No 5G for T-Mobile AT&T or Sprint do I wait? - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Questions & Answers

So spending a thousand plus on a phone that won't take advantage of the network doesn't seem like a good decision to me. Even the Verizon version with 5G is first generation. The Qualcomm chip x55 is due out in the next few months. The question is do I jump the gun and and get a phone that is at launch behind the times. I read an interview where the CEO of T-Mobile said they are waiting for a version with the x55 chip which will make it more compatible with their Network and give a better experience to the end user.
I'm leaning towards waiting instead of jumping the gun. I think Samsung should have waited to truly make the phone second to none.
I know I'm going to be pissed when no 5G version comes out for T-Mobile. I'm not willing to jump to Verizon to be on a first-generation network that is already out outdated

I'm on T-Mobile. I saw no reason to spend an extra $200 on 5G. Not yet. Maybe the Note 11.

I don't see a reason to switch my phone. I have a Note 8 I skipped the note 9 to wait for the Note 10. But with that Hefty price tag I want to be sure that I have the latest and greatest. Knowing that new hardware is coming in a few months makes me want to wait.

I upgrade every year, but I never pay full price. I sold a couple phones to pay for my 512GB Note 9, which I bought used. Well. It was used. But the guy just received it as an insurance claim, so it had actually never been used. I took all the factrou plastic off of it. But I only paid $700 for it in November of last year.
Here's how I'm getting the Note 10+ for basically free:
Sold my 512GB Note 9 for $585.
Bought a 128GB Note 9 for $400.
So I had a 128GB Note 9 plus $185 in my pocket.
Traded THAT Note 9 in on a Note 10+ and Samsung gave me $600 for it. (that's a $200 profit).
Samsung also gave me a $200 Samsung Gift card for reserving and preordering.
I signed up for a credit card that gives me $200 cash back, which I can apply to my cc bill, if I spend $1,000 in the first three months. I put the Note 10+ and some motorcycle parts on it that I wanted anyway, and have already spent $1,000. Cash back is on its way.
So I'll break it down:
Aura Glow Note 10+ $1,100
Sales Tax ~ $31
Trade in 128GB Note 9 -$600
Note 10+ purchase price $531
Cash from 512 N9 sale -$185
Cash back from CC -$200
Total cost of Note 10+ $146
So I have invested $146 in a new phone. But in September, I'll use my $200 Samsung gift card to buy the new Gear Active 2. It starts at $200, so it will basically be free. I don't need it, so I will sell it for maybe $175.
Note 10+ $146
Sell watch -$175
PROFIT $29

I am waiting for the note 10+ 5g to come out. I was disappointed again that verizon got the exclusive for it but i do wonder if its the x50 or x55. There are no specific specs that confirm it. Or maybe i just didnt look too closely.
Like you said, maybe the other carriers were trying to get x55 modem instead.
I will be really disappointed if the later note 5g doesnt come with x55 and it is the same x50.
At this moment, i highly doubt that they will put the x55. I am hoping that they will do though. I really want to use my 2 yr contract upgrade when the time comes.

For $1200 I'm waiting, either for a 5G model or if my current Note 8 breaks, I'll break down and buy the 4G version.

From what I've been reading that seems to be the plan they're waiting for the x55 to be incorporated into the Note 10. Which should happen towards the end of the year.

Hopefully.
I did look up the fcc site for the verizon model and it only uses the nr bands n260 and n261. So maybe it uses only the mmwaves. It could be x50
Are you thinking of waiting for the 5g model?

Oh I've read many articles saying that the Verizon version is using the older x 50. Verizon's business model is to show market dominance but I'm assuming and I feel they jumped the gun cuz I read they had all kinds of issues with their 5G service. The x55 will support multiple bands and multiple protocols. When T-Mobile and Sprint merge they're going to have three bands of 5G service. Apparently the higher the frequency the more obstructions will affect the signal strength another words buildings Etc. TMobile has a 600 megahertz band and Sprint has a 2.4 and I believe they both have a band which is similar to Verizon.
Verizon's just flexing their muscle trying to show market dominance. And it will probably work judging by the number of people that are pre-ordering. There's no exclusivity TMobile AT&T and Sprint just decided to wait for a better chip.

