LG G4 Short Battery Life - General Questions and Answers

Hello All, I have a LG G4 phone and the battery isn't lasting a full day with minimal use. About 6 months ago I bought a replacement battery and that did help extend battery life a little but still wasn't anything like the original battery life. A few weeks ago I thought maybe the replacement battery wasn't good quality or old so I bought a different one and am getting the same battery life.
I notice when I go into settings > battery > battery usage the 2 that have the highest percent of battery used is media and screen. When I click on media it says "included packages" are download manger, media storage, and downloads. I rarely download anything to my phone and if I do it's usually a small file that downloads quickly.
Does anyone know why media is using so much of a battery? Is there something else I need to look for that could be using a lot of battery? I was wondering if maybe there was an app running in the background or something that I can't see using my battery.
Any help or advice is much appreciated!

Larger capacity batteries

Has anyone tried one of these yet ? I have seen 1900mah ones on ebay but wonder if they really give you anything more over the stock battery.
Becareful they might be dangerous for your phone
I have seen someone complaning about over voltage. 1900mAh seems like a good option but it should be reliable as well.
I wouldn't trust a phone battery on eBay to do anything besides fry my phone.

Now now, let's be fair, it should at LEAST be able to fry your phone AND blow up in your pocket doing considerable bodily harm too.
1900 ECELL MAH Battery
got just about 16 hours hours from an Ecell 1900mah battery, I had screen brightness on more or less full capacity and Wifi enabled for around approximately 4 and a half hours before I disabled wifi and reduced screen brightness down to just above a quarter. Used the phone for browsing, 10-12 minute phone call, 25 mins of game play throughout the day which included samurai vengeance THD (ten minutes), N64oid emulator (FZERO and MarioKart) and and one full game of real football in 3D. Sent out a couple of texts and downloaded three apps.

Would you have got this out of the standard battery do you think.
A shame there aint a big extended battery like 3000-4000mah.

I've found that the 1900 battery gives you roughly around four and half extra hours than the 1500 battery. Reducing display brightness to just over a quarter and having wifi disabled along with moderate use of the phone will easily get you through the day with the 1900 battery. Have not seen any adverse effects from using the battery such as overheating either.
where we can find 1900 battery for O3D ?
optimus 3d use some battery as optimus 2x ?
You can find the battery here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250854034507
but it looks a bit dodge.
Here you can find one with 1600mAh that looks less dodge:

do you think this battarys will make any problem on my phone ?

5000 mAh O.O

Has anyone used any Apps that claim to report battery capacity?
I have Battery Monitor Widget which claims the battery is only holding 1200mAh when on the battery it claims it should be 1500mAh.
I am dubious about its accuracy though as it doesn't seem able to report how much the battery is currently draining, although that should be more hardware specific than reading the battery capacity I would think?
It is kinda odd though as the first 15% seems to drain really fast and then it gets slower. I have literally seen it go from 100% to 96% in a few minutes doing nothing particularly taxing. Yet it can easily run for many hours web browsing with screen brightness on auto.
what is the widget called as mine drains very fast i have lost 16% in 2HRS 33. which is crazy.
Could using different launchers have a effect i wonder, this is a great phone but this sort of battery drain is plain crazy.
Edit . just found the one you mention and it says mine is a 1200 also , would be interesting to see if its accurate on a different phone.
It just seems odd that I can have it fully charged, go to bed with airplane mode on and its still down to 85% when I wake up despite nothing obvious using any CPU power. The big battery drain is always Android System, in fact I think that is ALWAYS the case even if I sit with the screen on which I always got the impression the screen was meant to be the biggest power drain on phones?
If I go to bed without airplane mode on its pretty much identical, which doesn't seem right at all considering it would be connected to WiFi and HSDPA (data mode off).
That said in ACTUAL use it seemed to last me a days use quite well. I'm just a bit puzzled that the widget claims the battery is not what its supposed to be and that the phone is showing as losing the first 20% really fast.
Don't get me wrong, the overall battery life to 0 seems not too bad, I am just concerned that perhaps there is something I can do to improve it further.

