Warranty repair, check moisture sensors befoer shipping it back? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro Questions & Answers

Edit: forgot to mention what the issue is: the speaker does (most times) not work when being called/calling out. But not realy relevant for the question at hand imho.
The phone is still under manufacturers warranty but I forgot to claim warranty before the credit-card insurance ran out
So now I want to make sure the warranty is honoured and due to many horrorstories with repair companies, make sure I have all my bases covered.
Where are the moisture sensor(s) in a Note 6 pro? Can I open the housing without damaging anything? (Link to random note-6 youtube video) Is this enough or are the sensors burried deeper in the phone? Am I allowed to open it up or is this in itself reason for not honouring the warranty?
Or should I just trust the repaircompany to do its work properly and am I seeing ghosts?
The phone has never been wet, it might have been looked at while there was a drizzle, but that's it.
When cycling through the rain it was stored inside a bag, not just a jacket-pocket (how an earlier Samsung died). So I have no reason whatsoever to suspect moisture damage, but I have first hand experience where a repair company refused warranty where I later found out this was bull (HTC HD2 with broken home-button, very common problem).
If I were to ask for proof, they can just keep the phone over a watercooker and voila, moisture damage....

[Q] Transformer water damage, suggestions please.

Okay so I spilled some juice on this badboy and well it sat in the juice until I got home and realized. I immediately threw it in some rice (3 days) and thankfully it did dry out. The unit was working fine and fully functional except for obvious signs of water damage when the screen is own like splotches under the screen. And there is a clearly visible one (even when screen off) in the lower right corner. Some days later it stopped powering on all together. Here is where you all come in. Has anyone had to have their unit repaired third party? If so please suggest a third party fix. I am within my 30 days of purchase so do you think Best Buy or ASUS will repair/replace the unit? No, I don't have the extended warranty from Best Buy but I could still purchase it. Should I do that and file a claim in a couple months? How about purchasing a third party extended warranty then filing a claim in a couple months? Help me, help me PLEASE!
You can probably get it repaired, but I'm sure it will cost you unless you already have water damage protection. Accidents happen. If BB will let you get a policy now, go for it. But just know that you're basically committing fraud, as you'd have to lie about the date of damage.
seems like you already know what you want to do...you just need people to share the moral burden
getting it fixed by asus is prabobly going to require screen replacement, which is i think 50% of the cost of the device. at least this way, you can sleep at night.
or, just get a HP touchpad and hope the android port is a success.
on a completely absolutely unrelated note...i just want to brag about this, my TF keyboard's response is aboslutely on point right now...no lag, nothing.

Check to see if it's covered by your home contents insurance, some sort of accidental damage clause.

If you can still buy the warranty from Best Buy then buy that, then wait a bit and bring it in. Understand you will likely be without the unit for a long while as they attempt to get it repaired. Bringing it back to Best Buy in this state however would be wrong because you damaged it. The Best Buy plan allows you to damage your device and they will repair it, so while it may be morally questionable to buy the warranty after you do the damage, I would say it is less so than the other options. Understand that Best Buy has the right to refuse to sell you the warranty after the fact if you don't bring the device in first, so it is possible you won't even be able to buy it.

I agree, at least you already have that insurance. Or possibly renter's insurance if you're in that situation.
With home insurance the deducible may be higher than the cost of the device. Unless the device is scheduled, or you have a 'computer' clause that considers it scheduled even though it isn't. If this was a $2000 device then sure it would make sense, but for a $400 device it is unlikely home owners is going to help a lot.
The only reason I would advocate buying the warranty then using it through Best Buy is that if they are willing to sell it to you sight unseen it almost serves them right to get stuck with a repair like this. Have you bought a cell phone from them, they essentially advocate running over you phone when you want to replace it to use the black tie service. They are essentially selling abuse insurance with the understanding that most people won't do it. Which is why the extended warranty through them is so expensive. Most companies make a TON of money on extended warranties, very few of these warranties ever get used.
One thing I would not advocate is any deception on the part of purchasing the plan. If you have to sign anything saying it is in good working order, or you have to tell them it is in good working order then you should stop right there and walk out.

