HTC U11+ charging issues - HTC U11+ Questions & Answers

I have an HTC U11+ which I believe is from Malaysia and am running Android 8.0.0. It seems with the latest update I received a few things have happened, some good and some not too good. The not so good is now all the chargers/cables I use make the phone show a screen stating the charger or cable being used is incompatible. The phone stops charging to prevent damage. But the led is on, battery icon is greyed out. I believe the last update I received is possibly the problem because since I've had the phone (7 months now) I've used the same chargers/cables with no issues. Some of the things I've tried were using stock charger and cable. Clearing cache partition after update. Cleaning/checking charge port for debris. I take very good care of my phones and I'm almost certain it's not the charging port that's damaged. Has anyone else had this problem or similar issues Any help would be appreciated.
***update*** so I'm leaning more towards a software thing because I tested another charger today. My old htc one m9 charger. It's rates at 1.5A and 200mA, compared to the stock charger and ugreen quick charger which are both 3.0 and 500mA. It seems that the phone isn't recognizing the higher charge rate. I'm going to call HTC again and see if they can tell me anything else. If I can't get anywhere with them, I will be forced to wait for the next update.

Can't charge from 2.1 amp chargers anymore

I recently (finally) updated my Verizon GS3 to the newest OTA TouchWiz KitKat ROM and since then my phone won't charge from my 2.1 amp car chargers. I have been using the same 2.1 amp car charger and USB cable for years and had no trouble until installing this update. I didn't even notice at first. I eventually realized that my battery percentage was lower when I got home than when I left work, after being plugged in the whole drive home. I noticed the battery icon in the notification bar has a red x on it when plugged into the car charger but when I plug it into a wall charger it gets the little lightning bolt on the battery icon, regardless of which wall charger I use. I have a 6-port USB wall charger with a total output of 6 amps (2x 2.1 amp and 4x 1 amp) and my phone charges just fine from the 2.1 amp port on it. I tried a different USB cable in the car and it made no difference. I figured there must be a problem with my car charger, so I bought a new one. This one is a 3.1 amp 2-port charger with a designated 2.1 amp port and a 1 amp port. If I plug into the 1 amp port my phone will charge and I get the lightning bolt on the battery icon. If I plug into the 2.1 amp port it gets the red x on the icon. Either way, the LED on my phone turns red, which is how it is set for when it is charging and then turns green when it get 100% charged. My battery is OEM too. I really have no idea what is causing this but it is very annoying. I want my phone to charge faster, especially when I'm on the go. The only thing I can think of is that the phone can now tell, somehow, what charger it's connected to and will only accept certain 2.1 amp chargers. Does anyone know why this is happening?
TL;DR: Why won't my phone charge from 2.1 amp car chargers anymore, after upgrading to KitKat?
It's a software issue on verizons end. My gf had to replace hers at least 4 times for this same issue. VZW managed to screw up the 4.4.2 update. All they can do to fix it is offer you a replacement device

If it's a software bug, what good is a replacement if it has the same software? Would they give me a newer device as a replacement? I'm off contract and don't want to lose my unlimited data plan and I can't afford full retail price for a new phone but I have been wanting a new phone for a while. This could be my opportunity to get a new phone. I'll have to contact Verizon support and ask.

It's worth a shot, I'm not sure if they will or not. They didn't seem too quick to help my gf and offered no real solution. There's a slight possibility that a replacement phone will actually work right and I get the out of contract and unlimited data, I once was an unlimited data customer myself

[Q] Charging--5sec-->Not Charging

My nexus 5 went to 0% battery one night and died. I tried charging it with 4 different chargers, some with usb some outlet and a wireless charger to no avail. I then purchased 2 new batteries and the phone was able to turn on with the replacement ones. However they would not charge. On the battery status screen it would go from saying Charging (on AC or USB depending on how i was trying to charge it) for 5~ seconds to saying Not Charging. The charging icon was still on the little toolbar battery icon but it would not charge. So those two new batteries are dead :good:. So I thought maybe software issue, I had enough juice to get in the bootloader and flash back to 4.4.4 which would still not allow it to charge. Then I started flashing to other versions and eventually back to 5.1.1 to no avail. I replaced the charging port with one from my brothers nexus 5 and it still would not work. My battery and charging port worked in his phone however.
Now I don't know what to do! This is the first phone I've really had to research about bootloaders and roms and stuff so I'm fresh.
TL;DR: Phone goes from charging for 5 sec to not charge with different software versions (4.4.4, 5.1.1 +more), with many different chargers (including one that came with phone), with new battery and new charging port.
Thanks.
Mine did that with a new battery also. The new battery was a dud--I contacted the seller, who sent me another battery, and that one does charge.

