I'm giving the Pixel 3a serious thought. I'm wondering about the available storage. Can someone tell me how storage space is available on first boot, before installing anything?

1.1gb is taken for system.
15gb is taken for system apps.
However everyone believes this is an error and should say 16gb for system instead of apps.

Just noticed its been corrected in the update. Now says 11gb for system.

available storage space is 50gb, on both P and Q.
After I have installed all my personal apps I use I have 42 GB of free space left. Together with cloud space it is more than enough for me.
Thanks for the answers. Looks like I'll be headed to Bestbuy soon.

On my quest for finding the best for my beloved nexus 5, I found that in the nexus 7 you could disable journaling to improve speed but I can't find anything for the nexus 5 on how to disable journaling so here is the part where the heroes of the xda forum bravely fix my "problem".
edit:
Nexus 7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280496
Ext2 has no journalling and thusly was quicker than ext3, but journalling adds much more data integrity so would always recommend sticking with ext3 over ext2
However, we use ext4 which is quick and journals.
Not sure how n7 did it but I really wouldn't recommend it. Its not really "safe".

added the link of the nexus 7 thread.
I realize we lose safety but alot of ppl are saying that that feature is more for servers and that the normal consumer won't be needing it.
I'll have a look at the link.
I can confirm I have had huge issues with data loss and even bootloops due to lack of journalling so do beware

Looks pretty easy to achieve. There's no point removing it from /system as you're not writing data here. I don't know about /cache but I don't see any harm.
/data would benefit the most but is the most risky
Did you read last page of that thread?

Looks to me that all you'd have to do is change /sdhci-tegra.3 to be /msm_sdcc.1 and:
UDA to userdata
APP to system
CAC to cache
But don't quote me on that! (Meaning don't try that on my say so)

Don't forget you'll be using tune2fs packaged in recovery partition as /system is unmounted.

Does anyone know what's the expandable storage limit on the 16GB version?
Some specs shows 32GB and other 64GB, so I am really confused.

Is this device rooted? I can provide possible fixes if you have root and less successful ones for non-root.

That being said, the non-root procedure would be to try to force stop all Google services. Also, try clearing data on them. Check if the play store has updates for them.

Hi TechGuyAnthony yes it is rooted
Ok. That makes things a bit easier. You could try and get a gapps package like one from
http://opengapps.org
Though you can get one anywhere. I can kinda tell that your home screen is pretty new so I'd think out of the architecture options you have it might be Arm64. But I'd make sure with CPU-Z or something like that.
Once downloaded place on either internal or external storage. Reboot into recovery (custom recovery needed such as, TWRP, CWM, etc) and install the package. As far as I know this is a google apps issue but if it still doesn't work then you are gonna need to factory reset or something.

Stock comes with every google app that is usually shipped with Samsung devices. You can choose that if you want but if you really want to squeeze a little extra storage into your phone then go with Mini

hi i've just followed your above mentioned method but unfortunately i'm still having same issue. I think the only option left for me is to do factory reset

Ya. Either that or get a diff. Custom ROM. It appears the ROM you are using might be broken. Maybe get Cyanogenmod. Lots of cool features and all that stuff.

Finally after so many attempts i was able to figure it out what was causing my settings to crash whenever i clicked on the Google icon. The main culprit was Google settings app which i happen to click mistaking it for settings app. Went to google settings app's app info which took me to google play services. Cleared its cache and data. Now its working fine. I have also hidden that nasty app so that i dont click it by accident again. ?. Gosh i'll always remain a noob ?

Hi there members of XDA,
I have autism and get very angry at technology when it freezes up for minutes and just wont respond.
Moto G3 really pushes me past the limit. Freeze after freeze, then overheating.
I have the 1GB RAM version of this device and 32GB SD Card
I have unlocked the bootloader and tried installing custom roms like AOSP 7.0 , and CM 13 and CM12, and they all seem to make my device overheat and apps like snapchat and messenger keep force closing and driving me mental. im honestly so close to chucking this phone at a wall.
Can someone recommend to me a good daily driver rom that doesnt freeze like this and get incredibly slow over time . Stock rom performance is also horrific on this device, and no i am not being oversensetive before you assume that, the freezing and overheating and bad battery life is honestly horrible
Cheers Guys,
JD

My son is autistic, so I have helped fight this battle... Seeing you have a 1GB ram model, finding a smooth rom will be tough... RR is pretty good, and usually CM and stock are as well, you can try Squid kernel to smooth it out too.
Are you using your SD card as adopted storage? If so, don't... It is a huge contributor to lag. Otherwise lean and trim is the rule, eliminate anything installed that isn't essential.
Try CM13. CM13 isn't quite as stable as stock, but if you're okay with the odd random reboot now and again, it's a great ROM.

If you restore to 6.0.1 u can setup adoptable storage with AND and update back to 7.0 and still have adoptable storage working. Working great for me.

I "think" it's when you can format the external sdcard a certain way to let the phone use it as internal storage... And install apps directly to the sdcard (?)
Maybe someone else can clarify for us both...?

Really? The last 7.0 beta let me use adoptable storage, I don't know why they would have taken it away in the official. Guess I'll have to double check when I do a clean install
Any instructions?
