Fingerprint sensor - discussion - Sony Xperia 5 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello,
I’m using the Xperia 5 since this Wednesday (for two days).
My overall experience with phone is mostly good (for most parts of using even perfect). Unfortunately, these nice words do not apply for the fingerprint sensor.
It usually takes 2-5 tries to unlock the phone, sometimes I can’t even open the phone with the fingerprint scanner at all. (The error messages are: Not recognized; could not process fingerprint, please try again. Sometimes it says something with "partial fingerprint").
I tried rebooting recalibrating the fingerprint with the wizard then rebooting again. Nothing seems to help. I know this doesn’t have to be eventually a defect or something. Fyi, my thumb is not moist or oily, same thing applies for the reader. Maybe my thumb is just too wide, I don’t know.
What’s your overall experience?
Jakub

Same experience. Worst fingerprint reader I've used.

Same here, IMHO the worst fingerprint sensor I've ever used on a device.

I got it working but putting my finger along the side of it and not by using the thumb having the finger pointing out from the phone.
Mine works almost every time now.
But it is indeed not the best scanner.

So, you didn't use Z5 series. That was the worst fingerprint sensor. Fingerprint sensor didn't work more than it worked. This one on 5 is better but not good. Sometimes it doesn't work at all.

I have the same issue as well, as do many others evident from Sony Forums however the FPS works fine Banking apps, website logins etc

I didn't use a Sony phone with fingerprint sensor before
I am kinda used to finger print sensor being 99,99% accurate and reliable (iPad, Meizu, Nokia, LG, Samsung, Asus, Xiaomi etc.) so that's why I am surprised it can implemented so poorly. :silly:

Honestly after 2 weeks with this phone, I'm beginning to question whether it has a fingerprint scanner at all. Feel like I may as well just remove my fingerprints and forget it exists.

I sold mine last week, of same reasons. Useless fp, might as well be non existent.

I had to retrain myself with how to use the finger print scanner. With other phones, I'm used to using the tip of my finger, but that doesn't work with this scanner. As HellRoot describes above, I now lay the flat part of my finger against the scanner so that my finger is parallel to the phone (not pointing at an angle). Now I can get it to work very reliably.

Sadly not working for me at all.
Not to mention I encountered "flip case" bug when the phone is refusing to accept touch screen input to take a call.
This "Sony experience" is much more frustrating than I ever expected and that comes from a guy that used LG V30 for 2 years.
If they do not fix software issues with Android 10 update, I will seriously give it to my mom or wife and buy a propper phone.

My FP sensor worked perfectly for two weeks, I did not get a single "Partial FP detected" and was wondering what's with the bad press.
Then, gradually over the course of a day, it's started playing up. Now I'm in line with everyone else, frustrating experience at less than 20% hit rate. Android 9 or 10 doesn't seem to make a difference, tried factory resetting etc.
Checking the Service Menu (*#*#7378423#*#* from the Dialler --> Service Tests --> Fingerprint Test) returns the following:
Fingerprint Sensor Status:
Sensor not OK
Sensor HWID:
0x0603
I can't seem to find more information on this error code, contacting Sony has returned the typical "Are you running the latest software?" and "Have you tried restarting your device?"

I just got mine yesterday, pretty much everything work perfectly except for the fingerprint, and mine also show the same Service Tests info as yours.
When I scan my finger, it usually register only at certain angle, and usually only at my 2nd press on the scanner, which is quite frustrating
I really wonder if this is a software bug or hardware problem so I can have the store replace a new one.

But seriously they do not mind to use not so reliable devices. Xperia 5 is still an upgrade for Xiaomi Note 4 or Asus M1 Pro user.

It appears to be Software. I have issues only with unlocking the screen. The Banking apps seem to work fine (for now)

That's good to hear. I suspect so too because the service tests show everything was fine when I first bought the phone (it was running Pie at the time) and I started upgrading to Q soon afterward. And it was the 2nd day after I upgraded to Q that I notice the service test "Not OK" info.
Hope it can be fixed in the near future update and off topic: hope that update will also include patch for third party launcher to work with Q's Gesture (my most annoyed thing about Q)
Edit: After a few days using it, I realize it recognize the finger really well at certain angles. It never scans well with full finger but almost never miss when I use my finger tip or side. So I guess I can live with it for now. But still hope for improvement soon.

