Question What is the best update? - ASUS ROG Phone 5 / 5s

Hello guys, I am still running on WW_18.0840.2103.26.
What is the best version to update to? For "best" I mean best battery life, good temperature without sacrificing game performance and not crashing. I've read positive feedbacks on verson .229, but I wonder what do You guys suggest.
Also, do I have to install each update one by one or go straight to the newer version?
Thank You in advance

I tought it was an easy question, is this the right forum to post in?

The problem is not your questions but the lack of actual users that have this phone and also use XDA. Its such a small number you are unlikely to get a fast reply. You also did not specify which phone you have. Is its the 5? 5S?
I have the 5S Pro and my update from 3/31/22 is stable and works great. There are however more updates since then, I just havent done it yet.

Your last update is over year old. Personally I would at least update to the latest android 11 update. If you are not a fan of Android 12 UI you can skip it. Android 11 support for the 5 went up to 3/14/22 (WW-18.0840.2201.229) I believe. I am on Android 12 and have no issues as far as I can tell however I bought the phone with Android 12 already on it so I dont know how Android 11 is on the 5S Pro to compare to.

Yes, I play Call of Duty, Apex Legends and some random small games like Solitaire or Sudoku. I havent really noticed any lag outside of one time. Not sure what happened but I was around 20% battery and the phone wasnt even hot (Maybe its because I plugged in the charger about 10 mins prior to this?). This was like 5 days ago, haven't had that since. If I remember, I will try to watch the FPS and see if it drops when the phone gets hot.

Version WW-31.0810.1226.84
There are only two times not to be on the newest update. One is when you are talking about an iPhone or console where they may not have jailbroken, rooted, or designed a CFW for it yet and you want to maximize your chances of being compatible. The second is when it is a major Android version update and you have software that is no longer compatible or the design has changed in a way that you absolutely refuse to adapt.
The theory that older versions outperformed newer ones is an archaic one. It dates back to when there were 100 custom ROMs floating around trying to release Android versions as the code was published. Android 12 has been running on devices since October of 2021. It's not experimental in the least.

Thank You for your answer, btw I don't understand what do you mean.
I see that A12 is not experimental, but literally 99% of people with rog 5 are having trouble with it ->

2) https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/60417/performance-beast-rog5 .
Maybe I get it wrong, but seems like you say that A12 is fine and works good.

Works fine on my end, but mine isn't a conversion.
It's really not 99% of people having problems. It's that 99% of people that are posting about it are the ones who did have problems.

Works fine on my 5S Pro as well. Although I got it with A12 already on it so I cant really have a comparison. However coming from a OnePlus 8T with A12, this is way smoother and way way less bugs.

I agree that it is more probable that posts come from people complaining rather than complimenting, and You also got a really good point that most of the trouble could be related to conversion. Btw lots of people complaining with fried motherboards from update on non-converted unit get me thinking about quality check.
Pretty sure that is not normal that I (and lots of other rog users) am scared to update my phone.

[Q]Will we get Linux Kernel 3.14 on the N5, when it comes out?

So the title basically says it all. I've read that the google team is working hard on getting the 3.14 kernel to android, possibly with Android 5.0. My question is, if anyone has any idea if we'll get the latest kernel with the android update, or the kernel will be just for newer devices, like the nexus 6? I used to have a Nexus S, but I don't remember if it ever got a kernel update, when they rolled up a major android update. So any ideas guys?
Since none of us can see into the future, anything anyone says will be a pure guess.

All I can expect is a well educated guess based on past experience. I know that no one knows for sure, but if google did something like this before they are likely to do it again. It's just that I skipped over some generations of nexus devices and I don't know if google updates the kernel as it comes out, or do you get to keep only what you got when you've bought the phone?
btw, hi rootSU, haven't seen you in a while

I'm guessing they won't. Not every kernel release has something in it that we need. Generally we wouldn't need to re-base the kernel for standard use.
Then again, this is my first nexus.

