How easy is it to get the Google Play Store on the Honor 20? - Honor 20 Questions & Answers

So the device is supposedly certified by Google, but how easy is it to get the Play store on the Honor 20? Does it come preinstalled with the European version (global)? Do you have to root, do other complicated stuff (for a non tech savy person) in order to get the Google Play Store? Can you log in with your account and download the apps/games that you purchased on your other devices? I would be thankful for any and all answers from Honor 20 owners, this uncertainty is the only thing stopping me from purchasing an Honor 20.
Have a happy new year!

The global version (mine is YAL-L21) does come with GMS pre-installed out-of-the-box, all you need to do is sign in to your Google account.

It should be pre-installed on this model.

Visa certified

So they will soon release NFC payments here in Norway, but only for Visa certified phones. The list on the app's website only lists
Samsung Galaxy S3 3G
Samsung Galaxy S4 4G+
Samsung Galaxy S5
Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
Samsung Galaxy S3 4G
Samsung Galaxy S4 4G
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact
Sony Xperia Z1
Sony Xperia Z2
HTC One
HTC One (M8)
LG G3
While the actual Visa site lists hundreds. Curiously though, no Nexus 5 among the vast amount of other LG phones.
https://technologypartner.visa.com/Download.aspx?id=188
Any ideas why the Nexus 5 would be left out?
I've been in contact with Google
Google said:
Thank you for contacting Google. At this time, I can not answer as to why the Nexus 5 did not meet Visa's certification process. This certification testing is requested by the manufacturers of the mobile device. It may be that LG has not applied for certification of this device or it may have not met Visa's certification requirements.

It's up to the handset maker to submit for testing. I informed them of this, and they escalated it....

So they confirm they have no idea!
NFC payments are NFC payments. Google Wallet NFC payments are Google Wallet NFC payments. I don't think the device actually matters.
I don't know why they keep on referring me to Wallet, as I was clear that I was not from the US!
Got one more final, and useless reply from Google

That's after I told them they are supposed to send handsets to Visa for certification.
Well, LG is the manufacturer, they are shifting it to google for no good reason. It was sold to many people around the world from them, not google. I guess if it came from the play store it might make sense, maybe?
Instead of dealing with the hassle maybe try to hack it to work for you.
Still trying to find where the outside of my phone says google
I tried using Market Downloader to download the app, but it didn't work - maybe because I have to fake carrier and phone.
You can see above, that I tried to contact LG - but they were very adamant it was not up to them!
We are finally getting mobile NFC payments in our bank and one of the requirements is to have a "Visa Certified" phone. Unfortunately it seems the Google (LG) D820/D821 Nexus 5 is not on the list.
Does you know why it hasn't been submitted for certification?
I found the list of certified phones here:

12:42:51 PM [efpob] most other LG phones seem to be there
12:44:41 PM [LG Support] this is something that you would need to talk to google about
12:45:03 PM [efpob] but isn't it LG who makes the phone?
12:45:55 PM [LG Support] yes but it is google who deal with the soft ware and certificates on the phone
12:46:28 PM [efpob] I sent a message to google support
12:46:31 PM [efpob] they said

12:49:47 PM [LG Support] I have spoken with several people and they have informed me the same thing that it is an issue with google as all of the software on the phone is googles. LG simply put the hardware of the phone together
12:51:06 PM [efpob] and Google say it is the manufacturers, LG, that have the responsibility. Which means, I'm stuck in the middle, with no way of getting this resolved
12:52:05 PM [LG Support] As far as I am aware as this is something that relates to software you would need to speak to google. I have a number for them if you would like
12:52:24 PM [efpob] This is not software, this is a hardware certification process

