Hey there, I just got a Pixel and I'm loving it so far. Digging into the forms I am seeing a lot of old and possibly outdated information.. is there a good guide on rooting/flashing from a fully updated phone?
I was also wondering if there was a general consensus on the most rock solid ROM. I used to tinker constantly but I am really valuing stability these days as I am fairly busy. Some devices seem to handle custom kernels/ROMs better while some devices always run better on a stock base.
Thanks!

I'm pretty new to it as well but from my experience both the custom rom and stock are very reliable. I've tried pixeldust but so far haven't tried other Roms. Currently I'm running stock rooted fully updated on elemental ex kernel. Been watching bootleggers but haven't made the time to check it out yet

I am newbie as well.
Funny, to have almost 3 years "old" device and being happy to have for a couple of bucks (bought on eBay, refurbished).
Ms previous device was always hacked with custom thinks, but now I am not sure to try them...
@systemshock869 hope you got a pixel manufactured on 2017 , or else you will be plagued with issues (2016 device)
About the ROMs, Bootlegger and Pixel Dust are smooth & has lot of customization's to play with

Thanks, I looked into it and I do have a 2017! I did some digging and found this, for anyone else who needs to check their serial number:
http://llabtoofer.com/2015/12/14/htc-devices-serial-number-explanation/
I originally purchased a Pixel from Amazon and on my first day of real use I found out that it could only take 1-2 calls before voice stopped working and it needed a reboot. Looks like the second one is a keeper!

Thanks, I'll look into those. Does the kernel affect battery life? Any quirky behavior? I am still pretty skeptical of custom kernels as I don't know much about them and have always had mixed results in the past..

I bought refurbished as well. I have grown out of trying to tinker constantly, but I really miss having adblocking and xposed.

Yep, bought mine off ebay a few weeks ago to replace an aging nexus 5. It's a 2016 and the goddamn mic wont work...crappy 2016 motherboards.
Guess i'll just return it and stick to my loyal Nexus 5 again
I ordered my Pixel when the first came out in October 2016 and never did experience the mentioned issued. I did have my USB port get loose so they replaced my device with a 2017 built one.

Under official manufacturer's statement, theres only 10% of the 2016th devices with MB issues.
I've only had one call where the microphone did not work, but even then I'm not sure if it was actually my phone or not.
This is the best recent pixel root guide /watch?v=zNjsb_V8NBk. First result in YouTube.
I'm on the same just got my pixel
First lookup - oem unlock on Verizon pixel - think this works on all types and you'll need to reset if you can't set oem in development
Second look up - how to root google pixel on Android 9 - video by maowdroid 19.11 long
These should help you.

Hey guys
I've been looking to re-buy this phone now that the prices are dropping (cheapest I've seen on Amazon is $150 +Tx and S&H) since my original Alcatel Idol 3 was stolen last January (still have the box with accessories intact). I've bought a Blu Life One X 2016 and it's great but I can't get my head around how great battery life was and overall quality on the Alcatel was, hence I'm still keeping an eye on Amazon. So my questions are, is it still as good quality as when it was released over a year ago? also Tmobile on compatibility it says Partial for Voice/Text and 4G LTE Data. What does this mean and how does it affect Tmobile users?
Thanks for any help

It should still be exactly the same as before, except it will probably have mm when you unbox it. If you use the stock OS, the mm version is way better than the original one.
Mine was 130 from cricket and 3 months in I still think it was an incredible value.
If you want to install a rom on there when you get it, there is now an extra step you have to do at the beginning due to the new firmware, but it's still super easy to do.
Lastly cm13 (the mm version) is currently being developed on xda for the idol 3. It is simply the pinnacle of phone OSes. There was a delay waiting for Alcatel to release the mm kernel sources but they finally did it!

Awesome, thanks a lot. Any idea why compatibility now says Partial for Voice/Text and 4G LTE Data.? When I first bought my phone it was Full compatibility for T Mobile.

My mistake, no mm sources yet, they are using the prebuilt kernel for now.
Also to answer other question, lte band 12 is disabled on the mm firmware. To fix it all you need to do is install twrp and flash the 5.x modem zip over the mm install. Detailed directions and requiree files are available on xda idol 3 forum. It only takes a few minutes and this doesn't change anything else except bringing back band 12.
Everyone should spend a few hours reading around your phones area on xda. You will learn so much...

