I'm also looking for a Type C to HDMI cable, and I was wondering if the P30 Pro outputs at 60hz? (at 1080p or 4k?) The Kirin 980 looks good for PSP/Gamecube emulation and I'd like the emulators to run at full speed on my TV.
Will something like this be ok?

Picking up my P30 pro tomorrow and I will glad to see the back of this Sony, no MHL out and the headphone jack failed within a year.
I've got 2 'standard' amazon USB-C to HDMI adaptors, they all work great. If you're using it for occasional displaying then don't worry, but if you are hoping to use it longer term then get one that does PD passthrough

In the end I bought this Choetech USB C to HDMI cable. Used it to watch the football on my TV using the BT sport app and it worked perfectly. It is a massive step up from Mira/Chrome casting and has high wattage PD so that the phone charges quickly as well.
I'm going to add a few roms and emulators (PPSSPP, Damon PS2 & Dolphin) to my phone at some point and will see if I get 60fps on the TV and whether it outputs in 4k, but for £17 (I got an open box one for £13) it's a bargain.
I use mine for emulator gaming (admittedly on a 1080p screen) and it works great

Hi.
Can you test that cable with Netflix?
Best regards.
1920x1080 I believe is what it does. At least that's what the resolution of the screenshots are when you're in desktop mode. Desktop mode doesn't work with all apps. I tested it with a 4K monitor and 4K HDMI cable and 4K adapter, but it's not outputting 4K.

Hi I downloaded Netflix and started a trial with the UltraHD options.
The phone outputs Netflix in Full HD whilst in phone mode, but not 4k. It may well be outputting HDR via HDMI, but my TV only responds to HDR content from the USB port (thanks Sony) so I can't confirm this.
When in desktop mode, the audio comes through but the screen is black (apart from the navigation options and content warnings). This is a shame as when I use the BT Sport app it outputs video at the highest possible resolution with out issue. So Netflix via desktop mode is not possible, perhaps this could be escalated with Huawei and patched via software, I wouldn't know.
I also tested the UltraHD options via the Android TV app on my Sony TV and it worked flawlessly, although I will be uninstalling Netflix after my month because KODI.
Hope this helps.

Actually this modded version of the Netflix APK could be interesting, when I get home from work I might try this.

Even in desktop mode and only full hd netflix doesn't work? I don't use 4k because for now I don't have TV or monitor 4k.

hi, do u mind sharing your charging speed using Ampere apps on playstore? im using BASEUS with same 60W power delivery, but the charging speed is so low. your help will be grateful.tqsm!!
I use this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M61X8N3
Mainly for watching my own content on TVs in hotels. So far I have not had any issues.
I went for this one from Amazon
USB C Hub, WIMUUE 7 in 1 Aluminum Adapter with 100W Power Delivery, 4K HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 Ports, MicroSD, SD Card Reader USBC Dongle for MacBook Pro/Air Thunderbolt 3 Multiport Dock USB Type C Laptop: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
Free delivery and returns on eligible orders. Buy USB C Hub, WIMUUE 7 in 1 Aluminum Adapter with 100W Power Delivery, 4K HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 Ports, MicroSD, SD Card Reader USBC Dongle for MacBook Pro/Air Thunderbolt 3 Multiport Dock USB Type C Laptop at Amazon UK.

for about £20. Plugged it in and it worked straight off playing a film on a USB stuck into the hub using MXPlayer (on the phone) onto my TV via HDMI . Thought it was handier as my laptop doesn't have a microSD card reader so could use it on there too.... and get stuff onto or off my phone onto USB/microSD/SD. Happy chap! Ready for hotel visits now.

