Power button loose? - ASUS ZenFone 6 (2019) Questions & Answers

Hello, I just got my Zenfone 6 today, and I am noticing that the power button is very loose. Pressing on the bottom half of it will make it "tilt" inwards, but won't activate it, while pressing on the top half actually will activate the button. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

It's not normal. I've just double-checked without case and mine works as it's supposed to. No loosy feedback. If your problem's this severe, I'd recommend returning/replacing it.

Yeah, I submitted a request for rma today. Kind of sucks that they make you buy return shipping through Asus in order to do so. Feels like I'm being taxed $15 for their mistake.

How firm is your slide mechanism?

As per the title.
How firm are your slide mechanism? When holding the device in your right hand (fingertips along left edge of device), does the device give a little as you change your grip/pressure (for example, as if you're manipulating the volume keys?).
EDIT:
As an aside, those buttons would have been better off on the "base" (keyboard section edge) of the device rather than on the screen section, that way when pressing them they wouldnt have caused this slight give in the slide mechanism!! Jesus, HTC need to employ some of us from here!!

Good point, but a few guys do. Black with his AT&T one, few others etc. Just looking for some opinions. Personally, I think the spring could be a little more resistive.
I got mine today finally from Clove, lucky enough was in the first shipment have been setting it up for the last couple of hours and the keyboard is fine.

I would agree with you to a point, Syphon Filter.
When looking at the screen, it seems that the palm of my hand is catching the bottom right edge of the keyboard in its closed position and 'twisting' it a little when the volume is adjusted.
However, I've found that the volume buttons are in the right place when using them incall.
(The actual sliding mechanisim feels pretty solid to me.)
There's a little give, not so much a shift but more of a flex, definitely feels good for a sideways slider.

I guess it's 28 pounds delivery with DHL and 20 the old fashion way. At least when ordered from here in Finland. Didn't dare to accept the order yet.
Virtually no give in mine at all, feels solid.
Mine is solid and has been "thoroughly" used and handed around for wow factor for the past few days. It is well built and better, if I remember correctly, than the O2 XDA IIs (Blue Angel) for it's keyboard sturdiness mechanism.

Appears firm to me, there's a little scraping noise as the keyboard is opened but not on close. Haven't been able to pin down where it's coming from yet.

I there's a little slidey thing that covers the ribbon cable. As you open/close that it moves. That's what is causing the noise your just described.

Totally agree with the comment about the volume buttons, too. Bit daft putting them somewhere where the act of pressing them means you're also opening up the keyboard...

Yeah they should have just moved then onto the bottom half of the slide!
So when you press your volume buttons (just enough to make them "press") does your slide move at all?
Mine does a tiny bit. if the spring was a little stiffer it would be spot on.
What about the power button when trying to remove the back?
I keep turning it back on when I want it to be switched off and remove the battery! Just something I will have to get used to no doubt!
After receiving my Fuze/Rap today, I also noticed a 1/32 inch twist when opening the phone. My only only other HTC slide experience is the 8125 which after 4 years has a more tight opening action.
I have to have faith in the Raph after all the faithful years with my other slide out.

it sounds like something comes loose when i slide my fuze open. then there is something that rattles around in it. i tried to return it but all the fuzes they had at the store made the same sound. unique?
Mine is a little loose as well - I wondered if anyone else had the same issue. I can (with very little effort) make the screen move about 2-3mm away from the keyboard. It does feel a lot more loose than the 8525 did to me.. I'm not sure how that will play out over the lifetime of the phone, but I can expect it to only get worse (hopefully not!)

I finally got my Eee Pad from NewEgg, and I was generally pretty happy with it for the week I've had it so far. Just this morning though, I bumped into my door while holding it and the power button got swiped. Now there's a visible dent in the area around the button, and the power button itself appears to be broke. When I press it down, there's no longer the "click" that you would expect when you press the button. And of course, it no longer turns on.
Needless to say, I'm pretty irate right now. I didn't really bump into the door hard at all, and I would consider this damage to be normal wear and tear. Can anybody recommend a course of action here? Should I attempt to repair it myself, or should I just go ahead and RMA it right now? Even though NewEgg says they have a replacement only policy for the Eee Pad, the rep I talked to said if they don't have any in stock at the time the RMA is processed, it'll turn into a refund instead.

