Quite upset over the carrier situation in the USA - Captivate General

Here we are constantly being ripped off with old-gen single core processors, bloat, and slow updates while our friends in the UK have the Galaxy S II.
Try this experiment I witnessed earlier... Go to the official samsung website and browse, you will find re-batched galaxy s devices with a factory over clock, a different radio, and outdated os versions... All advertised as the best; meanwhile scroll to the bottom and change the country to the UK to be introduced with the Galaxy S 2 ad, with the option of various carriers and available to buy.
It might be a repetition of last year where we get our carrier-branded devices 6 months later, with bloat, slow updates, and stupid contacts.
I haven't an idea on how to import one of those beauties from Europe.. but I know for sure it won't come cheap with the euro to usd conversion rate, and the whole process of importing.

Must be really new to this as this has been the way it is done for as long as i can remember. You can get one from EU but it will cost alot and it is not Gonna work on ATT 3G unless you get it from Telstra which uses the same 3G bands as ATT. If you want to stay up to date then I would get an unlocked version from over seas.

Nothing new. All carriers there are GSM so the market is bigger with much more handset variety.

The SGS II is quad band 3G (up to 21Mbps HSPA+) so it will indeed work with AT&T w/ 3G

Try being up here in Canada. We have half the phones at much slower speeds for twice the price per month. It's bruuuuutal.

Yea it finally appears that we can import an unbranded, unlocked android device released in europe such as the s2 and just have to pop in the ATT sim. Of course for those that want to pay thru the nose for the euro/usd conversion. Looks like it will run about $750 or so

...Radio frequencies... Not all unlocked quadband phones will work in at&t 3g bands because the 3g bands for at&t, t-mobile, & euro carriers are all different.

It can work just might not work on att 3g. I had an old quad band phone but it didn't have the att 3g band. I would make sure what bands it can work on first

There is amember on here using one on att. You may need to buy it for a specific carrier. Not sure.
Quad band is not nessesarily universal. There are atleast 5bands that can be used but i believe that all the sgs2s have the att bands all around. I know there is atleast one varient already available that does. I may post the link later where a member has the place it can be ordered posted. Search on my phone is not fun

Where do you live?
The baddest AT&T Android device from a U.S. carrier is the Atrix and we have it here. So we're on par with what they have down there and our network speeds are faster mostly because it's not over saturated as theirs.

I would be fine with this situation if I had the choice to have an off-contract phone bill that doesnt subsidize new phones.
Its a little ridiculous to spend $500+ on an overseas phone when we are already spending $20+/month on subsidies...

[Q] Nexus S on Rogers Canada question.