The exciting features of the Nexus 4 just keep on coming. It seems it will support a technology called SlimPort which allows you to use the micro USB to connect the phone to a second display via HDMI, DVI, VGA and DisplayPort.
The only connector available at present is for HDMI, which also charges the device while connected. Other connectors are to be released in the future.
Info from Engadget.
EDIT: New review from AnandTech. See below:
In my Nexus 4 review, I noted that the device was the first shipping handset to include support for SlimPort via an Analogix ANX7808 SlimPort transmitter. When I wrote that review it wasn't immediately clear what advantages SlimPort offered over MHL, which has become relatively ubiquitous in the year or so since its introduction. Since then I've acquired the SlimPort microUSB to HDMI 1.4 SP1002 and VGA (D-SUB) SP2002 adapters from Analogix for testing out SlimPort on the Nexus 4.
SlimPort is a new video output standard which works over microUSB, and is effectively an MHL alternative based on the DisplayPort standard administered by VESA. SlimPort is offered both license and royalty free, and supports up to 1080p60 or 1080p30 with 3D content over HDMI 1.4 (up to 5.4 Gbps of bandwidth), in addition to support for DVI, VGA (up to 1366x768 and 720p at 60 Hz), and DisplayPort. What's different about SlimPort from a user-facing perspective is that external microUSB power is not required for the adapter to work and is instead only required for optional charging. At the same time, the adapters draw no power from the source to operate.
I've spent some time playing around with the SP1002 HDMI adapter, which I believe is based on ANX7730, and the SP2002 VGA adapter, which is likely based on ANX9832. As of this writing, the Analogix SP1002 adapter is available on Amazon for around $30 USD. I haven't seen the SP2002 available online anywhere yet, however.
When connected to the Nexus 4, the HDMI adapter rotates the UI into landscape and mirrors the display just as expected. Resolution is scaled to 1080p60 on the Nexus 4 up from the panel resolution of 1280x768, which results in some letterboxing. As expected there's no requirement to have microUSB power connected to the adapter, I tested it with and without external microUSB power, all this does is just enable charging.
I posted a video review (shot on the Samsung Galaxy Camera) demonstrating the Nexus 4 doing mirroring with the SlimPort SP1002 adapter and received a query about whether the combo enables multichannel audio over HDMI as well. I tested VLC for Android with some .MKVs I had laying around with 5.1 AAC tracks and found that VLC will decode the multichannel audio and ship it over as 5.1 PCM to my A/V Receiver, so this does work, surprisingly enough. There's no bitstreaming support as far as I can tell, however. As an aside I was able to playback a number of 720p MKVs with hardware decoding checked in VLC for Android and 5.1 audio out with no dropped frames. The Nexus 4 seems to be a passable platform if you're looking to play the occasional 720p video over HDMI — provided you have the free storage for it.
I also tested out the SP2002 microUSB SlimPort to VGA adapter, which has a longer cable and correspondingly beefier module for accommodating the D-SUB connector on the end. I tried with a Dell G2410 LCD display and XGA resolution DLP projector and saw an output resolution of VGA (640x480 at 60 Hz), which wasn't quite what I expected. The SP2002 should work just fine with 720p60 over VGA, and I know both monitors expose the proper EDID, it seems as though the Nexus 4 just defaults to this mode. Just like the HDMI adapter there's a microUSB port on the back for optional charging, though the dongle doesn't require external power to operate.
Thus far I'm fairly impressed with SlimPort. I enjoyed discrete microHDMI connections on devices when that was the norm, though finding a microHDMI to HDMI cable was always the challenge. Later MHL seemed a step in the right direction, but requiring three cables to do display mirroring seemed like a bit much. With SlimPort I think we've finally arrived at something close to ideal with the standard not requiring external power to function. It will be interesting to see how SlimPort, MHL, and Miracast adoption fare in the coming year as mirroring to a larger display is in the cards as a convergence trend for smartphones and tablets.

Charges the device while it's connected? That's awesome!
I questioned that at first as well. If you follow the link to the adapter and look at the pics you'll notice that it has a USB input. I assume this has to be connected to charge the phone. As far as I'm aware HDMI doesn't carry power.
Only TVs with built in MHL HDMI Ports provide power.
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
I read that the adapter has to have a power source to work... I assume then that this additional micro USB input is to enable use with TV's that dont support MHL.
Nothing like this exists now? Intriguing concept.
Will this work without having the charger connected? It seems nearly identical to Samsung MHL adapters.
I bought one. It seems like the packaging said something about the micro usb port being optional if you want it to charge, but I threw that stuff away and don't have an N4 to test with.
I think the "HDTV Cable" on the SlimPort site is going to be a cable that's micro usb (SlimPort) on one side, and HDMI on the other without any power input.
I ordered one as well
Cant wait to try it

As funny as that sounds, that would actually be nice. I know it's not SlimPort, but I use a Monoprice MHL-HDMI adapter currently. It requires power to work. Unfortunately, it can't negotiate high current and the phone shows USB charge mode. But with the screen active, it ends up losing 10-100ma. I haven't researched the actual micro-usb pinout to see if video uses the usb data pins or what. If somehow it doesn't, I might be able to short them out and have it go into AC charge mode.
Or maybe the better MHL adapters actually do negotiation and do charge?
Either way, hopefully the initial feedback on the N4 is good enough that I can overlook the fixed battery and storage.