I've tried 3 different batteries including my brothers nexus 5 battery which charges in his phone so I am confident its not a battery issue now.

if the actual USB port is working on ur brother's and so is the battery, i am afraid then u have a bad Motherboard...
theres a Texas Instruments BQ24192 I2C controller chip, that is what regulates charging, such as voltage, etc...
if it doesnt even respond to wireless charging, that may be bad https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016#s53734
that would be my guess....
Well technically it responds to it but it only lasts for a few seconds. Wireless charging and wired charging get a response from the phone by changing it to say charging on ac or usb or whatever but it just goes back to saying not charging after ~5 seconds. Is this still a bad mother board you think? Is it worth it to try and purchase a motherboard or just get a new phone?
Any solution for this? Came later but did come to this problem.

Wireless Charging issue Sprint s8 plus

I thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone else has seen the issue. I am on my second s8 plus that has lost the ability to charge wirelessly. I am only using Samsung based chargers and have seen the issue from the 1 st gen slow charger to the latest that was released with the S8. The device was charging fine at first and then after a few days it stopped all together. I have tried all the known fixes including trying a shorter USB3 cable from the power brick to a hard reset of the device itself. All options for fast charging have been disabled and tested with no change in the wireless charge state. I even went as far as swapping out the new Sammy wireless fast charger I picked up at best buy to make sure there was not an issue with that. When placing the phone on a wireless charger there is no prompt to show connection or even the issue where the wireless charging would connect and then disconnect. It just will not charge on any wireless charger. Charging via USB port is not an issue. I was wondering if the latest update that fixed the red tint was the culprit but I did not allow my replacement device to update at first to test. Sure enough it started doing the same thing after a few days.
Has anyone else seen this? I am due to swap over to a third device tomorrow afternoon. The sprint techs I have been working with have sent the first device to one of the Samsung engineers they have been working with.
Thanks.
Mine did this after a few days. My fix was just to restart the phone. It seems after a few wireless pauses a safety feature keeps it from charging again

Anyone else having PD "Rapid Charge" Issues with Android Pie (9)?

Post Android Pie update I've noticed issues with the PD rapid charging. The original usb-c cable that came with the phone no longer works but I had no issues with the replacements but now occasionally I have to unplug/replug or reboot my phone in order for it to activate the "rapid charge" mode. I've tested this at various battery levels, power supply's and in general it doesn't seem to activate like it used to. My 3rd party Auckley charger was great but now I get more out of the 2.4A USB-A port than the USB-C PD/QC port.
I've heard the rapid charge feature hasn't been working correctly on Pixel's post update and was wondering if the causes were related? I'm hoping Essential responds to my concerns and if the issue is widespread issues a fix.

I did a clean install of P and I am not having issues.
Factory and 3rd party cables and chargers work fine.
Similar problem here except OEM cable works fine; 3rd party cables are having the problems you describe.

I suspect some 3rd party stuff is not really PD capable.
3rd Party VS OEM
I accept that some 3rd Party stuff may not be up to the same standards as OEM stuff but they (different USB-C cables) worked before the update and stopped after... If it was a single type/set up I would accept that as the cause but in this case it has happened with several different ones so I'm thinking it's a broader issue.

There is a handshake protocol and maybe there is a more strict adherence to the handshake?
I'm experiencing the same issue. Some PD chargers work; some do not. I just got my PH-1, so I'd never charged it prior to Pie.
Make sure your PD charger can do 9v and 12v for fast charge.

Finally yes I have this issue almost thrice a week dunno what causes it considering to factory reset.
got the same issue I have to plug in and pull out the cable one, two, three times until fast charging works!
Same issue... Using ampere to test and a few cables as well.. same issue.
I have some issue, how to fix it?
i'm going to revive this thread quick. Just got a Aukey PA-D1 (https://www.aukey.com/products/dual-port-30w-pd-wall-charger-with-dynamic-detect) and a matching type c-type c cable from them. plug the phone in and it goes from charging slowly, to rapidly, then drops completely, then restarts that whole sequence over and over. usually a restart will fix it, but its every time i plug it in. has anyone found an answer as to why this does this?
btw, running latest android 9, with june patch....
It happens to me only with power bank that supports PD.
It says charging slowly, normal, rapidly and disconnect.
Tried it with Galaxy s8, Galaxy note 8, lg g6 and it charge them great, without disconnect and with speed charge.
Also tried few cables, original cable and 3rd party who supports PD charge.

