First, no you do not need a custom kernel to root, however using a custom kernel can provide benefits such as better performance/battery life and added features like superior audio controls etc. A notable kernel for the Galaxy series is the "Siyah Kernel" but it's up to you, personaly I choose not to after issues in past like higher temps
Odin is the tool used to flash software to your device, this is used to flash custom recoveries, kernels and the stock firmware
Superuser is the app used to control permissions to each individual app on your rooted phone, this prevents apps gaining root that you would prefer not to.
Finally, I have rooted an S2 back when I started out with devices. It's fairly painless and has many benefits but I prefer custom ROMs as well as rooting
Hope I could help, however these answers were available elsewhere after looking for a while which is suggested before posting to avoid duplicates when possible

Rooting can be risky, so please make sure you reed the instructions on the first link carefully and follow them to the letter.
Head to the SGS 2 forum and read around a lot about rooting. It's the only way to be sure you're doing it properly.
You may either need to just flash a rooted kernel, which will leave your phones ROM (the OS of the phone) as it is but now gives your phone root capabilities.
Or perhaps flash a rom such as Darky's ROM which will root your phone and install a brand new rom (Darky's ROM) all in one go, complete with tweaks and other great features. I'd recommend going through this way as Darky and his crew make flashing a new rom and rooting a painful one step process and once done, you can either stick with his rom, or upgrade to a different rom found on XDA that has more tweaks and improvements. But Darky's is a great one to start on, it's fast stable, has great battery life and while there are other roms out there that improve the SGS2 more, you will not be dissapointed if you stick with Darky's .
It depends what you're after which you do. rooting your current stock rom is great because your phone stays exactly as it is but now has root capabilities so you can look around and pick odd tweaks here and there and install them, and install other apps and such that benefit your phone but need root, but custom roms are usually more tweaked than the stock roms, and can have other tweaks built in already, which can improve battery life, speed, stability, 3g/wifi speeds, and provide useful tweaks to the general experience.
I'd definitely recommend going for a custom ROM.
Read around the SGS2 forum and find one that fits your needs

General Questions Answered!

So, since I'm already a seasoned reader of the forums and a member of the Samsung Galaxy Ace forums right here in XDA, I bought myself a SGT2 7.0: it's great. Mine's the P3110 (Wifi only) and it came with 4.0.3. Now, I'd like to root it and mod it as I see fit but I don't see much information on the current status of things. I dug around the CM Forums and there's no SGT2 7.0 dedicated forums over there. Here I see guides on rooting and the like, but no one talks about the stable releases and/or nightlies of CM9 and CM10. So, to sum it up, here are my questions:
Is it safe to root and mod the SGT2 to CM9?
Where's the buglist of the latest stable release of CM9 for the SGT2?
Can you see a better battery life on CM9 compared with stock?
Should I download the latest OTA on my SGT2?
Now, I wouldn't have asked these questions if I see them answered here or any other forums, so that's that. Thanks in advance for any information you might offer.

Yes, it is. You can root using CF-Auto-Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957160) or other methods that can be found in the same section. I think CF-Auto-Root is the simplest of all. Note that you don't need to root your tab if you intend to flash CM9 (or CM10 which is also available), just follow the instructions in the dedicated thread.

There's basically none, except the official keyboard dock is not working (although it works in AOKP). You're not concerned by IR-Blaster issue since you have a p3110.

I'd say the battery life is similar. Do not expect anything battery-wise. However, you'll be able to notice improvements in performance.

If you intend to stay with stock firmware, yes. The 4.0.4 is much more fluid than 4.0.3, and p3110 has also an official 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) update.
The only drawback of JB (in stock and CM10) is the loss of the Tablet UI, replaced by Phablet UI. However, you can restore Tablet UI on CM10 by using a patch, or natively in AOKP or Paranoid Android. I greatly encourage you to go through a few threads in the development section, to get a better sense of all of this. Do not hesitate though if you feel lost or puzzled.
Thank you very much for your fast responses. Yeah, @PeartFan40, I guess I embarrased myself, haha!
@Einril, it's not that I don't like stock, it's just the bloatware that Samsung installs that makes me go all kinds of green but I'd like to keep my options open if something ever happens to my tablet I can use my guarantee, you know? I read about the Triangle Away app, so I'm good in that area, but just a tiny question: is it mandatory to have it or can I live with that triangle? Also, could I install the official stock firmware later down the road if I'd like? Right now I'm downloading the latest update for my tablet so I can save an image with CWM for safekeeping.
And just for kicks, what's new in CM9 for tablets? I'll google myself what's Phablet UI, don't worry
Thanks again!
What Triangle Away does is that it resets your custom binary counter, which is incremented each time you flash a custom recovery. Flashing a custom recovery on the Galaxy Tab 2 won't show up a triangle at boot, so you can live without using Triangle Away. However, it is necessary to reset it before sending the tab for guarantee.
You can always flash official ROMs via Odin. You can look at http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&model=GT-P3110&pcode=0&os=1&type=3 to find the latest firmware for your country.
What's new in CM9 ? Compared to stock? Basically a lot of customization tools, performance tools, and a more "pure-Google" experience. But it's quite complicated to list all the differences. The best way is to try it yourself