My MHL adapter charged my GS3 charged when watching the Avengers movie Samsung gave T-Mobile GS3 customers. It was a pretty slow charge, but prevented my battery from dying like it should have.
I think this would be a lot more appealing in dock form.
The cable+block adapters are always a bit awkward to connect up and actually use in my opinion.
Will an MHL adapter work? I was using one on my GS2 and want to know if I will be able to use it on my N4
the video on this page specifically says that no external power source is needed.

Mine arrived from Amazon yesterday but I can't get a picture on the TV, when I plug everything in the screen on the N4 rotates to landscape and the phone loses sound, all good so far. But when I select HDMI source on the TV I just get a black screen.
This is annoying because the S3 worked perfectly with the Samsung adaptor.

Is your TV set to the correct HDMI port?
Nexus4, Tapatalk
There are apparently 3 dongles out there being marketed with a male microusb and female hdmi output:
Can someone please provide clarity on which ones will work with the nexus 4? Specifically looking for someone to post results for example 1
1. Generic MicroUSB MHL dongle cable : these are sold on ebay and optionally have an extra female microusb on them for OTG or power. This one will NOT work on Galaxy S3 bc of pin change. Can someone report if this type works on Nexus 4? It would be the most affordable solution if so

2. Samsung SGS3 MHL dongle cable: bc of samsung pin change, this cable was specifically required for SGS3. - Reported not working on Nexus 4

3. Slimport microUSB cable - Reported working on Nexus 4, but pricey

Hi! This is my first post on xda-developers. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "question", bound for a Q&A...
I have an HTC One S (US, T-Mobile) for which I bought a cheap MHL adapter. The adapter plugs in to the phone's micro-USB port, has an HDMI out and requires you to plug the phone's charger into the adapter, providing charge to the phone. I'm pushing to an old monitor so the adapter's HDMI out goes through an HDMI to DVI adapter before reaching the display.
Everything is working fine except for video. It seems that no matter the video quality, the image constantly stutters. Neither the default video player nor MX Player (on H/W, H/W+, or S/W) will play more than a few seconds of video before locking up for several seconds, then only advancing a frame or two. There's no problem with video when not connected to the adapter. A fresh restart doesn't seem to help and I don't think I have any extra memory-hogging background apps (just the standard Sense and T-mobile apps).
Has anyone else had the same problem? My previous feature phone had a simple S-video out that let me show pictures and videos to my family while on holidays. Perplexing that I'm being outclassed by that old brick!
Thanks for any insights/advice!
No problems with my S and a MHL adapter (video is jerky cause it was recorded using a desire):
Skip to 1.53 for 1080P film playback
Give it a try on some other monitor/TV without the DVI adapter.
Also try BS player lite instead of MX player (although this most likely won't fix it as MX and stock should be perfectly fine)

Indeed, it works like a charm on a proper HD TV without the DVI adapter. Now I wonder if it's the adapter or the higher resolution of the monitor I'm plugging in to, and unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to control the output resolution from the phone. Perhaps it's using the highest available or perhaps it has to do some non-native scaling of the video.
Thanks for your help!

What is the res. of the monitor? You should be able to find out what res. it is running at once the phone is plugged in (should be a wee info. box that pops up stating res., refresh rate etc.)
I think it could just be the DVI/HDMI adapter causing problems.
No problem

If it doesn't say that it supports the one S, then don't buy it. It could/should work even if the one S is not listed but I rather not take the risk.

Thanks I get that one but from uk amazon lol.
Hi everyone,
Thought I would start a thread about what things people are using with their S4s.
A few findings of mine from today:
The Smart Dock works with the S4.
The S3/Note 2 MHL adapters definitely work
The S4 MHL 2.0 adapter works without needing a charging input plugged in and IS outputting at 60Hz
USB audio working, although some DACs not working that did work with S3/Note 2 (Apex Glacier not working for me, my HeadAmp Pico and RSA Intruder are)
USB keyboards/mice working with the S4, as they did with the older Samsungs
PS3 controller working over USB OTG (although mapping seems odd, have to try it in an emulator)
Ditto for the Xbox 360 for Microsoft controller (which required an app on older Samsungs in order to work)
Interesting, tried my Logitech F310 controller with it and it works too (it does not work with any other Android handset without USB/BT Joystick Centre, but here works OOTB). The F710 probably works too in that case.
BT keyboard and mouse working, as expected.
IR blaster via the inbuilt app works great with my LG TV.
Logitech F710 works too.
MHL and USB OTG do not work together using the new MHL 2.0 adapter for the S4.
NTFS formatted drives still don't work on stock ROMs. Shame since my Padfone Infinity has it OOTB.
Moga Pro gamepad working well
Tried an ethernet adapter yesterday evening: no-go. Need to check its documentation again because I suspect it requires driver installation. Have order a couple of driverless ethernet adapters that are confirmed to work with several Android tablets and will give them a go when they arrive.
Additional info on ethernet: can pretty much definitively say ethernet is not working I think. Tried today with a new adapter (that works perfectly on the Padfone Infinity in phone and pad modes, since I tried that first), does not work with S4 with or without an externally powered USB hub.
Will chime in with more when I have a chance to try more stuff out.
On the s4 MHL adapter: I find it amazing that the hdmi can carry plenty of juice to keep the s4 and the MHL adapter topped up on power. The knock off on sale at amazon still says to use external power.
Have you tried miracast yet?
BT Keyboard/mouse?
Hi, could someone please tell me if the Galaxy S4 and the new MHL 2.0 adapter allow HDMI and USB OTG at the same time using the micro usb port on the MHL 2.0 adapter? Very keen to know! Cheers!

