Galaxy Tab 4 7. SMT230 First Root - Galaxy Tab 4 General

Hi All,
New to rooting (but not to software) and trying to get my feet wet by rooting an old Tab 4 7.0
I did some preliminary reading and if I understood correctly:
1) Give yourself root acees
2) Access your bootloader
3) Install a custom rom?
What software do you recommend for each step? It seems a lot fo the guides use software that has since been tagged as unsafe.
As for apps, can anyone recommend a custom ROM for the Tab 4? I was also interested in a kernel since battery life can be a problem. Any other app recommendations are welcome.
Really appreciate the help, its cool what you guys do here!

Hi,
to install CWM Recovery and root the tab, you can follow these instructions (point A) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722745
Then if you want to install a custom rom, follow these instruction (this is for CyanogenMod 10.1 but I think it is the same way to install other roms) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052290

Are you purchasing new ? Or are getting this second hand ? The only reason I ask is because 4.2.1 is not the "stock" software at this time.
Mine came stock with 4.0.4, and I have read that they are now shipping with 4.1.1 installed
The only 4.2.1 version currently out is the custom CyanogenMod 10.1 ROM.
May just be a typo on your original post - but figured I would ask just in case

yep your right its 4.1.many thanks for all your imput everyone very greatfull
Change the title of your thread to reflect your question. This will help others in your situation to quickly find and learn from your post, in turn hopefully preventing more 'how do I root/flash' threads.

First, no you do not need a custom kernel to root, however using a custom kernel can provide benefits such as better performance/battery life and added features like superior audio controls etc. A notable kernel for the Galaxy series is the "Siyah Kernel" but it's up to you, personaly I choose not to after issues in past like higher temps
Odin is the tool used to flash software to your device, this is used to flash custom recoveries, kernels and the stock firmware
Superuser is the app used to control permissions to each individual app on your rooted phone, this prevents apps gaining root that you would prefer not to.
Finally, I have rooted an S2 back when I started out with devices. It's fairly painless and has many benefits but I prefer custom ROMs as well as rooting
Hope I could help, however these answers were available elsewhere after looking for a while which is suggested before posting to avoid duplicates when possible

Can I update Tab2 7" to Android 4.4 or higher

Hi,
Total Newbie here so sorry if this question seems silly or otherwise!!
I have dug my old, redundant Samsung Galaxy Tab2 7" out from the drawer with the intention of using it in the car to operate my GoPro Hero 3. Only snag is the tablet is running 4.1 and The official GoPro app needs 4.4 or above to work.
So im looking for an idiots guide to booting and upgrading if possible., or for someone to show me how to complete the process step ny step. I have tried to look on the interweb for a guide, but there are several, mainly conflicting, guides that I have looked at. None of these seem to make sense to a complete newbie.
Thanks in advance for any help!!
OK
Don't use cwm, it is fully outdated and support for it stopped long time ago.
Go and find twrp for your device.

Android Update for Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 - Suggestions and How-to

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this platform and to be honest a bit overwhelmed. Apologize if this thread is in the wrong section.
I should also mention that I'm not too familiar with technical points.
I own an old Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5110) which claims its Android version 4.2.2 is still the most recent one for this device.
So I'm looking for a way to update to a newer versuon, at least Android 6.
My first question is which Android version you suggest?
Second one, how exactly do I do this (is there a step by step tutorial)?
Third one what are the risks? I read something about data loss and completely broken devices?
Thank you in advance.

Mate, I'm on the same boat. Same tablet, also overwhelmed The only response to your post points to some custom ROM page but the instructions are not detailed. I thought I had to throw my tablet but it seems like it still has some life to breath if I can get it a newer ROM (many apps are not supported anymore with Android 4.2).
I think the first thing to do is root the device but where to start? I'd prefer using linux with adb, etc.
There is a lot of stuff here. Is there anyone that has taken the time to write a detailed step by step guide somewhere?
BTW, my intention is not only to revive the device but to ditch all Google crap apps. In an ideal world, I would have installed a ROM from /e/ Foundation, but they do not support the device so I guess my next best bet is some custom ROM that uses LineageOS?
Hi,
First you need to root your device and install TWRP recovery:
More info here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...final-root-single-step-twrp-recovery-t3404779
It's an old thread but you'll get the idea.
See this one as well:
https://www.getdroidtips.com/twrp-recovery-samsung-galaxy-tab-2/
You'll need to find the correct version for your model otherwise you'll and up with a nice paperweight.
After this, you'll be able to back up your current ROM and install new ones. Unfortunately, I have a different model of Tab 2 that has no available custom ROM's so I can't say which ROM is better than other. I would read more in the link provided for slim roms.
To get rid of the installed bloatware and even Google apps I used SD Maid. See my thread below with what's left on my tablet (Disclaimer: it's a barebone setup and not all things work so I don't advise going that deep unless you're willing to take the risk of having a bricked tablet. You were warned!):

Cheers!