I don't think you can get a replacement or refund from newegg...but give it a shot. Maybe your transformer is just in the "sleep mode of death" Have you tried to hold the button down for more than 10 seconds, wait a minute, then hold the power down again for 5 seconds to turn it back on?
No offence but thats not normal wear and tear, that's accidental/negligence. Not covered under any warranty, unless you took out accidental cover (insurance) when you purchased it.
You physically damaged it. I don't see why you feel entitled to a replacement.
If you have no moral issues with trying to return it or get it replaced then by all means try ans maybe you'll get one.
You're not entitled to one though and the fact that you think you are is comical.

@csmail, no I don't think I'm entitled to get it replaced/refunded. And I don't think it's a question of morals here. If NewEgg accepts it, then great! If not, oh well. Now if I went back to NewEgg and protested the rejection, then that would be ethically questionable. At least in my mind. I'm really at the mercy of NewEgg here. I can only cross my fingers.
I still, however, think this is normal wear and tear. It wasn't a bad brush against the door at all, and it's really something that would've happened eventually unless I babied it constantly.
Looking back to the commercial ASUS released where they had the guy out and about town with the Eee Pad, where he's in class taking notes with it, then he's outside with his friends where he callously undocks the Eee Pad to show his friends something, then he's at the coffee shop with his girlfriend playing a head-to-head video game with both of them banging away on it, and then he's at the skateboard park taking pics with it I'm now thinking "yeah right!". With that kind of treatment, his Eee Pad would be dead in a week.
Apparently, the only place this thing should be used is within the safe confines of your home held only by edges and placed softly on a pillow in a quiet secluded room when not in use. I'm not particularly rough with my gadgets. But devices such as these are meant to be *used*, not put in a glass case to be displayed. And it's supposed to double as a netbook? Yea, good luck with that.
I used a Samsung Galaxy Tab before this, and compared to the Eee Pad, that thing is built like a tank. It's still going strong.
Now with that rant out of the way, I was generally pleased with the Eee Pad. The IPS display was simply awesome. Battery life was also great. There were some software quirks, but I noticed ASUS has a FW update available which I was about to install sometime during the next few days. But I guess that's out now. If NewEgg has mercy on me, I'm on the fence on whether or not to get a replacement or wait until the new Galaxy Tabs come out.
You are trying to justify returning a damaged device by saying it would have happened anyway unless you babied it. I'm not sure about other people but I baby all my gadgets and that's why they never get damaged like this. I'm not saying it would never happen to me because accidents do happen from time to time just like it did to you, but no accidents yet (knock on wood). From a moral standpoint, if you think you can get away with it and it doesn't bother you then maybe you'll get lucky and they will accept it. But for the record, no matter how many times you tell yourself its normal wear and tear banging something up against a door... its not.

I think you are on the hook for this, so your options are send it into Asus for repair or repair it yourself knowing this likely voids your warranty.

No I don't think NewEgg should give me my money back/give me a replacement because of a damage that I think would've happened eventually. The ball is entirely in their court and I will live with whatever decision they make. It'd be stupid not to try though. There is nothing ethically questionable about this unless I was being deceitful, which I am not.

I guess thats where you and I differ. It wasn't like I was using my Eee Pad as a door stop while not in use or something. It was a casual bump against a soft wooden door. It wasn't even a head-on collision. It was a swipe against the door. I am on order of magnitude way rougher with my cell phone, the aforementioned Galaxy Tab, and my laptop and they are all chugging away like the day I bought them.
I guess the original point of my post was to rant about the build quality of these Eee Pads. I buy these things to be tools, not to have to show off how much money I have. I wanted to be able to throw this thing into my bag when I go on travel or out into the field like I can with my Galaxy Tab. Turns it out it's way too fragile for that. It can't even take a casual bump. People reading this thread and considering an Eee Pad may want to take notice if durability is a requirement.

You should try the XOOM instead. I miss its metal housing and overall superior stability. But it doesn't have the dock, IPS screen or the very useful ASUS software. I am selling mine on eBay right now but it was a very tough decision!