I already installed CM9. It was complicated at first because I had some trouble with ODIN (it seems the button Auto-reset shouldn't be marked) when I installed the CWMRecovery. Now I've downloaded ROM Manager and I'm thinking if I should install the Recovery the app offers. What do you think?
I also was tinkering with the system options and the kernel doesn't have a lot of governors. Any tips on the matter?

Rooted, now installing a rom

Hey guys converter from iPhone over here. Last time I rooted it was fairly straightforward and was able to get going quickly. This newer stuff is a little new to me.
I rooted my sprint s5 using towel root. Now what? I see roms like omega but none really say anything about the sprint model.
What should i do next to install a boottloader then a rom?
Thanks

Assuming you are a new XDA user. Welcome to the forum and be sure to read over the forum rules. They might save you some headache in the future. For example, this post should of been in the Q&A section but no biggie. A mod will move it if need be.
Anyways, about your question, this is the Sprint specific forum so all the roms here should be compatible with the Sprint S5 (900P). Some of the roms will be based off of Touchwiz (these will keep almost 100% of stock functionality while adding some extras) and AOSP roms (custom based on CM, MIUI, etc.) The first post of each rom thread will give you a good idea of what the rom has included, instructions to flash, what works and doesn't, and so on.
If you just rooted get a custom recovery on there and do a backup of the system and EFS first thing. As for bootloader, that is preference and may depend on what rom you flash but I would think you will be fine with what version you have now.
This is also a good thread to take a look at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52456762&postcount=1

How I can root my smartphone? Is that the best choice?

Hello xda-developers!
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Core Plus SM-G350, I thinking about rooting my smartphone with a new Android release, without Samsung's applications. Can this be done? Is this the right solution? How I can do this? I don't want any updates locking!
Thank you!

Hi, from your post I don't quite understand. Do you want to be able to update OTA after you've rooted your device or do you just want to find the best method of rooting?
The best method I would recommend would be flashing a custom recovery to your device via Odin then through the custom recovery flashing SuperSU.
And for the updating bit, every phone I have had has had to be unrooted before an OTA upgrade as not unrooting/returning to stock can cause complications and/or bricking the device
I think that the best way to go about it is to find an application called Poot. Funny name, great results. It will tell you to install another app and then it will ask you if you want to install additional libraries.
I recommend that you connect to WiFi for this.
There is a website called Cyanogenmod. Go there and search for ROMs for your phone, and if you can't, search XDA/
Rule of XDA: If it exists, there's a custom ROM for it.
Hope this helps! Don't forget to use the Thanks button!

In many ways, yes, and also no.
If you can find a ROM to do loaed up onto it (be careful if you do) you can probably overclock it to about 1.4-1.6 Ghz. However, that decreases the battery life. Another thing you can do with a custom kernel is underclocking, which lowers the power usiage if you're just listening to music and whatever.
Do some research. See if there are custo ROMs for the device. I have an old LG Phoenix that I have CyanogenMod 10 loaded up. It has some issues, but modding is great. Plus, with root, you can back up all of you apps and their data to your sdcard. You can also remove bloatware (pre-installed useless apps) and make sytem apps into user apps with Link2SD.
You can do a lot with root, but it voids your warranty and can potentially damage your phone. Be cautious and don't forget to use the Thanks Button!
@lollix01
If this is still valid, there are now a few Custom ROMs and Recoveries here that work on the Samsung Galaxy Core Plus.

Installed TWRP and SuperSU - noob asking for some pointers

Hi,
I have not been into android world for long, that being said I managed to install the CWM to my Samsung S4 and now I installed TWRP and SuperSU to my wife's HTC ONE S (S3)...I have been reading some time now and I know the importance of system backups (if I as a n00b mess something up, which I am bound to) and I promise I'm fast learner so any advice you give me I will try to utilize to the maximum.
What I would like to know is, can you recommend me with some safe and nice running custom roms for HTC ONE S. By reading I now know that there are S3 and S4 and that it is unwise to install ROMs for S4 on S3 device, among other things. I would appreciate few links on the forum to get me started now on chaning ROMs (possible KERNELS after I figure what that is in specifics - from my understandings I should stick to changing ROMs and KERNELS later.
Anyways, the aforementioned HTC ONE S is an S3 with stock 4.1.1 JB on it...so, as said what is my next step my good people  Thank you
examined