Not blaming you, you did try to get it working. What LG are doing is denying their end and google doing the same. LG have their own site with their own factory images, as they are manufacturer of the phone. Google are acting like they have nothing to do with it.
Maybe if you tweak the build.prop to read G2 you can get it? Nope not on the list. Either way, doubt LG or Google customer support can help.
Hate to say it but this is not just a tech choice, it involves banks and politics.
What exactly are the policies they are relying on? Could be something you actually don't want. I am babbling aloud again. Good luck
It does sound more and more like it was a political choice. Google probably wanted all merchants to accept Google Wallet, which meant that being Visa certified would be detrimental to Wallet's market penetration.
Maybe similar to CVS refusing Apple Pay so they can force their own solution on users!
Answer from Valyou
Hello,
I was i contact with Valyou a while back to try to get some information.
what i got is :
Valyou begins with the phones that have the highest penetration in the market. Therefore we start with Samsung, but there will be more and more models during this year. Hopefully the Nexus be one of those, and we have already started testing.
*
During the next year, all NFC phones should be certified and ready for Valyou.
I hope that's true! I was told only Visa certified phones would be enabled for Valyou, hopefully they have changed their minds!!
Although looking at the adoption of NFC payments in Norway, there's no rush
Just need BankXccept to get into the game; all the food shops are whining about the higher fees Visa charges per transaction, so refuse to enable NFC payments.

Any way to get Google Play to update Amazon apps?

Last May, I purchased Backcountry Navigator Pro from the Amazon App Store. It hadn't seen much use until recently when I started spending a lot of time on the hiking trails.
I was interested in checking out one of their premium addons (in-app purchase) but it kept giving me errors about premium addons not being available in my market. I shot an email off to the developer, who noticed that I was on version 5.0.3 and instructed me to update to the newest (5.7.4) via google play. Problem is, Google Play - while showing that app installed on my phone - doesn't keep it up to date. My assumption is because it came from Amazon. So, I contacted the developer again and explained the situation. I was told that they had pulled that app from Amazon about 7 months back (shortly after I had purchased it). I was told to contact Amazon and request a refund so that I could re-purchase the app on Google Play.
So, I contact Amazon help desk. I explain the situation to them. They respond that there is nothing they can do, and instruct me to contact the developer.
So here I am, sitting on a $14.00 paid app that I can't actually use, a developer that is either unwilling or unable to help, a google play that won't update an app if it wasnt purchased through them, and amazon unwilling to refund me.
My question is simple... does anyone here know of another way to get this app updated without shelling out another $14 for it?
Side note - Lesson learned. Don't offer support to 3rd party app stores. It'll bite you in the ass.

Buying from a Retail store in China, what do I need to know?

Will be buying from a Chinese store when I go to China, what do I need to know first?
ie;
How would I get Google Play Store, I read somewhere HiStore (Huawei's app store has a download for it)?
How would I remove bloat?
When the international version is released would it be worthwhile "installing" the international OS version onto the phone?
What else have I missed that I should know or will need to do?
Thanks for all your help,
ItsMunday.
my fave method to remove bloat is root and titanium backup

You can get the Google Play app from HiStore, just search for google.. Most of the bloat can be uninstalled or disabled.. Hopefully the N/A or International rom can be installed to overwrite some of the system apps..
buying from retailing store in China will be marked up for RMB$400-500
will be more if you are not local and can't communicate in their language
if you have friends / anyone who can help locally in China, suggest to buy from huawei official online retail store (Vmall).
with official price and official receipts which provides you the rights on claiming 100% refund within 15 days from you received the device.
Just, you need a local address in china for delivery, and scheduled shipment is within 15 days after payment.....
All ver Mate 8 is open for sale in vmall today with 3 session
10:08, 16:00 and 20:00 (China local time GMT+8)

That's a relief on the Google Play Store.
Also with the bloat. I've heard GPS has apps for (rooted devices) removing bloat, do you have any recommendations?
Chinese not Korean but regardless when you say hopefully does this mean it may not be possible? What would lead you to believe it wont be possible?

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought Titanium Backup did just that and backed up, how does this remove bloat?
You really need someone or a friend here in China to help to get the phone and then ship it to you. I bought mine from Huawei online shopping mall the Vmall but it took two attemps before I managed to get one as it only open for sale on certain days and times and usually sold out in minutes. It will cost little bit more from retail store.

well root gives u full functionality with titanium backup and that in turn gives u low level direct access to ALL apps and processes installed on your phone. even bloatware signed as system apps that cant normally be removed can be deleted then via titanium backup u should check it out, that app has tons of features and functions aside from just backups