This external charger is good. I am using one. I use it for charging PSP as well.
It can charge 2 phones at same time. I tried the following combinations:
htc desire + aria, sgs + aria, 2x sgs, sgs+o3d..
one of the port is 1A, so it just feels like charging the phone off a normal charger. One this thou, this thing is heavy light a phone
if you are having short battery life check in the applications menu to see what apps are still running cuz i discovered the hard way that sometimes when you exit a 3d game the game doesnt actually quit and just sits in the background eating up 65% of your battery life. nova seems to be bad for it.

Battery too weak?

Hello XDA Community, i'm a HTC Sensation owner and i got it from service 3 days ago (the phone had really frequent shutdowns and the battery only lasted like 2 hours even without using it). Altough it doesn't have those problems i experience a really weak battery... As you can see from the photos i only had a 9h and 20 minutes lifetime from 100%, with only 2 hours and 7 minutes Screen On... Today i played games around 1 hour, used the internet 5-10 minutes , talked for like 1 minute and sent 5 messages. Is it normal that a 1520 mAh battery drains so fast?
I had the same problem when I first got my Sensation. Mine was used, so the battery was already a year old, but the phone was mint. I had the same terrible drain as you have, and I hardly used mine during the day. I rooted it and tried a few ROM's, and found that so far, anything based on Bruce's CM10 gives the best battery life. Will defiantly be try the Viper ROM today though.
If you don't want to root, I would pick up one of these:

I'm going to be trying one out myself.

I bought mine used too, it was used for 8 months, ill try to purchase an anker then... Thanks!
Hi I had same issue, tried Anker it was a good battery but I still needed more juice . I went to Mugen 3800mah battery. Now with HEAVY use I get more than 24 hours use out of one charge! I can't stress enough what a difference this battery has made for me! Yes it is expensive but for me it was worth every cent! I am a heavy user of my device and rely on it for everything from navigation to internet to gaming. This is a serious battery , it solved all my battery drain issues ! One thing through, it does make you're device a bit thicker but it still fits in pocket and feels good in my hand. For me, battery life is what I'm after so I don't at all mind the thicker phone I'm not in a beauty contest, I wanted results! This battery delivers. If your a moderate user you might not need so much juice but if you're a heavy user like I am this battery is the answer! It will not disappoint! If you find Anker is not providing enough juice and want more time on battery, do consider Mugen 3800mah. You won't worry about running out of battery Again! This battery with HEAVY use will still be on 100% two hours later!! My biggest issue was battery drain and this battery solved that problem for me. Like I mentioned its not for everyone because it will make device thicker but if you're serious about battery life it's the way to go! So depending on your use this might be an other option for you. If you use your device heavily, I highly recommend this battery. Best wishes to you!
Sent from HTC sensation, soff, 3.33 firmware, viper Rom, sense 4.1,kernel- pyd X stable 3.1 , Mugen 3800 mah battery. Please press thanks if I helped in anyway.
Thanks for the tip... I'm not such a heavy user of my phone but atm its still unbealiveable short on it's life. If i would take it out of the charger at 100% and play 1 and a half hour it will get to 1%...
Have you gave Anker a try? Most people here really like Anker and its given great extended battery. It's very affordable and I think it would be a wonderful solution to your issue.battery will make a big difference. You will see. My stock battery was absolutely pathetic. After I switched it was like night And day a huge difference! I believe Anker is only about 10 to 15 dollars and you won't regret switching. This is one solution to your issue. Best wishes. You can also try changing kernels and see if that helps but I think a Anker battery will really help in your situation.