Can I suggest that you plugin your charger to wake it up? Maybe that way you can at least still use it...

Not saying you were being neglectful or anything, and yes it would be ideal for it to survive a brush with a hard surface. As I said before, if newegg takes it back, more power to you. however, just because you had a bad experience with it don't deem the build quality to be crap. I am happy with mine Having said that, as a former xoom owner I would say that the xoom would have come out of this unscathed most likely (not must because the power button is on the back either). The xoom was just a little more solid feeling, but it had it's drawbacks as well which I won't get into. In any case I hope it works out for you and you can remain a transformer owner. Also if you didn't already might I suggest purchasing the asus sleeve, it have been just enough protection to save you.

Personally I think this thread was started by a troll since it's their second ever posting on a flame worthy subject. But for the record, Newegg is obviously not responsible for someone damaging their own device so asking them to eat $400 because someone was careless seems rather deplorable.
The answer is pay to get it fixed or fix it yourself.
As far as not being deceitful I would agree with you if you submitted an RMA request that said "Banged Device Against Door and Broke It". You did not do that because it would be declined so you lied. You're not betting on their mercy, you're betting on them being too busy to notice that you trashed it.
Anyway, I like Newegg. They have great customer service, reasonable prices and cater to the geeks among us. It's a shame when people lie and cheat to get game a system that once broken leaves us in the hands of Best Buy and Amazon.
There's a reason most of us use cases or put silicon skins on our fancy little devices when out in the wild, they are fragile. I don't see anything about the build quality of the Transformer to make me think it is more or less so true for this device.

Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But I can assure you I am not trolling.
The good news is I just managed to fix it myself just now. Turns out the bump caused the power button to get stuck. I took a dulled box cutter and pried the back lid open just a little to unstick it. Now the button clicks when pressed like it should and everything works as before.
So that this thread isn't a total waste of time, I'll just say that people need to know that this thing doesn't have the greatest of build qualities. Especially since it can convert into a netbook, the Eee Pad really needs to be more rugged. Even when in netbook mode, the buttons and so forth are still vunerable and if I treated it the same way I treat my laptop, I'd have a $400 ($550 including the dock) paper weight in no time.

I had to talk to a customer rep to get an RMA number for the Eee Pad. It's not my fault she didn't ask for specifics. Furthermore, I would presume they inspect the merchandise before proceeding with the RMA at which point they would
clearly be able to see the damage on the power button. How can I possibly be still at fault if they decided to still proceed with the RMA?

Great! Know where we can get one for the Eee Pad? I got the official $40 ASUS sleeve for it from NewEgg, but as you can probably conclude by now that didn't do squat as far as protecting anything. And not those sleeves where you have to take the tablet out of it to use it. That hurts usability if you're trying to use your tablet like a digital book or something.

Do any Nexus 5s NOT have the loose button issue?

Hi all. Just got my Nexus 5 in the mail. It mostly looks great, but the volume and power buttons are loose and rattly, as many have complained about here. I had this problem with an old HTC phone, and it eventually drove me nuts. Not sure I can hang with it in this case either. Question is, is it worth going through the whole replacement process to try to get a better unit, or are they pretty much all like this?
I got mine today, buttons are secure and make no noise whatsoever. Give it a shot

Out of all the problems this would be the least worrying for me. There's a good chance certain cases even would fix this and I would hate to receive a replacement with worse problems.
My power button wiggles but no audible sounds are heard with heavy tapping.

My buttons were solid as a rock initially. They loosened up a little bit after about a week. Yesterday you could hear/feel the rattle whenever you were typing or pressing anywhere near the volume rocker or power button. They would also rattle and shake when you jiggled the phone.
I thought about exchanging it, but other than the rattling the phone was perfect. I didn't want to switch and end up with a worse problem, dead pixels, speaker issues, or whatever else people have been mentioning.
I ended up doing the fix that I saw on youtube, may have originated from someone here. Popped the case off and put tiny pieces of paper between the power button/switch and volume rockers/switches to eliminate the gap between the switch and the the floating buttons (they're not physically attached). The only difference was I used sticky notes with the tacky side facing out towards the buttons so the paper will never have a chance to shift out of place.
Buttons are rock solid again, even more firm than before.
*Last resort of course. Tinkering with the inside voids your warranty.
My first N5 had loose power button and loose volume rocker that rattled quite a bit so i replaced it. The buttons on my new one are perfect, no rattling at all

