Less than a year and they are talking of Cutting models?!
Nearing, not at, so who knows how long that will drag on.
They must have something coming up their sleeves, we'll see what happens.
Whatever it is, i'm with this device for a while to come. I got some nuts to crack with development for it, and i've picked this one to stop and learn all the ins-and-outs of Android on.
The Achilles heel of this device is the lack of internal storage, (battery aside) to me it's where the ball got dropped on this one. With the 16/32 gig internal available on releasing models, that's a significant difference, and probably skews the playing field a bit.
Speaking of field, the near field technology deal is another thing that's being released that T-Mo might be trying to get devices with and capitalize on. Since Verizon dropped the ball by putting a blockage between the tech and Google Wallet (which, really, is what makes it work for point of sale payments) I can see other carriers trying to get in on it like Sprint did to distinguish themselves from #1 by offering a service they don't.
Dunno, it's really all speculation at this point in the game, but i'm with this one for the long haul. The longer I stick with this one, the quicker/easier it'll be to transition to another and i'll probably be able to pull my ROMs forward to whatever the next good hardware keyboard device is.
(really, after learning all the shortcut keys for the hardware buttons, how could you not have that?? It's like trying to type on a real computer wearing mittens without them.)
This makes me mad, but really, we don't know what exactly this means. I wish more people would have realized what an awesome phone this is.
wth? this makes no sense at all... i could see them discontinuing silders (although not liking the idea) but seeing sensation amaze and the mid/low end LG models too makes me wonder.
perhaps they are the least popular ones? sounds kinda weird tho
Yeah, sensation was/is very popular.... Amaze literally just came out. it's a beast... Dub tee eff
Just my spare change.

Have you read up on mtd any? Something I was noticing as well, although its not like I've gone anywhere near limits of this device... And I'm with u unless they drop a 5" keyboard device... Like a samsung epic note.... Would switch back to samsunk then.

mtd?
Could you expand on that a bit? I skipped sleep yet again, last night, and it's just not clicking right now.
I spent the last couple of hours browsing over the forums here in our little corner of XDA. I didn't really have the head to get any work done, and so much has happened that i've missed recently. Taking a few hours to just browse around and read this or that and catch up a little bit has been helpful.
There was a time not too long ago where i'd read every post in the MT4GS forums, most multiple times. Just a few weeks float by and now there's so much I have to catch up on, there are still a few topics I need to spend some time wrapping my head around.
I'd love to spend a day just reading up on and playing with MR. Root, the download mode thread, and the various Hboot threads to just soak them all in together and see where I could help out. Then i'd love to build on that by taking a good long look at the string of OTA updates and see what it'll take to crack the latest un-rootable roadblock we got tossed. Maybe pick up something along the way to add to it all.
I dunno, at the moment sleep deprived and just a tad overwhelmed by the amount of information here I haven't had the chance to soak in yet, and all the stuff i'm trying to roll out for my ROM - and i've got a lot of threads that are getting out of date that need to be brought current, added to and finished.
This little floating session has kinda given me a good handle on what I need to do to make progress in all the aforementioned areas though, so when I sit down I can just get started instead of trying to figure out what i'm doing.
Kinda useless right this very moment, but that's okay because I got 11 minutes before I have to walk out the door. I'll turn all this over in my head during the day, and hit the ground running when I get to steal some time tonight.
Meantime, what's mtd? lmao

Agreed.
The problem is, at least in my opinion, high end devices with QWERTY keyboards are really rare. If you look at TMob's lineup, they've got the Sidekick 4G, the Cliq2, the gravity smart, the MTQ, and the MT4GS. Only the 4GS is really a high end device, with the rest either being mid-tier, or really crappy.
What's really sad is that the only other carrier who seems to have a decent variety of QWERTY androids is Verizon. Sprint and AT&T don't seem that interested (although AT&T has the captivate glide (which is about the level of the Cliq2, IMO), and I think the general perception is that QWERTY devices are for entry level texters.
I didn't meant to go off on a tangent, but I think the MT4GS, discontinued or not, is going to be the only option for QWERTY lovers for a while. I am hoping we see a MT5GS after a while, but the fact that LG seems to be making MT devices concerns me. Maybe the MT4GS was the last hurrah of the line.
I can see them getting chopped up and divided amongst the other carriers. Maybe they're getting ready for that?

