Anyone else having PD "Rapid Charge" Issues with Android Pie (9)? - Essential Phone Accessories
Post Android Pie update I've noticed issues with the PD rapid charging. The original usb-c cable that came with the phone no longer works but I had no issues with the replacements but now occasionally I have to unplug/replug or reboot my phone in order for it to activate the "rapid charge" mode. I've tested this at various battery levels, power supply's and in general it doesn't seem to activate like it used to. My 3rd party Auckley charger was great but now I get more out of the 2.4A USB-A port than the USB-C PD/QC port.
I've heard the rapid charge feature hasn't been working correctly on Pixel's post update and was wondering if the causes were related? I'm hoping Essential responds to my concerns and if the issue is widespread issues a fix.

I did a clean install of P and I am not having issues.
Factory and 3rd party cables and chargers work fine.
Similar problem here except OEM cable works fine; 3rd party cables are having the problems you describe.

I suspect some 3rd party stuff is not really PD capable.
3rd Party VS OEM
I accept that some 3rd Party stuff may not be up to the same standards as OEM stuff but they (different USB-C cables) worked before the update and stopped after... If it was a single type/set up I would accept that as the cause but in this case it has happened with several different ones so I'm thinking it's a broader issue.

There is a handshake protocol and maybe there is a more strict adherence to the handshake?
I'm experiencing the same issue. Some PD chargers work; some do not. I just got my PH-1, so I'd never charged it prior to Pie.
Make sure your PD charger can do 9v and 12v for fast charge.

Finally yes I have this issue almost thrice a week dunno what causes it considering to factory reset.
got the same issue I have to plug in and pull out the cable one, two, three times until fast charging works!
Same issue... Using ampere to test and a few cables as well.. same issue.
I have some issue, how to fix it?
i'm going to revive this thread quick. Just got a Aukey PA-D1 (https://www.aukey.com/products/dual-port-30w-pd-wall-charger-with-dynamic-detect) and a matching type c-type c cable from them. plug the phone in and it goes from charging slowly, to rapidly, then drops completely, then restarts that whole sequence over and over. usually a restart will fix it, but its every time i plug it in. has anyone found an answer as to why this does this?
btw, running latest android 9, with june patch....
It happens to me only with power bank that supports PD.
It says charging slowly, normal, rapidly and disconnect.
Tried it with Galaxy s8, Galaxy note 8, lg g6 and it charge them great, without disconnect and with speed charge.
Also tried few cables, original cable and 3rd party who supports PD charge.

This has happened to me since I've owned the phone on one of my car chargers I own. It's just that one charger too. Issue has survived one RMA and multiple cables being used. In general I just plug it in and check in couple minutes to make sure it says fast charging and if not, unplug and replug it in.
Who knows if it's the charger's fault or essentials fault. I'm kinda leaning essential because it works just fine on my wife's pixel but the pixel is much more "understanding" in general when it comes to chargers (like it seems to fast charge on qc 3.0 too).
Anyone on Q beta seeing this?
I have been seeing this issue with 3rd party charger for months. I am wondering if anyone who has tried Q beta saw this issue resolved in Q beta.

My understanding is Quick Charge is broken...
So if the wallwart supports QuickCharge in anyway... It's trouble...
It has been that way for me on every iteration and security patch going back to 11/17 or so...
Somewhere... Way deep in the forum covered by ETA requests and useless banter... There's an article linked about how the PH-1 requests too much voltage from QuickCharge and forces it to reset...
This is an issue at the hardware level... And the only workaround is to make sure your charge brick does not support QC at all

Just figured I'd chime in as well. I'm experiencing the "Charging / Charging Slowly / Charging Rapidly" issue with my USB-C Car charger. One a Verizon branded and one an Anker branded. I know the Anker one is a "Q.C." one because it says it right on the device - but with the Q.C. enabled one, I only get "Charging Slowly" on it (so slow in fact, that the battery actually drains on the device). With the Verizon charger, I get the "charging loop".
Q beta 4 resolved this issue for me but it's back on both beta 5 and 6 . I've tried the OEM charger, a Nexus 6p charger, a OnePlus 7 charger and a Samsung Galaxy note 9 charger. They all cycle between charging slowly/ charging/ charging rapidly and not charging.
Has absolutely nothing to do with third party cables not being up to Power Delivery specification (at least in my extensive experience with this God-forsaken no end in sight charge speed bug. I've had absolutely asinine experiences with it myself where I've routinely {more than 25% of the time) had under 1000ma upon fresh plug in with battery below 30%. Also worth noting that I've seen the problem albeit less often pop up with USB a to c cables and ports as well.