Hi all,
I am interested on purchasing a Nexus S from ebay to replace my G1. I do have a couple of questions before I jump both feet in it:
1- Does the Nexus S even work on the Roger's network in Canada? I got 2 years left on my contract.
2- I am guessing that the sim card from my G1 be used on the Nexus S?
3- Are there known performance issues with Nexus S/Rogers? Should I root the phone (CM7) to work better with the Rogers network?
Thanks in advance,
Heeter
man... if you are in the GTA area
buying it off P-mall will cost you less than buying it from eBay
and you even get to TEST it in the store before you check out, on eBay, you might get SCAMmed if it's a defective device, it's a huge hassle to recover your money back via paypal
1) yes it works Quad Band great as phone, EDGE only unless you have AWS 1700+2100 (up link & down link)
2) of course, normal size SIM card, not the micro size ones
3) no problem at all, ROM performance have nothing to do with network you are using
Hey AllGamer,
Thanks for your response!
What is P-Mall? I live in Edmonton, not Toronto. Would I be able to order online from this PMall?
Also, I didn't know that there was 2 sizes of SIM cards, Which one is the one I have on the back of my HTC Dream?
Finally, what is EDGE? Is this something that I have to ask of Rogers out here in Edmonton? Will the Nexus S work without this EGDE?
Thanks again, AllGamer.
Heeter
P-mall = Pacific Mall
4300 Steeles Ave. E,
Markham, Ontario
L3R 0Y5
Tel: (905) 470-8785
Fax: (905) 470-9234
there are like 20+ cell phone stores inside that mall, and you can barter for price reduction.
but since you are in Edmonton... i guess Pmall is out of the question, unless you plan to take a trip here in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) in the next few weeks/months
There are people from as far as Florida/California that will drive all the way here to shop at that mall... (it's kinda crazy if you ask me)
EDGE = 2G / 2.5G
HSPDA = 3G (also known as H) or 3.5G
HSDPA+ = 4G (not yet available for the public in Canada, but already being tested in small groups Windmobile, Telus, Bell)
Normal SIM card = lots of extra plastic and a corner chopped off
Mini SIM card = all the plastic material removed, only the SIM chip remains
Awesome, Thanks for your responses.
I do have a full size SIM card. I just looked at it, lots of plastic around chip and a corner is cutoff.
No Plans to travel to T.O. in the near future, . I was assuming that PMall was a store, not a whole mall.
My phone is currently HSPDA from Rogers, so it will be the same for the Nexus S.
Thanks for the great info.....
Heeter
Not sure why people would drive from Florida to shop there when they could just get a nexus S in the US from best buy for $99 and break the 2 yr contract early and only pay a $200 ETF plus a month of service ($30 voice plan) and $35 activation fee. (I happen to be from FL and live in Toronto lol)
I haven't been to pacific mall recently but I doubt you could find a brand new Nexus S there for under 600 cad. The prices I see for phones in those shops are always astronomically high when I compare it to US prices... or even local kijiji or craigslist ads.
Anyway, to the OP: the Nexus S doesn't have rogers/ATT 3G frequences, so it would only work on edge. Wait for the ATT version to be released and then reconsider. OR switch to wind and pay $40/mo for unlimited everything and stop burning money by being a rogers customer lol.
Thanks Dinan,
What is the wind mobile network specs? I do know that this was the first and last contract I ever sign with rogers again. I am at $50/month with no voicemail.
Thanks
Heeter
Well if you've never heard about Wind then you should probably check out their website. Their coverage is a lot less than what rogers offers, but if you live in a downtown core like Toronto or vancouver (or edmonton, I think they have service where you are) it's pretty good. They had a holiday miracle plan which was $40/month for unlimited voice nationwide (and even to the U.S.), unlimited 3G data, unlimited internationally, and voicemail. I think they have a plan which offers almost all of that (except U.S. calling) for $45/month.

you should not be buying the nexus s right now if you plan on using it with rogers. the nexus s will not work on rogers 3g network, so its pretty much a waste. you will be stuck on EDGE service which is slightly faster than dial up 56k.
the nexus s is supposed to be coming out with a rogers 3g version in a few weeks to a month, so really it would be wise to wait until the proper version is released.

It will likely be sold direct from Google unlocked, but with rogers 3g bands. So you prob won't be able to get it cheap on contract.
However strong rumors claim that rogers did plan on officially selling it, so who knows. We'll just have to wait and see. Should be very soon if It's going to happen.

[Q] Asia/Europe Version Sensation for T-zone / Web2go?

I'm wondering if anyone has used the non-tmobile version of sensation with t-mobile's T-zone / Web2go data plan. So here's the 2 questions:
1. Does the Asia/Europe version support AWS/1700MHZ 3G?
2. Does T-mobile block the Asia/Europe version's IMEI for T-zone / Web2go?
Much appreciated for your help!

1. All versions of the Sensation so far support the tmobile's AWS 3G band. Also, for those that don't know: AWS = 1700/2100. They put AWS because it's shorter than writing/explaining what it really is.

