Last-minute requirements check - Is the Pixel 3 right for me? - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

I saw there is a sale on the PIxel 3 ending today. I've been looking for a new phone, but have problems finding a flagship phone that meets my requirements:
1) Unlocked (carrier and bootloader)
2) Rootable
3) Supports T-Mobile, including Band 71
4) Supports Voice over Wi-Fi and VoLTE on T-Mobile
5) Supports tethering (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) on T-Mobile
6) Fast Charging: USB-C Power Delivery or QC fast charge. Bonus points for wireless charging.
Samsung S9 family fails on #1 and 2. S9 SM-G9600 version passes 1 & 2, but fails on 3.
OnePlus 6T (and presumably 7) fails on # 6.
Does the Pixel 3 meet all requirements 1-6? I think so, but I want to ask the experts here to confirm.

PH-1 has Alternate Mode over Type C = watch movies over USB to a monitor

I just tested for Alternate mode over Type-C, to test for audio and video over DisplayPort. BINGO!
What we need
1. Essential PH-1 phone - Android version 7.1.1 - with screen rotation enabled on the phone
i. Tap and hold on the Home Screen
ii. Click - Settings
iii. Enable "Allow Home screen rotation"
i. Settings - Display - When device is rotated - Rotate the contents of the screen
2. USB Type C 3.1 cable capable of 5 amps support (can supply up to 100W power)
see https://plus.google.com/+BensonLeung/posts/eqJQbujcikq
May or may not work with a Type C 3.1 cable capable of only 3 amps. Don't have a cable to try.
Will not work with a Type C USB 2.0 cable - typical charging cable - not enough wires in the cable
I believe there is total of 6 different USB Type C cables available, the 3 listed below, with either 3 amp or 5 amp features
i. USB 2.0
ii. USB 3.1 Gen 1 - up to 5 Gbps
iii. USB 3.1 Gen 2 - up to 10 Gbps
3. A monitor with a USB Type-C 3.1 input - LG 4K Ultrafine Monitor
Don't have any knowledge, with respect to Thunderbolt 3 input monitors
e.g. LG 5k Ultrafine Monitor
Not all phones have a USB Type C with 3.1, Gen 1 or Gen 2. Most have only USB Type C 2.0 - cheaper components
Enjoy!
Does the Essential support a USB-C --> HDMI connection?
I think that some do, and obviously the iPhones have simple Lightning to HDMI connectors...

Yes it does. I even tested a USB-C --> VGA cable at work the other day and it worked fine.
Anyone got a link to a USB-C-->HDMI connector that they know works with this phone?
That was a real bummer with the Pixel line, that they don't support HDMI output at all. I am glad that this one does. Now I just need to know which connector to buy from Amazon...

I just ordered this:

I will let you guys know how it works.
This phone just keeps aging better and better, company did things right with the hardware. Very good news

Ok, that USB-C>HDMI adapter that I listed above from Amazon, works like a champ! Just plug it in and go, your phone's display instantly pops up on the monitor or TV.

Thanks; looks ideal for short uses only as you can't charge simultaneously.

Essential PH-1 with Samsung Dex Station
Hi All,
My Essential PH-1 works perfectly with the Genuine Samsung Dex Station as long as you use the Essential or Samsung Adaptive Charger cable connected to the dock.
The only item I could not get working consistently was the Ethernet connection - but all else worked perfectly.
HDMI out a 4K resolution (2160P)
2 x USB 2.0 ports
Quick Charge while docked ....
Temperatures remained stable at around 45-55 degrees Celsius while driving the external display.

Now all I need is a reliable Lineage 14.1 OS port with the Auxens OXI desktop embedded for this phone to easily rival my S8 in overall functionality and performance. The Sentio app I am using now is good - but not 100% there yet as it doesn't handle the screen properly due to the camera notch ... and the DPI settings are a bit wonky - but do work.