MTD as i remember it from the G1 and the MT3GS is the ability to grow and shrink partitions. Using a flashable .zip and a .txt file on the Sdcard, for example, we were able to grow the data partition at the cost of cache and system (good if we were using an AOSP rom like Cyanogenmod).

Nah, not really - and intentionally so actually. In my quest to make Bulletproof be as stable as possible this is something that would throw a monkey wrench in my work at this time.
In the future it's on the list, because i'm ending up with internal space that is essentially wasted, and this probably the best way to reclaim that and make it usable.
I'm a little jealous of all the knowledge most of you have from having Android phones before - stuff like this you just know about, whereas i'd have to actively look for it unless someone mentions it off-hand, and it's hard to look for things you don't know exist.
That only means they're going to stop selling it. Look at the G2. They declared its end of life eight months after it first went on the market.

mt4gs is just a plain good phone with its camera and dual core. Its still sized as a phone should be in my book. We have true ICS working, sense ics working, and a good heap of feature complete GB roms as well... So if they dont produce something unprecedented in the mobile camera business in the following year, its a keeper anyway... i even ordered it from here europe to enjoy this amazing phone. I say get while you still can...lol
i think i figured out why t-mobile would want to do this.
the chances are that new phones with S4 snapdragons are around the corner (MWC) and with them being 28nm SoCs the battery life will be dramatically improved, which to be fair is the real downside of current phones...
still, it's very very sad to see a phone discontinued after just few months
Looks like the rumors of the mT4GS' demise were exaggerated. Looks like it was a fat finger error. There is still life for this great phone. Nothing to see here move along.

MTD is an acronym for Memory Technology Device. It describes the CLASS OF STORAGE NAND hardware, and the driver infrastructure in the Linux kernel that was responsible for managing it.
Those scripts that you remember using were manipulating the default kernel command line, in order to feed a customized PARTITION TABLE into the MTD DRIVER, rather than the "fixed" one stored within the hardware's SPL.
This does not apply to Doubleshot, since Doubleshot uses an eMMC instead, though there may be similar approaches to feeding the eMMC driver a custom partition table.

Don't most of those 16/32 GB internal storage devices LACK an sdcard slot? If so, then Doubleshot has a potential for up to 34 GB storage, which is 2 GB more than a 32 GB device...
I want to ask, I've been planning to buy N5 for quite some time. For people who own the device for quite some time now, how is it fairing especially after 4.4.2 update? Thanks for your insights.

You're going to get a different answer from everyone who responds. I'm really happy with it for the most part, except that Google + and Chrome will randomly start running really aggressively in the background and killing my battery. It doesn't happen often, and a reboot seems to fix it, but it's definitely a problem I've noticed.

Yeah, at least get a birds' eye view of owners who has experience. Did your problem occur after 4.4.2 update? and is it on a custom rom? I don't wanna venture into another fiasco wherein I didn't do my research properly and get a lot of problems with the phone. At least getting some insights from other people will solidify my stand whether or not I will get it.

I've only noticed it since the 4.4.2 update, and I'm just running stock rooted. Maybe it's just me though because I haven't seen anyone else mention this specific issue. In any case, it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the phone. It's still the best device I've ever owned.
I personally think 4.4.2 ruined the battery
Team Nexus 5 sucks
^really bad? Like S3 rooted battery problem bad?
Never owned an s3 but this battery life is bad because I rely on it in my business. I literally have to carry a backup phone since the nexus 5 's battery is non removable
Team Nexus 5 sucks
They'll release a fix soon though, this problem won't be overlooked by Google by the looks of it. A lot of people are complaining on Product forums at Google.
They will but it's taking so long. I've had problems with this phone since early November
Yeah, can I get away with it by NOT installing 4.4.2 and just install 4.4.1? since 4.4.2 has problems?
I think you'll find the majority of users are happy with their N5s. I find the phone to be a superb device. I'm stock unrooted 4.4.2 and have no issues whatsoever. Battery life is perfectly acceptable, I regularly go 2 days with 3½ hours SOT a charge, obviously more SOT if using the device more heavily in a shorter time frame.
If you read available threads you should be able to find all the info you want, and you'll see dicecuber is always complaining about how the N5 sucks and how much better Galaxy devices are. Most of us still can't figure out why he kept the N5.