Yeah I've seen you post in a couple of S3 threads, I'd say very often Nexus devices are far superior to other phones(IMHO), I hope you like your N5. I got my S3 as a gift, hated that device, glad I managed to sell it and get a N5.
Yeah it's great. I've never had a Nexus but the HTC Desire I used to have was closely related to the Nexus One. I'll never go Samsung again.....and if I were to, it would definitely need to be Qualcomm based.

Updates global stable version .

it is from March that I no longer receive updates for the global version, I am at 10.3.1.0. have they already left the device? should I install another rom? are there any hopes for widevine certification l1?
Tnks.

I am not disappointed in performance, and camera is also good & also installed gcam. They also promised android Q. So, it is not that bad . Although, I was thinking of Oneplus next time because they are known for their software support.

No, performance is fine. The camera is brilliant with the modded camera app. I find all the Xiaomi stuff littering the phone a nuisance although I have removed as much as I can without rooting. (I used to root every phone I owned but need flawless Google Pay - always - and don't want to play whack-a-mole with Google).
I resisted setting up a Xiaomi account - why would I have an account with a phone manufacturer? I'm not really a fan of Mui but with a Google Pixel Launcher it's good enough but I am finding the lack of proper notifications on email less than stellar. I like the Xi charging; OnePlus have never done this. Google's Nexus 4 - I think - did and I was hooked from then on.
There are two issues with Xiaomi really. The over riding issue is security. In my mind timely security updates are essential for any phone manufacturer wanting to be taken seriously. And the second is all the data collection that Xiaomi try to do on me; they seem me as a legitimate subject to data mine and advertise to; I'm not.
So I was hoping the Pixel 4 might finally get Google back on to the straight and narrow that the Nexus phones found. Alas no; it seems the Pixel 4 are stylisticly dead in the water with chin and forehead size bezels as gross as they are. So it looks as if I'll be returning to the OnePlus fold if they can master a through-the-screen camera and finger print scanner on the back where it should be.
I had been running a OnePlus since the the days of the One and went to 3, 5 and 6. I like OnePlus. Reasonable performance; regular updates and close to pure Android.
But liking a phone (why do we still call it a phone - its so much more?) liking a phone is very personal and your mileage will vary from mine.
Any new information about the new update?
New update pushed out. Dark mode now available in stable.

Dark more available but themes don't work correctly when turned on.
Is there a full fastboot image available for the latest version?

February 2020 Security update where is it?

Did Xiaomi forgot it? What happens?
It's still February and we will get it next week. Keep calm!
Coronavirus happened?
When the device first launched, we used to get updates in the first week of the month, but as the time went by we started getting them by the end of the month. We will get it. But don't keep your hopes up, it'll just be a mere security update and 'bug fixes'. Most probably.

Not to mention, some neighboring provinces in China are also affected with the virus, not just Wuhan.
I really don't think that the virus poses a threat to the development. I'm quite sure that in this day and age, people can work from home or basically from anywhere in the world. It will just be another excuse for Xiaomi's laziness. Hell, Xiaomi India's official Twitter account said that Mi A3 would get the Q update mid-February, but it's February 23rd and they still didn't get one. So, I've stopped expecting anything from Xiaomi, and I've learnt a valuable lesson, never again cheap Chinese smartphones. They come with bloat, slow updates and sh*tty customer support. Cheers.

For the price its an ok phone. However most likely this was my first and last Xiaomi phone.
Would not be surprised to see them use the virus as a. Excuse to drop updates on the device, would prefer if they communicated but they seem to just ignore us, problem being is the one program is not profitable for them selling as they cannot load advertising in to the device
Update bug question
the new update that rolled out about a week ago now (at least for the s9+), and I'm wondering what bugs this one has. I had to back up my stuff and factory reset my phone to get some of the bugs out. I'm still noticing some other things I'm not crazy about even after that reset, though my phone is working MUCH better now. Can someone who has it give me their input before I do the update? Thanks!

