Face Unlock Stopped Working After Covid 19 - Google Pixel 4 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

In this part of world (Asia), under the warth of Covid 19 virus (new Coronavirus), people are recommended to wear face mask when visiting public places.....
The big disadvantage of face unlock become obvious under this situation since I can no longer use any payment options without removing my face mask, or input the passcode.... I really miss the fingerprint sensor on my previous Pixel 3XL....
Maybe Google can come up with a facemask mode for face unlock?

This is a genius idea! It will find huge market here since now one will be find USD 850 by not wearing a face mask when enter public places like hospital!
N95 is pretty expensive and almost always out of stock here....

Probably it won't work with pixel unlock system because it must be able to scan your face in 3D. It could work with 2d systems.
Anyway, same problem here by wearing a scarf on my face when it's -20°C outside. And wearing also thick gloves, I can't easily unlock the pixel with the sequence or pin. I always end up by lowering the scarf a bit to be recognized.
All considered switching from fingerprint to face unlock in this kind of weather conditions is brilliant.

But it's possible it could work if it'll able to learn your face with it on.

I never tried... Is it possible? I mean, can you register your face with something on it?
Anyway I wouldn't do that because you would give less information about your face to the unlock system. IMHO it would make the unlock system less safe.

Maybe the last resort would be unlock by iris... At lest that's something we definitely needed when using a smartphone.
I will try if facelock can save my face with facemask on.... However maybe after that anyone with a facemask can unlock my phone....

Ask me any question about the 1+6

Like the title says, ask me whatever you want about the 1+6. This could be useful if you are considering to buy this amazing phone!
Debating between this phone and the mi mix 2s. By all counts the OP will have better development, and the headphone jack is a plus. The mix really has style and wireless charging. But unconfirmed reports that Android pay didn't work. Does Android pay work on a stock OP? Is it seen as certified on the Google store (can I play Netflix?). I don't plan on rooting or installing an after market ROM until later in life (if OP stops supporting it). Also how does OP handle the warranty in the US? Basically there isn't one on the mi mix 2s which is a big minus.
I'm coming from a LG V20 so I debate whether or not to upgrade at all considering it has almost everything lol

Q: Does Android pay work on a stock OP?
A: Yes! Google pay works with the Oneplus 6
Q: Is it seen as certified on the Google store?
A: Sort answer, yes. I didn't have any problems with the Google play store on my device.
Q: Can I play Netflix?
A: yes, Netflix works fine on my device.
Q: How does OP handle the warranty in the US?
A: I'm not sure, I haven't looked into this yet. I'll keep you up to date if I know more information about your question. But I'm pretty sure the warranty is alright.
Some extra information:
- Don't let the 1080p screen hold you back. The screen is gorgeous and you won't see the pixels.
- Screen on time is about 4 and a half hours with average usage.
- Dash charge does what it's promised to do.
- The Oneplus 6 is for my small hands a two handed phone.
I hope I answered all your questions well!
Best regards,
- ScoutFromEarth

nope, extremely easy, same as usual, just boot into OS and get into Developer Options and check OEM Unlocking (I also enable usb debugging and accept RSA key) then boot to fastboot (fastboot oem unlock)

I think your phone will lock a few minutes later when you turn the screen off. (Lock delay) You can turn this off in the settings to "Lock device when screen is off"

1. Works.
2. Always on display has been removed because it consumed to much power. It has been replaced with ambient display.
3. It also has been removed because the fingerprint sensor was too small according to Oneplus

Hi! I'm planning on making the OP6 my first OnePlus Device.
I also plan on getting the 6T later as well. I know that seems pointless. But I like have 2 major devices from a company for a years run..
Anyway, I know the phone is brand new and we have to see how things go, but, do you think there will be ROM support for this device? Given that it had the dual partition system (A&B style) would it be worthwhile to get the OP6 for ROMs right now?
My only want is to Root & ROM the phone. I have a LG G6 & V30, both from T-Mobile and have no dev supoort or ROMs. I like them both but I miss LineageOS and that's actually why I'm buying the OP6.
In your opinion, should I expect to see ROMs like LineageOS for OP6 or should I just wait and get the 6t.
I'm just trying to justify it to myself, especially now that the Nylon bumper case is sold out and that's the one I wanted. Ha, minor detail holding me back. Obviously I'll snag a Karbon Bumper hopefully..

Which is the best camera mode ?
I don't get my device till Monday or Tuesday. Would like to know if I can get daydream installed.
Are you rooted?
If so, are you willing to try to enable Google daydream?
Instructions found here
As long as you're comfortable with having to flash stock rom if something goes wrong.

