I purchased a used G970U1 version of the S10e off Swappa, and I have a question. Would it make any sense to install the stock firmware on this device, to start with a 'fresh' install, to fix any possible alterations the former user may have made to the device?
Actually I suppose this question would apply to any used phone out there. Is this something that would make sense to do, or is it just overkill?
Thanks for any input anyone might have on the topic!
Go with factory reset first.

Sorry for what must seem like stupid question, but haven't found this answered anywhere.
I've heard that OTA updates can block root avenues, so that means I should root as soon as I can, right?
But what I'm wondering is: Is Froyo a finished product, ready to use on any phone it is installed on (right specs of course)? Or does each phone manufacturer need to customize Froyo for their specific phone?
I can go to a computer parts store, and as long as I buy everything I need, I know I can install and run windows on it. Is Android the same way? Or do the manufacturers need to take "virgin" Android and plug it into their hardware?
I have an Epic, and while waiting for Cyanogen, I would like to install stock 2.2 right now. Can I do that? And have a fully functional phone?
Thanks to everyone here.
If you are upgrading to 2.2 from the manufacturer, you should be fine. There are still methods to root that. If it is a 2.2.1 upgrade I would hold out and wait for a 2.2[.1] ROM to be created for your device.
To answer your other question. There is the 2.2 user interface which is pretty portable and should work on any device. The KERNEL is NOT. And that is what needs to be developed for your device by the community before you can get real custom ROMs. Unfortunately these two things come hand in hand so you can't just put any 2.2 rom on your device. It needs to be "fitted" (as you put it) with the right Kernel (among other things). Because of the nature of that, some of the UI and other System code may also need to be changed for the device to function properly. Do NOT flash a ROM not listed for your device. If the ROM flashes both the recovery partition and the normal boot partition, your phone will most likely be bricked. Even if it doesn't it can still brick your phone.
what about apps to SD card
(Dcow90, thanks for the quick response )
I read that rooted 2.1 would allow this, is this correct? Rooting won't change anything on my phone, just the permissions, right? So I could root now and move my apps, and then upgrade once the kernal is out, yes?
Is there a tutorial on rooting anywhere on the site? A clear explanation of what it is and what it does? If not, there should be, I wouldn't have needed to post if there was.
Thanks again for all your help guys.
Hi guys,
There are threads on this and I have taken a look. Most solutions to this issue (apparently a radio file that is incompatible with certain devices rolled out with the 2.3.6 update) require a flash (radio, rom etc.).
My phone is unrooted and since I still have the return policy, I don't want to disrupt too much and spend too much time rooting/unrooting just to get it to work.
I'd like to try either a radio flash or a full wipe back to 2.3.5 or 2.3.4 in order to see if this is actually a hardware defect, or a software issue as above.
Can anyone advise on whether or not it will be possible to do a full wipe back to 2.3.5 or earlier without having a rooted phone?
I tried the other thread on flashing the radio but I believe it is not possible without root access.
I apologize for the noob thread, but I could not find an answer to this problem specifically for those with unrooted phones..
Thank you.
Hi there,
There's no way to return to an older version with stock recovery. You would need to root and install a custom recovery. Then you will be able to rollback to the older version of the update.
Since you don't want to do that, the only option is to return the device and get another.
Root is extremelly easy with SuperOneClickRoot (just in case you're afraid of loose too much time on this).
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I guess I was just grasping at straws.
I was following a guid eon nexus hacks for rooting and the process seems relatively quick and painless... would I need superuser installed if all I'm doing is the recovery tools for now?
Its not the rooting part I'm worried with, or the unrooting as there's guides for those (and its quite a simple process) its just the possibility of something messing up along the way
Actually the fastboot unlock and recovery install is pretty painless. Just make sure you have the correct custom recovery for your phone model.
You don't need superuser if you're just running the recovery and have all the roms you will need in you phone's "sdcard"
Fair, I guess if all I'm doing is unlocking fastboot and then am able to "relock" it, it is relatively painless.
This might be a very stupid question and it is a bit OT but since you're active in this thread for the moment, customer recovery... I am a bit at a loss on how to retrieve that from? I was merely hoping that by unlocking fast boot, I can just "flash" in a radio file, but I assume I should backup those radio files first...
You are correct. Just flash the correct radio and you're good to go.

