Face Unlock Not Secure (Unlocked by sister) - Xiaomi Poco F1 Guides, News, & Discussion

I've been using the face unlock feature on my Poco F1 since I got it. I'm running the latest XiaomiEU MIUI 10 Stable + Sphinx Kernel. No other mods.
Although it doesn't recognize the faces of my friends or relatives today I decided to test it with my sister who is 6 years younger and she managed to unlock it with her face.
I deleted my face data and took new one just in case and we tested again with the same result - she unlocked the phone again.
Face Unlock is not secure against relatives who look like you, test it out with your brothers/sisters just in case.

Yes, when you add your face in the settings there is a warning for tell you isn't secure.

I think you are posting on the wrong thread pal. :highfive:

It's because you have changed the kernel, which disables the infrared camera driver and thus making the face detection feature less secure. Test the same on factory ROM

Of course face data depends on the face so if you look alike with your sister it is really possible to unlock your phone that's why fingerprint scanner is more secured than face unlock.

That kernel doesn't disable IR CAMERA because it contains the driver for it!!! The only kernel available that can do that actually (as i know of)

isn't it common knowledge that all the face unlock out there for android isn't secure? even the mate 20 pro also got fooled by other similar looking people..

IR works, it lights up in red. I can also access the IR camera from MIUI Hidden Settings app.
There's the possibility that something else has been modified responsible for face unlock but I'll need to test.

I tried IR UNLOCK as well with sphinx kernel while covering front camera (not IR camera) and it's working phone unlocks... So no Front basic camera is working to unlock

Yes, my older brother opened it. I was taken aback, I am using the official stable roms.

Good thing I don't look closer to my relatives.

I also faced an issue where my phone can unlock by my brother and evey sister
Yesterday, miui 10 already rolled and I get updated. Technically, I and my brother already tested the Face unlock on miui 9.6.25 it definitely can't unlocked by my brother. After miui 10, my brother can easily unlocked my phone within 1 second,I was shocked we tested so many times and it's show same result. Even though my sister also can unlock it within one second,it is ridiculous.
The Face unlock become worst after miui 10 update.

Tips about Honor 8

I need Help, im going to buy a used honor 8 and I wold like to you guys to tell me the most comons problems so I can test!
Goods:
1 Nice look and hardware
2 Some nice features in EMUI, everyone won't agree. Like security safe and app, camera software, finger print gestures
Bads:
1: Nightmare for someone who want to customize. Custom ROMs available but still unofficial due to issues.
2: Updates not as frequent
3: EMUI, depending on your preferences, some people just despise it.
You guys clearly missed OP's question...
Edit,
To answer OP, this is a great article which covers buying a used phone in general: https://recraigslist.com/2013/03/how-to-buy-a-used-cell-phone/
Generally you should:
Start by rebooting the phone. There is a warning saying "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted" when booting up the phone. This means that the person has unlocked bootloader, most likely isn't using stock recovery and may be running non-official ROM. This might be a concern if rooting the phone isn't something you want to do.
Chech if IMEI isn't blacklisted using this tool: http://swappa.com/esn
Check if the device supports your provider by inserting your SIM and trying to make a test call/using data.
Check if the finger print sensor is working and check for any visible damage
Check the USB-C port if it isn't damaged and if possible, try plugging the phone in to see if charging works properly
Check back/front camera and video recording
That's about it, there aren't any specific problems that would happen only with Honor 8 to be honest.
Hope that helps.
I get the Honor 8, so far so good !!!