HTC Repair Quote?

So I sent my phone in to HTC to get repaired, got an email today saying it'd cost me either $185 to get it repaired and sent back, or $35 to get it sent back, not fixed or anything. Here's what the repair tracking said:
Code:
Repair Description
We have diagnosed your device and have determined that due to the following reason(s), your device is out of warranty:
• Case Damage not covered by warranty
In order to properly repair your device, the following action(s) will need to be taken which will require payment due to the out of warranty diagnosis:
• Replace Device Main Board
When I called to get my phone repaired, the guy said it was under warranty until the 28th of January (3 days ago), but since I called before that, it'll be under warranty even if it gets there after.
The amount of case "damage" was incredibly small, and I don't really need it to be replaced, and replacing the device main board sounds more of a manufacturers defect, not something I did, considering I never opened the phone up, and it would turn on (though I could be wrong).
From what I'm reading, I'm being charged because of the case damage, and if that wasn't there, I wouldn't be charged. So does anyone know if I can have them JUST replace the main board so I don't get charged?
I'd rather not pay $185 to get this repaired, and I don't want to pay $35 to have them tell me something was wrong with it, since I already knew that.
If I do decide to pay $185 to get it repaired, would replacing the main board also replace the eMMC chip?
Thanks

Warranty conditions illegal in germany

Hi,
I've got the 1+1 for 6 month now and it's starting to have issues, so I contacted Oneplus for warranty.
Since I live in Germany, german law applies here.
The normal procedure is the following:
If the consumer runs into issues with a product in the first 12 months, he can send the device to the manufacturer.
The manufacturer then has to determine the cause of the issue and solve the issue, except it can be proven that the consumer caused the issue by improper handling.
But Oneplus refuses to take back any device that has even the smallest scratches or dents.....
They write in their T&C's, that warranty voids if the device is ever dropped, exposed to water, or anything....
This is unlawful in Germany.
My story:
I had issues, contacted the support, but wasn't able to send in the device. I only had one Phone and Oneplus doesn't send you a replacement before, like Google does...
Later on, as the issues got worse, I contacted Oneplus again, this time ready to send in the device.
But the refused, because I dropped the phone in the meantime and it got a dent ...
Immediately after I told them that I dropped the Phone, they said I don't have warranty anymore (which is definitely not conform with the law) and that the repair would cost over 200€ ....
They don't even know where the issue comes from, they didn't took a single look at the device itself, but tell my how much the repair costs?! .... do they have a crystal ball telling them ?!
I find this very disappointing.
It seems to be within the law:
"except it can be proven that the consumer caused the issue by improper handling"
A drop causes physical damage, physical damage is known to cause problems with the operation of a phone. This might not be the case in your situation, but this is pretty standard policy. Anyway, there isn't really much anyone here can do about that. What are the problems you're having with the phone, we might be able to solve them.

Z3 water damage repair

So, my z3 took a swim in a lake. Wasn't deep at all and only for a few minutes.
Result, water damage, phone completely dead.
Sony have checked the phone and have confirmed the water damage. They will repair the phone, but because water damage isn't covered by warranty, they will charge around USD350 to repair.
Argh, what to do? Only had the phone for about 6 months.
Z5 does look tempting, but so expensive (at the moment) and also no rootability.