Just thought I'd put my two cents in...
Whilst a higher capacity battery will help to some extent, IMHO it's like buying a bigger hose instead of fixing the hole in the bucket.
To clarify, I do actually own an Anker 1900mAh battery as well as the stock battery, but only because it was cheap and I was interested to see how much difference it made. I switch between the two on a regular basis. I can't deny the Anker certainly has a better cycle length than stock, but as I was already achieving well in excess of a full day's use on stock battery the benefit to me was negligible.
Another clarification, I'm not one of those people who will refuse to use their phone all day and then crow about their "amazing" battery life. You buy a smartphone because you want to use it. Mine is a work phone and as such is well used every day, making/receiving calls and texts, camera shots, VPN access etc. Then there's my personal use, web browsing, eBay, bluetooth audio every time I get in the car or work truck, e-books, games and so on. Not to labour the point but the phone comes off the charger at 6 am every work day and always has some life left when it goes back on the charger at 10 or 11 pm.
I guess, partly because of what I do for a job, I'm not a fan of "bigger hammer" solutions. There is a wealth of information here on XDA and you can greatly increase your battery life and cost you nothing but a bit of time spent reading. For a start I'd suggest looking into Battery Monitor Widget and/or Better Battery Stats (this thread).
I don't know if you're rooted or not, there are huge gains to be made with rooting and the possibilities that come with that. However, my wife's completely stock One S had absolutely atrocious battery life out of the box, and of course no possibility of increasing battery capacity, but with a few tweaks and better understanding she can still get a day's use out of her phone.
Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I see a lot of "get a bigger battery" responses to these questions when there are other options you can explore

What provider are you with (if any)?
I can appreciate a long-lasting battery better than most. In November I got jumped, beat up, and stabbed in the gut. Spent the night in the hospital, and only the huge 3300mAh battery in my Droid Razr Maxx kept me in touch with my family and friends that could help me. My current phone doesn't have a big battery, but I carry a spare.
so any of the top phone you can recommend?

[Q] Battery Life and 4200mAh Replaceable Battery

Hey guys, I just wanted to check if my battery life is abnormal or not. During normal usage, it's a bit hard for me to compare because I'm tending to use this phone a lot more than my previous one (Xperia Z1 Compact) but overnight, it would tend to lose at least 7-8%. Last night, I decided to try disabling auto-sync, put it on Power Saving and see what would happen (as well as closed all my apps through the regular task manager) and it dropped a whopping from 45% to 31%! Don't know how that happened.
When I go into the Power menu, I can see that Android System used 13%, Android OS and Screen used 10% each, Google Play Services used 9% and a few other apps and services used 4% or less. I got my Note Edge in Australia and is currently using it in the U.K but it's an international variant (SM-N915G) and is compatible with my current carrier (O2). I'm running stock 5.0.1 rooted. Do you guys think it's normal?
Another question regarding the battery: I have never owned a smartphone before that allowed me to switch batteries so I was wondering, would something like this or this be trustworthy? They seem really cheap and the capacity is 4200mAh whereas the stock battery is only 3000mAh. From your experience buying replaceable batteries, is it safe to use something like this (not to mention, they says they're compatible with the N9150 but didn't mention the N915G)? Thanks a lot in advance!

Thanks a lot. Just a quick noobie question, should I just backup with Titanium and then do a reset from inside the OS or should I do it through CWM (I already have a recent enough nand backup). Cheers!
I have had horrid battery life since lollipop upgrade. I want to go back to kit kat so bad. Primarily because of the battery and because notifications appear as overlays in some apps now instead of on the edge. The phone also is less responsive. I kick myself every day for upgrading.
Side note, are the batteries listed above supposed to actually fit inside the phone with no physical distortion?

I haven't had any major issues since upgrading to Lollipop, I was just hoping to squeeze a bit more out of the battery life. As for responsiveness, I'd say it's about the same, if not slightly better. You sound like you might also do with a factory reset. I just want to know if the factory reset option in the settings would do the job or if I should do it from the recovery.
As for the above batteries, I would imagine that they should fit perfectly since they were designed for the Note Edge but since I have had no experience with replaceable batteries, I would like to hear some confirmation.
I have mine on power saving mode and screen brightness on 43%. I get two full days usage so I only charge it once every two days.