Its not a £600 CNC machined statement to the world, its a 300 quid phone and how anyone can make a mountain of this particular mole hill is way beyond me. The mass of the buttons is so small the noise generated is hardly the equivalent of shoving your head in the speakers at a Prodigy gig.
FWIW my power button rattles if i shake the phone however i very rarely shake the phone in such a fashion that i would hear it and thankfully i am one of the few that owns a Nexus 5 and doesn't seem to live in an anechoic chamber

While I understand your analogy, your comparison is kind of ridiculous as the PS4 is not a device that's primarily meant to be used and abused, or handled in situations like a mobile device is. A smartphone is meant to be taken everywhere, tossed in bags/pockets, have fingers beating on it for hours a day... A PS4 on the other hand is primarily meant to be stationary with minimal movement. It's built to a different standard.
I can throw in an extraneous irrelevant comparison like yours. I've got a $90 Canon SD1100 IS from 5 years ago with a camera button that's meant to be pressed over and over again, it is also a floating button, and it doesn't rattle. It clicks as it's supposed to and remains solid otherwise. It was also dirt cheap but still built solidly. I've taken thousands of pictures with that thing and the button is still exactly the same as the day I bought it.
My Nexus 5 buttons were initially solid, but to have them degrade and become wobbly and flimsy after only a few weeks was a little disheartening. Sending text messages, or tapping the screen anywhere near the volume/power caused them to rattle. Yeah it was $400, and several hundred cheaper than other flagships, but it's still a button, designed to be pressed over and over again. To have it become loose and jiggly so quickly (or for some people, ship like that) is unacceptable to me. It was an easy fix for me, but for others I can totally understand them wanting to exchange it for a better built unit. The button rattle was even brought up in the Anandtech Nexus 5 review.
If you don't care about the rattle, or accept it because the cost of the unit is less than other phones, that's fine. But don't tell other people to disregard it because it's cheap. Like my cheap $90 5 year old camera, something can be cheap and still be built to a good standard. The Nexus 5 is a fantastic device, but a flaw is a flaw, and I understand people not ignoring it.
Had my n5 since launch on sprint on November 8th and all my buttons do not rattle.

2 nexus 5s (1 had a defective microphone) and neither had loose buttons.
I guess I was lucky, no rattle at all. Doesn't matter anyway since I use a case.

My first nexus 5 (which I returned for a different issue) had loose volume and power buttons that wiggled. The second one, only the power button wiggles. Seems like they may still be figuring out exactly how to fit the button's in right.

mine is the same. i use a spigen slim armor case and one other case and both fix any button "looseness"
My volume rocker rattles pretty badly. I hear it when I have haptic feedback on and am texting. It's almost gotten to the point where I think I just might get a replacement but the only problem is I would not have a phone while I am waiting for a replacement
There apparently has already been a new revision of Nexus 5 hardware out that fixes the rattle problems (and speaker).

You can see the housing around the buttons is much thinner/tighter now to prevent the lateral jiggling. The speaker grill holes are also larger.
My volume and power buttons are fine, although there's a slight rattle when I shake it due to the internal components (i.e. if I hold both rockers firm to the casing and give it a slight shake, I hear it).
However, out of curiosity I did the same thing with my N4 and it rattled too, which I noticed for the first time just then. Honestly, I don't even notice it. Like many have said, it's the very least of the problems and I wouldn't risk receiving a replacement with something worse like dead pixels.

Home button loose

Does anyone else have loose home button on their phone? It makes noises when you lightly tap on it and doesn't sound too good. I've also went to the T-Mobile store today and noticed my home button is more flush than the both display models they had. Anyone else face the same issue?