[Solved] USB only charging with third-party chargers
[Solution if you are facing USB-only charging with third-party AC chargers on your Nexus 5] Hi Guys, Initially, my Nexus 5 ONLY charged at USB mode with any other charger than the one supplied. I tried 5 chargers including the Trent 2.1A car charger and BB PlayBook high-speed charger. I also tries using the supplied USB cable with another charger but it was a slow-go. Then, I noticed my buddy's N5 did not exhibit this problem. My only solution was to reset the phone, log back in and charge with the supplied charger to 100%. Then, it magically started to show AC charging with other charges. I wanted to share this with others in case they faced the same situation and were considering RMA due to hardware. Kit Kat still have way too many bugs. (Settings is constantly crashing in the battery menu when I plug the charge in and out on two of our N5s.)

Click to collapse Thanks, I'll try reseting my Nexus 5 when I get home. Although, I havent been able to charge it using any charger not sure if the battery life is reporting correctly too. When you first saw the issue with yours not charging using the cable and ac adapter that came with your Nexus 5 did you happen to notice if your device was still asking you to connect the charger or not? Mine is still telling me I need to connect the charger or cable, even though I have my USB plugged into the device. I can send commands to the phone fine using adb or fastboot, just wont charge.
Unfortunately your trick didn't work for me with my N5. My N5 charges off of SOME chargers (The N4, N5, N7 2012, and Samsung 2.1 Chargers, as well as my EasyACC 1200 battery pack, only port 1.3 volt, all others show as USB.) My car charger fails, Duracell 2 USB port with 2A output, and so does every other battery pack that I own fail with charging. All report USB Mode. I think it has to do with the Quickcharge 2.0 or possibly the fact that this has G2 innards to an extent. The G2 has quite a few chargers reporting as "Slow Charge" rather than "Fast Charge." Quite Irksome but I suspect it will be resolved with an update soon. To confirm that it wasn't a hardware problem of my N5, I borrowed a Coworker's N5 and experienced the same thing on my chargers. dextroz said: [Solution if you are facing USB-only charging with third-party AC chargers on your Nexus 5] Hi Guys, Initially, my Nexus 5 ONLY charged at USB mode with any other charger than the one supplied. Click to collapse I returned my first nexus 5 to google because it did not charge unless it was with the original charger. I tried it with the USB charging port on my radio and also a sony USB cable + plug combo and the charge was terribly slow. I have a nexus 4 and 7 and they had no issues charging this way so thought it was a fault with the handset. When I received my replacement I was really hoping this issue was resolved but sadly not. The second handset had the same issue. I then researched online and came across this forum post. I reset the handset, charged it to 100% with the cable and plug provided with the phone. Just to be on the safe side I discharged the handset fully and charged it to 100% again. The same fault reoccured. I then compared my nexus 5 to my 4 and 7. When charging the 4 and 7 through my radio, it showed charging via AC on the battery properties on the handset. The 5 in the same situation showed charging via USB. I then tried to charge my 5 using an emergency charger I had lying about and to my surprise, that charged fine showing as AC charging. I then took the USB cable from the emergency charger and plugged it into my radio's charged port. It showed AC again and charged as normal. I then used the original USB cable I always plug into the radio into the outlet of emergency charger too and that showed AC on the phone too. I don't really have a conclusion to why this it charges fine with one power source and cable and not another as there seems to be no logic to this. I think the nexus 5 is really picky how it likes to be charged. I can't see why this phone is soo finiky charging when all my other devices charge fine regardless where and how. I am now worried that if I'm at work or out and about and need an emergency top up my handset won't charge. I really hope this is a software fix
G5 won't quick charge
I've had the G5 for a few weeks and I still have never been able to charge it past 1000 mA. With this phone, the speeds should be way past thay. Anyone know what the reason could be or solutions? I've tried the stock g5 charger and two other chargers I got from Amazon and still no change.
How long does it take to get from 1% to 100%? For the QC to kick in the screen must be turned off. And did you tried a factory reset? Sent from my LG-H850 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I noticed that after updating my G%, oneof my QuickCharge 3.0 chargers stopped working. I also noticed a warning. It seems that an update disables quick charging if it doesn't deen the cable good enough... I use a benson approved usb c so i dont see what the problem is.
Yes you must have the correct charger and cable for quick charge to work
Try pulling out the battery and disconnecting it from the module. Reattach to the module and secure it firmly back in the phone. Sometimes there's a loose connection with the actual battery. Ive had an issue where the phone wouldn't quick charge two different times and this fixed it.
Pixel won't charge until rebooted.
I'm experiencing a weird issue with my Pixel. Occasionally, I'll plug the phone into the OEM charger and it won't charge at all. Trying different outlets doesn't solve the issue but as soon as I reboot the phone and plug it in, it charges just fine. It's a strange issue I haven't encountered with any previous phone. Curious if others have experienced this?

