Complete newbie to android :/ Need help w/ rooting and stuff

Hi guys,
as i said in the title im completely new to all this. My mum has a desire s and i think the sense software is rubbish..hence i want to install MIUI. I have an iPhone which was extremely easy to JB and ive been searching around for help rooting/flashing an MIUI rom to the Desire S but damn it looks complex :| and im being extra cautious because its my mum's phone and i dont want to brick it.
After searching im still confused..
Do i need to root to flash MIUI?
If so, how? Can i use this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100 Is there anything i need to do before and/or after I use this method?
Also, this is the MIUI rom i've found..http://forums.miui.us/showthread.php?2543-ROM-HTC-Desire-S-(saga)
It says the kernel is included in the download, but does that require a seperate installation?
Can someone help me please? Been looking around for days and just not getting it :/
Help will be greatly appreciated!
Sorry, I don't want to sound rude , but , have you checked the first couple of pages here on Q&A ? There are at least a couple of threads with similar querries ....
Plus, there's INDEX (with everything you require) for help , as always !
I'd suggest you read more , before even thinking of S OFF or Rooting!
Best of luck ....
i dunno about your 1st question but once u "jb" ur android, the kernel will be in the same zip so that when u flash the rom, u chg the rom and also the kernel. u will need to flash "gapps" as well if the is no play.market app.
as for your question 1 i use a different method so i cant comment on that.
but do be reminded to do each step and tick it off slowly once u done. DO NOT skip/miss a step. I actually took 2 days 2 nights reading through before rooting it, and i still made a mistake(as i was in a hurry for class, wrong timing for rooting). but once u read through the doing part will be quite fast. next thing u know u can flash different roms when ever ur mom gets bored of her phone interface.
try flashing different rom before and see which is faster and slicker.
try getting a "aokp" rom, it give u more to configure around. miui doesnt have a drawer and it looks alot like an iphone interface if that is what ur mom wants.

Help with root and rom

Ok guys so I hate this phone, I've never wanted to punt a phone up until now, It freezes, crashes, and is extremely annoying but I thought hey maybe if I root it and install a custom rom it make my experience with this phone much better since that's how it went with my G2. I know there are plenty of roms and root instructions out there I was wondering if could get some suggestions or recommendations.
So here is my question, rooting, I found this pretty neat one click roo for this phone, do you guys suggest it? Or is there a better way of doing it?
Second question, I've seen a rom for this phone called RAGE and that's it would you guys be able to suggest a great rom for this phone?
I've only ever rooted the G2 and used CM rom, so ima little new to the rootng world.
Thank you guys so much in advace!!

i would refer to here http://www.xda-developers.com/android/android-basics-101-understanding-kernels-xda-developer-tv/ , you would flash them pretty much as you would flash a custom rom, pretty much they are small modifications like being able to overclock your device. you dont NEED them unless your looking for a specific modification. look at all the kernels on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/development (2012 version of nexus 7) or here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013/development (2013 version) just read the contents, if you have questions about them ask those threads .

I would stick with TWRP as it is a well-supported custom recovery.
Before flashing anything, you need to unlock the bootloader.

What exactly do you want then?
Hii thank you for all the answers 6 months passed and now I'm running 3 months of stable cm 13 with elementalx kernel xposed and a mod which use you in call speaker as secondary speaker for stereo everything works great !
{By the way I found an answer for the stopped question I asked before ( may be someone will need it ) at the toolkit itself you can go to the settings and switch between custom recoveries you even can get one that they not giving [they are giving only cwm and twrp the program know how to download those recoveries by itself ] the program called nexus root toolkit }:good:

Galaxy Tab 4 7. SMT230 First Root

Hi All,
New to rooting (but not to software) and trying to get my feet wet by rooting an old Tab 4 7.0
I did some preliminary reading and if I understood correctly:
1) Give yourself root acees
2) Access your bootloader
3) Install a custom rom?
What software do you recommend for each step? It seems a lot fo the guides use software that has since been tagged as unsafe.
As for apps, can anyone recommend a custom ROM for the Tab 4? I was also interested in a kernel since battery life can be a problem. Any other app recommendations are welcome.
Really appreciate the help, its cool what you guys do here!