Same. But Google forces oems to use features as a default. If oem wants to take Android 10 certificate on his new phone Google forces them to use Cam2Api as a default. Google gives me hope in a good way.
More force to the Oems for new features = Better phones
Google knows if they leave the choices to Oems this will cause deep differencies between phones. I am glad they understand that.
For example:
Gcam vs Stock Mi A2 Lite camera. You know the difference. Its like day and night. Same hardware but better results.

I just predict the future for future phones.
Either wait for Xiaomi or go custom rom... I'll wait until the end of March if they don't provide the upgrade I will

upgrade to android 11 or stay on 10

it is so frustrating that they release phones so often with no chance to really refines them. then there is google that puts out versions of android before developers get a chance to master or migrate fully to the latter.
i heard the new storage security in android 11 can cause hiccups like slow loading and crashes due to the new storage activity due to the new security rules.
should i stay on android 10 just like so many stayed on android 4.x.x for so long to keep compatibility

I did and as I said I've never had any issues with an update in 11 years. I'm sure Sammy will have it figured out before they release it. All my phones have been rooted until the Note 7, and you take more chance flashing a rom written by some dev than an update from a major player.

But samsung does not work or develop the third party apps or what not that you install on your phone. Any unsupported app you use will likely be crippled(heard that loading times can be 100× longer to start the app) and any dev too aggravated to to fix it may stop supporting his or her project. Also most devs have not even cought up to android 10. Yea i hope to many update and google learns their error in this mess

If it does happen and I seriously doubt it, I'll just reflash with odin and restore my backup. My glass is half full, not half empty. I have friends on other forums running 11 beta on Pixels with no issues.
Am I in a pixel or oneplus thread? Note 20 ultra users most likely get Android 11 before March 2021 and chances are that any kinks should be ironed out by then. I don't understand why this conversation needs to happen this early.

I will absolutely update as soon as its available. I always sign up for the beta each year to get the update ASAP. Most people complain that Samsung doesn't update fast enough. Haven't heard anyone complain yet that they update TOO fast, LOL.
These concerns happen every year, and they always end up being a non-issue.
As far as app compatibility issues, that's the developers' issues. They are advised long in advance what they need to do to remain compatible with the current OS.

Yup! Sammy has stepped up their update game the last few years. I think last year they were pushing the official Android 10 before the end of the year to some devices. I think, but I could be wrong. I know it was earlier than the previous years.

LOL. I don't think I lucked out. I think issues with OS updates are far less common than you think. I'd say you are definitely in the minority.
I've been on Android since the original Moto Droid. I've had almost every Moto, LG, Samsung, Nexus, and Pixel. I've been through beta OS updates, official updates, side loaded updates, unofficial ported updates, you name it.
You're going back 5 YEARS and saying because an update broke your favorite application, that Google/Samsung updates too often? Is every update perfect? No, but they certainly don't break everything the way you think they do.
~
Android updates on Samsung phones are always an anti-climax. Samsung tend to have implemented all the best features that a new Android update brings already. What you end up with is a range of bugs or security features that break your apps. I will always go for the update that's offered but I am not excited about it or bothered if there's a delay in any roll outs.

No you are absolutely right. I'm out in Canada and if memory serves me right we got Android 10 at the beginning of January a month or so after the US. It was the years prior that the OS update came out with the S series release. And to your point Samsung has stepped up their game, tremendously. It's right after the Pixels and Oneplus which is not too shabby. And getting faster to boot. No complaints here. :good:

Yup! Sammy has stepped up their update game the last few years. I think last year they were pushing the official Android 10 before the end of the year to some devices. I think, but I could be wrong. I know it was earlier than the previous years.

Yeah, Note10+ got Android 10 in December I believe. Definitely was super fast compared to Note9 getting Android 9 (February/March).

So true. I read one of the big changes with Android was bubble-like messaging, much like FB Messenger. Uh... I've had that in Samsung for a couple years now I think? My text app always pops up in a bubble instead of the notifications panel.