Got mine today
It's brillent - going from a one plus to this - it is so fast.
I had a bit of a wobble about contact sync and calender sync
At first they don't work
Then I found a thread in here saying you needed to
hard reset your phone
install the calendar sync and contact sync from the chinese market
Change the permissions giving the sync app the correct perms
Then reboot the phone again.
I have spent 3 hours installing and setting up the apps so a hard reset was not appealing
So I installed a 3rd party contact tool - which syncd the contacts but to a different db
I decided it was permissions
Played with then for a bit - nothing worked
Until I looked at the reset thread again
The line about - Then restart you phone caught my eye....
So I reset the permissions again restarted the phone and contacts sync
The only other problem Ive had is the default home location in the calendar is china (you can change it)
The uk dictionary is a little sparse too

Firstly, MASSIVE thanks for this Martyn.
I want to start off by saying this will be my first android phone so my comments may seem a bit stupid to you, but please be patient, I try my best.
Now lets go through your comment so I can help understand some more about this.
"I had a bit of a wobble about contact sync and calender sync"
What are these two things and why would I need them?
"I found a thread"
Can I get a link to it please?
"default home location in the calendar"
What is this? How did you end up changing it to your home country?
Also what other setting up of apps and everything else did you do?
Are there any threads you think I should look at?
Once again massive thanks for all your tips and help.
ItsMunday.

This will be one of the first things I do, I'll probably check it out before I even get the phone!
Thanks for the advice.
Living in China for many years now, the first thing I will tell you about buying from an online store is DON'T DO IT...unless you somehow consider it to be very reputable and/or it has excellent word of mouth from people you trust. Even then I would be cautious, although official Huawei store should be no problem. Generally speaking though, even the Chinese themselves are commonly weary about various online purchasing. (For that matter, they're often worried about buying common household items online from the biggest e-retailers here for fear that they may be fake.) I read a report a few months back that some ridiculous percentage (i.e., vast vast majority) of mobile phones sold online in China are counterfeit using counterfeit components. So I would tend to agree that the best method is to have a friend in China buy it for you through an official channel or highly trusted brick and mortar store (i.e., a place they can go to for recourse) and just have them ship it to you (although I just re-read and realized that you said you were planning to come to China, so that would solve the need to re-ship). Note, that in typical Chinese fashion, if you buy from an actual store (still, one you trust), you should be able to negotiate. I did. And even if they don't want to give much up on price then you can ask them what gifts they will include. For me, they offered to throw in some gifts, which added up, probably retailed for about RMB200-300. Since I didn't want the gifts though, I told them that and asked again to just take some money off, so they ultimately agreed. When all was said and done, I was rather happy with the price I got (given it was from such a well-known reputable place) and think it was even significantly less than the price I saw on some of the big name e-retailers here (e.g., Amazon China, JD.com, etc.). So remember (and your contact probably knows this if he/she lives here or is a local), shops here expect to negotiate, or at least be asked. If they offer gifts, try telling them to just keep the gifts and reduce they price, but even if they ultimately refuse, oftentimes the gifts are okay too. Even if they will only give gifts, you may be able to negotiate about which gifts too.
I just bought one a few days ago (xmas gift for a family member here, although will probably pick one up for myself) from a very reputable long-time international store and walked through with them exactly what they would be doing with the phone upon purchase (they said they were required by their company and Huawei for warranty purposes to open the package and perform a review with me and some initial set-up and information taking). Even after they broke open the package with me, made sure it worked, showed me the on-phone system stats and components (i.e., "About the phone") and the warranty info--taking the phone's details to activate warranty from their end--I probably even again asked if the phone was real. By then I was already confident it was (and it was already bought and paid for anyway), but you just get so used to the belt-and-suspenders approach to things here that I couldn't help myself. Not to stereotype an entire country, but it's a land filled with scammers, liars and cheaters, so you absolutely must do what you can to protect yourself, and even then, something might still happen that wasn't anticipated. Anyway, not to get too deep into any cultural statements here and to bring it back to the original question, just err on the side of caution.
About the rooting and Titanium, I would agree with this (Titanium Pro has much more functionality than just backing up, although it does an excellent job of that too), except that there's recently been some questions about rooting the Mate 8, which I've been digging deeper into as well (I consider rooting to be essential, but this is a completely personal opinion). As it turns out, Huawei locks the bootloader of its phones, and you must actually contact Huawei either via email or by going onto their Huawei Club website and setting up a free account, then under the Downloads tab, apply for a bootloader unlock key with your phone's specific information. I'm just going through this process myself now, which I've been discussing with some others on one of the other Mate 8 forums (the "FAQs" forum). Once this bootloader unlock key is provided, then presumably it should be possible to root (e.g., through standard rooting methods), but I have yet to see anyone say they've actually gone through this process successfully with the Mate 8 yet (but am eagerly awaiting it, and seems to be a proven process with prior models). Of course, if there is some other proven/confirmed way to root the Mate 8, I and I'm sure many others would love to hear about it.
Good luck! :good:

Thanks for taking the time to write this for me.
I didn't realise about being able to negotiate with the stores but I will see what they can do for me. Hope they can do something good, fingers crossed.
I am probably going to get the phone through the official huawei online store or retail store, which ever is easiest at the time, so fingers crossed I don't fall into the trap of getting a fake, ill do my best to make sure its real. Which is often hard I know, these damn scammers are getting bloody good.
I was under the impression all huawei phones needed that key to be requested and such, do you know what email you send it to and what kind of thing you would include in the message, also does english work or must it be in Chinese. I am hoping for root as I know it will be great to remove bloat and even flash the international ROM when that is released.
Please report back with how your rooting process goes!
Thanks again,
ItsMunday.

I personally haven't seen a physical Huawei store location here, but maybe I just haven't been looking. If there is one though I wouldn't expect to be able to negotiate there...more so at third party retailers (again though, choose a reputable one if going down that route). I don't think it's necessary to MUST buy directly from Huawei if you're actually coming to China yourself and can shop around to get a feel for things, but ultimately if you are most comfortable going direct through Huawei, I won't fault you for that. I did notice that Huawei doesn't even show the Mate 8 on its online store right now...strange, but probably due to availability I imagine.
See link I included for requesting bootloader unlock key on the other thread where you posted about asking how to get a Huawei account.

If you can unlock the bootloader, or install .zips from recovery, you can use opengapps. Otherwise, I'm not yet aware of a side-load method.
You should be able to install the Play Store using the APK file that you can download from apkmirror. From there you can then install other Google apps. Depending on the set-up, you may also need the APK files for Google Play Services, Google Services Framework, calendar sync etc.
There are lots of guides online. Eg https://forum.xda-developers.com/find-X/help/install-playstore-t3823897/amp/
Have you received your gundam edition yet? I have been told it won't ship until after Nov 12th.

Yes. I am waiting too. The supplier Ross said he will ship to me at 12th or 13th. And I also buy a Gundam Gaming Pad and a Wireless headset from him. Can't wait to get them.

Thank you. But it seems it is too difficult for you. I will try to find an easy way, but still thank you for your help!
just download a play store apk and install it, other parts of GMS have already been pre-installed.

and OPPO is quite conservative on bootloader unlocking issues, according to the previous reno series phones, it would take 3 months (since that phone release) before OPPO announce the method of locking bootloader.
Reno Ace comes with Google service installed, just go to apkmirror download Google play apk and you're good. I've been using this phone since launch date on At&t with no issues. Btw, $620 seems to be a lot, I ordered on JD.com on presale with 200yuan discount, so total price for a 8/256 purple one is 3099yuan plus shipping that rounds to about $450 USD.

Question question about pixel 7 pro

Hello everyone, excellent day everyone first of all.
I stop by here to ask your opinions about the Google Pixel 7 Pro, I come from a huawei p50 pro without google services (which many apps did not work or had to use emulators) and a software where (they pay more attention to those from china than in the global version)
I would like to ask your opinions about the pixel 7 pro, bug, how is the battery issue going, how long does it take to charge the battery, performance and camera, how is the guarantee verified and if it is purchased on amazon how is it managed, I would like honest opinions since it is a model that I would like to try

Do you mean the manufacturer warranty? It's 1 year from the date purchased new and is tracked by the device serial number. The terms in your region may be different as local and national laws apply.

How is what managed? If you're talking about the warranty, I would assume that it works the same way; a new device would have the 1 year warranty. I would advise buying direct from Google if you have the option, though.

I do not own a Pixel 7. I own a Pixel 5, and I'm just offering general perspective that isn't specific to the device
