[Q] Unroot or install new ROM? - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

Hello,
First I just wanted to apologize for my ignorance, I'm new to this form, well, forums in general, and the last thread I was unable to reply on, so I figured the only way is to just ask.
I recently received a tab plus model 6210 from ebay, and when it requested updates, they failed. after playing around a while i realized that there was a superuser icon, so it must have been rooted already, but prior to that, I had been having some issues. One of those being some apps crashing.
Another issue, which is currently one of my primary issues is my inability to use my Paypal Here App which includes a credit card reader, because when I attempt to re-download my app from the market, it says it's incompatible. That I don't quite understand. It's running ICS 4.0.4 as is my unrooted galaxy S2 on sprint, and I am able to run it on my phone. This was one of the major factors in my purchase of the tablet, to be able to better conduct business but I'm thinking maybe the root is part of the problem, or whoever had rooted it previously possibly messed it up somehow.
I'm wondering if it would be better to unroot the device and start clean, or if downloading a new ROM for it might help fix that issue. The device was supposedly factory reset as it left the seller, and was also reset through the recovery from poweroff mode. I am not sure what has been done to the device so I'm a little hesitant to proceed, but here are the stats that I have if they are any help:
android version is 4.0.4
build number imm76d.xxLPL
kernel: [email protected]#3 SMP PREEMPT mon jun 25 22:02:05kst 2012
Thank you in advance for anyone with advice on how to proceed with either unrooting/"re"rooting or a good rom recommendation to help get this thing in working order.
*Rayne

I wouldn't unroot the tab.
I would enter CWM and wipe cache, then factory reset.
Be sure you have latest 6.0.1.0 CWM installed before you reset.
Good luck!

How do "unroot" device? It's extremely easy to mess things up when doing it, so I'll be somewhat vague hoping that only those with the ability to understand my directions will attempt it: You need to get rid of /system/bin/su (which requires su and remounts to do) and then to uninstall SuperUser. If you don't know how to do this, you will probably be better off restoring a factory image. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367478

The PayPal Here app on Google Play says it's incompatible with all my devices too. That includes my GT-P6210, which I don't think Play can know is rooted -- at least not when I'm accessing Play on my laptop. And the app description says nothing about not running on rooted devices.
IMO you have a couple of options:
Look for the PayPal Here .apk file (Google, this forum, wherever) and see if you can't simply install it on the tab.
Write to the developer and ask if the app is compatible with the tab, if they can change the Play parameters to show it's compatible, or if they can send you the .apk to install directly.

Not to be a spoil sport, but the app description clearly states that it doesn't support tablets. Until PayPal decides to change this, I think you're out of luck.
As for the root issues, I'd personally nuke-and-pave it and take it back to stock ICS then root it myself. Custom ROMs for this tablet aren't quite up to speed yet, despite awesome developer efforts.

When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.
By the way, its no a very good idea to use a pre rooted device, that you bought from internet, to do things related with money and credit card.

i thought i set this thing to email me new replies, alas i had not received any. but thank you, i actually did go into systems and deleted 3 items from the system and data folder, as i read from another senior member here on xda. i still think it is giving me issues though, samsung wont allow it to update correctly, so i think a factory image would be the best, however i do not know where to find one. i just want to get it back to factory, or updated with a new rom so it stops acting weird.. thank you for your help.

Thank you i actually had went to paypals site and checked compatibility shortly after this post lol, found that out, and had facepalm moment. guess i assumed since it was like a giant phone on the same os it would work, since they advertise it being used on tablets and stuff. or maybe im thinking the intuit. i can wait on that though, im sure its coming at some point. can still use on my phone

Will update still allow having root?

