Ok so I got my XT1080 few days or whatever and it had the first 4.4 ota, you know the one with the transparent status bar but still that blue jelly bean hue on the status bar etc.... So not thinking of it I just decided to see if there was another ota and there was so I got it and now I want root.... Here's what I want to know please.. Without telling me to go read 30 pages on another post can someone just tell me
Is there root for me
If so do I have to have boot loader unlocked, I've had phones with locked boot loaders and still flashed Roms
Can I flash Roms on this device with a locked boot loader via twrp
I mainly read that you have to downgrade to a certain version use jcase method it something? I got lost in that bounty post..
Yes there is!
Note
This little guide assumes you know how to install adb and use basic command-line tools.
First, flash your phone back to a older version with rsdlite. (instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53141176&postcount=6)
Second, use jcase's pie exploit. (instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...-x-pie-motorola-devices-t2771623/post53128101)
Third, use motowpnomo, but executing "adb shell /data/local/atvc/root.sh" in a separate cmd window every time the device reboots (instructions for motowpnomo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/orig-development/kill-write-protection-motowpnomo-t2551113 as for the command, just spam it till it goes through)
Forth, install your superuser application (and safestrap if you want custom rom functionality)
Fifth, profit!
Note that you do have read/write access to system and root access, but still a locked bootloader.

Wow I love you!
alright my inner noob is going crazy. i see a zillion threads on how you need to roll back to 4.2.2 rom. my question is do i need to roll back if im on 4.4 stock?
i must have downloaded every tool and rom needed by this point. a step by step would be awesome. lots of tutorials available but im seeing they are mostly off of the x which i do understand is practically a sibling to the ultra and maxx.
any info or step by step would be awesome. lastly if i dont need to roll back to an earlier version that would be super. thanks!!!

19.5.3 it should be made known i plan on using the phone with t-mobile and the outside hope that i can have a fully functional phone with lte...
Well that makes things more difficult, TMobile has an LTE to Voice/text handoff issue present in 19.5.3 and 19.6.3. I hear its corrected in 4.4.4. Do you have an unlocked boot loader?

Boot loader is not unlocked. However if I do the update I won't be able to get root. Correct?
Correct. You are on the correct version to begin root. With Jcase's pie and run wp off. You can keep that when you update to 19.6.3 however when you update to 4.4.4 youll lose root (unless you preserve it) but you definitely lose wp off

You don't need to downgrade of you are on 19.5.3. You just need to run motopie then motowpnomo.
You can't unlock the bootloader unless you have a code or a developer edition.
No recovery or rom needed.
Root-wp off- Root survival mode in supersu- update to 19.6.3 then stay there unless you want to update to 4.4.4 to address the tmobile lte issue
Then the sequence would be Root-wp off- Supersu survival-update to 19.6.3- supersu survival-update 4.4.4

I had been reading up on the Dirty Cow exploit/root method, and it seemed to be compatible with all Android devices, so I took a little chance with my v10, and it worked perfectly! I was on the stock unrooted 20l update, and followed all the steps here: https://github.com/jcadduono/android_external_dirtycow#running
Notes:
-I put our TWRP image and SuperSu zip on the root of my sdcard
-For the very last command, replace 'twrp.img' with the name of your TWRP image file(or change the name of your TWRP fiile to twrp.img ).
-Like it says in the instructions, the phone did look like maybe it bricked at one point, with a strange backlighting on the Tmobile boot screen. It worked out tho!
-My boot loader was unlocked prior to doing these steps

Great job. You know technically these same instructions should work for ANY of the v10 variants ..verizon...at&t etc....including the ones that up till now didn't have root at all.
Thanks. Doesn't it require an unlocked boot loader tho, or no?

Yes but for example verizon's comes with an unlocked bootloader...they just only had root for the 5.x rom's and none for the 6.0.

No, it means it's unlockable, but you have to actively unlock it. There should be a thread here somewhere if you haven't done that yet, but it's just boot into bootloader and then 'fastboot oem unlock'
Edit: in case you need it there are great instructions in the v20 thread that I linked in the first post.