Ask to escalate to a manager, don't take no for an answer. They replaced mine and I understand that they acknowledge these problems.
Insist on it, water damage from assembly defect is covered under warranty assuming you didn't misuse your phone. Not sure if it's different in the USA but I talked with a Sony service manager and he confirmed that they can test the device for defects and if an assembly defect is found they'll repair it under warranty.
Thanks guys. Unfortunately in this case it seems they are not backing down (dealing with Sony in Hong Kong, if that makes a difference). They are saying the LCD panel and the mainboard are water damaged. I spoke to them yesterday and they said they are not going to be able to fix it, but instead will offer me a refurbished phone for the previously quoted price of c. USD350.
They did note that the back cover of the phone was slightly lifted, so it is a good chance the water went in through there. In all fairness this was probably my fault (FYI this was pointed out to me when I took the phone in for repair) as I have dropped the phone a few times. As much as I want to claim, I don't think this was a faulty phone situation.
i submerged mine in a pool and rivers several times, last time i did it the screen went black only led working camera glass was foggy what i did was i openned de flaps i left inside my car 1 hour, i too it out after that hour. the camera glass was still foggy then with my mouth started to suck air from the sim card/micro sd slot i did it until the fogg disapered waited a few minutes the camera went foggy on more time i repeated the process of sucking air waited a few minutes the fogg disapered and i turned it on, it was working again without flaws except the camera but one hour later the camera went back again
dont know what happened if it was luck or what but thats what i did
Just an update.
Sony wouldn't back down on the cost, however I was able to make a claim with my travel insurance company. They have agreed to cover the replacement cost. Only wrinkle now is that Sony don't have stock of a z3 and have to put an order in, will take a few weeks to receive.
When you get new LCD screen (if old is broken), the phone isn't anymore watteproof

Attempt to defraud the customers by Google?

Pixel community discussion thread: goo.gl/Mmywzn
Hey Everyone! Long post but if you’re a Pixel/Pixel 2 user (especially in India), you’ve to read this.
Off late, my Pixel 2 developed a weird technical snag with the charging port (ID: GL0007613). USB type C is supposed to be reversible but when I actually connect it in the reverse direction, it doesn’t charge and data transfer won’t work. I thought it was a minor issue and contacted Google support for help. They sent a technician home who was unable to figure out the issue and took it along with him to the local service center, they in turn shipped it to B2X Service Solutions India Pvt Ltd. Mumbai office for further inspection. After 4 days, I contacted Google support again to know the status and they said the issue is fixed and the phone is kept under observation. At this point, I was positive the phone will be returned in couple of days. I was surprised when I got an invoice on the same day which read there was a liquid damage inside the phone and I have to pay the amount to get it fixed.
When I asked them to show the proof of the liquid damage, they literally sent a picture they took in my home. They said the charging port turned green because of liquid damage. I inspected the image with Image processor and couldn't find a single green pixel. When I questioned them further, they said “We are instructed to do this, pay the money in 7 days or we’ll send the defective phone back to you”. I don’t know if it’s B2X or Google’s idea to defraud the customers by claiming a random defect which is not covered under warranty and squeeze money from the customers. As I didn't agree to pay the amount without any proof, they're sending my phone back to me.
I want to proceed legally but they're not even telling me whom should I address the legal notice to. If you’re like me who thought you'd get Premium service for spending your hard earned money on a phone which is "Made by Google", you may be wrong. Use your phones with utmost care and pray your phone doesn't develop any technical snag to avoid a horror story like mine. Thanks!

Liquid damage? In a waterproof phone? That sounds stinky for me! You shouldn't let this go!

It's water-resistant, not water proof though.
I won't claim to say that I see water damage there. I also don't know policy on sending the customer pictures of the damage. I do know that these devices are water resistant and not waterproof. Any water damage in the phone will void the warranty as water resistance does not guarantee that water won't get inside the device. They have no way of knowing if you exposed the device to conditions beyond those in which the tested rating was given. My guess is that you get the phone back and have it looked at by a third party. If it indeed shows no water damage, you may have a case.
Yes, I'm sending them a legal notice.

Thanks! They're sending me the picture of the phone because they shouldn't open the phone for inspection here in India. They don't repair, they just replace. My point is, just by looking at the port, they're deciding that it's liquid damage. I believe the evaluation is not properly and I'm being a scapegoat of their sloppy investigation.