Samsung has already confirmed that the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G will come to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint once its temporary exclusivity period with Verizon ends. All three carriers sell the Galaxy S10 5G.

Yea i believe that.
Verizon had always that mentality that they are comfortable in their position and their customers would care less.
In the 5g service, they didnt take in account of real world physics.
They will be in trouble once tmobile and sprint merges. Their combined spectrum and technology is def much better.
My theory on merging complications is that att and verizon are trying to stop it behind the lines.

From tech republic:
Likewise, CNET reports that the*Galaxy Note 10+ 5G for AT&T and T-Mobile will use the second-generation Qualcomm X55 modem. The newer modem is anticipated to address power consumption and heat dissipation issues, though those models "will only be able to access their sub-6Ghz networks, not their millimeter wave service." Sub-6 GHz frequencies will not be able to deliver the headline-making speeds,*though will deliver more consistent coverage.

I'm not certain. I won't buy a 5G phone this year regardless of the chip. I was more referencing the statement that Verizon doesn't have exclusivity. Samsung claims they do. I opted for the Note 10+. I'd rather not have spotty 5G switching on and off destroying my battery. I will wait until it matures a bit.

I agree with you 100% I might even wait for the note 11 even if the Note 10 later on this year comes with the x55 let them work out the bugs I don't want to be the guinea pig with the phone that chews up batteries and has spotty coverage. I think T-Mobile AT&T and Sprint made a good move passing on the 5G variant. Verizon's just going to market the hell out of it making it seem like we're the only carrier with 5G phones that work when in fact you're using a first generation I go as far as to say beta testing 5G network.

Yeah, I'm not a real fan of being a beta tester when I have to pay 1380 dollars for the privilege.

Someone is selling the Korean 5G Variant of the Note 10 - supposedly LTE will work on ATT - but will the 5G work on ATT when ATT Launches 5G ? Just curious....

I think it depends if its international unlocked.
I never used international phones in the usa recently so im not entirely sure.
I think that each country or region has its own 5g bands. Korea uses diff 5g bands than the usa.

Verizon won't be in trouble when T-Mobile and Sprint merges. T-Mobile and Sprint customers will be in trouble. Its going to take years to combine the two networks and I expect pricing to increase as they try to be a premier carrier.

Quite upset over the carrier situation in the USA

Here we are constantly being ripped off with old-gen single core processors, bloat, and slow updates while our friends in the UK have the Galaxy S II.
Try this experiment I witnessed earlier... Go to the official samsung website and browse, you will find re-batched galaxy s devices with a factory over clock, a different radio, and outdated os versions... All advertised as the best; meanwhile scroll to the bottom and change the country to the UK to be introduced with the Galaxy S 2 ad, with the option of various carriers and available to buy.
It might be a repetition of last year where we get our carrier-branded devices 6 months later, with bloat, slow updates, and stupid contacts.
I haven't an idea on how to import one of those beauties from Europe.. but I know for sure it won't come cheap with the euro to usd conversion rate, and the whole process of importing.

Must be really new to this as this has been the way it is done for as long as i can remember. You can get one from EU but it will cost alot and it is not Gonna work on ATT 3G unless you get it from Telstra which uses the same 3G bands as ATT. If you want to stay up to date then I would get an unlocked version from over seas.
Nothing new. All carriers there are GSM so the market is bigger with much more handset variety.

The SGS II is quad band 3G (up to 21Mbps HSPA+) so it will indeed work with AT&T w/ 3G

Yea it finally appears that we can import an unbranded, unlocked android device released in europe such as the s2 and just have to pop in the ATT sim. Of course for those that want to pay thru the nose for the euro/usd conversion. Looks like it will run about $750 or so

There is amember on here using one on att. You may need to buy it for a specific carrier. Not sure.
Quad band is not nessesarily universal. There are atleast 5bands that can be used but i believe that all the sgs2s have the att bands all around. I know there is atleast one varient already available that does. I may post the link later where a member has the place it can be ordered posted. Search on my phone is not fun

The baddest AT&T Android device from a U.S. carrier is the Atrix and we have it here. So we're on par with what they have down there and our network speeds are faster mostly because it's not over saturated as theirs.