The cow method means copy on write...
This means as anything is written it is copied (or flashed or burned; whatever you want to call your desired definition)
You could in theory copy dummy files to a temp location and actually write to a permanent location...
Or am I thinking wrong about it?
If this is a viable option to ALL phones I don't think Google or manufactures could (or would for that matter) actually patch this kind of exploit as it would be super time consuming.
just confirming that Root 20l w/Dirty Cow does work.
Finally got my replacement V10 back, and all is a go again. Stock rooted,
Not sure the novice should try this, as its pretty nerve racking. If you follow the directions correctly it does work great.
Surprised they have closed this backdoor yet,
thanks for being the first to try this on a V10.

I think it's considered a very serious vulnerability that must and will be patched soon. They can't have root access so easily obtained on any device.

You're welcome, and thanks for confirming. That one step where the screen goes weirdly backlit with the Tmo splash screen is a bit nerve-wracking, and so is writing recovery this way, but I was comforted by the fact that you can just tell it to to write to the recovery partition rather than having to know the more technical name/location(not sure if this was possible a few years back?)
Anyway, if I did brick I was gonna go straight to the store and buy a ZTE Zmax Pro for $180 haha.
Which reminds me, does anyone know if there is a way to simply push su into /system once you have the root shell, instead of writing recovery to flash SuperSu? Just curious. I sorta wanted to do that but then I just went with TWRP.

No. The shell has limited access...it has just enough permissions to write recovery and access some things on boot...you need to get it a recovery where you can then flash a zip to install superuser.
Thanks so much for this info, I was actually about to post a new thread to see if root for 20L had been achieved.
But a few questions:
Is there a KDZ/TOT available for 20L? Or is it delivered in update.zip format via OTA?
Is there a way to root 20L without touching system partition? Like, you know, systemless root? I was thinking that maybe it might be possible to flash Magisk from TWRP then install systemless phh Superuser or (less preferable for me) SuperSU. This way I can still take the official Nougat OTA when it hits, without losing root. But the catch is, TWRP needs to be accessible first.
Well, time to sleep for now, it's been a long 3 days, subsisting on Monster and cigs. I'll tackle this when I eventually wake up.
Like the last guy, I've got a million questions on this. I need to find the changelog on 20L to begin with, because if they didn't fix the VoLTE silence on calling, then it's useless to me. I wonder where the OP was with his existing V10.. because I'm currently on 20J rooted with twrp. Seems with the instructions posted, I would have to use LG bridge to go back to 100% stock, then upgrade to 20L then hope this works. Again, the radios are probably modified so there's probably some kind of anti-rollback involved as well.
Great post though! Great work discovering this! Definitely in the right direction!

The Volte silence bug is fixed in 20l, as many have reported. I had updated officially to 20l and was stock unrooted prior to this. But for people who are rooted on 20j or earlier, I believe Eliminator has released a pre-rooted update, so maybe you'd wanna do that instead.

So I just purchased the Honor 8 and I have been trying to root it because I'm not a fan of the lack of options that were available on my Nexus 6p. However everything I have tried with adb, twrp, kingroot and nothing works. I'm not that advanced with root knowledge (yes I still want to root). To be honest I'm at the point where I would pay someone to chat online with step by step instructions during the rooting process! I'm just so frustrated.

A little more information would help, what model are you on (FRD/ Al??), which firmware.
Essentially though, update device via OTA, unlock bootloader, flash TWRP via adb then root( flash SuperSU via TWRP).
There are several guides for all these steps available.
It is however essential that you use the proper TWRP and SuperSU found in the development section.
Unfortunately there is no root method for locked bootloaders
Guide :fingers-crossed:

I do have experience flashing phones. I don't need help with adb and fastboot.
I am just confused at to what exactly TWRP is? Is that the recovery? What should I flash to my phone?
Either way, I just want to root my phone and install a custom rom to it...but I don't see many or any custom roms except for TWRP...so really just want root above all else
Please tell me what I need to do and in what order...lol.....thank you

TWRP is custom recovery. It's still in beta.
As far as I know, there are no custom roms. 8.1 is too new and they are still working on things.
Root with Magisk. Plenty of how to threads.