Great phone, well worth the $350. No lag whatsoever and just buttery smooth. If u like pure android without laggy touch wiz or sense, then this is the phone for u. Camera is very decent, not the best but very acceptable. Battery life seems a little worse on 4.4.2 but still able to get a days use out of it. I have a screenshot of my n5 going 5 days and 6 hrs off the charger, with light usage of course.
Overall its a great phone. For that price, it can't be beat.

Half the fun of owning a phone these days is complaining about short battery life on xda. The other half is trying to fix it. You can install all sorts of utility apps, flash custom roms and kernels, tweak this and that, and then go on one of the dedicated threads and talk all about it. It becomes like a hobby.
That being said, I agree that there will be better battery life on the next KitKat. In the meantime, get an N5 and join in the fun! The phone is awesome.

That's a perfect fix if you don't use either of those apps. If you do, not so much. I'm looking into options to ditch Chrome, and after finding Dolphin to be really fast but crash-tastic as ever, Firefox seems to be working out pretty well. It might be a decent Chrome replacement.
As far as Google+, I'd rather not disable it because I use the Photos app quite a bit. If worse comes to worse, I might have to do it though.

Hi. After months of searching and no luck I finally found what caused my battery drain. I had strong overheating near the camera so I decided to search a bit on that. Turned out MicroSD problem. I had ~20.000 files on it (and search indexing was doing all this crap). People reported overheating gone after removing the SD. I deleted the files and voila - no more overheating and drain for me. Its back to the normal battery life when I bought it. It used to drain 5% every 10 minutes before. Many of you probably know this but I thought it may help someone.
Hmm.. What size sd did you have installed? What's your rig? What manufacturer, sd?
I have experienced the over heating as well.. Right underneath the camera lens. And yes, more noticeable when playing games.. (that possibly have data stored on sd)
Note 3, rooted, stock ROM
Galaxy gear 1, rooted, null_rom, stock launcher
.werd.
Yes, that happens. It's been mentioned in the quite numerous battery threads around here repeatedly.
- You may have one or more corrupt files. Hook the card up to a computer (via a cardreader or slot) and do a global search for 0kb files on it. Delete all 0kb media files (ignore the playlists and .nomedia.)
- Drop a .nomedia file in every folder you don't need to see in your gallery, Stock video or Stock musicplayer. This tells mediascanner to skip that folder. It applies to all subfolders as well, so dropping one in your ebook folder is enough to exclude all folders within that folder. (so anything containing stored maps, documents, textfiles, apks, appfiles (you can safely srop one in the Android folder, if Android hasn't already done so.), books, etc canbe safely excluded. If you find you need the folder shown somewhere after all, just delete the file.)
You can copy the ones already existing in several folders on the phone (Android creates them.). May need to enable hidden files first.
For instance, I have one folder containing a total of 24.238 files in 1.439 folders. These are all saved websites for documentation when I don't have internet access. Before I dropped a .nomedia file in my 'Websites' folder, my battery drained within a mere few hours, and the phone always ran hot. Dropped a .nomedia file in there, problem solved. Indexingservice skips the folder entirely, and I can access it via the filemanager (ES in my case, but stock works too.)
The Stock players rely on the Indexingservice. If you use an alternative music player, you can also add one to your music library. (Keep in mind this might disable the album arts. On N7 it works fine, haven't tested the rest.) Quickpic can be set to show folders hidden by a .nomedia file.
Videoplayers use Indexingservice, so adding a .nomedia file to the video folders excludes them from the videoplayers. You can still launch the video from your filemanager though. No issue there.
Oh, and ringtones, alarms and notifications require indexingservice, so don't add a nomedia file there.
worked for me