I got my wife the Samsung galaxy plus 7 for her birthday today and it's saying that there is an update for it. I'm not sure if its ok to except the update or not, because eventually I would like to get it rooted. Also, I read that in order to get root, you must first update the kies. Sorry for possible a simple question to some, but what are kies?
Thanks,

hey it is safer than safe to update it is infact encouraged to update at all times as updates are made to fix manufacturer bugs and/or issues that may be present on the device weather you have noticed them or not they will be present for sure like the SOD issue Screen of death a bug that makes your device shut down and/or reboot randomly with no control...this is a manufacturer bug and an update will be required to remove the issue from the device. so basically you will need to update on the device and with the Samsung kies (kies is a software that you will need to download from Samsung just search it on Google to learn more and to download kies is universal to all devices supplied by Samsung and i would also like to recommend not rooting your device until you are experienced enough to repair any damages you may encounter on the way if you do lol.
the purpose of root is to gain more advanced control of your device and/or install a custom ROM on the device (but we don't have any custom roms as of yet as Samsung will not release the sauce code) if you need any help and i will help you. if this post help you please press thanks button

I've rooted many devices and understand the consequences that comes with it. What I was wondering is, if I except the update will I loose the option of gaining root.
I had this happen to me before when the wife decided (I was still in bed) to accept the update to her evo. So while she had to sit back watching me change rom's, making backups, she was stuck running the stock os for a while. I do understand that at present there aren't any rom's, but I would still like to use TB, ad blocker and everything else that comes with having a rooted device.
Thanks for your reply,

The way that Garyd9 made the root script; by pushing it via recovery in a chroot environment; it should be safe to accept the updates. Unless Samsung changes the base recovery gary9d's method should always work.

yes you can still get root i have the latest update by kies and i have rooted meany times on the device after messing it up LOL. i would recommend using the root and clock work mod combo its stated not stable but i have used it for moths and have backed up 100s of times and restored lol

So you are all experts, what about newbies?(Root, Unlock, OTA etc..)

Dear friends,
as i have been hanging out in this forum, i have learnt a lot. But still, i cannot understand the attitude why people treat, reply or explain everything in a way that assumes all of us are android experts.
TF700 is my first android device(have been using Apple before) so I really need to improve-or create- fundamental knowledge. Just for your information, replying messages like; "ok now Unlock the Root system instead OTA .21 and blablablabla?" (btw. i am well aware of the fact that this sentence is totally meaningless)
Whatever, my point is it would be wonderful to have a fundamental knowledge thread, also keeping your great posts too at the same time.
Cheers!!

I am a newbie too -- bought the tf101 a couple of months ago - loved it -- told my husband he could have it - I was buying the 700 ! and was lucky enough to be able to order one (we live in Canada..... Tiger Direct.ca had them)
I have learned a lot from this forum -- glad I found it --- but I won't be "unlocking" anything ! the only thing I know how to "root" are my house plants !!! lol !! we don't even own smart phones yet -- we still have dumb phones !!! but I have my TF700 !!!
You mean sth like this?
seems hard, but it's not.
It seems tough in the beginning for noob, but actually you're going to get it. You should read the "Index" pointing out by d14b0ll0s to gain some basic knowledge and familiar with the terminology then you should be fine. Couple key words I want to point out that you should know. Currently TF700 came with a locked boot loader, meaning you not able to flash (install) custom firmware from our developers. This is a biggest issue at the moment. Sure there're workaround but it's a pain in the as...and unstable(could brick your pad if you not doing it right). When you see numbers like 21,22,26, they are firmware version number. The latest should be 26. OTA stands for "over the air" and we referred to firmware push to our pad by Asus, not manually download and install ourselves. Rooted is a process that you gain access as a administrator on your pad (you have full access to your phone), with rooted privilege you can almost do anything with your pad, like uninstall Asus embed software, do a full backup of your entire OS (operating system), modified system files etc... CWM is a tool you installed on your pad in order to flash (install) custom firmware. So at the minimum you should have root, and in the future when new custom firmware arrived, you can install cwm and used this tool to flash them. Keep in mind that with locked boot loader, you can't flash custom firmware. Finally, once you're rooted or have custom firmware installed, your pad will no longer can accepted OTA firmware (firmware push to your pad by Asus). In this case you need to roll back to stock (re installed factory firmware and no root), before you can do OTA update. Currently, I suggest you should stay on the side line and waiting for the OTA 4.1.1 JB (new Operating System called Jelly Bean, version 4.1.1 will be push to your pad by Asus). After reading this post you should be ready to play... good luck!
Sorry, but I don't get it, what is it about Verizon? Is it because you bought yours from Verizon? Mine comes from ASUS and I believe the OTA updates are from ASUS servers. Is it the US-specific thing that you mentioned?
Yeah... Everything is pretty easy even for people that have no clue what they are doing. My suggestion right now is to root but not unlock. Rooting is as simple as running the .bat file and following on screen directions (assuming you are using Windows). The only thing you need to do after the program is finished is to open up the Superuser app (might be SuperSU) and restart after that for safe measure.
Unlocking does VOID YOUR MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY (and possibly all others you may have purchased). Make sure you know what you want to do with an unlocked device before you do it. Personally, I am waiting for a stable JB build before I unlock. But the choice is ultimately up to you.