I would be fine with this situation if I had the choice to have an off-contract phone bill that doesnt subsidize new phones.

Where To Buy 4G Note 10.1 In US?

I've looked everywhere for a Note 10.1 and can only find it on Amazon for $600+. Is this the only place to buy it? Why isn't this available in Best Buy, Wal Mart, ATT Stores etc?
I'd really like to pick one up by the end of the year.....

There's no LTE version of the galaxy note 10.1, just 3g (the 8020--an LTE version doesn't seem to be shipping to retailers anywhere). You can buy the 3g galaxy note 10.1 from other vendors, including Sams Stores; however, most are higher than Amazon's price--expect to pay $625-$629 USD. (Right now, Negri Electronics has the unlocked 3g version available for $595 USD, I'm not sure how long that price will be valid, Negri is usually higher. http://negrielectronics.com/samsung...l?gclid=CI_s68298rMCFQmCQgodYWoAkw#.ULZxSqL-u ) If you really want LTE, look at the galaxy note 2, but expect to pay about the same price for the off contract version from US carriers (going unlocked international right now limits you to 3g). I'm seriously considering upgrading my existing Android tablet with the WIFI only version of the note 10.1. I'm not doing a lot of traveling right now and LTE isn't available in my area. Should I do more traveling next year to LTE areas, I'll get a prepaid MIFI to get LTE to supplement Internet access when WIF hotspots aren't available. I use VOIP on both my tablet and smartphone via WIFI and am happy with it, but then I've used VOIP at home exclusively for the past 8 years.

There will never be an N8000 sold in the U.S.; Samsung doesn't sell (or allow to be sold) any unlocked devices. So anywhere you get it it's going to be imported. An LTE Note passed the FCC a while ago with AT&T's bands so I'd expect them to offer it shortly; maybe in the beginning of the year. And any Note you will import is going to be HSPA+ 21MB which is 3G, not 4G. And if you find a N8020 it's highly unlikely it's LTE bands will be compatible with the U.S. carriers.
verizon gnote 10.1 with LTE is coming soon (allegedly). Google "sch-i925"
I'm not sure if this is bogus news....but anyone hear anything else about this mythical device?
There is LTE version of Note it has been launched in South Korea recently with JB as default and it also supports voice calling. It should launch in US soon as that will be the key market for the LTE version. The only reason Samsung delays its products in US is because of Apple Patent law suits

I made a parenthetical reference to it in my post above. It's the 8020. It's been trotted out for press views but I couldn't find any references to it being stocked anywhere yet, even Korea. Given the non-uniform LTE standards stateside, you'll probably only be able to get this via a carrier. I would expect the off contract price to be slightly higher than the off contract price for the Note 2. I wouldn't expect to see the 8020 showing up at any US carriers until late in the 1st quarter of 2013 or possibly not even until the 2nd quarter.
I might get the att version if it ever comes out. 600 + for this tablet and 3g is just crazy .

Sorry, I forgot my audience, I mean 3g not LTE which of course is true 4g. (I'm used to talking with people who don't understand)
Kind of depressing though, I can go to any electronics store and buy and iPad, yet a 3g Note 10.1 is next to impossible. And they wonder why android hasn't shaken up the tablet market? I don't want to buy this device if in 3 months I can get it through ATT by that point it there will be something newer...... I don't understand this business model.
So my next question would be is are there any high end android tablets I can get through ATT? Locally it is just the Galaxy Tab 2 which isn't really what I'm looking for. Also I would like to be able to make calls from the device if possible, but this is not mandatory.
Thanks.