Ask me any question about the 1+6

Like the title says, ask me whatever you want about the 1+6. This could be useful if you are considering to buy this amazing phone!
Debating between this phone and the mi mix 2s. By all counts the OP will have better development, and the headphone jack is a plus. The mix really has style and wireless charging. But unconfirmed reports that Android pay didn't work. Does Android pay work on a stock OP? Is it seen as certified on the Google store (can I play Netflix?). I don't plan on rooting or installing an after market ROM until later in life (if OP stops supporting it). Also how does OP handle the warranty in the US? Basically there isn't one on the mi mix 2s which is a big minus.
I'm coming from a LG V20 so I debate whether or not to upgrade at all considering it has almost everything lol

Q: Does Android pay work on a stock OP?
A: Yes! Google pay works with the Oneplus 6
Q: Is it seen as certified on the Google store?
A: Sort answer, yes. I didn't have any problems with the Google play store on my device.
Q: Can I play Netflix?
A: yes, Netflix works fine on my device.
Q: How does OP handle the warranty in the US?
A: I'm not sure, I haven't looked into this yet. I'll keep you up to date if I know more information about your question. But I'm pretty sure the warranty is alright.
Some extra information:
- Don't let the 1080p screen hold you back. The screen is gorgeous and you won't see the pixels.
- Screen on time is about 4 and a half hours with average usage.
- Dash charge does what it's promised to do.
- The Oneplus 6 is for my small hands a two handed phone.
I hope I answered all your questions well!
Best regards,
- ScoutFromEarth

nope, extremely easy, same as usual, just boot into OS and get into Developer Options and check OEM Unlocking (I also enable usb debugging and accept RSA key) then boot to fastboot (fastboot oem unlock)

I think your phone will lock a few minutes later when you turn the screen off. (Lock delay) You can turn this off in the settings to "Lock device when screen is off"

1. Works.
2. Always on display has been removed because it consumed to much power. It has been replaced with ambient display.
3. It also has been removed because the fingerprint sensor was too small according to Oneplus

Hi! I'm planning on making the OP6 my first OnePlus Device.
I also plan on getting the 6T later as well. I know that seems pointless. But I like have 2 major devices from a company for a years run..
Anyway, I know the phone is brand new and we have to see how things go, but, do you think there will be ROM support for this device? Given that it had the dual partition system (A&B style) would it be worthwhile to get the OP6 for ROMs right now?
My only want is to Root & ROM the phone. I have a LG G6 & V30, both from T-Mobile and have no dev supoort or ROMs. I like them both but I miss LineageOS and that's actually why I'm buying the OP6.
In your opinion, should I expect to see ROMs like LineageOS for OP6 or should I just wait and get the 6t.
I'm just trying to justify it to myself, especially now that the Nylon bumper case is sold out and that's the one I wanted. Ha, minor detail holding me back. Obviously I'll snag a Karbon Bumper hopefully..

Which is the best camera mode ?
I don't get my device till Monday or Tuesday. Would like to know if I can get daydream installed.
Are you rooted?
If so, are you willing to try to enable Google daydream?

As long as you're comfortable with having to flash stock rom if something goes wrong.

Wow is that the reason they say they removed fp gestures? This didn't make sense because it's the same size as the fp sensor on the s8 and so she fp features work on those devices. So I wonder if this new sensor just doesn't support gestures or if it can be added back in from a custom rom?

First of all I must excuse me. Because I live in the Netherlands, my phone's language is set to Dutch.
First go to you security settings, then press the little settings circle. Now you should see some sort of a timer. Change this timer value to something more then 0 sec (instant lock). Ow and toggle the instant lock slider for when you press the power button

Unlock the phone with picture!!!

Hi , i had a bad surprise, i take my picture and i use it to unlock my pro p20, and it's working, can anyone try ? and what can we do to correct this?
long known issue - nothing
Close your eyes for face unlock. Bet you can't find a picture with your eyes closed
That is correct already. Nothing wrong. This is just how normal face unlock works since android 5. You want more secure one? Find one with 3d face unlock ie mi 8 Ee, mate 20 pro and ipx.

or even better, choose one with retina unlock. its harder to be fooled

regarding the new face unlock released in pixel 4

As we all know the recent pixel 4 only has face unlock, is there any possibility that will come into our custom ROMs? I don't mean to tell other biometric auth are not worthy, but a dedicated face unlock would mean we can completely avoid miui for good as the complete hardware can be properly utillised
This post is just a discussion if this is a possibility or not. Others who find it offense leave now.
No. The pixel 4 has the proper sensors for face unlock. Poco doesn't.

