Realme 5 Pro or Redmi Note 8 Pro? - Realme 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Going to buy one of the above phones very shortly.
1. Which one would you buy and why?
2. Which one offers best support /updates?
3. Which one would offer best second hand resale value in 12 to 18 months time? Thanks in advance!
RNP8 is 6/64gb while Realme is 8/128gb. I'm in Ireland but will probably buy from amazon Spain or Germany as its cheaper.

1. I have a Realme 5 Pro (as well as a Redmi Note 7 Pro and a Pocophone). I'd get the 5 Pro. I would always choose a Snapdragon over a MediaTek chip. The SD712 is an excellent mid-range chip. If you game, the MediaTek chip in the 8 Pro will be a LOT faster.
The camera in the 5 Pro is excellent. The Sony IMX586 sensor is far superior to the Samsung sensor in the 8 Pro.
I imagine the build quality would be similar.
2. Realme provides monthly patches for six months and then alternate months for another 18 months. Xiaomi has become tardy with updates. It's not unusual for an unmodded global phone to go three months between updates. My Pocophone went three months without updates, and my Redmi Note 7 Pro, which runs xiaomi.eu weeklies, hasn't received an update since 12th December. So much for weeklies; it's been nearly three months.
3. Xiaomi phones seem to hold their value better due to popularity, but it might depend on the region you're in.

Thanks for that. You've the note 7 but note 8 is supposed to be a step up again. Still undecided.
But resale is a big thing, I just sold my Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite on a site here in Ireland. Plenty of xiaomi phones on it but not one single Realme. So it's kinda swaying me towards xiaomi. Though I do like the more compact size of Realme.... Its a tough call either way.

I've got the RN7P, not the RN7. The RN7P has been the only Redmi to include an excellent Sony sensor and front and back Gorilla Glass 5 build quality. Yes, the RN8P should've been an improvement, but in my opinion, it's not.
With the disappointing Redmi Note 8 series, the silly K30 and the X2, I'm losing confidence in Xiaomi, which is why I'd go with Realme.

From looking online, the RN8P doesn't seem to disappoint, gets mostly positive reviews. As does the Realme. The big factor for me is resale though. Currently, there's no demand for second hand Realme phones here in Ireland but there is for xiaomi.

Yeah, resale demand is the same in Australia. If that's your main concern, get the RN8P.

Thanks for your advice. I've just been reading online that there's problems with android auto and the RN8P which is worrying as I use it all the time in my car.
I might go for the Mi 9 Lite, would it be better than the RN8P? You seem very knowledgeable on these things!!

I buy and sell a lot of phones cause I like to try them. It's an addiction. It's fun though.
I owned the 9 Lite for a while too. It's a beautiful phone. A gorgeous display, superb build quality and a great camera. The reason I had to sell it was that I can't stand under-display fingerprint sensors. I find them slower and inaccurate, and I prefer a tactile sensor. That said, the 9 Lite is about the fastest under-display sensor I've used. I tried face-unlock but wasn't a fan.
Another thing to consider is that notification LED is on the rear, which is kind of silly, as it means you need to put it face down if you want to see it. However, it's a beautiful multicoloured affair where the Xiaomi logo lights up. The 5 Pro doesn't have a notification LED anyway.
Yes, the 9 Lite is miles ahead of the RN8P and Realme 5 Pro. It's a very classy phone, and is cheap too. If it had a rear fingerprint sensor, it would've been one of my all-time favourites.

I always use a case cos I'm clumsy. But I've been reading that the notification Led is actually on the back of the mi 9 lite, is that true? If so, a case would only cover this up... Or else I get a clear case? What type case comes with it? Thanks

You need to re-read my post. I said the notification LED was on the back.
From memory, it comes with a clear silicone case. Perhaps search on YouTube for an unboxing clip.