That wasn't the question though, was it?
He wants to know if T-Mobile US will allow an Asia/Europe Sensation to work with grandfathered T-Zones or web2go data plans. It has nothing to do with the bands. It has to do with T-Mobile's locking down of certain smartphones so that they can't use T-Zones or web2go regardless if they have AWS or not.
Since the phone's not out yet in the U.S., the majority of posters here are from the EU. They have no idea what T-Zones are. For my international friends, it's a legacy dumb-phone plan that allows you to use 3/4G data on an unlimited basis for half the price of the smartphone data plan. He's asking about the European IMEI because if T-Mobile U.S. has it in their database than T-Zones will be blocked.
OP, I'd ask again when more people in the U.S. actually have the phone.
P.S. - Since all the phones have AWS, I'd imagine that HTC provided T-Mobile U.S. with the full range of IEMIs. Just guessing but it makes sense.
Now does the international Sensation get slower speeds than the Sensation 4G? Or is it going to be the same?

should be the same. they're the same phone. only difference I've seen from pictures so far is the US version has 1 extra contact for the back antenna
also 2 things: why did you post this question in 4 different threads? & why do you care about the EU version if you're in the US. I'm pretty sure importing a EU version over to this side of the pond would be way more expensive than buying the US version outright.

Thank you all for your answers, but this is my first thread in XDA. Since this phone is made in China, I can import one from China for less than $600. Would be interesting to see if T-mobile blocks all the IMEIs. I got my dad a Huawei U8150, which is the same as the T-mobile Comet, but T-mobile has no idea what that phone is. So it works fine on the web2go plan. I almost pull the trigger to have my friend in China ship me a sensation, but I'll wait for a couple more weeks.
Because I can get the EU version easier than the US version and wanted to be sure before I placed an order.... that and I was a little drunk
Now last question s about the rom, will the EU be able to have the US rom flashed to it

I happen to work at Best Buy Mobile, and if you restore a stock rom and mess with around with a root explorer, you should be able to mess up the phone enough for them to exchange it with said PEP. The guys there don't EVER notice anything subtle, and I doubt you should have any problems
With it unlocked, will it get Rogers 3G? I'm assuming yes as HSPA+ bands are 850/1900 like Rogers.

So in other words, no information whatsoever. Lazy HTC listed quad band GSM but forgot to include the 3G bands in the specs.
We can probably assume it's UMTS 850/1900, possibly also 2100 for roaming. No AWS. The only Big 3 devices to include AWS have been the pentaband Nokias.

[Q] How to switch from Charge to GS2 next month

So I know there is a pool of people like me that recently purchased a Charge in order to get locked into an unlimited data plan. I assume there is also a smaller set of people, like me, who did this despite the fact they would have rather waited and purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2, but were forced into this decision because of the now enacted tiered data plans. With that being said and the recent news of the GS2 being released next month, I want to know if there is a way to switch from the Charge to the GS2, preferably without paying full retail for the phone (or adding a line). Any insight from current or former Big V employees or aggressive customers on how to go about this, if at all?

so odds are it ill just be tmo/att gsm versions followed by sprint, then vzw...hopefully the vzw one isnt the only 3g one

Well, this may not be any help to you, but it may help someone.
Best Buy Mobile is the only place that I know that still has a 30 Day exchange policy for Verizon. Unless the GS II comes out the first week of the month you would be out of luck. But you never know someone my be able to hustle one when it releases.
If you got it from costco you can return within ninety days

I have yet to see any news about the SGS2 on Verizon anytime soon. While it will hopefully be out in the next month or two, there are no guarantees.
My guess is that there will be a flood of used charges on craigslist when the gs2 releases.

With that being said and the recent news of the GS2 being released next month, I want to know if there is a way to switch from the Charge to the GS2, preferably without paying full retail for the phone (or adding a line). Any insight from current or former Big V employees or aggressive customers on how to go about this, if at all?

You do know you didn't have to buy a new phone to be grandfathered into unlimited data, right? As long as you don't downgrade to a feature phone, you could continue having unlimited data for as long as you're a Verizon customer and don't downgrade.

and you base this lack of lte knowledge on what?