Well, other Xperias like XZ2, XZ3, XZP just got updated to 10 recently. And, all I've seen so far are complaints about 2 things: no swipe gesture (because the stock launcher hasn't been updated, which is rather stupid) and fingerprint on those devices all become less responsive. It took many times pressing to work, which sounds just like our problem.
So I guess this is a software based problem from Sony's side. Maybe some bad fingerprint driver I guess. Anyway, hope Sony is aware of this and get it fix soon with December security update (also hope for third party launcher patch too)

Has anybody else had issues with "Dirty fingerprint scanner"?

I've had the phone since Friday of last week (04/01/16) And everything works great, except my fingerprint scanner just started having issues reading my fingerprint starting today. I have removed my print that was saved and redone it 3 times but most of the time I get an error that says "Fingerprint scanner dirty, clean it and try again". I've cleaned it and nothing has changed.
Not helpful, but mine has worked pretty flawless. My only other phone I've had with fingerprint was my note 5 and I considered it unacceptable and had to wipe multiple times a day. So far I haven't consciously wiped my g5's.

You're right, it wasn't helpful however I have noticed that after that one day (and driving it to the purchase location to be made a fool of) I have had no issues with it again. Must have been a fluke for almost 8 hours but it has been flawless ever since.
Fingerprint scanner issue
//
No Problems
My scanner works very well and fast. The only time it hasn't is if my finger is dirty or wet. If you have something on your finger that wasn't there when you scanned it will cause a problem.

Hey Ashley, I got the issue I think all sorted out, I went through and did a variety of scans of my fingerprint and it eventually solved itself I haven't had any other issues since.
No issues at all with mine and I haven't cleaned since I started using it (2 weeks).
Only problem I have with mine is when I use nova launcher... After a few days it just wouldn't work so just loaded lg's 4.0 which I have actually started to like and have zero issue even worked with a little moisture after condensation from a cold beverage.
Hi
so i bought the LG G5 as an anniversary gift for my better half and we ( i also use it from time to time)have an outgoing issues...from time to time the scanner won't work at all... the only way to make it work is to go to setting turn it off and on again... I'm with Bell and I'm still in the DOA period... so i can exchange it. she uses Holo launcher cause let's face it LG not putting apps drawer (except on the simplistic easy mode) is a joke ...so could that be it???

hi
exactly what i did and since then no issues
my wife doesn't like the UX 4.0 though, it will take some getting used to it
I've been using nova launcher since day one and have never had any problems with the scanner. I have had it tell me my finger was too dirty a few times when I was working on my truck though. Perhaps you should try deleting all your fingerprints and then setting up the same finger twice using different parts of your finger for each fingerprint (as suggested in a similar thread). I did this independently when I switched from my otter box to the lifeproof case for fear of having the same issue as you due to the change in angle my finger commonly touches the button at as well as the clear protective sheet over the scanner from the lifeproof case. I scarcely if at all have problems with it.
:crying: I've never had it workin', have written it off as another useless feature, not real fond of lock screens anyway!! I use Apex launcher, no issues!!

Fingerprint swipe on sensor flaky

Just got my Pixel 3 the other day and have started to put it to regular use, I'm coming from a Pixel OG that only missed swipes if my finger was damp or such. At first I thought it was due to my case but even without it on the swipe gesture on the fingerprint sensor is more miss than hit. I'm not talking about unlocking which happens every time, but trying to pull down notifications or quick settings with a swipe on the fingerprint sensor (yes it's enabled).
Anyone else with this issue or do I possibly have a finicky sensor?
Thanks
I've had some issues with mine but not a ton, yet. It works fine for unlocking as you said but sometimes swiping down doesn't do anything and I have to swipe a few times or just pull the shade with the screen. I believe I saw a post here or on reddit about it a few weeks ago. Not sure if it's something that can be addressed via software fixes or not.
That's not encouraging to hear, that's a feature I use all the time. And on my pixel OG it worked flawlessly so this is definitely not usual performance.

