[Q] Rooting Queries

Hello Friends.
I am new to the world of Android and hence have a couple of general queries with regards to rooting.
When I have garnered sufficient knowledge and understanding, I will post in the appropriate section corresponding to my device.
I am vaguely aware of rooting but do not know a bit on how to proceed. Hence, I am here to learn from you all.
I have few basic understandings, please do correct me wherever I am wrong.
My presumptions are -
1] Rooting is reversible. I can un-root my device whenever I desire.
2] Before I root my device, it is highly recommended to backup the Stock ROM and other essentials such as Contacts and Messages, along with the personal data such as photographs, videos etc.
3] After rooting my device, I will be able to remove whichever pre-installed app (bloatware) on my device.
4] I am aware that the rooting process is usually different for every Android device.
5] I am also aware there are pre-rooted stock ROMs that exist as well.
My queries are -
1] Is it advisable to root my device first, then remove the desired bloatwares and after that, backup the stock ROM?
2] What is a pre-rooted stock ROM?
3] After my device is rooted, can I acquire official updates from the manufacturer of my device?

1) No. First root, then backup, then remove bloatware
2) Its a stock ROM (that comes with the phone) with root access
3) Yes u can receive official updates. Also called OTAs. (Over the Air)

Clarification,
I understand the usefulness of back ups, however, I don't keep them... call me dangerous, yes I have soft bricked my phone at work once... I have learned a few tricks along the way for getting out of a bind.
Also most custom ROMs are rooted, ie have su binaries installed and superuser app. They will usually produce a pure stock ROM in order to be "un-rooted."
The OTA question, though, is a trick question. No you cannot receive a pushed OTA if you are on a custom ROM. You may be able to if you were stock rooted. Realistically, you don't want to take an OTA, as it will likely break your root and you may be stuck until a new exploit is found. You will want to un-root to a version with a known root exploit.
You are on the right track and are smart for doing your research before you dive in. Be sure you are comfortable with the procedure and know your options and possible errors.

I don't know if you can, but it is reversible.

Without root, you usually can't backup everything, certainly not the complete ROM.

Yes, (there might be a difference with HTC devices see 'S-Off', i don't own a htc)

The basics are usually the same, get the superuser binary and a management app on your device and make sure they are executable and have the right permissions. HOW they get there is what differs.

No, backup the stock ROM first, if you screw up and remove too much or the wrong thing, you have something to go back to.
After you are done removing bloatware, you can backup again. Transfer the backups off your phone on your computer if they take too much space.

Its the ROM that came with the device, with the only difference that it has already been rooted (su binary and app added).

If you just root your device, yes.
Though you will mostlikely loose your root after you updated and have to root again.

imheroldman, an uncle of mine gifted me a Samsung Galaxy Note during Easter.

During my hectic schedule, I did try to read and research to the best of my capabilities. Thus, I have my further queries.
1] I understand Rooting and Flashing are two different phenomena. Hence, should I discuss my queries relating to flashing ROMs in this very thread or should I start a separate one?
2] From what I have been advised through your replies, I understand I should -
(i) root my device first
(ii) back up the stock ROM and preferably transfer this back up to my computer
(iii) remove the desired bloatwares
(iv) back up the 'tweaked' stock ROM again and transfer it to my computer
I suppose it would do no harm in keeping two different backups, one with the stock ROM in its entirety and the other with bloatwares removed!
3] When the manufacturer releases an official update, I can avail this by restoring the back up created in (ii) of my query 2], and then un-rooting, right?
4] After I root my device, will the Binary Counter increase? I have been unable to read and research on the aspect of the binary counter.

It most definitely never hurts to back up your roms as I've learned the hard way, cool tip, if you're keeping more than one backup make sure you liable them so as to make them distinguishable for future reference.
Removing bloatware is pretty easy, a lot of rooms out there even do it for you and now with the aroma installers a lot of the devs are using it makes it pretty cut and dry picking and choosing what you want installed or don't.
I wish you luck in your endeavors, its pretty awesome all the work these guys have done to make things way easy for beginners like us. Just be patient and read EVERYTHING I can't stress that enough, do your research if you encounter problems before you contact the dev because 9 times out of 10 someone else is having or had the problem before

Thank you Venomusdragon, I will definitely label my backups so that I can distinguish between them if and when the need arises to refer to the said backups.
I am awaiting further responses from the veteran members as well.

I am aware that a device is required to be rooted in order to flash a custom firmware/ROM. Is it the same with a stock firmware/ROM?
Do I need to root the current stock firmware before I flash another stock firmware of my choice?
My device is a Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000. :silly:

Custom firmware is not the same as stock firmware. Stock firmware is 'official' update and doesn't need rooting.