First post updated, BT keyboard and mouse working as expected.
Not tried miracast yet.
IR blaster works a treat with my LG TV.
Definitely works without power with the S4, although it doesn't charge the phone at all used like that (unless of course you have an MHL-capable TV, I don't).

As noted above, doesn't work. Only way to do that simultaneously is still the Smart Dock.
I have a couple of questions.
1) Does the smart dock outputs 60Hz or this is achievable only with the mhl 2.0 adapter?
2) Is 60Hz mode noticeably better?
3) Any slowdowns or delays, while mirroring the display?
Thanks in advance.

I need to spend more time with it to answer those, will definitely update soon.
Regarding slowdowns - found it pretty smooth, which was a relief because the Xperia Z lagged horribly over MHL.
UPDATE:
1) Does the smart dock outputs 60Hz or this is achievable only with the mhl 2.0 adapter? Only the MHL 2.0 adapter can do 60Hz.
2) Is 60Hz mode noticeably better? Yes, compared them directly today, found scrolling webpages and so forth noticeably smoother on MHL 2.0.
Used a Moga Pro controller with my S4 to play some GTA while mirroring over MHL 2.0, nice! Still playing around with the Moga, but enjoying so far.

Imagine my surprise when I connected mine to my MS Surface pro. It was immediately recognized, nothing to install and I was able to browse contents of both internal storage and my microSD card!
Whats a recommended OTG cable to get ?
So, I recently bought a Sentio Superbook to play around with. It is essentially a dumbed-down laptop that connects to your phone via USB-C. Sentio has its own proprietary desktop experience software that runs on Android and then connects to your phone to present the Sentio Desktop on the Superbook via USB-C and DisplayLink. However, I wanted to use Dex as I find the Dex experience much better than the Sentio Desktop (or any other desktop experience software I have tried on Android). Plus i want to run Linux on Dex.
The problem is that I could not find a way to trigger Dex to run on my Note 9 unless it detects an HDMI connection, since that is the only way Dex will launch that i know of. Since the Superbook doesn't have an HDMI-in, only USB-C, Dex wouldn't fire off when connecting to the Superbook.
One night, after a few beers, I wondered if i could trick the Note 9 into thinking that there was an HDMI connection when there really wasn't one available. I already had a USB-C Hub with an HDMI port that i bought on Amazon. So, back to Amazon I went, where I ordered an HDMI Dummy Plug / Headless Display Emulator. These are used typically on headless (no monitor) remote servers, tricking the GPUs into thinking there is an external monitor connected via HDMI. So, i plugged the HDMI Emulator into the HDMI out port on the USB-C hub, then the USB-C hub into the phone, and Dex immediately launched. From there i connected the USB-C hub into the Superbook (via a USB-C to USB-C cable), and Dex was running on the Superbook.
If you look at the picture, you can see the Display Emulator sticking out of the USB-C hub, right at the corner of my phone. Sorry for the crappy picture, I took the photo with an old Nextbit Robin since the Note 9 was being used.

OK i found out about the HDMI dummy plug. I have another question then, do you need to give power to your type C hub?