If mi 8 roms can be ported to poco f1 with different face unlock between both then why won't this be possible? (Mi 8 has a 3D face unlock similar to pixel4 or iphone, poco has 2D face unlock)
And other than the extra soli sensor i dont see anything else different in this case

Nope, mi 8 have the same face authentication like poco, mi 8 Explorer edition it's the unique xiaomi with 3d method. Whatever, you can't "port" a hardware feature, you only can adapt it to the hardware you have, but it's not the same, the pixel 4 got a very specific biometric hardware. You can see the same interface in the app, but this no supposed work as same.
My poco phone can be unlocked by my Brother and cousin brother with face unlock. It is not as secure as thought

The pixel 4 has 2 ir sensors (as does the iPhone X series) meaning it is capable of 3d face unlock. It's nothing to do with soli
As you will know, the F1 only has 1 ir sensor, allowing 2d face unlock but not 3d

I guess you are talking about custom ROMs as I am on stock MIUI and nobody else can unlock my device by using their face. I have tested multiple times and the results were the same.
To implement the softwares we don't need the hardwares as exact right? Maybe a few actions could be removed and just accept the 2d data alone?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it the ir implementation is proprietary - a xiaomi thing rather than being baked into Android. As such a custom rom would need to include the ir face recognition solution xiaomi developed, which isn't available to anyone else
Of course, the old camera based face unlock is still available, if that's if any use to you
I remember now, lineage os tried making a face unlock for pie and they got the libs for the ir camera, there was some legal issues and then they had to discard the development. That's why we won't get the ir camera unlock for any of custom ROM...

I am a new poco owner.
MIUI roms (non port) indeed has proper face unlocking process; it cant even unlock if my eyes are closed but in CRdroid (with the claim of IRcam working) still unlock the phone even when I close my eyes.
Android 10 removed face unlock.
If you needed face unlock, please use android pie. You can find the face unlock option inside smart lock.

no bro,in miui 10 and 11 (official) is not secure, my brother can unlock my phone, my bro and I have 9 years difference,
Guys can we implement a 3d unlock by using both the IR and camera so that we can some how port the pixel 4's unlock feature just by some tweaks. I know it will not be as good for unlocking in pitch dark atleast it can be implemented....?
Is anyone else having problems like "failure to enroll in facial unlock" upon entering the initial face set up screen? I am on pixel 4 rooted via magisk boot.img patch method and the current may security update.

Face Unlock Stopped Working After Covid 19

In this part of world (Asia), under the warth of Covid 19 virus (new Coronavirus), people are recommended to wear face mask when visiting public places.....
The big disadvantage of face unlock become obvious under this situation since I can no longer use any payment options without removing my face mask, or input the passcode.... I really miss the fingerprint sensor on my previous Pixel 3XL....
Maybe Google can come up with a facemask mode for face unlock?

Probably it won't work with pixel unlock system because it must be able to scan your face in 3D. It could work with 2d systems.
Anyway, same problem here by wearing a scarf on my face when it's -20°C outside. And wearing also thick gloves, I can't easily unlock the pixel with the sequence or pin. I always end up by lowering the scarf a bit to be recognized.
All considered switching from fingerprint to face unlock in this kind of weather conditions is brilliant.

I never tried... Is it possible? I mean, can you register your face with something on it?
Anyway I wouldn't do that because you would give less information about your face to the unlock system. IMHO it would make the unlock system less safe.
Maybe the last resort would be unlock by iris... At lest that's something we definitely needed when using a smartphone.
I will try if facelock can save my face with facemask on.... However maybe after that anyone with a facemask can unlock my phone....