Vivo Nex vs Oppo Find X

So now that the Oppo Find X is out, which phone do you think is the "bezel-less" king?
I actually prefer the Nex. The Find X looks better, but it only has the camera to unlock, and given the amount of times I unlock the phone a day, I don't trust the mechanism. You also need to popup for the rear cameras, and it seems to take a while to launch the viewfinder.
The popup for the Nex selfie camera is better unless you are constantly taking selfies during the day (who does that?). Also I prefer the under glass fingerprint scanner to facial recognition. And as a plus, it has an even bigger battery.
oppo find x would be slightly more expensive tho, but probably a better camera
but vivo get better audio, headphone jack!! and hifi

Just as you mentioned, for the looks & WOW factor,I think the OPPO Find X has the VIVO NEX beat hands down.
Otherwise, the only other area that is a definitive win for the Find X is more LTE Bands, but, there should be enough for most users on either phone.
http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=devi...l_sim_td-lte_cn_256gb__nex_ultimate__bbk_apex
http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=device&id=13498&c=oppo_find_x_dual_sim_td-lte_apac_pafm00__paft00
http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=device&s=compare
The NEX has the Find X beat in price & while I think I'd like using the Find X,the novelty of the slider would fade quickly (I don't lock my phone or take selfies,so,the Find X slider would get little use anyway).
Another area that the NEX is a better choice for me is that I don't care for the curved screen edges of the Find X,the NEX doesn't appear to have the curves.
If I'd waited one more day, perhaps I'd be in a wait & see mode, but,I ordered the NEX the very day before the Find X was introduced & don't regret it.
Who knows,by the time the Find X actually goes up for sale (8/2018),there may be another pop-up/slider or,another take on the full-screen phone ready to hit the street.
Yeah curve screens still annoy me cuz I do watch videos a bit and the image always appear narrower than it is. Prone to accidental side touches and the glares.. Ugh.
But of these two, I do think the slide mechanism is more refined, seamless in the Oppo instead of a tiny dongle of Vivo. However I think it's a mistake to put one too many functions/sensors in there. Cameras are fine, but to not have fps and have an intrinsic function like secure unlocking dependant on the mechanism is too much imo. I do like the ultra cool paint job of its back vs the Nex glared pattern which I don't care for.
I'm confident though the Nex is the right device for me due to features it has which the Oppo doesn't ie. headphone jack, DAC, fps Scanner(wish it was all lower screen like the concept tho), bigger battery, thinner, more affordable. Perfect solution for me would just be the Nex but having the same back paint application of the Oppo and I'd be a happy dude! Lol!
Much prefer Vivo Nex over Oppo.
1.Bigger battery capacity.
2.Audio jack 3.5 and DAC support
3.Prefer 3d scanner under screen as completely new technology than 3d iris recognition(i do have over 2.5 years both surface pro 4 and now surface book that have iris scanner recognition but think its much preferd to laptop/ultrabook over smartphone)
4.Im really fall in love with rainbow effect glass back on Vivo Nex
The Vivo for me.
I very much dislike curved screens after using the S7 Edge for few years. When I see a 'flat screen' phone like the Pixel 2, I get a bit jelly. I miss those...
I don't find the Oppo looks any more attractive than Vivo's to be honest. So I don't have anything going for it. But all the positives listed above are just cherry on top after looking at the prices that they will likely be entering the market at. I don't want to spend a grand on a phone, I'm not there in life yet unfortunately. And even if it wasn't that expensive, I don't think I'd even care all that much for the Find X. Mainly cos of that damn curve!
Yep just ordered mine. I was going wait for the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer but I can always get that later. I think this is definitely a much more user friendly phone as it is leveraging a new design element to make the screen better but not making it an absolute if it failed. The Oppo would be useless if the mechanism failed where as with the Nex I just can’t take selfies. Plus larger battery and underscreen fimgerprint scanner put it over the top. IMO

Looks like I overpaid by about 20% vs your cost, that's what I get for being impatient.
I would cancel, but, the seller (LIAOW) did state he'll ship out same or next day of initial availability (6/23-6/24) & it's a bit close to that point.
If there are delays (5 days or more) before I see a tracking number,I'll cancel & go w/TradingShenzen.

Heh, looks we're cross-posting here on the upcoming NEX treat. Maybe the excitement of getting the device?

So, I think we should be good...

For those of you that were against downgrading to the op6t, whats next for you?