Hello,
First I just wanted to apologize for my ignorance, I'm new to this form, well, forums in general, and the last thread I was unable to reply on, so I figured the only way is to just ask.
I recently received a tab plus model 6210 from ebay, and when it requested updates, they failed. after playing around a while i realized that there was a superuser icon, so it must have been rooted already, but prior to that, I had been having some issues. One of those being some apps crashing.
Another issue, which is currently one of my primary issues is my inability to use my Paypal Here App which includes a credit card reader, because when I attempt to re-download my app from the market, it says it's incompatible. That I don't quite understand. It's running ICS 4.0.4 as is my unrooted galaxy S2 on sprint, and I am able to run it on my phone. This was one of the major factors in my purchase of the tablet, to be able to better conduct business but I'm thinking maybe the root is part of the problem, or whoever had rooted it previously possibly messed it up somehow.
I'm wondering if it would be better to unroot the device and start clean, or if downloading a new ROM for it might help fix that issue. The device was supposedly factory reset as it left the seller, and was also reset through the recovery from poweroff mode. I am not sure what has been done to the device so I'm a little hesitant to proceed, but here are the stats that I have if they are any help:
android version is 4.0.4
build number imm76d.xxLPL
kernel: [email protected]#3 SMP PREEMPT mon jun 25 22:02:05kst 2012
Thank you in advance for anyone with advice on how to proceed with either unrooting/"re"rooting or a good rom recommendation to help get this thing in working order.

I wouldn't unroot the tab.
I would enter CWM and wipe cache, then factory reset.
Be sure you have latest 6.0.1.0 CWM installed before you reset.
Good luck!

How do "unroot" device? It's extremely easy to mess things up when doing it, so I'll be somewhat vague hoping that only those with the ability to understand my directions will attempt it: You need to get rid of /system/bin/su (which requires su and remounts to do) and then to uninstall SuperUser. If you don't know how to do this, you will probably be better off restoring a factory image. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367478
The PayPal Here app on Google Play says it's incompatible with all my devices too. That includes my GT-P6210, which I don't think Play can know is rooted -- at least not when I'm accessing Play on my laptop. And the app description says nothing about not running on rooted devices.
IMO you have a couple of options:
Look for the PayPal Here .apk file (Google, this forum, wherever) and see if you can't simply install it on the tab.
Write to the developer and ask if the app is compatible with the tab, if they can change the Play parameters to show it's compatible, or if they can send you the .apk to install directly.
Not to be a spoil sport, but the app description clearly states that it doesn't support tablets. Until PayPal decides to change this, I think you're out of luck.
As for the root issues, I'd personally nuke-and-pave it and take it back to stock ICS then root it myself. Custom ROMs for this tablet aren't quite up to speed yet, despite awesome developer efforts.
When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.
By the way, its no a very good idea to use a pre rooted device, that you bought from internet, to do things related with money and credit card.

i thought i set this thing to email me new replies, alas i had not received any. but thank you, i actually did go into systems and deleted 3 items from the system and data folder, as i read from another senior member here on xda. i still think it is giving me issues though, samsung wont allow it to update correctly, so i think a factory image would be the best, however i do not know where to find one. i just want to get it back to factory, or updated with a new rom so it stops acting weird.. thank you for your help.