It's not "usual" and likely not working as intended but it's not a problem specific to your device. Assuming it's something they can adjust with software it should be fixed in an update vs an RMA for your specific phone. That's kind of what I was getting at with my reply.
Yes I understood it as it being a problem on more than mine but made me think it could be a hardware issue. Hopefully that's something that can be addressed with software.

only time i had the issue was with a case on. other than that.. its been perfect
I've noticed similar behavior on mine. If I slow my finger down a bit it's typically 100%. But if my finger moves too fast, it doesn't always work.
works 1 out of 3 times for me. I'm using a skin, no case. Anyways, i would only use the feature in "one-hand-mode", and it's a big stretch for my finger the way that i carry the phone...

Xperia 1 Fingerprint status test

Open the dialer app, and type *#*#7378423#*#* to open the Service Menu, from there go to Service Tests and scroll down until you find Fingerprint test.
Please post the results here with your device model number (J8110, J9110, J8170), device build number (55.x.x.x.x), age of your device and whether or not you have issues with the fingerprint scanner.
Trying to figure out a pattern and it seems like XDA is more active (in comparison) than other forums for Sony devices.
Thanks.
J9110 flashed with J8170.
On 55.0.A.10.26 (pie), used to say "PASS"
On latest 55.1.A.0.748, now says fail. but fingerprint sensor works fine.
I'm guessing it's just a software issue.

Yeah I wish I had more time to test on Pie but I upgraded to 10 almost immediately and the fingerprint has been hit or miss from the start, but for the past day it's been quite bad.
Now it won't unlock unless I completely wipe down the sensor and make sure it's 100% clean, after which it unlocks just fine, but after that it won't unlock till I clean it again.
Quite frustrating, but judging from what I've read, it seems like Sony messed up big time with the Android 10 update for the X1, so I can imagine me and many others are eagerly waiting for a new update.
By the way, do you have any issues on a 'converted' device? Anything not working as intended? And do OTA updates work or do you have to flash every new build manually?

It works 90% of the time for me. Especially after I "trained" the fingerprint sensor. Basically open up the fingerprint settings, then constantly tap your finger, moving your finger slightly with each tap to cover your whole thumb.
IMO the update is fine! Well at least for me. I did a software reset after updating.
OTA updates fine Haven't tested out the dual sim, but I'm assuming it won't work. The only time I had to flash a new build was when I updated from Pie to 10, because I usually do a full wipe during a major update.
I'm using J9110 with latest stock EU firmware. The sensor does not work at all. Even weirder, there is no option to test the sensor in service menu and I cannot find fingerprint scanner in device options. Out of the box the sensor worked great, but gradually started failing after 1 year of use.
Update: I took some screenshots and compared them to other Sony device with working FPS - there is clearly something fishy going on.
The third screenshot is what happens when I launch Fingerprint Manager with Activity Launcher app and try to register a new fingerprint.
@kot5nik exact same issue, mine is entirely missing. Worked at first, gradually started breaking and was intermittent in functionality, then just gone.

You update to 11? Otherwise I think you backup and flash with 12.28 to get it back.
problem is same, fingerprint menu is gone.
J9110

anyone solved this problem? please share ..
Since new firmware 55.2.A.4.47, fingerprint works for 1hour, then just start detecting ton of wrong prints even without finger on the sensor, and shut down completely until the phone is restarted. FingerprintTest showing "NOT OK" at this time. FingerprintTest showing OK after a restart.
I'm so sad I'm not able to get Flashtool working to go back to previous firmware. The fingerprint was working really great for the last 10 months (first months were really hit or miss tho).
if u are on Android 11 now u can't downgrade to Android 10 anymore...u can but it's not working well anymore.!
i tried many times going back to Android 9 after updated to Android 10.
after flashing older Android 9 fw Gyroscope sensor isn't working anymore on lower version of Android
I succeed to revert back to Android 10, but it didn't solve the issue with the fingerprint. If you got some issue with another sensor, I will guess that the "drivers" for the sensor can be changed by an update but are not rolled back correctly, thus the creating issue or not solving mine since the faulty "driver" for the FP reader stay the same.
After a day of not even having the fingerprint management in the security options, Support asked me to do a forced reboot (volume up + power) to see if it solves momentarily the reader, there is a well known issue and they are working on a fix. It did solve the issue momentarily so I guess my FP reader is not completely dead (it was my conclusion seing it was still an issue once reverted to Android10) and I just have to wait for a fix.