Wow is that the reason they say they removed fp gestures? This didn't make sense because it's the same size as the fp sensor on the s8 and so she fp features work on those devices. So I wonder if this new sensor just doesn't support gestures or if it can be added back in from a custom rom?

First of all I must excuse me. Because I live in the Netherlands, my phone's language is set to Dutch.
First go to you security settings, then press the little settings circle. Now you should see some sort of a timer. Change this timer value to something more then 0 sec (instant lock). Ow and toggle the instant lock slider for when you press the power button

I just feel that face unlock is not very necessary , instead they should have put some othe premium feature.

When apple starts something, it becomes a fad, so good or bad , face unlock is here to stay, just like the iPhone X notch
I remember watching TV commercials on TV for some Motorola or Samsung phone promoting face unlock here in India maybe 5 or more year ago.
Fwiw, I've been really surprised by face unlock - it's really quick and simple. It's rare that it doesn't recognise me (so few false negatives) but I do find myself wondering how accurate it is - so how low is the false positive rate (it's not unlocked for anyone else yet but I've only tried it with a few people)

Face Unlock Not Secure (Unlocked by sister)

I've been using the face unlock feature on my Poco F1 since I got it. I'm running the latest XiaomiEU MIUI 10 Stable + Sphinx Kernel. No other mods.
Although it doesn't recognize the faces of my friends or relatives today I decided to test it with my sister who is 6 years younger and she managed to unlock it with her face.
I deleted my face data and took new one just in case and we tested again with the same result - she unlocked the phone again.
Face Unlock is not secure against relatives who look like you, test it out with your brothers/sisters just in case.
Yes, when you add your face in the settings there is a warning for tell you isn't secure.

I think you are posting on the wrong thread pal. :highfive:
It's because you have changed the kernel, which disables the infrared camera driver and thus making the face detection feature less secure. Test the same on factory ROM

Of course face data depends on the face so if you look alike with your sister it is really possible to unlock your phone that's why fingerprint scanner is more secured than face unlock.

That kernel doesn't disable IR CAMERA because it contains the driver for it!!! The only kernel available that can do that actually (as i know of)

isn't it common knowledge that all the face unlock out there for android isn't secure? even the mate 20 pro also got fooled by other similar looking people..

IR works, it lights up in red. I can also access the IR camera from MIUI Hidden Settings app.
There's the possibility that something else has been modified responsible for face unlock but I'll need to test.
I tried IR UNLOCK as well with sphinx kernel while covering front camera (not IR camera) and it's working phone unlocks... So no Front basic camera is working to unlock

Yes, my older brother opened it. I was taken aback, I am using the official stable roms.
Good thing I don't look closer to my relatives.
I also faced an issue where my phone can unlock by my brother and evey sister
Yesterday, miui 10 already rolled and I get updated. Technically, I and my brother already tested the Face unlock on miui 9.6.25 it definitely can't unlocked by my brother. After miui 10, my brother can easily unlocked my phone within 1 second,I was shocked we tested so many times and it's show same result. Even though my sister also can unlock it within one second,it is ridiculous.
The Face unlock become worst after miui 10 update.

In general, I read no face recognition. So covers all them.
the 3a and xl lack the proper cameras for a secure face unlock so it isnt included. if it was people could unlock your phone with a picture of you.

Thanks for the link I think it's solved now. Still not as good as the XZ1 scanner but I found that my thumb was slightly angled under normal circumstances so I added more prints and so far so good

As far as I can tell you have two unlock states. You can't use the power button to wake and then use the fingerprint sensor to unlock you can only use the fingerprint sensor to wake and unlock.
If you use the power button to wake then you have to use the pin method to unlock. This is what I've found.
I've found it's usually if the sensor gets dirty, which seems to be quite a lot. a quick clean usually gets it working straight away

I put my finger along the side of the phone while making my scans, for me it works almost every time now.
Previously I had my finger on a line away from the side using my thumb nail to nail direction now I use from top to middle which gives a better result

Clear your hand and the sensors place on the phone. I have no problems with it.
The latest android 11 update appears to turn fingerprint registration and usage into a better experience....
I've had problems with previous updates either lost functionality all together or sporadic usage.
Its nore more accurate than I ever remember.
Having lived with this for almost 2 years it looks like a combo of hardware and software. IE the software driver doesn't work fast enough to recognise the fingerprint and will occasionally miss a beat. I re-program after updating firmware updates and depending on how big the update is/ Security based and find I have to wipe fingerprints and PIN/Password too, for the fingerprint sensor to be re-discovered and then use the pre-setup program app which I have to use slowly 2 seconds between detections otherwise the app fails to detect the sensor and stops working again so I have to reboot the phone to re-detect and start programming the next fingerprint.
This handset has a bad fingerprint driver/app for the latest Android me thinks.