Just curious as I couldn't give up the op6 features they dropped. I'm sure I'm not the only one that kept their op6.
Nope never stayed with it but opted to go for it due to the features and the fact that I didn't like the in screen fingerprint reader. Due to the spec being pretty much identical to me it was a no brainer and glad I did too, I love the OP6
Nope I still have mine. Fast as hell, 9-11 hours sot update enough for me and good Dev community. No reason to update. I usually update once a year and sell my current phone to get max value back for the next phone. As of right now, looks like maybe the op7. I think buying the T version is such a waste. The 6 will have the sd845 for almost a year when the 7 comes out. The 6T will have if for 4 or 5 months and it's already outdated. Buying the T version of OP are for the foolish and get caught up in the marketing.
Even if same price I would have gone for the 6 I have. No regrets. Can't live without headphone jack and led even though I don't use daily. It should be a must on all phones!
Having been a OP owner from the very start, I'm seriously considering jumping ship next year in favour of the galaxy s10, particularly as the headphone jack appears to be still incorporated in the S10 going by latest news. Who knows, maybe the OP7 will blow us all out of the water with a surprise return of 3.5mm jack.

just got OP6 and got rid of S9+. Buddy, you don't wanna do that, you'll be disappointed. Trust me, I know I'm talking about, I used to have a lot of Sammy's phone's for years.
Next one probably will be OP7. But can't live w/o LED and would like to get back headphone jack.
After owning both the 1+6 is the better device in my opinion. In display fingerprint scanner was unimpressive.

Traded my s9 for a op6 and some cash. Enjoy that lag
Next for me is a phone with bigger battery, 30m full charge, with Snapdragon 855.
I'm assuming it will be OP7. But let's see if they implement the new and improved version of dash charged.
I would like to have the larger battery of the 6T, but I bought the 6 because not having an LED Notification is unacceptable. Also, I prefer the proven fingerprint scanning technology.
I had the oneplus 6 for 5 months and it still works really great!
I will probably switch to the OnePlus 7 when it comes out

OP doing that for McLaren edition of 6t. I would imagine the same suppose to happen to OP7.
I know.
Unfortunately the new charger is "only" 30W, not 50W like Super VOOC. And that's what I was referring to. Still good, don't get me wrong.
Now I doubt they will do any upgrade to the charging system on OP7.

Anything with a dev community and root access. Would like a 3.5mm jack and LED.
Stayed with Oneplus 6 came from Samsung S9+. Love the oneplus 6.:good:
OP 6T is a minor upgrade . lets see what oneplus 7 brings perhaps more ram new processor and maybe new display with camera hole.
Also waiting for Samsung S10 how it turns out . if price high then will buy 512gb Note9. It would be cheaper then.
Zerolemon battery case when it is released.... The 6t with the lack of led notification light, in glass fingerprint scanner, and no headphone jack really is a downgrade. One good thing about the 6t is that it made the OP6 cheaper.
I went from a Oneplus 6 to a S9+, then a Note 9, and now a P20 Pro. I've just ordered another Oneplus 6. The Samsungs were returned, and the P20 Pro may be also.
The S9+'s edge screen is annoying (always giving false touches on the edges) and battery is rubbish, the Note 9 was great but slow (due to the Exynos SOC).
The P20 Pro is probably the best of the lot. It's fine, only real issue is the front fingerprint scanner that I keep on hitting when taking the phone out of my pocket. No headphone jack is a bit "meh", would be nice to charge and listen at the same time in bed of an evening, as I did with the Note 9. But, that's not a deal breaker. The battery isn't fantastic either, compared to the Note 9 or my old Mate 10 Pro, better than the S9+ by miles, though. It may be difficult to decide between the 1+6 and the P20 Pro...have to see. If Pie ever came to the P20 Pro, I'd be keeping it.
I have both OP6 and the S9+. I will say the S9+ with PIE beta has improved the s9+ alot for me. There is no lag, no accidental touches, ect... battery still isn't as good as my OP6 but its better than it was. I still prefer the OP but it's getting harder to choose for me.

Atleast for me, forum seems to be full of people spamming, asking same questions over and over again, not using search. Also crying non stop about everything, having bought the phone for 150usd, and expecting it to be better than say Pixel for 1000usd. I also agree that community is bad. But development is good, a lot of custom roms, been using Pie rom Pixel Experience, runs like stock, no bugs, great performance and battery life. But if i were you, i would wait for redmi note 7.. much nicer design, a bit better soc, and probably better camera. And its gonna cost basically the same, well maybe 10euros more. Its not really logical buying redmi note 5 at this time, when you have newer devices for the same price. Even redmi note 6 costs the same and is newer, but the only upgrade on it is notched screen. RN7 is a real upgrade tho
Ive been on xda forums since 2008 or so, and i would usually buy flagship devices for a ****load of money, and community was always nice. My last 2 devices, were cheap ones from china, leeco le pro 3 and RN5, and in both cases community was way worse.. So i came to conclusion, the cheaper the device is, the ****tier the community is.