I agree with Skullmonkey on this. Until you are ready for really hacking the system, all you really need is to root the system (run the DebugFS) to get "administrator access to your device".
You might want to read what buhohitr wrote several times as there is much to be gleaned from it. If it helps, copy/paste the contents of buhohitr's repsonse to a notepad text document and go through it word-for-word, isolate those that you find questionable or troublesome, then research what those words are. Anything that is "super difficult" you can just post back here in the Q&A section and I'm sure someone will help you in no time.
another noob question: does rooting the device void manufacturing warranty?
It does not. Only unlocking the device does.

So if I root my Infinity...
...which pre-included apps can I get rid of?
Also which preloaded apps are best to bump off if I dare a root?
I have never dabbled with android down in the file system much for fear of doing something irreparable.
Well, to the OP: we already have quite a few 'basic' threads going on here, and no one forces you to embark on the more advanced stuff, do we? Just read up on it, and when you feel like you can make the jump, pick it up little by little. We're not all experts in here, but most of us can follow directions of the gurus really good, and we have the advantage of knowing how to save our butts when the excrement impacts the ventilator. (And most of us learnt it the hard way, by bricking and breaking...)
You should be fine in the regular forums, and as the others have said, stay out of the development sections until you feel secure enough to dabble around with unlocking and so on.

What's the method for unrooting/reflashing to stock at the moment? I rooted because I wanted to use Titanium Backup right after I got back up to .26. If we haven't figured out how to custom flash roms by the time jellybean comes out, I'll need to go back to stock. I would *hate* to have to lose all my apps, and its possible that titanium backup from 4.0.3 to 4.1.1 might royally screw up the system in doing a restore. So, if that's the case, I guess I'll reflash someway and lose everything? Doh.

One method to get rid of root would be factory reset (power on while holding both the power and volume down while booting and running a factory reset.) But you could probably temporarily unroot with voodoo ota root keeper and then reroot once you install the upgrade to jelly bean with its root keeper.

That's not true. Funny I've been responding to the same kind of "advice" a few minutes ago in another thread.
Temporarily unrooting through Root Keeper should work, but rooting has prevented updating firmware only for some users. I was rooted and installed updates both manually and through OTA without experiencing any issues. Getting to stock /system partition basically means restoring stock configuration files (like build.prop etc.), removing /system/xbin/su and any copies made by RootKeeper, as well as things that install to /system like BusyBox.
Even if you're rooted you should be able to update firmware manually through stock recovery (power down, power up, hold power and volume down, release, press volume up, etc., with microSD formatted FAT32 and with EP201_768_SDUPDATE on it, it's already in the how-to threads in the general section).