This has happened to me since I've owned the phone on one of my car chargers I own. It's just that one charger too. Issue has survived one RMA and multiple cables being used. In general I just plug it in and check in couple minutes to make sure it says fast charging and if not, unplug and replug it in.
Who knows if it's the charger's fault or essentials fault. I'm kinda leaning essential because it works just fine on my wife's pixel but the pixel is much more "understanding" in general when it comes to chargers (like it seems to fast charge on qc 3.0 too).
Anyone on Q beta seeing this?
I have been seeing this issue with 3rd party charger for months. I am wondering if anyone who has tried Q beta saw this issue resolved in Q beta.

My understanding is Quick Charge is broken...
So if the wallwart supports QuickCharge in anyway... It's trouble...
It has been that way for me on every iteration and security patch going back to 11/17 or so...
Somewhere... Way deep in the forum covered by ETA requests and useless banter... There's an article linked about how the PH-1 requests too much voltage from QuickCharge and forces it to reset...
This is an issue at the hardware level... And the only workaround is to make sure your charge brick does not support QC at all

Just figured I'd chime in as well. I'm experiencing the "Charging / Charging Slowly / Charging Rapidly" issue with my USB-C Car charger. One a Verizon branded and one an Anker branded. I know the Anker one is a "Q.C." one because it says it right on the device - but with the Q.C. enabled one, I only get "Charging Slowly" on it (so slow in fact, that the battery actually drains on the device). With the Verizon charger, I get the "charging loop".
Q beta 4 resolved this issue for me but it's back on both beta 5 and 6 . I've tried the OEM charger, a Nexus 6p charger, a OnePlus 7 charger and a Samsung Galaxy note 9 charger. They all cycle between charging slowly/ charging/ charging rapidly and not charging.
Has absolutely nothing to do with third party cables not being up to Power Delivery specification (at least in my extensive experience with this God-forsaken no end in sight charge speed bug. I've had absolutely asinine experiences with it myself where I've routinely {more than 25% of the time) had under 1000ma upon fresh plug in with battery below 30%. Also worth noting that I've seen the problem albeit less often pop up with USB a to c cables and ports as well.

Android 10 Charging Issues

I have a T-Mobile OnePlus 7 Pro that I converted to the international firmware and recently got Android 10. Everything has mostly been good except since the upgrade I've noticed that a lot of the power adapters I have around the house just aren't charging the device. I'll plug my phone in and the battery icon will show a charging symbol, but the lock screen won't show that it's charging. Curiously, I have my phone set to display a clock as a screensaver only when charging, and that will activate when plugged in, so the phone definitely thinks it's charging. Two of the chargers were from my old Pixel 2 XL, and over the weekend I bought a third, brand new charger that initially seemed to work but I woke up this morning and my phone hadn't charged at all. Tried multiple outlets in the house and it's the same story. I have the Warp Charger at my desk at work and haven't had any issues with that.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I am experiencing this too. As are a few others on the OP Community forums. If you look into the battery settings it will say "plugged in- can't charge" or something like that. With the USB plugged in and rebooting the device it will start charging. Others have said a roll-back to Pie will fix the issue, but other than that no solution yet. I think the issue has been more with alternative cables. Using the stock brick and cable should work still.
I am having the same issue. My MacBook and pixel chargers used to charge my phone but as the person above mentioned now says my phone is plugged in and unable to charge. So it essentially maintains the phone at the same percentage indefinitely.
Using the original OnePlus charger works. I'm assuming this is a bug OnePlus needs to work out with Android 10 as this wasn't the case with Pie.
I'm in the same boat. It's driving me NUTS. The same USB C cables worked just fine on Pie. Now it's almost every single time I plug my phone in it says "Plugged in, but can't charge" or something like that.
Here how I fixed the problem on my Oneplus 7 pro running android 10
Same thing happened to me. It was very annoying, so I test many usb cables. I found out that the issue is with the usb cables not from the charger.
So I enabled developer options, and I went to the debugging section and I enabled USB debugging option. And all the USB cables started working and my phone started charging ?.
I turned off the USB debugging and it's still charging.
Hope this method will work with you guys.
I had assumed it had something to do with Android 10's new features regarding USB security and preventing USB based attacks and exploits, but I figured that Android would show some notification about it being turned on whenever USB was plugged in. At least I know I'm not alone in this, I was scared my phone might have been going bad.