Thats what I was thinking, but couldn't remember 100%. Unless there's somd major issues, it looks like we're on the same timeline for Android 11, since the beta is already out for the international S20 series. US Note 20 won't be too far behind.

Spot on. What a wrenched mess.
My 10+ is still running well on Pie.
Google is insane to emulate Apple.
I don't think Google will fix it, another Vista.
Probably stay on Pie for the life of this phone and hope Google regains their sphincter control with 12 or 13...

I saw that too, wtf? Messenger does that all the time with Pie.
Lol, half of the time I disable it because it's a nuisance.
I've backed up all my Playstore apps with APK Export because of them either being taken down in Playstore or turned into a bloody mess to adapt to 10/11.
I also have a couple trusted apps the use overlays, Q would render them useless or a pain to use.
I remember the horror of Vista and Lollipop... Pie is running very well, WYSIWYG
The most I'll do for now is an occasional reload of Pie if needed. All my data including the all apks/system updates are stored on my SD card so reloads are much easier. No screwing around with or waiting for Playstore. Any app that allows it's setup to be exported is also saved there.
With over 230 GB of data it saves a lot of time coping it from the laptop too.
I never have a phone without an SD card slot... you know like an Apple.

I hate that you guys fell this way. I think this is maybe the best phone I've ever had. I've been running Android 11 for a couple days and I must say it vastly improved this phone. It fixed a lot of problems I was having and I couldn't be happier. It sucks because we have one of the only phones that can make Oneplus, Samsung and Apple fanboys jealous... IMO....

Nono, it really is amazing phone but my problem is with my updates and allot of others, people can't update at all even with a vpn, and the customer service agent helpful at all, if it wasn't for people posting new updates I'd be stuck on may security

Oh okay, I thought we were losing a member. I don't know why the updates are so iffy. Some regions are like clockwork and some regions aren't getting anything. Yes, the customer service is garbage.

If the updates wore as consistent as other regions it would be my perfect phone! Without a doubt.
But I'm going to wait to December when we get the android 11 update, and hope I get it

Sucks you guys have to wait so long to get it. It's truly awesome...
Love the phone, I really do but for updates this phone sucks big time. Came from a pixel and samsung phone.. their updates are so much faster. Even for a samsung phone.
I hope the update for android 11 is a good one because I'm thinking to switch back to a pixel phone.
Let me get this straight? You want to sell your phone because you haven't had an update in the last couple of months ? Clearly you've never been a Samsung user I'm loving the phone, coming from a Samsung galaxy note 9. I now have a Snapdragon , decent base storage , and that dual battery / 30 minute fast charge is perfect for heavy usage, paired with decent battery life, +5 hour SOT over 24 hours consistently with all the bells and whistles switched on.

I got an update every month with my S10 plus , so yeah I so know, before the S10 updates wore crap, region settings gone no updates themes don't work fonts don't work breeno services don't work heytap cloud doesn't work, I spent 1100 pounds on this phone I expect top notch for paying that amount, because your not having these problems it's not effecting you so you can't really comment on this..... Have you looked on the updates thread about all the other problems?...

you guys living in EU should read this to understand :
"As a side note, due to limitations of the GDPR, European users will not have access to the beta version of the software. Even if you have an eligible device, you’ll need to wait until the stable rollout of Color OS 11 before you’ll be able to install it. Users outside of Europe will be able to try the open beta if they wish."
Source : https://www.androidauthority.com/color-os-11-1157601/
But Oppo swear they will release stable version before end of 2020.
Luckily im using Fx2P asia version . I have to say COS11 is really nice update and this device is stunning

Try change VPN to VN ? which version are you in ?
I think oppo should be quicker with the updates inc security patches.
I remember reading this was one area they were looking to improve on.
I can't wait for colorOS11 but December is quite far away, hope the western market it get it much sooner.