Woke up to 35% this morning plugged into stock charger not charging. Plugged into an Anker Power Port 4 and viola' it charges. Found this thread, rebooted and stock charger works again. Verizon on build NDE63X. Don't know when the update came down.
Exactly the same ^^^
I had an issue where no charger could be reversed in my phone. The C cable would only charge it in one orientation. I RMAd the phone and got a new one. Now, I have this same issue where the phone will charge and stop a few times and then start charging with the OEM brick and cable. Works fine with the OEM brick and a different cable I got from Amazon. Even works fine with the OEM cable and my computer with a USB C port. I think it might be the OEM brick.
Just had this issue happen to me for the first time today. OEM charger, won't charge until I reboot the phone. When I use my samsung fast charging brick no issues.
Brand new pixel 128gb... Charged fine with the USB a-c charger but got this weird issue with the stock charger and cable ... Phone is only 2 days old... Seems software related... As stated... Reboot fixes it... I notice most people on Google issued pixels were fixed in last update... Maybe Verizon is behind on this Verizon pixel build nde63x...
Mine has done this also. It was a problem on the Verizon build. I have since unlocked the bootloader and gone to the Google latest version and it still has the issue. I asked a friend if he had this issue and he said no but he had that issue on his Nexus phone.
I think the OEM charger is too loose. I've had that issue before (at work). Plug it in, it looks like it's charging, check it a few mins later and its not. If I push the cable in firmly it'll charge. I have a Samsung USB C adapter that I've been using with one of my old chargers (at home) and I haven't had a single issue with it. I ordered 10 cheap USB C adapters off eBay. I'm hoping they work just as well. I have a bunch of Turbo chargers that I've accumulated from other phones so hopefully I can convert all of them and keep using them.... Rapid charging in car stopped working
Has Google made a recent change in Android 9 that addresses the reported Pixel charging issues? I ask because, up to today, my Pixel 2 has always displayed Charging rapidly when plugged into the USB ports on my '18 Subaru Outback (I've been on Android 9 since the initial release). But today, it came up displaying just Charging. I tried both USB ports and two known-good cables with no luck. Back at home, it still shows rapid charging with the OEM charger and off of a USB 3.0 port on my PC. Is this possibly a case of Google fixing one thing and breaking another? It seems strange that something would fail in the car that would affect how rapidly it charges. I have no idea what charging standard is being used.
Weird charging issue when using third-party USB Power Delivery charger
Hi, I'm having this weird charging issue with my Pixel 2. It happened right after I updated to November patch. I am using the Tronsmart U5P charger, it has one USB-C port which supports 30W Power Delivery. Since November patch, sometimes when I try to charge my phone, the lightning icon will appear in the battery icon then immediately disappear and appear again. This repeats on and on and the phone won't charge. What makes it weird is that this issue happens randomly. Sometimes it charges normally, sometimes this issue occurs. I have tried many cables: The cables that originally came with Pixel 1 and Pixel 2, Genuine Apple USB-C cable. All of these have this issue. You might think that this is the problem with the charger, but I also have Aukey power bank that supports Power Delivery and it sometimes has this problem too! Moreover, if I use the original adapter that came with the phone, no problem at all. It charges normally every time. I have tried rebooting into Safe Mode and it didn't help. What I haven't tried is factory reset. I don't know if Google would offer a replacement unit for issue like this because using the original charger works normally. Anyone using third-party USB-PD charger? Do you have this issue? Please share. Thanks.
Have you tried cleaning out your charging port with tweezers, qtips, compressed air, etc?