I don't see a new LTE tablet coming out at the same time as the inevitable upgrade to the Note 10.1. There will probably be several months delay again in getting LTE tablets out because Samsung will need to work with individual carriers on LTE versions (same will be true of Europe as it rolls out LTE to more regions). If you live in an area with a Sams Store and have a membership or know someone who has a membership, check them out. They carry unlocked GSM phones and tablets. They have the Samsung P7320 (Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G LTE) as well as the 3G Note 10.1. I can't say how many stores have all items in stock. The problem with LTE in the US, as usual, is fragmented standards. This means that most LTE devices are only available through a carrier unless you're diligent and shop around online (NegriElectronics and Ebay are sources that occasionally have unlocked LTE devices that run on specific US carriers' LTE networks). You pay through the nose buying an on contract device locked to a fairly expensive monthly data plan that is added on top of a minimum of minutes for voice calls and texting. When you add up the cost of monthly fees over a 2-year minimum period plus the subsidized cost of a device, it's generally much, much more expensive than buying an unlocked, off contract device and then buying a prepaid service like Straight Talk (you can get an AT&T SIM or T-Mobile SIM, depending on which service is best in your area) https://www.straighttalk.com/secure/ServicePlans. There are also MVNOs for CDMA carriers Verizon and Sprint that have better prepaid monthly plans. Just take your time and do some research. If you're willing to carry a table rather than a phlablet, another option is getting a prepaid LTE MIFI device, which will be pretty small. Heck, if you have an LTE cellphone, check to see if you can use it as a hotspot.

I can tether with my Note, but I'm planning on using this as a headunit in my car so I'd like to have Google navigation without having to be tethered constantly, plus according to the guy I know at ATT he says it will be $10 per month for a tablet because at work I'm on a family share plan of 10 lines and we only have 7 now.
I will call a few Sams Clubs I am a member but online they just have the wifi note 10.1 so I wasn't sure.

Chances of activating HTC U12+ on Sprint?

I was devastated when I found out this phone wasn't officially coming to Sprint. I've had my HTC 10 for about two years now and have been due for an upgrade for almost a month. I've used HTC flagship phones since the Evo 4G. The only ones I haven't owned are the odd Ones and U11. I was looking forward to getting my hands on the U12+ with the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform. I don't really want to switch carriers since I've been with Sprint for over a decade. If I do switch carriers, I guess it would be between T-Mobile and Project Fi. Is there any chance this phone will be able to be activated on Sprint or are there hardware limitations?

You should wait out. Spring and T-Mobile will be one. I never switch carriers over phone. Did that mistake with iPhone 4s.

The Sprint and T-Mobile merger is going to take a long time to complete. The merger with Nextel is pretty much the reason I've been with Sprint. I have heard nothing but great things about Project Fi, but I have actually enjoyed the Sense experience. I might wait for the Pixel 3 to see what new goodness that brings. I'm not in a hurry to move on from my HTC 10, but I hate that the U12+ isn't a choice for me at the moment.

All the reviews have pointed out the unlocked model will not work on Sprint, so it is hardware limitations.
That is so depressing. I guess I'll be switching to carriers in the near future.

You'll be doing yourself a huge favor. I switched from Sprint to Cricket wireless about 4 years ago. Prices are good, service is phenomenal.

I plan on switching to T-Mobile as I'm in Sprint too and the Sprint network is terrible

I have not regretted my jump to T-Mobile from Sprint 1 year ago. The u12 may not be the best phone for tmo however. It is missing band 71 which is already important in many markets and will be greatly expanded over next 2 years.

I'm having a bit of t-mobile regret...I was with Sprint for 16 yrs, had great service in my area. T-mobile is just as good in town but out in the rural, it sucks @ss, guess my next phone will need band 71 for sure.

Hey Ken ... somehow I lost your contact info, maybe you'll see this post. I left Sprint a number of years ago, with AT&T for the last 3-4. Been contemplating a move to T-Mo, since they began offering the Veteran discount. My thinking has been that the merger and band 71 might bridge the gaps that T-Mo still has in their coverage.
Have you considered the OnePlus 6? It has band 71, and we might revisit the old days with you leading the way with development. I may just pull the trigger on T-Mo and the OP6. What do you think?

Hey Bill, long time no see! Yeah, that was the main reason I switched to TMO, nice veteran discount...can't beat 5 lines for 110 total. I haven't really looked at the OP6 but I'll have to check it out, though I may be hanging up development. Good to see ya around here still.

Yeah, check it out for sure. They've really done a good job with the software ... many of the tweaks we used to depend on you for!

[AT&T] No Promos for Upgrading?