Well, in my experience the worst community was with my old S7 edge, that was... my god, a little example: random people building kernels/roms full of bugs and crap, and stupid users paying to be able to use them.

I would go however i don't like the notch design. I can get used to it but why would i want to buy a phone so i can change the software right away?

I noticed that most of the people who are on xda are mostly indians. No offence to them but they are extremely dumb (not all of them, only the ones who ask retarded questions about this and that.). I can wait for note 7 however the 48mp camera is a gimmick.

Its not a gimmick. Its a really good sensor from samsung, and it uses pixel bining technology. Combining 4pixels into 1, resulting in waaayyy bigger pixels and way more light coming in, resulting in good quality 12mpx photos. RN7 is a midrange device for a budget phone price. You cant get sd660 with all the other goodies for this price anywhere else.

Interesting. I can go with this phone but the glass back, not my cup of tea.
Yes it can be replaceable, but why add a glass back if your phone has no wireless charging?
Also i found a discount on a note 5 pro in my store for just 100 bucks. It expires on 17 january. So what should i do? Buy it or wait?

Because design wise it looks much more premium than aluminium. Also they follow design line of other xiaomi phones. They released mi 8 series with glass back, and if you look at mi 8 light, youll see its the same design as RN7. So, you get new, modern design, and design wise it didnt cost xiaomi anything, because research and development was already done on mi 8 series. If they released another metal phone, looking just like RN5, people would be crying non stop.. They already were crying, because RN4, RN5, RN6 had basically same design..

Well, 100usd is a joke of a price. For this hardware, its a bargain. If you dont need that extra 10% performance, better low light photos and more modern design, go for it. You wont find rn7 for 100usd thats for sure.

Alright. I will look and see what i will buy.
The Redmi note 7 seems once again to be a very good phone for the price.
I am very happy with the RN5, updates are regular and I don't matter about dumb people who are always complaining about nothing. I'm not ready to change because I hope Android pie update as announced on the forum ( perhaps increasing photo and video mode) , but I am a bit afraid to loose call recording feature which is a very important functionality for me. As far I know, Android 9 doesn't allow it andI hope it will be still there thanks to Miui.
This is my first Xiaomi and I'm really impressed by the great quality of this smartphone.

Lost in the phone market.

Hello everyone,
After i send my Oneplus5T to repair, they offered me to repair it for almost 400€... since i do reject paying that much I'm apparently looking for a new phone.
Before One Plus I used HTC but they apparently are no nexistant on the market.
I really liked my One Plus 5t but after receiving this bad service from one plus I really tend to look for something new.
I really loved my 5t and still have two dash chargers - but with Huawei, Xiaomi and so on on the market now im totally lost.
Some things that are important to me are: big display, aluminium case, good camera, fast response time/speed but also at a decent price level including good service.
But as I said im entirely lost and hesitant to go back to One Plus.
The only "best phone for money" post i found here dates back to the release of the One Plus 5t.
Any suggestions/reviews would be appreciated.
Regards!
LG V20 sounds like an ideal replacement. I think HTC 10 may have a fast charge.

Hi,
You may have already heard that, but the best phone for money would be the Google Pixel 3a XL (because you like large screen lol).
And there's the Pixel 4a that'll be out in few weeks as leaks says. You should really check it out.
Selling point: flagship cam, stock Pixel experience, updates for 3 years.
Things you may not like: Plastic body
If you have any other questions, there are people in this thread ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846277 ) that are used to answer that kind of questions.
Have a good day
You might want to take a look at the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro.
It's got a 6.39 inches screen, aluminium case, decent camera and is supposed to be good value for money.
I don't know about Xiaomi's customer service record though.

Specs aren't everything, nothing made with Chinese hardware/software is worth getting. Chinese crap is just that......crap. it doesn't matter how high the specs are or what the end users experience is, they are still junk.