Auxens OXI looks pretty sweet. Is someone working on a Lineage port w/Auxens OXI or is that just a wish list request?

If you're wanting this functionality and are not on Oreo yet, wait to upgrade. Just got this nice detailed response from Samantha @ Essential CS: "While the Essential phone does support this capability, please note that DisplayPort™ is currently only working on devices with Android Nougat, not Android Oreo 8.0. Although the Essential phone is currently running on Android Nougat, we have plans to release Oreo 8.0 within the next several weeks. This is an developer issue across all devices, so unfortunately we can't control when a software fix will be implemented."

Yeah I bought the Belinda USB c HDMI adapter as linked to from Amazon and it works for like 2 minutes but then randomly cuts off totally. I'm unfortunately on Oreo b3.
Anyone who was using this before on nougat, test this on Pie? Not sure if this was covered or not.

Pie does support it. If you have access to another adapter, I'd test it on the Essential. My PH-1 had faulty hardware preventing HDMI output last spring. I had to get it replaced to get it to work.

Brand new Google Pixel?

Hi. I just bought a brand new (at least I think It's brand new) Google Pixel 128GB (G2-PW4100) from a well known online store here in Norway. The phone wasn't listed as refurbished or anything like that, but it was a bit suspicious that a) the phone didn't come with the original wall charger, instead it came with some chinese charger with an EU plug (wouldn't it make more sense if they just had included an EU adapter together with the original charger instead?), and b) the phone came preloaded with Android Oreo (version 8.0.0, not 8.1) out of the box? My serial number is FA76X, so can anyone tell me when my phone was manufactured? June 2017? ps. I am able to unlock my bootloader (OEM unlocking option in developer options is NOT greyed out). Thanks.

Glad to see someone else from Norway. I'm from Bergen myself (but living in Sweden )
Everything you've gotten is all right. Since Google doesn't sell Pixel phones to scandinavia they are imported from partners and that's why they needed to change the charger to be able to sell them in scandinavian stores. The phone you got is good from the serial number to judge. Phones produced in 2016 are prone to get a hardware problem affecting sound and microphone. You'll not have that since your's produced in 2017. All is good, enjoy your phone!

USB C to Hdmi ???

Does anyone one know if the new Pixel 3a supports this or screen mirroring??? Its been my biggest set back from getting these phone and saw that its said USB 3.1 which supports it, so Im hopefull.
No hard confirmation yet. I'm sure SomeGadgetGuy will give a proper update at some point just not sure when we can expect it
No, the Pixel 3a is USB 2.0, not 3.1 (you can check Google's page for the device).
One of the previous threads did point out that the last Google sponsored phone which supported HDMI output was indeed the Nexus 5. At the time around the Nexus 5X/6P, it could've been argued that it was due to Cast capability (and forcing you to get that ChromeCast or AndroidTV). For the original Pixel - there hasn't been much movement on the Android side but lots of helpful additions to support ChromeOS.
I'm not so sure if the lack of display output over USB C will be taken as lightly for the Pixel 2/3 gen devices with all desktop mode info coming out.
For the Pixel 3a/ 3a XL, the price does play a factor and it won't be a big shock if the feature has been omitted. It's not something to be happy about but it's something which can be easy to understand.

del mobile connect, its not brilliant for mirroring but shows it works
Might be a cable thing but I just gave it a go and failed.
Everyone was saying that it wasn't possible, but I finally figured out how to do it on my Pixel 3a XL! I uploaded a YouTube video so that people could see it actually is possible. Just search YouTube for the video title, "Pixel 3 to HDMI Video Output (using a WIRED adapter)" Basically you need to use a DisplayLink certified USB video adapter. I recommend that you get a newer adapter than the one I used because the frame rate dropped pretty bad at full screen and it put out really choppy/laggy video. I also tested it out on a USB-C powered DisplayLink certified monitor with the newer DisplayLink graphics chipset and the video was real smooth at full screen playback and while gaming.
Oh and you will also have to install the "DisplayLink Presenter" app/driver on your Pixel 2/3/4 phone from the Google Play Store.
Hope this helps!