TWRP actually just came out of beta with 12/12 Walleye(12/14 Taimen) build, hopefully there will be some custom roms soon... You can use the Skipsoft Android toolkit to root, unlock, flash twrp etc. Or do it manually following guides here on XDA under development section https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/development, ADB has been updated so make sure to have the latest platform tools.
Currently theres no custom ROMs at all for Pixel 2.
TWRP is a recovery.
Rooting is pretty straight-forward I studied these 2 articles/thread:
http://highonandroid.com/android-smartphones/how-to-root-pixel-2-or-pixel-2-xl-easiest-method/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/guide-unlock-flash-root-pixel-2-walleye-t3702417
The kind of confusing part is when you want to change custom kernels and update TWRP.
As the recovery, kernel and root stuff all play around in the same partition now.
Read around the forum, since you got experience you will figure it out.

I used the Skipsoft package, which does all the things. Couple snags, it only wanted to accept the beta of magisk.
I'm thinking I got it all right now. I will report back if I find a problem

Pretty sure that is the same for everyone according to the reading I've done. I'm looking to do the same with mine. What method did you use? Any snags?

So rooting your Pixel 2 will invariably trigger this error message on boot, for any user?
Are there other undesirable side effects to rooting your Pixel 2 at the moment?
Thanks
While i am no beginner when it comes to modding phones, having done so with Samsungs Sonys and my last HTC 10. But this is my first Oneplus and my first time dipping toes in the world of A/B partitions as well. My device is a 1910 GM21AA. While i have gone through the guides regarding bootloader unlocks and magisk rooting, I have failed to grasp some more basic aspects. For one thing, i seem to have the Chinese variant but mine isnt Hydrogen OS, i am currently sitting on 9.5.3 OOS. I was wondering how i could perhaps shift to the Global firmware. Am i to take the latest 9.5.11 OTA from https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...7-pro-global-repo-oxygen-os-t3930585#poststop and simply put it in the download folder and do a local update from the system update on the phone? Thanks in advance
Use the oygen os updater from the play store download full rom which is around 2gb and do local upgrade.
FYI GM21AA is Indian Version

the packages shown in the app seem to be the same zips in the thread i linked...so all i do is take the GM21AA from the thread and just do a local update? I read that 1910 is the Chinese variant for my device but it has this GM21AA build which just made things so confusing. Thank you.
I would now like to know of things i can do to bring my OP7Pro to life in case something ever goes wrong with Local storage updates or just Fcked up in general

That should do.. it should give you an error if the update is incompatible. Incase you mess up you can always fastboot and update using this thread https://www.google.co.in/amp/s/foru...ock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424/amp/

After flashing the rom, i cant for some reason enter engineering mode. I could with my original firmware. Has this happened to you or anyone?

I could be wrong, but I think that's the norm with everyone since updating. Thinkni read it in one of the XDA forums around here somewhere.
How do i roll back to full stock if i am on custom rom? This is unfortunately also my first time dealing with A/B partitions.
Aside from these, i have been going around the forums and had a few more questions that i hope someone could help me with....
1. Whenever i come across a rom not based on OOS, i keep coming across never wiping system or vendor, why is that?
2. I come across flashing OOS a lot, how do i flash OOS when i am in a custom rom not based on OOS?

look in the volte thread
there is an apk to installnand enables it again with limited functionality
or use MSM tool to go back to 953 and tibu backup and restore on 9511
oneplus removed it for some reason...
maybe because they found out we're forcing VOLTE?

Do i use MSM tool or fastboot method whenever i need to get back to complete stock without any root or twrp? If so then i think MSM tool or fastboot roms would be a great way to go. 1 question, does using msm or fastboot return the phone to stock while keeping the bootloader unlocked? Also, is it ok to downgrade to a lower version of OOS with MSM or fastboot roms? i think 9.5.11 for me introduced some random background battery drain and this weird mobile data bug where switching to it doesnt enable the connection until much much later
I personally use fastboot. All you need to do is plug the phone in>Boot to fastboot (hold vol up and down and power all at once)>On the computer launch flashall.bat (dont run it as administrator, just launch it).

Do you use it to downgrade or whenever you need to go back to full stock after modding? does it keep the bootloader unlocked or does it relock it? Thanks. Sorry for the noob questions. This is my first Oneplus. I have kept my device stock until i get a good idea of how to deal with things going south.
I need a little guidance regarding this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/guide-mega-unbrick-guide-hard-bricked-t3934659
Are these rom packages for MSMtool or fastboot packages?
EDIT:
Never mind...msmtool stuff just went through the files