So you have an android phone. It is locked to your carrier. Google releases a new version of android,and the phone manufacturer makes a new firmware (new android + factory skin like say sense or touchwiz)
So,if your phone was unlocked you'd get firmware right away,but instead,the manufacturer is told by the carrier that the new android isn't good for their customers (interferes with bloatware or messes with internet,something like that) so you and everyone with your phone on that network gets skipped when the update rolls out. But you really want that new android...
That's when rooting your phone and flashing stock makes sense. Otherwise, custom roms usually have more features.

I suppose I need not worry as my device is the International version of the Samsung Galaxy Note [GT-N7000] and was sim free. :silly:

S4 (4.2.2) is it leaked to S3 ??

Hi All:
This is my first time here, I've been looking for a Rom for my S3 which can make it more similar to S4 with all its featuers.
I flashed many Rom and most of them has the 4.2.2 update but it has the nexus touch which I didnt like on my S3.
Any recommendations for a good Rom which is stable and have no issues..

The only answer I can give you is: Take a look in the developers forum. If you see something you like, try it. Maybe go for a rom with a stock (Samsung/TouchWiz) look, since that's what you're used to from the stock ROM. Actually, I'd start off by rooting your phone(you've already done that, since you've flashed a lot of ROMs), and remove all the bloatware you never use from stock ROM. Maybe replace a few of the stock apps with better alternatives. This makes the phone faster, and frees up memory.
You can also freeze apps, if you're not comfortable with removing them from the stock ROM. This thread discusses which apps are safe to freeze/remove. The OP links to this document showing a spreadsheet of apps that are safe/not safe to freeze/remove.
If you're not familiar with the term "freezing apps", you should do a forum search(or just Google) Titanium Backup. It's a feature LOADED (you guessed it...) backup-app, which allows you to freeze apps if you don't want to uninstall them completely. In short, it "disables" the app, removing it from the drawer, but keeping it installed. You can easily unfreeze the apps if you need them to work for you again.
Hope this helped you on you way. The world of custom ROMs is huge, so you're guaranteed to find somehing you like.

im sure that a dev will port the s4 touchwiz rom to the s3 soon. Just be patient.

Thanks a lot for all the information that you've shared with me, I am still not familiar with many things in rooting which I might need your help with that.
The first thing, what you guys mean by Stock Rom? does it mean the original android framework that was not modified yet?
2nd: how to remove all the bloatware? and what do you mean by bloatware?
3rd: is it bad for the handset to be flashed again and again with many different ROMs? I always follow the steps which the developers mention in flashing any new ROM, so is there any right ways to do that without damaging my phone?
for now these are all the doubts that I have about rooting, but I might come up with many points in the future,
I hope you guys can help me in getting more knowledge about it, and thanks a lot for your precious time that you are giving me

First, no you do not need a custom kernel to root, however using a custom kernel can provide benefits such as better performance/battery life and added features like superior audio controls etc. A notable kernel for the Galaxy series is the "Siyah Kernel" but it's up to you, personaly I choose not to after issues in past like higher temps
Odin is the tool used to flash software to your device, this is used to flash custom recoveries, kernels and the stock firmware
Superuser is the app used to control permissions to each individual app on your rooted phone, this prevents apps gaining root that you would prefer not to.
Finally, I have rooted an S2 back when I started out with devices. It's fairly painless and has many benefits but I prefer custom ROMs as well as rooting
Hope I could help, however these answers were available elsewhere after looking for a while which is suggested before posting to avoid duplicates when possible

just created an account finally but been around the phone scene for a while. Im def feeling like a noob right now as i cant figure out how to stop this samsung storyservice.apk from naggin me and preventing me from not being able to open certain apps. im on the j700p with a stock rooted rom and ive debloated a few things myself but it seems the apk is somehow supposed to run with a different apk that i am deleting. any advice??? Thank you

This is sounding like self promotion, however, I think you should flash my debloated ROM. It is a lot more simple than manually debloating it yourself.

Virgin Mobile J700P
Hello! First, thank you all for everything you do here--this is an extremely helpful community of people.
I have a Galaxy J700P with Virgin Mobile. Running J700PVPU1APH4 software. I've rooted it and had no success with creating a second partition on the SD card to use Link2SD for apps. I've tried formatting on PC via Minitool Partition Wizard, on the phone using Aparted, and also tried with Apps2SD. Link2SD simply refuses to recognize the 2nd partition ("Mount script error"). It has been suggested to me to try Cyanogenmod or a custom Lollipop (to use adoptable storage).
In short, I'd like to flash a ROM that will allow me to use my SD card for app storage. Being able to continue using Google Play Store apps is also preferred. Are there any suggestions for software that is the most stable for this phone that will allow me to use SD card for app storage? Let me know if you need more info. Thank you for reading!