Yeah, that was my concern. The only time I had a higher capacity battery fit snugly into a phone and work as intended was when I had my htc sensation. Anker made a higher mA battery that really worked. Everything now seems to be a sham. I will avoid it.
You can't fit more capacity of battery in the same size more than it's done by Samsung, otherwise they would do it. These are just fake numbers, I'm sure they're even less than the 3,000 made by Samsung.
As for the resetting your phone, settings option pretty much does the job.

Defective battery lots in Moto Z[high/extreme/erratic battery drain]

I think most of us had heard that Moto Z has a erratic/bizarrre/high batery drain in one or another way.
For my case it's a broken battery and i think it affect entire battery lots but Moto never accept and recall its.
I will share my experience.
According to this topic https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-Z/Moto-Z-extreme-battery-drain-after-7-1-1-update/td-p/3758100.
There is 100+ pages and numerous people affect by this issue around the world.
Me live Thailand. My Moto Z model is XT1650-03, Dual SIM.
I bought a second hand phone. It's come with Nougat 7.1.1
My previous phone is Xiaomi Mi4C that has a SOT around 3-4 hour [with 3000 mAh]
So when i got Moto Z. SOT is aound 3-4 hours. with 2600 mAh I think it normal. [My use is texting LINE, internet, on WIFI most of the time]
After 2 month I got update to Oreo.
I notice battery is drop fast than normal. I use better batery stat and waklock detector to nail down the cause.
But all is normal. Phone is almost in deep sleep. when use battery is drain aound 4-5%/Hr or more.
Then i start to google and found above topic and similar in another website.
Moto web moderator usuallly suggest these method
1. If happen after update please clear cache through Recovery
2. Do a baterry calibration [force restart then use turbo power supply to chardge till 100%, leave it overnight]
3. If above fail do a factory rest.
I try method 1. and fail
When use method 2 . It notice a weired battery percentage
- before force restart no matter % of battery when restart % will suddenly drop [e.g. 85-->45, 90-->2]
- this make me more curious
- after charge with turbo power adaptor to 100% and leave overnight. I try to force restart again. guess what the battery % is suddenly drop again .
- after try many time i come to conclude that "IT'S NOT A SOFTWARE. IT'S A HEARWARE ISSUE"
I go to Moto service center and tell them abou tthis battey drain.
They smile and said that "This happen frequenly. It's a battery defect"
My phone still under warranty so it's free.
FYI : if out of warranty cost is around 40$ [PS. In thailand] not too pricy for battey+labor cost [this phone is hardly to replace battery by yourself]
With new battery Moto Z is a monster in SOT. I got SOT 4 Hrs. with remain 45 % battery. With my usage i think 7-8 Hrs. is possible.
To sum up
Those who face a erratic/bizarrre/high batery drain.
Please try to do battery calibration first. But if you find suddenly drop in battery % after force restart. It's a broken battery.
Go to Moto service center ASAP.
No software update can fix this.
For 7.1.1 update that emerg this issue.
In my humble opinion i think no software can do damage to battery. In worst case, poor sotware will cuase huge waklock and baterry drain but not suddenly drop after restart.
It's maybe coincidence that this 7.1.1 update come out around the time that defect battery show the sign.
For further battery save up.
I found that in Oreo. without Root we can limit background activity.[this look like function in MIUI rom]
App that optimize for Oreo doesn't has this function.
So it's for old gen app that developer didn't update their code.