So my GP2 is due to arrive tomorrow and I'm excited but also worried. With all the reported issues, I'm wondering if I shouldn't just cancel my order and stick to my original Pixel phone. It seems to work just fine and it's paid for. I wonder how many of these devices there are that are reporting issues. I imagine that people like us who roam in XDA pay much closer attention to issues on devices, but I'm seeing these stories posted in other Android Forums as well. I don't remember there being this many issues right out of the gate with the original Pixel. I'm kind of bummed now.
Its mainly the Pixel 2 XL having issues. Dont be worried
I haven't heard anything bad about pixel 2 aside from the bezels.

There is one known real issue with the Pixel 2, which Google has acknowledged, the clicking sound and high pitched whine that some (not all) phones have: https://productforums.google.com/fo...!msg/phone-by-google/XuQgtm5dK8I/7SZD7EfxAAAJ https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/clicking-phone-calls-t3691069 https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/clicking-sound-pixel-2-t3692574

Clicking sound aside, I would not worry. You're right that it's the people with problems who tend to post here at XDA and on reddit and elsewhere. It can create the impression of vast problems, when in fact 99% of people are fine or having a great experience. So certainly no reason to cancel your order, before you even know what your experience of the phone will be. Don't you get a 30 day return period anyway? Try the phone out, see how you like it, and if you find it has problems or not worth it, then return it. But if you wanted it in the first place, enough to place an order, it's worth at least giving it a try.
Personally, I think the phone is really great and I even have the clicking issue mentioned above (but again many do not). I'm working/waiting to resolve that, but don't intend to give up on the phone.
Well, I got my GP2 20 minutes ago and it is all setup (and currently updating all my apps). So far no noises whatsoever. Screen looks AWESOME as well. Here's to my fingers being crossed!
Hi
I'm panning to buy this device.
at present I'm using mdio : redmi note 4x
while it's an awesome phone and has excellent development community, the phone sucks in terms of audio quality, call quality and camera. hence planning to move to op6. can someone please answer my concerns?
1. how is development community strength here for op6?
2. can the device be rooted with magisk easily with stock rom retaining OTA? ( safetynet should pass and play store should be certified)
3. How's stock rom updates? is it frequently updated?
4. How's custom ROMs? are there plenty of them? are those better than stock?
5. rooting with magisk and custom ROMs breaks any features? degrades any performance?
6. is there any major issue with device (with stock ROM or custom ROM) , especially camera, microphone. video quality etc.
7. can device be revert to stock ROM and locked bootloader back?
It would be great if someone can answer my queries
Thanks in advance

Thanks,
it seems like different users face different issues on each point I've asked, while some of them have no issues at all.
so just wanted to know if any issue (if its there) which, all or most of them are facing.

Well, most of the time you only hear from people with problems because when a device is working without problems then these people wont communicate about it unless they big xda freaks
I never got any problems with my oneplus 6 and i think the device is awesome, fast and super easy to flash roms or root and unlike samsung etc, where you trip knox and cant even use the private folder etc no more so i think this is a big plus for oneplus because you can always revert back to original state.

Also your last point answers one of my question, that device can be reverted back to original state.
1. You find lots of roms and kernels here on xda so the community is big, strong.
2. yes
3. More or less. Latest security patch from july. Firmeare updates are frequent.
4. Find out yourself. Some are magisk modules so easy to handle.
5. No. Not that I know.
6. No
7. Yes
Like others already said it all depends on your needs.
Camera, audio quality, screen are good but not the best.
I think it's the best you can get for the price.
Performance is very good. Modding is very easy.