It;s not self promotion at all man cause i used yours first lol, its was very nicely done until i needed some of those apps for basic functionality. I needed the music and video player and i found that the signal was shotty with your rom compared to stock. There were some others that i cant remember right now. So, I then dirty flashed the stock rom over your rom and added custom recovery and superuser. I gained the tethering feature and the update prl and services which i need in my area sometimes to get better coverage. I know a lot of people dont mind this as they want the minimal. I know Im a noob with this stuff as i came from the lg 740 and this is a whole diff game. Thank you though for your efforts in making the rom i have yet to look on how to thank people cause im still new here. Sorry for the one long paragraph by the way

I have a problem on a J7 2016. Google services eats the battery, being accountable for up to 60% of battery use on every cycle.. I know it is a pretty common problem on lots of phones, but not being able to root / install custom rom (not my phone), any advice on solving it? - besides stopping google account sync.
I have tried uninstalling updates, with no success.

EDIT: I guess I should tell I am on stock MM, last update. Haven't tried to do a HR - full reinstall, hoping there will be a better option

About the play services thing, you can't do anything except flashing a custom ROM without gapps (if you wanna uninstall play services). About the problem you mentioned that you cannot root or install custom ROM, what exactly is the issue? Please exaggerate the problem. Good luck!

do you knows where to find custom roms for my devices that can open any simcard from any network provider?
im still googling until now to find the right custom rom for my devices

The network lock is separate from the rom. Continue with Google.

In short, I'd like to flash a ROM that will allow me to use my SD card for app storage. Being able to continue using Google Play Store apps is also preferred. Are there any suggestions for software that is the most stable for this phone that will allow me to use SD card for app storage? Let me know if you need more info. Thank you for reading!

Would ROMS built for the J700 F/H/M be compatible with the J700T? There is not many ROMS built for the J700T, while there is a bunch for the J700 F/H/M.
The only difference I see in the phones are the different carriers so you would think that they would be compatible with each other.

I don't think so. I had my old Galaxy J-5 fried due to flashing ROM not meant for my device. I would suggest not doing it if it is your primary device. But go ahead if you're a development nut and wanna try it anyways. If you try it and it works, update your post here so others can know.

I have many questions with this bootloader. I'm new to this things. Sorry. Btw I have the J700F J7(2015) model.
1. Is there any way to know if my phone is in locked bootloader or unlocked?
2. I'm planning to install the Pixel Experience rom and I've read that i must unlock the bootloader first. I know that I must be from stock rom. Then I will install the TWRP, then root, then proceed to flashing the rom. In this process, where will I unlock the bootloader? Do I need it to be unlocked before I install the TWRP?
3. I know that I can google it, but is there an easiest way to unlock the bootloader?

Hi. I have your exact same model ?
To unlock the bootloader, enable developer options - in settings, about device, software info. Tap build number 7 times.
Now go back to settings, developer options - enable OEM Unlock. Also enable USB Debugging.
Done.
Are on marshmallow? If yes, make sure SuperSu is version 2.78 or newer.
Tip - make sure to backup your fon first as soon as you install TWRP. BEFORE rooting.
Keep 2 copies of this backup.
To install the Pixel rom you must already be on stock marshmallow

How hard would it be to port a ROM built for the J700 F/H/M to the J700T?

Noob question

Hi everyone, so i'm owning the S10+ (exynos) and i'm looking for rooting my device, however i have quite a few questions and hope someone can help me with:
1. Do i need to have magisk in order to install custom roms?
2. Will i be able to use samsung pass on the custom roms or do i need to export to another app (eg: goolge pass?) ?
3. I changed from asus phone to samsung phone so all of my data is kind of spread between google and samsung accounts. So if i perform a back up then which apps would you guys recommended to backup all data?
4. I own a watch active 2 and buds + so if i install any custom roms will they still working?
I know that's a lot of questions and may seem like dumb to you guys but i'm new with all of this so i feel a bit worries about it. Also sorry for my bad English since it's not my first language.

Doesn't seem like it is bad nonetheless.
Kay so here are the awnsers to ur questions.
1. Nope only need an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery.
Probably more steps cause its samsung but there are detailed guides here for your phone.
2. Hmm thats unfortunate cause when you trip knox you lose access to knoc enabled services like samsung pads.
3.well if i was rooted I would use Migrate which is a great backup app for switching between custom ROMs.

This thread lists a modified apk for the wearables app but im not sure if it works.