Helped me, so I thank you. Almost pulled my hair out, battery was halved for a few months and tried numerous things to rectify to no avail.Pulled memory card out last night, and I just got ten percent drain with screen constantly on for an hour straight!
Oh well, don't try calling Samsung support for a new battery. They had me waiting for 3 weeks when they told me they'd send one out, only when I rang them the fifth time a manager said that's not what they do and told me he would do nothing to rectify their mistake while being a complete a$$ to me.
Cheers for the heads up anyway buddy, appreciate it :good::good:

There's plenty of advantages. And just like everything with Android, it needs proper managing. If you want a use-and-don't-think phone, buy an iPhone.
A large point is that I actually have something to watch and listen to and read during my 7.5 hour daily commute of which 5 hours are a zone where I have no mobile signal whatsoever (or G, if I'm very lucky.) Renders a cloud or streaming service rather useless, wouldn't you say? And I shall not even bother to explain to you the concept of borders and roaming charges.
Not to mention that if my phone dies, at least all my personal data is safely stored where I can get to it.
I've listed exactly what to do to prevent this issue in my post a few posts up. It's a simply copy-paste approach that takes about a minute in total.
Or do you complain about the pointlessness of TV's, too? Seeing as how you need to spend a minute connecting it and selecting the proper channels upon purchase....
My brand was Samsung 32GB, I believe Class 6 or 8. Rom always stock and rooted. I always ignored the fact that it may be SD problem. I'm so relieved this problem is gone. Strong overheating where I can't touch it was existing almost every time even on simple youtube videos watching. I never had this issue with my previous devices. Just try unplugging the SD card for few days and drain/charge battery and see for yourself. If it works then great.

Relax. No need to shout and cry. Don't be insecure about your phone. Did you see me talking about iPhone? Or have you ever seen an iPhone user firing at another iPhone user and asking him to go-buy-an-android if he needs clarification about anything? No. They ain't that insecure like many of the android users we have. Case in point, as seen above.
Moreover, I cannot comment on your TV comment since I don't watch TV much. I prefer YouTubing
yes this is true...I had been facing this issue since the days of Galaxy S2, only solution is to not use the sdcard...formatting the card works but only for a few days, or until the time you start filling it up...creating a .nomedia file in every directory doesn't seem to work for me!
anybody else got it to work?

I'm not quite sure how you got insecure from that.... I own 5 smartphones, I happily use my Note 3 without a shred of doubt every day. And if I was insecure about Android/Samsung, I wouldn't be working for them to help others fix and get the most out of their device.
(Also, maybe men feel the need to be insecure about something they own and see as a reflection of themselves (it seems to be a reoccuring theme with that gender), but I'm not a bloke. I don't see my phone as the metaphorical representation of a phallus I do not have.)
Kindly stop projecting your own feelings onto my comments.

No, it won't. The Media Scanner is Android, Not Touchwiz.
You need to tell it where not to search. It's that simple.
Hi all,
I too have spent weeks looking for a solution.
I froze Sfinder with Titanium and now my Galaxy is OK!
I initially bought this tablet early 2015 (or late 2014, can't really remember). I had watched many videos and read many reviews that agreed with its 'ultimate tablet for gamers' branding. When it is loaded up inside a game the Tegra K1 really shines, and it delivers amazing gaming performance. Outside of games, for me anyway it is ridiculously slow. I have had this issue since day one on android 4.x.x. I patiently waited for updates hoping they would fix my problems but they never did. Many months of waiting and 2 full android releases later, I have decided to post. This tablet =, when it feels like it is a very snappy device. However 99% of the time it doesn't 'feel like it'. often just turning on the display when the device is locked takes multiple attempts and takes a good 10-15 seconds. Then I have to wait for the home screen to load in. First the status bar and wall paper. Then the Icons pop up a few seconds later. For the first few seconds navigating the home screen is near impossible with it lagging so much. It speeds up after a random amount of time. Then for example I go to open chrome. It once again slows right down and it takes a good 20 seconds for chrome to fully load. Then when I try to type something the keyboard lags. (Much in the same way as my iPhone 4s on iOS 9). It sometimes speeds back up but it is never 'fast'. Youtube is a strange one. Often it works fine other times even 480p video skips and lags. My internet is 150MBPS so it isn't that (And i can watch 4k youtube on my PC just fine). Sometimes the device just straight refuses to do anything and the only option is a hard reset. I have had two tablets now (Recall) and both behave the exact same way. That makes me think it must be much more widespread than just me. I have tried everything. Reflashing, Custom ROMS, flashing older versions. Does anyone have anything that may help me. Im half considering dumping the thing and picking up a second hand iPad which ideally I don't want to do. Anyway, sorry for the long post and thank you in advance.
This behaviour is not normal.