Question Pixel 6a Thoughts

As a Pixel 6 user, I don't like it. The compromises aren't worth the $150 less. It doesn't even have the A-Series touches (headphone jack, rear-fingerprint, etc.) like the 5a did. Sure, it's a solid phone, but if you're buying a phone for more than a year, it's definitely worth the extra 33%. Then again people buy the iPhone SE and that's literally the iPhone 8 with the A15.

And is an especially bad device for Indian audience. 6A is the first pixel that we are getting after 4a. and yet with 60hz screen and subpar specs.
Me from previous years would have complained, because obviously we have much better phones for cheaper but I can't understand how, out of all these phone companies which keep popping up every day, only 3 seem to care about compact phones (Samsung, Apple, Google).
I wanted to gift my father a new phone, he's been using a Poco F1 and he hates every phone that is larger than that.
What are the options now? Spend more to get the S21/22 or the iPhone 12/13 or just get the Pixel 6a because there are no other options.
Personally, having changed from a Poco X2 to an S22, at this point, I feel like larger phones are overrated.
In conclusion, I'm not saying the 6a is good, definitely not at that price, but it's the only one that matches the requirement.

I went to Best Buy today to look at the phone. The size is perfect. I'm trading in my Pixel 6 which I hate for the 6a and they are giving me a $250 trade-in. So for 2 bills I get the phone I want not the behemoth that I have now. Your father will love it, it's slimmer and noticeably smaller in the hand. I'd get it from Google but they don't offer a trade in for the P6.
Google really said **** you to the Indian Market .

Not a cracked screen just a slight crack in the back at the bottom. Hardly noticeable but there nonetheless.
I think they should've put Gorilla glass Victus or 5 and a glass back panel cause they both are very common in all mid-range phones! I ordered this phone only for the Camera because I love Gcam...

From everything I have seen and from every Jerryrig video, iterations of Gorilla Glass are meh at best. Glass is glass and it will break and it will scratch at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7. Shatter resistance improvements are marginal at best. Those fancy videos that Corning puts out are framed in the most ideal way possible. It's like taking a tall glass and slamming it on the table. It won't break because the bottom of the glass is reinforced. Take that same glass and slam it down on the lip where it is thinnest and it will shatter.
I just always get a glass screen protector and a case. Better safe than sorry and better have a phone than be without for days to weeks because of repairs.
I thought I would love the front thumb print scanner... but it is kind of annoying to have to press the power button first and then scan. On the bright side, there are fewer accidental triggers. But I dont know if that is worth it. Also, I miss the 3.5 headphone jack. :-(
Other than those things, it seems pretty similar to the 5a to me. Roughly the same battery drain. I am sure I will see some performance gain eventually. Just not noticing it yet.

I hear what you're saying. I had the Pixel 4XL and face unlock was amazing. I literally only had to pick up the phone and it would detect my face almost immediately.
You mentioned that it's annoying to have to press the power button first and then scan finger. You could set the phone to detect when you pick up or tap/touch the phone. That way, screen turns on and you can scan your finger without having to press the power button.
Update... this phone is in need of serious updates. I have lots of apps going non responsive and even the google assistant struggles. 5G is really bad and the GPS is occasionally confused. All around, I almost want to go back to my 5a.
The 6a feels cheap. I like the size of it, I don't care about 60 vs 90+ refresh rate, I wish finger print sensor was still on the back. The 6 and 6 pro feel great in the hand.
If I was going to buy a Pixel #A device, I'd get the 5A or 4A 5G. I wouldn't shell out for a 6a that's new. If I was to get a 6A, I'd wait a year and buy it dumb cheap used
Traded in my behemoth P6 (not even the pro) and will not look back. This feels great in the hand even with a minimal case which I use when I'm off the carpet of my home. The only thing that compares to this is the P5 which I never should have sold as quickly as I did. But I'm enjoying the P6a experience as of now.

Honestly it depends on what youre coming from. This is worlds more premium feeling vs the 3a and 4a. Never held the 4a 5g or 5a so I cant speak to those. I was also intending on just picking up a used 5a as I rarely ever buy the newest phone but the $300 trade in of my 3a + free buds was too good to pass up. The 3a XL was $479 new in 2019 and its no where near this nice or powerful.
Just my $.02 anyway