Yea, i upgraded from my galaxy s7 and think this oneplus 6 is insane huge, screen wise but its hella fast and really love the dash charge. I also contacted oneplus and asked how much a new battery because the battery downgrades after 2-3 years and they told me its 33.43 euro after warranty and this include shipping and repair and they told me its cheaper if you do it in the 2 year warranty so its dirty cheap if you ask me.
Alsi if you need that extra discount when you order that oneplus 6 then hit me up so i can send you that ref link

No, performance is fine. The camera is brilliant with the modded camera app. I find all the Xiaomi stuff littering the phone a nuisance although I have removed as much as I can without rooting. (I used to root every phone I owned but need flawless Google Pay - always - and don't want to play whack-a-mole with Google).
I resisted setting up a Xiaomi account - why would I have an account with a phone manufacturer? I'm not really a fan of Mui but with a Google Pixel Launcher it's good enough but I am finding the lack of proper notifications on email less than stellar. I like the Xi charging; OnePlus have never done this. Google's Nexus 4 - I think - did and I was hooked from then on.
There are two issues with Xiaomi really. The over riding issue is security. In my mind timely security updates are essential for any phone manufacturer wanting to be taken seriously. And the second is all the data collection that Xiaomi try to do on me; they seem me as a legitimate subject to data mine and advertise to; I'm not.
So I was hoping the Pixel 4 might finally get Google back on to the straight and narrow that the Nexus phones found. Alas no; it seems the Pixel 4 are stylisticly dead in the water with chin and forehead size bezels as gross as they are. So it looks as if I'll be returning to the OnePlus fold if they can master a through-the-screen camera and finger print scanner on the back where it should be.
I had been running a OnePlus since the the days of the One and went to 3, 5 and 6. I like OnePlus. Reasonable performance; regular updates and close to pure Android.
But liking a phone (why do we still call it a phone - its so much more?) liking a phone is very personal and your mileage will vary from mine.
Any new information about the new update?
New update pushed out. Dark mode now available in stable.
Full rom 10.3.2.0

Dark more available but themes don't work correctly when turned on.
Is there a full fastboot image available for the latest version?
Hello guys, I am still running on WW_18.0840.2103.26.
What is the best version to update to? For "best" I mean best battery life, good temperature without sacrificing game performance and not crashing. I've read positive feedbacks on verson .229, but I wonder what do You guys suggest.
Also, do I have to install each update one by one or go straight to the newer version?
Thank You in advance
I tought it was an easy question, is this the right forum to post in?
The problem is not your questions but the lack of actual users that have this phone and also use XDA. Its such a small number you are unlikely to get a fast reply. You also did not specify which phone you have. Is its the 5? 5S?
I have the 5S Pro and my update from 3/31/22 is stable and works great. There are however more updates since then, I just havent done it yet.

Your last update is over year old. Personally I would at least update to the latest android 11 update. If you are not a fan of Android 12 UI you can skip it. Android 11 support for the 5 went up to 3/14/22 (WW-18.0840.2201.229) I believe. I am on Android 12 and have no issues as far as I can tell however I bought the phone with Android 12 already on it so I dont know how Android 11 is on the 5S Pro to compare to.

Yes, I play Call of Duty, Apex Legends and some random small games like Solitaire or Sudoku. I havent really noticed any lag outside of one time. Not sure what happened but I was around 20% battery and the phone wasnt even hot (Maybe its because I plugged in the charger about 10 mins prior to this?). This was like 5 days ago, haven't had that since. If I remember, I will try to watch the FPS and see if it drops when the phone gets hot.
Version WW-31.0810.1226.84
There are only two times not to be on the newest update. One is when you are talking about an iPhone or console where they may not have jailbroken, rooted, or designed a CFW for it yet and you want to maximize your chances of being compatible. The second is when it is a major Android version update and you have software that is no longer compatible or the design has changed in a way that you absolutely refuse to adapt.
The theory that older versions outperformed newer ones is an archaic one. It dates back to when there were 100 custom ROMs floating around trying to release Android versions as the code was published. Android 12 has been running on devices since October of 2021. It's not experimental in the least.

I see that A12 is not experimental, but literally 99% of people with rog 5 are having trouble with it ->

It's really not 99% of people having problems. It's that 99% of people that are posting about it are the ones who did have problems.
Works fine on my 5S Pro as well. Although I got it with A12 already on it so I cant really have a comparison. However coming from a OnePlus 8T with A12, this is way smoother and way way less bugs.

I agree that it is more probable that posts come from people complaining rather than complimenting, and You also got a really good point that most of the trouble could be related to conversion. Btw lots of people complaining with fried motherboards from update on non-converted unit get me thinking about quality check.
Pretty sure that is not normal that I (and lots of other rog users) am scared to update my phone.
