Face recogition - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Hey
I am getting a 3a tomorrow. I see there is no facial recognition. It is not the end of the world, but it this something an update could enable in the future?

In apps? In the camera? For unlocking?

In general, I read no face recognition. So covers all them.

the 3a and xl lack the proper cameras for a secure face unlock so it isnt included. if it was people could unlock your phone with a picture of you.

Before I buy the Nexus 5, I would like to know whether or not it is possible to disable the Optical Image Stabilization feature?
Thanks!

i'm not 100% positive on this, but my guess would be no. this is a hardware feature of the optics and not controlled by software (again, i could be completely wrong)
the other question is why do you want to? have you looked in the pictures thread?

That's no good news.
I was thinking about implementing a "vision based" navigation system (really just a simply algorithm).

In the interest of helping future google-searchers who discover this thread as I did, know that with Android L and later the camera2 api allows for this functionality.

True. Note 8's main selling USP is Dual Camera and Portrait Mode. They are not going to do that.
It can be achieved by third party application though but not sure about samsung.

That and we already have selective focus. It sucks but they might upgrade it.
Selective focus does not suck, and was better implementation of bokeh than google camera 'snap then move phone upwards', for years.
The only difference between portrait mode and selective focus is that one you select amount of blurring beforehand, and the other one after the pic is taken. That and obvious differences (dual lens etc.)
Don't see how they can achieve that with our single lens.
And please, this is phone arena article after all. They just had a slow day and needed to make **** up. They either speculate or regurgitate old stuff and present it as something new, to fill news.

Face recognition unlock

How do I activate face unlock on this phone?
First time bought Vivo so far so good.
Is this a feature in the nex phone? I thought is fingerprint
I read somewhere and I'm certain I've seen in some reviews.
I'll have to double check this, face unlock gives me the opportunity show off the camera pop out. I'm not really a selfie guy.
dont think vivo has face unlock

Sounds like you're talking about the OPPO Find X.....
The only way to activate the FFC is by accessing the camera app & selecting the FFC.
The facial recognition sensors that are used on the IP-X & OPPO FIND X are not present on the NEX.

face unlock

I just feel that face unlock is not very necessary , instead they should have put some othe premium feature.

who knows, as an owner of xbox kinect I can imagine cool things like 3D avatars would be possible with this IR camera.

When apple starts something, it becomes a fad, so good or bad , face unlock is here to stay, just like the iPhone X notch
I remember watching TV commercials on TV for some Motorola or Samsung phone promoting face unlock here in India maybe 5 or more year ago.
Fwiw, I've been really surprised by face unlock - it's really quick and simple. It's rare that it doesn't recognise me (so few false negatives) but I do find myself wondering how accurate it is - so how low is the false positive rate (it's not unlocked for anyone else yet but I've only tried it with a few people)

Face Unlock Stopped Working After Covid 19

In this part of world (Asia), under the warth of Covid 19 virus (new Coronavirus), people are recommended to wear face mask when visiting public places.....
The big disadvantage of face unlock become obvious under this situation since I can no longer use any payment options without removing my face mask, or input the passcode.... I really miss the fingerprint sensor on my previous Pixel 3XL....
Maybe Google can come up with a facemask mode for face unlock?

This is a genius idea! It will find huge market here since now one will be find USD 850 by not wearing a face mask when enter public places like hospital!
N95 is pretty expensive and almost always out of stock here....

Probably it won't work with pixel unlock system because it must be able to scan your face in 3D. It could work with 2d systems.
Anyway, same problem here by wearing a scarf on my face when it's -20°C outside. And wearing also thick gloves, I can't easily unlock the pixel with the sequence or pin. I always end up by lowering the scarf a bit to be recognized.
All considered switching from fingerprint to face unlock in this kind of weather conditions is brilliant.

But it's possible it could work if it'll able to learn your face with it on.

I never tried... Is it possible? I mean, can you register your face with something on it?
Anyway I wouldn't do that because you would give less information about your face to the unlock system. IMHO it would make the unlock system less safe.
Maybe the last resort would be unlock by iris... At lest that's something we definitely needed when using a smartphone.
I will try if facelock can save my face with facemask on.... However maybe after that anyone with a facemask can unlock my phone....