I'm guessing he's basing that off of how thin it is.
I wonder if that new Verizon Samsung slider that's been wandering the interwebs lately is Verizon's SGS II...
I'm basing it off of not a single mention of LTE in the many many reviews online. We have leaked specs on the entire phone pretty much but not one place mentions LTE.
I haven't reviewed the specs of the gs2. Is it a dual core phone? Have you noticed all 4g lte phones are single core? What I was told by verizon is the lte connection somehow literally fries the current dual core processors thus resulting all the lte phones being single core and also why the droid bionic hasn't been released. To conclude my yapping is if the gs2 is a dual core phone then it's likely to be just for 3G.
Gremlins are watching you...
I bought my charge at costco hoping to either get a bionic or gs2 but I'm very happy with my charge even umrooted... I haven't had the need for a dual core cpu and when I do I want a snap dragon dual core. I
am good

I am a new customer coming over from Sprint. I was not satisfied with their service but stuck with them because they were more affordable and had unlimited everything. Preferred LTE over Wimax and made the switch a few days before the new tiered data plans. I could have gotten a reliable 3g phone for much cheaper, but I could not resist the LTE.

1. no one has reviewed (or seen) a VERIZON sgs2 yet which would be the only one capable of running lte atm
2. going by leaked roadmaps is pointless as some have said lte others not
3. we will have to wait and see, but that sammy slider WAS lte, and unlikely to be the sgs2...i think it ll be another refreshed sgs 1
Most likely the GS2 will be only 3g. Having tasted 4g on the Charge, I can't imagine going back to those slow speeds. However, I think it'll still be a top seller.

again, these 3g only guesses arent based on anything...lets wait and see
frankly though if it launches before oct the odds of 3g are greater...if its october+ i could see them marketing it as a big release

[Q]: Unlocking Infuse to access other networks?

I just moved to NC and get absolutely **** AT&T service. I hear Verizon works best in my area, so I'm wanting to switch to Verizon but not at the cost of buying a brand new phone when I have my beloved Infuse, and the deposit.
I actually have NOT rooted my Infuse because I liked the stock so much, saw no need to. I did have a rooted Galaxy S, as well as a rooted Nook, so I'm not a complete noob.
I'm just nervous about unlocking my phone to possibly hook it up with Verizon. Can you tell me how this works? After unlocking are you sure it'll be 100% to use with Verizon?
Anything else I need to know? How's your mother doing?
I don't think the infuse will work with Verizon. Verizon uses cdma and infuse is a gsm phone. How's tmobile over there? It'll work but with slow data speeds.

Ugh, eff. This is going to suck. Tmobile is shiz, too. I was really hoping to avoid having to spend $200+ plus whatever security deposit requirements. I've been with AT&T over 5 years.
Grr.
Idk infuse maybe compatible with cdma, I've seen the option to use it in a special menu somewhere, its regularly set for cdma/gsm so it maybe able to use Verizon but I'm no developer so I'm not to sure

Plus isn't T-Mobile at&t anyway. Don't they use the same towers? I thought I heard at&t bought t-mobile

You could try switching to Credo, which uses sprint's towers and you wouldn't lose any money.
They will buy out your at&t contract if you switch to them, so you don't have to pay at&t early termination fees. If you sign their contract, you can also get the sprint sgs2 For $200 and just sell your infuse to cover that cost. So you would have to drop some money at first but get it all back.
I've been considering doing this because Credo spends their money on things like lobbying against sopa/pipa, whereas at&t is really into censoring the uses of our phones.
Edit:

If service sucks in your house, look into getting a used Microcell from Ebay or Craigslist. On principle I hate the fact I have to use my own broadband connection, buy my own device, and still have my minutes and data usage count against my monthly alottment but that's the way AT&T plays. If it's the entire area you are in then maybe a carrier change is in order.
The Samsung Infuse is a GSM phone. It does not have the capability to connect to CDMA networks (Verizon, Sprint, and any of the MVNOs using Sprint or Verizon's network).
If unlocked, you can use any SIM from another GSM carrier and make voice calls. You will also be able to use Edge (2G) data coverage from any GSM carrier.
In the US, the two largest GSM carriers are AT&T and T-Mobile. They use different 3G frequencies which means using a phone originally for AT&T on T-Mobile only allows you 2G data speeds and vice versa (in general... though some T-Mobile smartphones can use AT&T's 1900Mhz band)
Hope that helps. Unlike Europe and Asia, our phones are by and large locked to their respective carriers even if you unlock them because of the technology difference and frequency differences.