See the image for how i have everything setup ... The main USB-C wire from the hub goes to the phone (top right corner of image), and then obviously I put the dummy HDMI plug into the HDMI port. Finally, where the image shows 'DC IN' is actually just another USB-C connection, so I run a USB-C to USB-C wire from here to the USB-C port on the Superbook.
The hub does not require additional power, it didn't need it when i used the hub to connect to a standard HDMI monitor, and it doesn't require it in this configuration either.
I made it

Ok i managed to do it, while im waiting for the dummy to arrive, i used an HDMI cable connected to a turned off monitor.
My type C hub needs power to function, it does also when i use DEX on monitor, so I had the hub powered on, the type-c connected to Note9, the usb-c to usb-c cable from SB to the hub and it worked. The only trick i had to use is to install and run the Display link presenter app, without that, it doesnt start.
How does it all work? Does it feel responsive? Touchpad works well?
Would love to get more details on the overall usability.
Very responsive

I would say its pretty much as using Dex on a monitor, I use a bluetooth mouse because the trackpad of the superbook is still not very responsive.
For the rest of the usage i can say no lag at all.
Im going to use Dex Max to watch netflix full screen and then i will be set.
Update on the setup
I just finished building this case for the dongle i created, as you can see in the picture, its still an early build but its a start.
Since im not a developer nor a engineer i had to use cables and adapters, and since my type-c hub needs power im giving it power form the usb of the superbook, while the type c get the video into the SB. I will later on create space for the USBs, or at least one of them.
Im open to ideas and/or help and suggestions.
Latest update on SBDX setup
Ok, i have made some changes and some updates on the external setup to have it as much portable as possible.

I've got a 1080p superbook coming this week along with a hub and HDMI dummy plug. I'll report back after I had a play. The whole set up cost about £115. Not including my 512gb Note9 that is!

Hi Cinnarello, which hub are you using. I had one that triggered DeX fine but without a PD port I couldn't charge it. I got another that had PD and a USB C but this time (despite being advertised as DeX compatible) it gave me a message "Ensure HDMI is connected properly" and I get no out put. I tried it with different cables and my wife's S9+ but it made no difference.

Great, just ordered one. I wonder why that item isn't available in the UK? Luckily I am still a citizen of the EU, at least for the the next couple of weeks, so I could order from amazon.it. Grazie.
Got the dock and connected it all up and everything works. I'm replying on the Superbook! It came just in time as I had to pass my laptop to my son last night as his bust.
I got the same setup, however the touchpad doesn't work at all.
Also keyboard is being a pain. The "l" key keeps firing off randomly.
Il will lintllentilonallyl nlolt lcolrrlect this selntlenclel to slholwll what I lmlean.

Yeah, that. Will need to test if it's my SB that's screwed up or not by running the Sentio App, OR using a USB keyboard.
Item question
Hello Cinnarello,
Can you tell where you bought the item that attaches your smartphone to the Superbook ?
Thanks.
Have a nice day.

See the item he links to in post #11. I got the same one and it works great.
Hi
Thx for answer.
I'm not talking about the Hub but about the plastic item located between screen edge and smartphone, plastic item that holds both of them.
Thx. Cheers.

Grazie! I bought a really small hub that I was happy to find, but only upon arrival did I find out that the usb-c on the hub was only for power. I ordered one like yours now :cyclops:
Just a fair bit of warning about this company:

Hi,
Easier to make one using a Pi-Top V2 and a few components off of Amazon or buy one of these when they are available.

The DeX laptop dock you mention actually is a Sentio Superbook. Somehow his works without using a USB-C dock?
AH man what disappointment tried my USB C hub with HDMI and nothing quick google search and you need a MHL adaptor what a step back
do they even make USB C MHL adaptor adapters
takes me back to my note 3 - 4 days those adapter can't even keep phone charging while consuming power as far as I remember it was and issue back then they only charge in "USB charging" mode speed 500 ma or less
have they advance with USB C ??

I do see MHL to HDMI cables on Amazon. But I am not sure if any of them work. I am personally looking for one so I can use it in the car so my kids can watch what I mirror off my A71 5g.
If anyone comes across a cable that works, please let me know. TIA

You shouldn't be too surprised if you're looking for old technology and get flashbacks of your old devices, what do you expect? I remember cables was a thing on my S3..
Its 2020, not 2012, who uses wires when we can easily go wireless? Spend that money you're wanting to buy wires with on a cheap Chromecast if your TV doesn't already have it built in. You can get a used one for like under $10, $5 probably.. I can sell you my 1st gen CC, for $5 if you want..
Then look for the "cast" feature in settings and there you go. That let's you cast a video on your TV screen while you can be doing something totally different on your phone, like browsing the web or something. Now if you want to mirror your phone screen so the exact image appears on the TV, thats possible too..
This may not help the individual question, however, it may provide info for someone.
I have casted my Note 8 using a Chrome Cast and Roku. The Roku Ultra worked much better as there was no lag.
I also cast movies from my PC Windows 10 to my Smart TV via Web/Internet and that works great. Problem with Roku is that Roku does not support AVI format movies. So, I can play AVI movies from my Note 8 or PC to the TV.