If it feels off go in and have them pull out a brand new one. When there in store. If yours feels off, have it replaced! I do this with any new phone. I tediously inspect it. If I think something feels off I have them show me a new one and compare. That way I can show them right then and there, this is why you're going to give me another phone lol

I have a feeling my front glass is slightly misaligned. Will be checking the store model to make sure, as the corner by the back button seems a bit sunken in. The frame definitely comes up over the glass a little.
I was just in the Samsung Experience Store and noticed that of the four regular S6s they had, three had loose homebuttons. The Edges seemed fine though.
My t mobile version is a bit loose as well. It feels like a minor issue but it is pretty annoying....
I picked up my S6 this morning and have noticed that a light tap on the home button makes a noise. It's annoying and it makes an otherwise solid feeling, quality phone feel cheap. I guess I'll try taking it back to see if I can get another one that doesn't have this issue.
The frame is suppose to slightly overlap the screen by the way

Well i noticed it after you guys wrote about it here. I have a S6 32Gig White, a friend has a S6 64gig Black version, i checked his S6 and he doesn't have this issue.
But honestly, it is not like i tap on the button all the time, you can only hear it if you slightly tap on it. If you fully press it, you don't even hear it. It is also not like it makes any sounds when moving the phone, therefore i am not going through all the pain to get this replaced just to receive another one with a loose button

Yeah, if I didn't have this Edge without the issue it might not bother me so much
I went back to the T-Mo store and their display model had it. One of the guys opened another one up for me and it too was affected. I ended up walking out with the phone I had. Not gonna make them open a bunch of boxes until they find one that doesn't. At this point the ratio makes it seem like the loose button is normal and any that aren't are the odd ones. Ah well.

That's unfortunate. Perhaps I'll keep mine for a while and deal with it then swap? Wait on a different production run or something.
Mine is nice and tight, but already scratched up. I mean my fingers are rough but jeez. Some soft material on there.

Well i was wrong about it not bothering me It started annoying me after you guys wrote about it...
I went to a T-Mobile store to check if the devices had the same problem, and yes 2 of them had, 1 did not...
Dunno if it is worth to send it back now and wait up to 6 days to receive a replacement that has probably the same issue -.-
P.s. After pressing the button down very hard a few times, the right side stopped making noises, the mid now also seems to be fine, it can only be heared if touching the very left side of the button...

Screen lift?

So I got my 8GB/256GB Pro a couple days ago during the launch event. Next I day i notice that when I press the home screen where the fingerprint is located and the opposite side near the top of the screen I hear as if the glue underneath is not sticking and sounding like the screen is lifting, or some part beneath it is lifting. Anyone else experiencing this? Its rather annoying.
how did you get it at the launch event? i was there, and as far as i'm aware, it wasn't available for purchase there.

Yea it was at the flagship T-Mobile store in SF. As for the screen sounding like its lifting is only when the phone isn't warm. Its really bad when I wake up in the morning when it hasn't been used as the adhesive has probably cooled. I just hope I can prove it to the rep when I take it for exchange.
So I went back to the store and apparently their floor model is doing the same thing. Some experienced similar issues, I wonder if the first round of batches have these issues with most of them. I didn't exchange it, but it appears this is starting to become a common issue.

yikes, don't get it wet, if the screen is moving that means the seal is bad for sure.

No issues here, but I have the unlocked model.
I have the same issue (kind of). In my case it only happens once or twice a day. But it is really annoying. Im planning to use hairdryer and some pressure to strengthen the adhesive. Is that a bad idea? Has anyone got a better solution? I travel a lot and and the country im currently in does not have any Oneplus service. So sending device to service is not an option for me.

I have the exact same problem with my OnePlus 7T Pro. First it was only when I pressed harder, now its nearly every thime I touch that area. I gonna contact OnePlus for RMA.
Add me as another one with the issue. Ordered right after launch directly from OnePlus. Anywhere from 2-3x a day, to as many as 5-6.

I forgot that I canceled the order from the OnePlus-Shop and bought it from Amazon. (faster delivery)
This weekend I sent it back. (it was in the timespan for free retirement of the order, I also told them about the defect)
Now I will wait till I got my money back and order a new one.
I need root and because of that my device wasn't really used till now. I still use my OP5T for daily.
If a "official" Rooting-Solution is out I will order a new OP7TPro.