+ 1 I have rooted several tablets/phone over the last two years and backed it up using voodoo rootkeeper with ZERO issues updating firmware/OTAS. The only thing that happens after updating is that I loose root, but that's where voodoo OTA rootkeeper comes to play. Only a handful of people have had problems. Some are legit while others have messed/modded their device prior to updates. (like removeing system apps or modding build. Props)

I just recently picked this up from walgreens $94.15 out the door.
It came with root access, I got it home popped in a SD card that I had SuperSU and Root Explorer on, allow unknown sources was already checked so I used the native file manager and tried to install SuperSU, it installed, I opened it it asked to update the binary I said ok it said success, so I went back and installed Root Explorer opened it it asked for Superuser permissions I said yes and Voila!:victory: FULL ROOT. I then called southerntelecom to ask about the firmware update to support google play and what not; if it would revoke Super User permissions like most firmware updates do. I could tell that they didn't really want to give me a straight answer, was told they couldn't answer, that they weren't sure if it would or not, (how could they not know? ) I was even put on hold a couple of times, I was eventually told that someone in tech support was going to install the update on one of the tablets they had there and they would call me back and have an answer for me. That was on a Friday, and believe it or not, Monday afternoon they called me back But they still really didn't have an answer for me, said that tech support didn't get a chance to do an install to check .
But anyhoo what I WAS able to find out, was that, supposedly, every thing needed to support google was already installed, just missing the google APK's because of licensing, kinda like CM. So time to do some investigating. I took a jelly bean gapps package (I think it was for 4.2.3 cause google ears was in it) and started comparing; and what I found was it did seam to have all the needed underlaying google framework support files except for com.google.android.media.effects.jar, Facelock.apk, Phonesky.apk/aka playstore, and of course the regular google apps that you can download from the playstore. I of course had everything extracted out of the gapps.zip file and I just dropped them into their respective places and folders, set permissions and ownership, deleted dalvic cache and cache and rebooted and waited..........aaaannndddddddd BAM! :highfive::victory:
I now have an 8" tablet with full Root SuperUser capabilities, 1ghz dualcore processer (overclocked with set cpu,) 1GB/DDR3 ram, Dual cameras, WI-FI,(look's like it also has support for a 3g dongle), Bluetooth, HDMI out and fully supports google play store and whatnot.
I cant complain, pretty pleased with it actually, it's fast, and seems to have decent battery life and I also now have init.d support on it. There's a few more tweaks I would like to do to it yet like expanding the 4gb internal storage with the 32gb external SD card; ideally I would like to seamlessly merge the two so the tablet would see just one 36gb storage place for all apps and whatnot but I think I'm hoping for too much on that one:silly:
Please help me
Good morning sir/mam, I'm resetting my Polaroid A8 but i can't reset because i don't know how to boot in recovery mode. Can you help me how to boot in recovery mode? . Thanks in advance

[Q] clockworkmod

Hi!
Dont know if this is posted in the correct thread, but I'll try anywayz.
I have a LG g2, and when I accepted a software update the phone got stuck in the clockworkmod recovery-something.
Tried to click on factory reset etc, but nothing works. It just loops back to the same place.
The company that sold the phone say they will not repair it because clockworkmod is unauthorised software and the warranty does not apply.
The problem is, I have never herd of clockworkmod in my life before this happened. Can clockworkmod install itself without me doing anything?
I checked my backupinfo on apps installed from google play and none of them said clockworkmod.
Is it possible to find out when a program was installed and how it was installed?
If anyone has any idea, I would be very greatfull.

Hi!
Dont know if this is posted in the correct thread, but I'll try anywayz.
I have a LG g2, and when I accepted a software update the phone got stuck in the clockworkmod recovery-something.

Did you buy this phone brand new? It looks like the previous owner installed CWM Recovery on it. You can flash a custom firmware for your LG G2 from CWM or if you want to return to stock firmware, follow the steps from here: droidviews.com/how-to-restore-lg-g2-to-stock-firmware/
As for warranty, this is not covered, sorry.
Also, CWM CANNOT install itself. Either you or someone else installed it. You usually need root to install or you need to flash it. So it can't happen by accident. You can't install it like a normal app from the play store.

Hi, and thank you so much for the answer.
I bought the phone brand new from the store. I looked at the link, and thank you for that - I don't think I am capable of doing such a prosedure myself - but maybe I can send it to a mobile-workshop and they can do it for me. Thank you so much for that as well.
I don't understand how this program got in to my phone, they said that it was "rooted with unauthorised software" - I have no idea what rooting means. I am going to try to get to the bottom of this and find out how this program got into my phone in the first place.