Same experience over here. The Wi-Fi sucks no matter what. A custom Rom help stop the bleeding, but w/ everyday tasks it's pathetic. How that's possible is beyond me, but honestly I thought my Nexus 7 2013 was, and still is faster. This tablet is a big let down to me, so I'm looking for a replacement as well. Waiting to see if Sammy is going to release anything soon before I go down iPad mini route...

Where did you guys buy your tablet?
My Shield is ultra fast. WiFi rocks. No performance issues. Consider switching off **app optimization** for it's total bollocks.

Yes, I've heard about MM, which is rather a downgrade in terms of performance. Thus I stick with Lollipop.
I'm not an expert but you certainly can change back to Lollipop. All you'd need is an image of stock lollipop and some tools.
XDA should have all the tools.
I know exactly how you feel, so I did some research and wrote a script, basically journaling is ****ing over our ndevices so hard, I turned it off and its like a whole new device. used to score like 93k in antutu and after disabling journaling, 102k easily

Is there any place where 1. I can learn about making a script or 2. Download a script?

What is **disabling journaling**?
Just got the K1 (brand new) and it came with 6.0.1 installed - only the July security update was pending installation.
All setup and running super quick...
Not sure what's up with yours?
I did read when upgrading from LP to MM you should do a Factory Reset after else it lags like hell. Tried that?
Also - as with all Android new installs - don't "restore settings" when setting up. It seems to slow the device down massively. Had the same issue with my Nexus 5x. Setup as brand new, no importing, and it flies.
Because its crap? These Nvidia CPU's are pants compared to Qualcomm. They overheat without you actually doing anything with them, stall regularly just because you dared to lift up the device, and generally run slow. Benchmarks may suggest otherwise, but benchmarks are real life usage.

The thing is I've used tablets such as the Xiaomi Mi Pad (also with the tegra K1) and some of the Tegra Note tablets with no issues whatsoever. The Shield Tablet is the only tegra-powered device I have ever had issues with

My shield tablet is terribly slow, works OK for a while but slows to a crawl. Memory management seems to be non existent. I'm on MM but was same on Jb and LL

What apps have you running?
Is there a SD card inside? Slow SD cards do slowdown the tab!
I have done what seems like everything to save this dream2lte (it is an Exenyos from Mexico). The compass literally can't sit still and I have a low number of satellite locks on the GPS.
My amateur brain thinks maybe, just maybe it has something to do with outdated GPS models (old modem or bootloader ... Though I updated and I think I used the correct files to Sept 2022 in Odin for both extracted from stock.)
After that I really have no idea if CSC settings can play a role, if I monkeyed around there a long time back... I am also trying to use this Mexican model in Canada west coast..
Any pros out there know how to get some closure on this long running droid companion. Because otherwise the phone is more than I need. A broken compass or at least one I can't use is starting to become a deal breaker.. Lol
Yes, don't bother. Start checking other phones, why holding yourself back with a half-ishly working device.
Fun fact: Had so many devices that I kept and waited for to improve/repair. Never happened, NEVER. They only lost in value... and that's totally not worth it.

Yeah, exactly that happened to me - see it as a win for yourself: less trouble, peace of mind
PS: Truth to be told, just last month I found a box with 3 nokias, 2 sorta ok-ish, one disassembled... just tired of such space hoggers *sigh*