I just got a moto z and today I am seeing this exact same problem. i'm playing around with it now doing some other ways of calibrating. I am on Oreo and wondering if Nougat would be more battery friendly on these phones ?
Android version doesn't relate with this problem.
If you familiar with ADB. You can install Better battery stat and Wakelock detector without root. To identify app and process that consume battery.
For easy way. Android battery stat in setting is informative enough to this task.
You can summary all battery % lost and compare to your remaining battery. If your battery isn't broke. This value should be linear.
In my case there is missing % more than 20%

Yeah I am familiar with adb. But my problem is that, at this time anyhow, is that when I reboot I lose like 30% battery or something stupid which makes me think software. But after doing alot more reading at this point it would seem like it's a defective battery. That would be a first for me to have an android phone with a defective battery. So that's why at this point I'm just thinking software for the most part. Mainly cause i bricked my device when I tried to root it with oreo. I'm trying to downgrade now which I have done but now having modem issues.
I have a moto z too and i did the force restart and then the battery dropped from 38 to 6% i did it again and got up to 15 y did it again and stays in 6%, did it again and stays on six then un five and down, always with my usage, i got 3:40 at max of sot, and about 2 minutes-3, per % of battery, do you think is software or i shoud go to replace the battery

You have situation similar to me.
If you have warranty or financial isn't issue, don't hesitate to try replace battery.
You know this is actually quite funny to me. I had three replacement phones for this issue. I contacted Motorola and complained like crazy they charged me holding fees and crap till they got my defective model. Weirdest thing, every model had different battery life and performance. One model actually fried chargers one by one. So irritating, I thought Motorola was a good company. I told them, biggest issue I've had with phones in the past was them cracking, so I bought a shatter proof phone. Well whats the point of having a shatter proof display if I go through three of them in a year for faulty batteries?
Also it took about my 10th phone call for me to be transferred to someone that actually spoke proper English........
They couldn't even pronounce my name. My name is Adam....... (Aedum) lol
Called a supervisor, still couldn't pronounce my name...
After begging to speak to a manager for like an hr strait and being transferred to more people who could not speak proper English.
The last guy said ill transfer you to my manager in another building. The second he answered the phone I asked if they were even in the same country, nope lol. Regardless, it was weird, once I had made it to this person he was offering to send me free things, did the last phone replacement without a holding fee, etc.
Why am I still ranting.........
Point is, I used to love Motorola.
I do not anymore for this reason specifically lol.
Edit: Never guess what happened, my current Moto z force stopped charging.
I am never buying a Moto phone again.
4 out of 4 Motorola phones.....
Gonna take it apart now lol
I'm doubting my battery now as well. I've even factory reset and still have a big issue.
Standby time is ok, but with the screen on, my battery level drops like a rock. Almost 1% per minute. So I'd be lucky to get about an hour and a half or so on a full charge. (Of screen time) And that's not gaming or anything else battery intensive. Mostly just XDA Labs.
So after factory resetting and seeing no change, I'm convinced my battery itself is messed up. Luckily I have the Turbo power battery mod, so I can get through a day. But I'll be phone shopping soon.
Not going to be bitter, will probably get a Z3. Too many mods to buy anything else. Plus I've had the Moto X, N6, Moto Z and my wife has Z2 Play, so I'm a Moto fan! All good phones. This battery thing is my first issue.
I've had problems with my battery too. After 5 or 6 hours of a complete recharge, a new charge was needed. So I've bought a new one on Ebay and received yesterday.
Now, after replacement, my Moto Z is working absolutely fine, just like when was brand new. Today I've used some mods. Here in Brazil we have a digital TV mod with battery, but the recharging was off to test the new battery. Also play music for almost 2 hours with Moto Speaker, that doesn't have a internal battery.
And now, 11 hours after last charging there's 36% remaining, with 6 hours estimated.
So I really recommend replace the battery.
@Tlucent could you say me further information about the battery replacement?
I bought a Moto Z from LightInTheBox and I don't received yet, but I read some comments about this issue. When and if I have this issue I need know how resolve.
What the model/reference of battery do you bought?
The replacement is easy and trusted?
Thanks
Motorola worst support
I've got the same problem and sent my phone for repair after contact with Moto support and unsuccessful re-calibration of the battery. Few days later I got a reply that my phone wouldn't be repaired according to the warranty conditions because the screen glass has a small crack and this is the ostensible reason for the battery failure.
So all I have to say is GOOD BUY MOTOROLA!
Finally I have sent my motoZ for battery replacement last month.
It is working well now, battery can survive around half day (~10hrs) for my usage,
or ~5hrs in heavy use (nearly nonstop web, IM text, videos)
However since it is already out of warranty, it cost 60 bucks from local dealer.
If you find your phone (any) battery drain, standby and usage hrs shortened,
and, battery level dropped (alot) after power off then On,
that means the battery is already EOL (end-of-life).
The so-called recalilbate is usless !
Do factory-reset is meaningless !!!
That was the worst battery I have even seen, it just last for a year.
Some said the battery is from LG, holy ~
On ebay you can find the battery (GV30) for around $10,
but I do not recommend replace it yourselves.
Here are some tips to prolong Li-ion battery.
1. charge it whenever you can!
2. do not use up till 0% if possible, try charge it before it reach 40%
3. try charge it till 80% then unplug charger, this will extend its cycle life by not to wear out its recharge cycle too soon!
4. try keep your phone cool, high temperature will help chemical form, means shorten its life.
The problem is the battery cell's chemistry. it is crap. I've used my Z for about 9 months and now it is less than half capacity according to Accubattery and power can be cut if I do something intensive below 50%. Same thing had happened to my old midrange Moto G4. Stay away from Motorola phones.
I've recently had more than enough out of my Z2 play. Since day one it's lagged and froze often, even after wipes, resets and even reflashing the factory firmware. I think I just got a lemon, but didn't get it in before warranty expired.
My Z has been in a drawer all this time, with a fried battery. It even was shutting down at about 60 percent, which took about 30 minutes of screen time to get to from 100. So definitely my battery was no good.
So, instead of living with the awful Z2 I got, and let the warranty expire on, I'm getting my Z's battery replaced and the camera glass replaced. (it was scratched up bad.) For not much at all. 7 bucks for the battery and glass. Lol
I'm excited to get back on my Z! It was better than the Z2 anyway, even with none of my Z2 issues. My fingers are crossed that my battery life will go back to how it was when I first got my Z. That and the Turbo Power mod are all the battery life I need. :good:

