be noted that the freezing and display issues I mentioned above didn't occur, leading me to believe it is more of a software issue?) and clear the cache partition, which did not solve the issue, and neither did a full factory reset.
So, with all that being said, what would you guys suggest? Should I try flashing the factory image to see if that works? Rooting? Flashing a custom ROM? Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
If you require any additional information let me know and I'll happily oblige.
Thanks in advance guys!

It could be the motherboard or screen. You won't know for sure until you replace one or the other.
The wifi chips do fail on the Nexus 5. I a motherboard that also tries to turn on wifi but turns itself off after a few minutes.

My first thought was that it was a hardware issue to begin with, but due to the sporadic nature of the issues (excluding the camera obviously), and the fact that it didn't happen whilst in the recovery menu, I'm more inclined to believe it to be a software issue? I could be wrong of course, I'm just wondering if it's worth flashing the factory image on to see if that solves the issue?
You may as well flash the stock image and see what happens.
The lines showing on the screen does not look like a software issue to me.

Those lines are what appear when I open the camera, they're not there otherwise. THAT is almost definitely a hardware issue, granted.
I have a Nexus 5 that has the wifi issue. I flashed a bunch of different Android versions (like Android 7 and 6.0) which none have worked. At one point I opened my Nexus 5 and left it like that for about a month, then afterwards I assembled it back together and the wifi worked for a little bit and then went back to its broken state. I've concluded that it is a hardware issue since data was working fine and was the only way I could get internet on my phone.

Hmm. I have to be be honest after looking online it appears that wifi failure is a somewhat common issue on the Nexus 5 devices. It has to be a hardware based problem it would seem.

Question Stuttering Issues on Just-Recived Red Magic Pro 7

Fired the phone up to find even the simplest games (Candy Crush!) freeze for a second over and over (audio, also) while playing, never mind even trying to load Genshin Impact. Reset twice and still the same. It even affects YouTube vidoes, hell, ANY video. Red Magic US Canada site is wonky and very difficult to get hold of someone or even a return form. Anyone else having this problem?

With gaming performance I don't have any issue and no stuttering at all. Are you running the game with game space switch on?
What is btw your software version here in Europe it's NX709J_EUcommon_V4.08
Yes, Game Space, everything. Even videos stall. I think I just got a bad one, but getting hold of soemone to return is a nightmare. Hmmm...my version is NX709J_UNcommon_V3.08 with no option to upgrade.

hmm kinda weird i hope they provide the full rom for Global version on the site. or maybe a update with some fixes but we already know that the software support on redmagic phones are bad.
I THINK I finally figured it out. Once you set everything up and update apps, there is ANOTHER prompt to Finish Setting Up Your RedMagic Pro 7. If you hit that, it really doesn't do anything other than says it's finishing up, and after it's done THAT's when the stuttering begins on videos and games. Unfortunately, the prompt keeps popping up daily, which you can dismiss but only for the day, as it rears its head the next day. Anyway, working fine now and I really like the phone. But beware, good luck getting anything other than canned responses from the Nubia support line. I kept insisting I wanted to return the phone and they kept asking additional questions about the make/model, etc. which was just going to continue until the 2-week return period was up. If anyone discovers a way to delete this prompt, please let me know.

Have you tried updating the phones the firmware on the site is newer version.
You can download the zip file on your phone and update the phone using the local software update mode.
Maybe you can clear the cache of the Google apps.
For me the Google play store system update is stuck on December update for now.
I've cleared the cache on just about everything. Stupid question, but where can I find the firmware version on my phone? I dont see it anywhere under About Phone

Go to system update and you will see the region and the version .
i had this same problem on my redmagic 7. I posted a youtube video that i had to show to the redmagic repair. I ended up sending it back for a refund and getting the redmagic 7 pro.
I finally figured it out, after the setup, it came back with a "Finish setting Up Your Phone" prompt, which caused the stuttering after reboot. There was nothing else to set up anyway, so I reinstalled, ignored the prompt and disabled the Android Set-Up function, buried somewhere deep. It worked and since the recent updates have had no problem whatsoever. Nubia help is awful they just keep repeating things and telling me they're working on it.