You are very welcome. If you do not know what rooting is, then clearly it wasn't you who did it. Your phone gut stuck because of the custom recovery on your phone. Updates can only work with stock (original) recovery.
Was the phone sealed? (the box, the battery...?) It really sounds like somebody from that store ripped you off with a modified phone.
If you can't prove it, then take it to a mobile service. I'm sure they can handle it. Sorry for your warranty though..
Good luck with it.
Thanks again for the answer. I talked to a company who offers mobile workshop. They said it is no way of finding out who "rooted" the phone. I don't know why they keep talking about the rooting. I sent an email and asked if it was possible to find out when and how a program was installed on my phone. Do you know if it is possible to find out primarily WHEN clockworkmod was intalled, and secondary how it was installed?
On computers you can see when a program was installed so I thought maybe you could do that with mobile phones as well?
Sorry for all this stupid questions, but I am quite annoyed because I bought the phone from the biggest telephone company in my country, and now it has become my mission in life to prove that I didn't do this myself
Best Regards

Unfortunately, I don't think you can find out when CWM recovery was installed, or when the phone was rooted.
They keep talking about rooting because your phone is most likely rooted. Rooted means having a piece of software installed on the phone that gives you full access. And you can then modify anything on the phone, including system files. It's like having Administrator rights on Windows let's say.
Good luck with your phone

What is the latest Root Method for SM-P900 us version?

Looking through many post, all of them seem rather old, Im finally ready to root my tablet, Im tired of all of the lag I get and it seems as Samsung has let the 12.2 pro die.
Im running 5.02
Build: LRX22G.P900UEU1COL1
Kernel: 3.4.39-5574008
Knox: 2.3
I found this post by dwl99 http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-pro-12/general/success-rooting-sm-p900-knox-0x0-t3377416
It seem only one person has tried it
Thanks for any input you may have
I'm not sure if you found your answer, but if you're willing to trip KNOX, I was able to root my p900 US version on 5.0.2 by using the method in the post found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-pro-12/general/guide-install-official-lollipop-p900-t3154362
Thanks
I will check it out, I dont care about Knox at this point since Samsung has let this tablet die

Yep. My faith in Samsung hardware is hit or miss, but my faith in them having too many models for them to keep up with is starting to wane.
Anyways, I had no problem getting TWRP on it, and flashing SU. Just follow the post and if it doesn't show up on your computer, try other USB ports. For some reason these samsungs are picky. I had to try three USB ports to get it to register in Odin. After that it was no problem. I verified it with JRummy's tool, and have run other root apps, and it took just fine.
I wasn't able to get xposed working, but that might be an issue with the stock ROM. No big deal though. Backups, moving apps to SD, and such, are all capable with root and TWRP, though it would have been more tidy to have the SD card as an extension of the on-board, I can live without it.
If you need my stock ROM build info it's P900UEU1COI1_P900XAR1COI1 (cellular south). There are two US ones I see available for 5.0.2, and have no idea what the difference is, but that one works fine for me. So if you have to Odin first, or after, that one seemed to go well for my US P900. Use that info at your discretion, because I can't see your current build info.
Thanks for the info
The tablet seem very laggy when on the net lately, Im tired of it
My Build: LRX22G.P900UEU1COL1

Same build here.
Follow the directions carefully (you likely don't need to do the first area as you're already up to date), and you should be all set. Just remember to backup everything important first. Since you already have your info/apps in place, and aren't changing ROMS's, there isn't much to it. Don't forget to do a backup using TWRP after you have everything up and running. You'll want to download busybox from the app store, after you're rooted.
Careful if you decide to go with a custom ROM after. I didn't have much luck with cyanogen mod 13, because it knocked out a lot of my Spen needs, and there are a fair number of reports of random reboots on the one I tried. Hopefully that will change and I can update to 6.0.1 when/if it does.
For you, there shouldn't be a need to wipe data or factory reset, but if the lag continues you may want to wipe your cache's once you have your nandroid backup.
PM me if you run into any issues, or better yet, with any questions you're unsure about, before an issue happens
Will Do Blade, :good:
Thanks