where did you get the battery and glass for 7$ from?
I do not recommend more motorola among my friends and family
I have a Motorola Moto Maxx with about 3 years in use and its battery still works, with less capacity, but it does.
And I have a Moto Z XT1650-3, this with 11 months in use started with the known problem of the battery, component trash!
I have the Moto mod battery, and so I used it for about two more weeks since the internal battery problem started.
The internal battery 100% charge, and restart the device and the battery is already 30%, I connect it again to load and in a few minutes reaches 100% and we know what happens if I disconnect and restart.
The moto mod gives some autonomy, but once it runs out, or the internal battery has been completely discharged, there is no way that the device turns on again, until the charger is connected.
So, knowing that Lenovo does not sell this battery, I decided to take the risk of separating the screen to extract the damaged battery.
And already installed the generic battery that I bought (with the motorola logos) the device is functional again, the load remains decent, and ... only a small problem XD the generic battery is fatter than the original, so my screen in the lower area of the touch remains detached around almost 1 mm, and this is risky because in a bad move something can get stuck and detach the screen.
These days I will buy a second battery, but genuine, removal of damaged equipment, says the seller.
I leave you images of what the fake motorola battery looks like and the original battery photo.
Regards!
Same bad health battery here! Moto Z doing crazy things with the battery percentage.
I need to know if the brand new batteries are still erratic after some months or Motorola knows the issue and provides good-health ones? Is it worth it?
for those who replaced the battery, did they use original or alternative battery?