Question Galaxy Watch 4 Classic update issues

The October 10th update seems to have bricked my watch after a reboot, Is anyone else having issues with this update?
Can you please give more details?
A
Model Name like:
SM-R870 or SM-R875F or?
B
Status of device?
What means "bricked" in your case?
You can do Factory Reset and start from scratch?
Best Regards
Sorry for the vagueness..
Model SM-R890
I took the update from October R8xxXXU1GVI3 unsure of the exact version
The problem:
I allowed the update and as the day progressed the watch was not responding well for example the transition/swipe to the calendar tile seemed to glitch by showing the appointment and then displaying black, I was able to swipe off back to the time tile and throughout the day it kept showing the notification shade when I would raise to wake. I decided to restart the watch. When I pressed the power button to restart it would not boot.
I let the watch charge overnight and tried to power it on again by pressing the power button, I then watched a few videos to try to get into fast boot, but nothing worked.
If I understand correct.
At the moment dead or halfdead... only black screen...
A
NO Fastboot
Be carefully...
B
We have only 2 Hardware Keys...
Hard Reset work for instance with hold BOTH Keys for few Seconds...
C
You can try on Charger... to hold both keys... to see if any kind of life sign...
D
If still black Screen... No power on...
Chance is very low to repair alone at home...

That is all correct.... I contacted Samsung Service the repair is 285 but they wanted me to trade the watch in and upgrade to the watch 5 pro for $200 I am not a happy customer
I've had 0 issues after the update.
Yeah I had issues updating, I had to try it three times, and now I have an issue where the screen almost never turns off and causes extreme battery drain as a result.
After update i get quick battery drain.Connection issue and today after restart my watch stuck in odin.
My battery died and the watch now seems to be bricked too... I also did the Oct undated. Don't think I had reset since the update was done....
Doesn't show any signs of charging even though the power share on my Note 20phone tells me it is charging. Tried various methods of charging and nothing.
Tried several different reset/hard rest methods and nothing... If this is a firmware issue then the only way we will get any results is to band together to get some results....
I have the SM-R890
The update went fine, and have been using it for about a week and a half.
The the battery seemed to die (while on the charging Puck) And it wont rest or even hard reset. Nothing.
Will try a new battery to see if it does anything...
My watch got bricked too yesterday
I have SM-R870 CHC come from China, after R870ZCU1GVI3 Oct 14 update my watch have been using well until yesterday I restarted the watch.
All symptoms are the same as you mentioned above, no lifesign

Thanks for your advice
I have already tried this method but nothing happened, not even Samsung logo appears
I plan to send it to Samsung service for repair.
Now I have more similar bricked cases from coolapk, their common behavior cann't connect to phone, keeping a black screen and there is no vibration while connecting to charger. One of them refered that his watch have been using well for a week after updated, one day watch suddenly vibrated then got bricked.
I asked them if they could press down the power key and back key at the same time to make hard set.Unfortunately, still no lifesign
There must be some problems in this version of the firmware, until now Samsung didn‘t issue announcements about it.
My English isn't all that good, it may be difficult to understand
Please direct them here so that we can come up with a way forward with everyone together. Otherwise Samsung will try to screw us....
We come from China, some of them may not know XDA...
I will try to translate new cases as much as possible to English then post here

Same issue, Galaxy Watch 4 bricked after manual power off no power on anymore. It's clear Samsung fault and wty MUST be extended by Samsung for all of you who has 1 year wty only! In my case I have 2 years. Nothing power them anymore even unplug battery doesn't help so nothing help at all. Bricked by Samsung wrong software R89xXXU1GVI3 and Samsung is fully responsible!