Sorry for really late answer. Yes I updated to 11 right after it came out.
To prove the theory of update bricking it I bought a replacement sensor from AliExpress (when it arrived, it was clearly a new one, in OEM packaging) and it didn't work either.
In the process of replacement I accidentally broke the screen (because was really hard to replace, at least with my experience, way harder than battery, motherboard, etc.). So I really don't recommend trying this to anyone.
Now there is no point to downgrading, heh.
And no, on 11 firmware shutting the phone down completely or force reboot does not help. I tried everything I could before going for replacement, including full data wipe and disconnecting the battery with inside connector for some time.
Been having the same issue but I can get the fingerprint sensor to work sometimes after booting into safe mode and then booting normally, read that from another post somewhere but can't seem to find it. Mine also keeps disconnecting from LTE and drops to H+ and has been doing that a lot recently I hope that they will update some of this soon getting pretty frustrated with it, any of you been seeing that in addition to the fingerprint issue?
My fingeprint sensor on XPERIA 1 is there in menu but it is not working at all. Can't recognize my finger at all. Resset didn't help as well as restart to safe mode. I gess it is dead. Or is there something else wrong?
The fingerprint on my Xperia 1 is notice with "Could not read fingerprint", because "Fingerprint enrollment time limit reached" (like image attached)

So, the warranty on mine was over and they asked me 335 euro for "REPLACEMENT FRONT COVER WITH FINGERPRINT READER" (also change the internal fingerprint reader module)
According to them so it is a hardware problem, but at that price certainly not worth it to repair it.

Appalling Fingerprint reader

My fingerprint reader keeps disabling. I have to turn phone off and back on (reboot is not enough). However then all the apos detect a Biometrics change and I have to reenable fingerprint login for each app.
Even when it works the reader is super sensitive and keeps telling me I've had too many attempts before i pick up the phone.
While I do get the too many attempts thing I haven't had the fingerprint reader disable on my phone
For me its working just perfectly.
It works perfectly for me as well. I have found that using a case helps a lot with false reading attempts.
I also use a slim case and I'm having a very positive experience with the fingerprint reader.
Coming from a Pixel 2 XL with a reader at the back, it took me a few days to get used to thumb based unlock.
But now, I find it much more reliable than the Pixel 2 XL reader, where fingers moisture was a real pain.
Same hands (different finger being used on the 5ii and it works almost 100% of the time (and quick too).
Stock ROM and launcher.

Damn it doesn't appear that that case is available in Canada or even the US. Oh well hopefully more cases turn up when the device releases in the US
Try adding the same finger a few times. I haven't had any problems since I did that.
Do you also have this issue, that while calling, you accidentally click on the fingerprint sensor and so activate the screen while it is 'at your ear' and so you 'click' on several options and so on? It happens a lot, I have accidentally adjusted with my ear the brightness or paused the call etc. Very annoying!
I struggled a bit at first to have my fingerprint recognized when trying to unlock, often ending up typing my pin instead.
I noticed a huge improvement by sliding my thumb upwards on the sensor, instead of just pressing it still. Now works almost all the times.
November update might have improved the situation as well.
Not sure if it's something to do with a recent update but my reader is not recognising my fingerprints very well at all now. Anyone seen problems?
The other potential issue is that I've been doing a lot of DIY lately and probably worn away some of the detail on my finger ends .