Thank you i actually had went to paypals site and checked compatibility shortly after this post lol, found that out, and had facepalm moment. guess i assumed since it was like a giant phone on the same os it would work, since they advertise it being used on tablets and stuff. or maybe im thinking the intuit. i can wait on that though, im sure its coming at some point. can still use on my phone
Sorry if this is a request for a lot of other threads out there but I can't find anything definitive, specifically since the release dates for JB are scattered by region and there's not always a clear answer to my situation because of that.
I have an XT925, the international RAZR HD. I got it recently her in Australia on the Telstra network with ICS preinstalled and with JB already released as an upgrade. I did save my root from ICS and still have root currently on Jelly Bean. It does, however, annoy me that I have to pull apart CWM packages, move all the files, and set permissions. In addition to that I've seen some talk about lag and people doing a factory reset to fix that. I have tremendous lag in folders in the default launcher and occasional noticeable lag in Nova launcer (which I prefer to use) window animations. My experience with Android has been with the Galaxy S II, which is still a great phone, however it is a phone that's easy as pie to root and deal with.
I have a lot of questions, some answered elsewhere but not necessarily in a context that applies to the situation I'm thinking of (and all the ins and outs would be too much to list), nor specifically for JB. Things get obscure given the
Please don't ask questions about why I'd want to unlock the bootloader, be rooted, etc. These are things I can decide for myself. Also, I'm aware I need to backup all my apps and app data to the SD card and pull the entire SD card contents. Please don't answer any of the questions unless you have first hand experience; I really would rather not get well intentioned misinformation that leads to a problem.
1. Can root survive a factory reset of JB. I presume it formats everything needed but still have to ask.
2. If the bootloader is unlocked, and I'm on JB, can I flash SuperSU by sideloading? If not, has anyone done it on a bootloader unlocked XT925 with CWM?; I've read some posts that involve a lot of confusion about the ease of installing CWM and using it on this phone. I should mention that I'm not familiar with TWRP and would like to stick to what's more familiar for the time being, assuming I go down this route.
3. Is there some advantage of TWRP over CWM? Honestly I don't even know what TWRP is; is this something I should learn since I have a Motorola phone? Also, is CWM well written for the device so far? Has anyone done a Nandroid backup and restore with it? Does it perserve time stamps (for OTA updates later given that system files have a 2010 timestamp on my device, for example)?
4. Has anyone had any of the more seemingly unlikely problems stated on the unlocking page of the Motorola site that you "may" have and for example, phone calls not working, apps not working anymore etc? Also, it specifically says "You will not be able to watch any movies you downloaded". Does this apply to videos purchased from google or does it mean that videos I've put on my phone will be unplayable? (I'm not even sure we can purchase Google movies from Australia).
5. There's a thread about disabling the unlocked bootloader warning, at boot, by replacing the file that provides the warning with one that does not, however I recall that the thread discussion was before the JB update (in my locale). Is this something that can still be disabled using the same tools in JB (assuming the original discussion was indeed for ICS)?
6. Does a factory reset wipe the system partition?.. specifically asking this because I've been keeping track of all files put to my system partition so that if there's another OTA at some point, it hopefully won't fail because I can remove everything added but if resetting wipes everything it would be easier to just do that.
7. Did anyone with an unlocked bootloader on ICS have a problem with the JB update, or more specifically if you had an unlocked bootloader on ICS, did it interefere with the OTA update to JB?
8. You know when you wake up to an alarm and have responsibilities but you'd rather just go back to sleep, but you get up anyway and it takes time before you accept the day ahead; doesn't that suck?
Any help here is appreciated.
It would be great if we had a master sticky FAQ thread for all the noob questions that one could conceive of. I hope that someone is able to write one.
Hi guys,
I have been trying to figure out a way to update my os without rooting and I found this:
1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All
2. Find Google Services Framework.
3. Tap on Force Stop.
4. Select Clear Data.
5. Head back to the Nexus 10′s Settings, go to About, and check for a System Update.
It is working for these Nexus folks somewhat..
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-10-tablet/252790-how-i-updated-jb-4-2-2-no-rooting.html
But I wanted to know how to recover if I had to, to the previous version. Then I read that downgrading can brick your phone if you have a Samsung 3.
I wish I could just get a Nexus phone with my requirements. But I am willing to suffer a little more with this 3g phone if I can get 4.2 installed on the phone so I can use miracast. I don't want to give up the keyboard, a removable battery, expandable memory and the size..
I would like to avoid bricking the phone and I am a noob. I just want to go from 4.1 to 4.2, thats it.
Any help with the non root procedure would help. Also I don't know where the system requirements are for these different versions but I assume the relay can handle 4.2.
This is an unlocked tmobile phone that I am using on att.
thank you guys so much.
As fas as I know there is no 4.2 Stock Android from Samsung. It is the 4.1.2 which is the last one.
If you would like to update to not genuine Android there are some ROMs to choose from.
Don't ask which is the best as it is not good question here, as we don't know what is the best for who.
But I think we should all make a petition to Samsung to make any official update.
Question to admins by the way:
Where can we do polls or anything to try?
Thank you for the reply,
the procedure above is supposed to bypass the carriers OTA updates. Samsung has updates to lollipop now, but not for this phone.
I am assuming the folks using the procedure got around the carrier obstacle. What do you think. I was going to try it but then I was looking into reverting back just in case and I found the info about the S3 bricking when downgrading so I got cold feet.
thanks