Was upgrading to the Note 10+ and saw the BOGO offer and also, if you order online, you get $150 Visa Gift card... After looking further, and calling AT&T Directly, I found out that those two promos only apply if you add a new line or are a new customer. Is that the same across the board with all carriers or just with AT&T?

Verizon was the same. Only the BOGO offer if you add a new line. And Verizon was only going to give me $400 trade-in for my S10+. I preordered through Best Buy and they gave me $600 for my trade-in. Preorder bonuses/gifts suck this time around.
My wife and I are both T users and we both were looking to upgrade - until all the details were released last night.
My prior phones were rooted while my Wife bought a phone from T. I have been debating if I still need a rooted phone or not. The main things the custom XDA roms provide me is availability to use AdBlocker, Hotspot, and of course access to the lastest ROMs and features at the sacrifice of getting the latest and greatest T CSC.
But now I see that the "5G' model is not available on T. It might come out later in the year. But it will locked to T. Getting a 5G phone was a good justification to upgrade even though there will NEVER be 5G service in the sticks where I live.
We think we will hold off for now.

And the T-Mobile version will be an upgraded phone with the Qualcomm x55 modem. It will support more bands and downward compatible. Consume less power I'll give you a better 5G experience.

But the US Snapdragon phone are locked and since you won't have root you cannot change the CSC from TMOB to T like you could years ago? Or are you saying you can use the TMOB 5G model on T?
Verizon is giving me 450 off an old Note 8 sitting around here and the 150 dollar credit with Samsung. I didn't qualify for the BOGO, but I'm satisfied.
Take a look at Best Buy, I got $600 off trade-in for my AT&T S10+

AT&T requiring one of the unlimited plans to actually use 5G on your phone

Was anybody else aware of this in the states with the AT&T variants? I'm so pissed at this greedy company right now its beyond belief. Due to the pandemic and Tele commuting I'm barely using my phone data as is and just use wifi but in order to use the 5G capability if I'd need it I would have to upgrade to one of the terrible unlimited plans to use my $1500 phone's 5G capabilites. Un f'n Real!!!

There are already a couple threads about this.

Then don't upgrade your plan. You don't have to use 5G. Most places don't even have 5G yet.
I didn't and I understand 5G is still spotty and unreliable but to require an unlimited plan to use one of the biggest selling points of your new phone is just insane. Didn't any any threads on this, are they in this forum?

The unlimited plans are the best way to go with AT&T is you use the internet a lot on your phone.
5G or not.
&
Direct TV sucks...
Which I don't, especially since the pandemic. Also I already have 60gb on my plan, paying more for unlimited when they can still throttle you is asinine

If you don't need to coverage you could use a 2nd tier carrier instead. AT&T is better to deal with than Verizon.
No one has the coverage they offer...
If you lean on the Customer Loyalty group ie Retainment they can offer plans not available through normal channels.
Don't get mad... get assertive

I have leaned on the att loyalty department and pay less than 200 dollars for 4 lines 4 new phones and unlimited plan without 5G.
There have been conversations with AT&T that they are looking into activating 5G on some of the older plans, but these things can take time. And like some of the folks have said already, the coverage isn't still the greatest yet, but it will get there. I think we need to be a bit patient with the carriers, they are having to deal with the staffing and such in the pandemic, just like we all are

Yes, those poor conglomerate telecoms who buy dumb assets like Direct TV and then write it off passing the savings to us the consumers in the way of an unlimited more expensive plans. My bad for not sympathizing and looking out for their stock price. I'll do better next time

In the current state of AT&T 5G network still relying on 4G and is not taking advantage of carrier aggregation, the speed is not super fast compared to 4G. My DL speed using 5G with Note20 Ultra was around 100 Mbps vs 79 Mbps with 4G Note8. This is in San Francisco area.
Metro (Tmobile) is running a deal right now. 40 bucks a month unlimited with 5g if you port your number. Enjoying my 5g and glad I moved from ATT. We were on an unlimited plan and it was like 20 bucks a line plus 80 a month for the shared Data. Older plan that doesn't exist anymore. I'm paying about the same as I was, and I get 5g (not available on my old plan). And att was starting to really suck in my area......