pixel 3 desktop mode

Any chance that the desktop mode on android q be supported by pixel 3? Knowing that there is no HDMI out for pixel 3, would Google be able to enable HDMI out via a software update? Alternatively, can we use casting to enable the desktop mode on a secondary display with a Chromecast?
Now that Android 10 is available on Pixel 3 and 3 XL, can someone try a USB-C to HDMI adapter with Android 10 update to see if Google has activated HDMI over USB-C for Desktop Mode ? Thank you in advance guys ?
Disappointing, doesn’t do anything here. Never heard anything again about Desktop mode, except of the beginning of beta1.
@trinec it does work on OnePlus 7, 7 Pro and Essential Phone since Android 10 update, you just have to enable 'Force desktop mode' in Developer Settings, restart the phone and plug a USB-C to HDMI adapter

Enabled it, pluged it into a usb-c hdmi adapter: didn't do anything.
On the Oneplus 7 it seems to be pretty bad compared to Samsung Dex. So we are only missing out on google style alpha version of a desktop mode.
Thank you @madphone ! All Pixel smartphones (1, 1XL, 2, 2XL, 3, 3XL) have USB 3 except 3a and 3a XL which have USB 2 so Google could activate USB-C to HDMI support with a simple OTA update like LG did with Android 9 update on LG G7, V35 and V40 but they don't, for sure they want you to buy a chromecast but it has a way too high input lag in comparison to USB-C to HDMI adapters. Maybe it could be enabled with an alternative ROM but more and more Android smartphones are becoming compatible with HDMI adapters, soon all Android flagships will support HDMI except Pixels. High end smartphone (price) with low end capabilities, I think that's an enough reason for not buying it.
If you want an improved Desktop Mode on OnePlus 7 more similar to Samsung Dex you can install Sentio Desktop https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sentio.desktop

Question USB-C to HDMI not working

Anyone having issues with the video output from the Asus Rog phone 5 via USB-C cable? It was working fine when I first got the phone. I've been using it to stream on my youtube channel. A few weeks ago it stopped working. I'm not sure if it got updated but I was previously on the WW18.0830.211.75 Firmware and I just updated it to the WW18.0840.2106.86. It still doesn't work. I know it's not a cable issue as it was working before and if I use a different Android phone it works fine. I did a full reset and my USB-C cable to HDMI was connected to the TV and I did see the ROG Logo appear for a few seconds on the TV display and after that nothing again. Any help would be appreciated. Also if anyone has the original 18.0810 firmware I would like to try that. The links on this site are dead. Thanks in Advance!

"Quick Filters" let you see all posts of a certain type. This can make finding posts easier, but what if a guide began as a "Question"? This thread aims to bridge that gap. You will find nearly all of the common things new owners are trying to...
forum.xda-developers.com
You can find your firmware there. The raw firmware is a base firmware. The updated versions to it are still base firmware. Getting the oldest one typically isn't a good idea unless you have tried a newer one and had an issue you are sure was the raw firmware.
You may want to check what settings are enabled in developer options. I believe they have changed in the last few updates, but there is a section related to freeform windows and mirroring that may help with HDMI output.
I was able to reload the original firmware WW_ZS673KS_18.0810.2101.95 and still no USB-C to HDMI output. Not sure if anything could be wrong with the USB-C port for the video but I am able to do a data connection to my computer. I may just claim for a warranty exchange.

Yes side, I've been streaming with this phone when I first got it. Worked fine for a few months then it just stopped with the Rog 5. My other Android with my same setup works fine.
mind linking a picture of the adapter in question?
Have you tried another cable? I know you said the cable works with other phones, but I have seen cables work for some and not others.
You may want to contact Asus. That should be covered.