Mine still on 58.0.A.22.21 as it's US variant but recently I am also facing issues with fingerprint scanner if the phone is in (deep?) sleep mode. Earlier it used to be just touch and go but now had to press it or try multiple time to unlock it.
Not sure what's the issue here?
No problems with my FPR. Occasionally it requires a couple of tries but that's true of every single phone on the market.
Mine seems to be working well. I am coming from a P30 Pro with the underscreen sensor, and I had a few Xperias before that. This is by far the fastest Android fingerprint sensor I've used. it seems to instantly recognize everything. It's probably on par with my pre-face ID iPhones, but i don't have one of those anymore to compare it.
I ended up disabling the fingerprint reader completely. Never works from first try when I need it, but somehow easily unlocks when I actually don't need it, as in when just holding it, putting down or in pocket. Also all those buttons on the same side is a really poor design choice, specially power right under volume. Btw, is there a way to disable the assistant button?

Everything I have read, says there's no way to disable it. I'm very surprised I have yet to activate accidentally. But, that might be because the button covers on my case are kind of stiff.

Never works from first try when I need it, but somehow easily unlocks when I actually don't need it, as in when just holding it, putting down or in pocket.

I get the exact same behavior. Very frustrating. Totally disappointed with the fingerprint scanner.

Btw, is there a way to disable the assistant button?

You can disable the assistant app. But if course this is only a solution if you don't use the Google assistant at all.
My favorite fingerprint reader was the Pixel 3 with the reader on the back of the phone. My least favorite has been the under-screen readers on my Huaweis. The reason is less accuracy and fingerprints.
I've had my Xperia 5 ii for a day, and have been on it a lot, and the fingerprint reader has been excellent. My problem is finding it and not dropping the phone while I look.

General Most Idiots way to make use of P6a slow FP

Well, I'm on A13 Beta 4.1
I have noticed FP is not consistent at all..
For some, it's unlocking after many tries or can't even register FP..
At first i thought it was an issue in A12 where FP is registering Thumb expression but unable to unlock fast enough (No. I haven't noticed but where my P6a can be unlocked with unregistered Finger)
After moving to A13 Beta 4.1 it got worst..
Just now I have noticed that FP is working completely fine when your Finger is little wet.. Yes, you read it right..
At first even I was confused but then after some searching and applying logic, i gotta know that If your registered finger is Dry, I won't be able to read it properly so Titan M2 chip just refuse to accept it..
But Once you made your finger little wet(Little saliva or less than drop of water which is enough to make your finger wet enough), It just unlock it in 1st try..
I tried it for around 2 days.. So yes, If you are having trouble unlocking your P6a, Just make your registered finger little wet & unlock it..
Before we start complaining about M2 Chip, we need to acknowledge that all phones which don't comes with security like M2 chip just unlock device instantly because they don't have additional security like M2 chip...
Sorry for bad Englis...
yeah I'm noticing the same thing... and you're right that the moisture (or oil) level in my finger matters. Sometimes I can unlock my phone easily and sometimes it just can't read my fingerprint at all. When that happens, I try to re-register and I would repeatedly get "can't read your fingerprint" errors. Even tried removing my screen protector, but same issue.
Started noticing it when I took a trip to a dry/hot city. Started noticing repeated fingerprint errors.
In fairness though, any amount of moisture on my finger resulted in my 3a XL not recognizing it.
I do definitely prefer the physical sensor though vs the under screen solution.
Odd thing is that I'm back home now where it's not as humid or hot or dry and suddenly having numerous issues with my fingerprint. I'm on Android 13 beta 4 and fingerprint was fine for 4 days or so. Tried re-registering FP today and I kept on having sensor registration issues as well as FP reading errors - repeatedly.
In fact, I didn't have much issues with the FP since I got the 6a a week ago (when I was on Android 12 and then switched to Android 13 beta 4), so not sure what changed. Going to switch back to Android 12 and see if that makes a difference.
FP is also hit or miss for me. I'm on Android 12 and actually I couldn't register my fingerprint few times when I bought the phone. In the end, after some reboots and setting all the apps up I managed to register my fingerprints but now sometimes they are scanned without issues and pretty fast, but also sometimes I get info that fingerprint is not recognized and I have to put my pin.
Im guessing most of these issues will be fixed with software updates. It seems this device may have been a bit rushed to market. This is typical new device stuff though.
