Simplest phone to root that will work on Total Wireless (verizon)? - General Questions and Answers

Hey,
Total Wireless doesn't let you tether. I want to get a simple phone that I can then add to my family plan on Total Wireless, root it, then use it as a hot spot...
Any advice on which phone that should be and a link to how to root it?
Thank you!
BTW - 3rd party tether apps (some anyway) let you see how much data connected devices are using, right?

Any device that can be rooted and is compatible with Tracfone network on Verizon towers.
Even if the phone doesn't natively have the hotspot feature, with root, you can add the hotspot feature.
As for seeing how much data is being used by a device, even if you manage to hide the fact that you're using data on hotspot, the network can still see the total volume of data that your phone is pulling from the network, from that, they can still tell that you are using hotspot, when you use tether/hotspot, it requires more data.
To give you some sort of idea what I mean, let's say that you enable hotspot on your device and then connect another device to the hotspot it creates, for ever 1MB of data that the connected device pulls from the hotspot, the device that is acting as hotspot is pulling 2MB of data from the mobile network. These are not meant to be accurate numbers, it is only meant to give you an idea how data usage works when using a hotspot.
The point is, with the way it uses more data while hotspotting, it's very easy to tell that you are using hotspot because it uses a higher volume of data in a shorter amount of time than when you aren't using hotspot.

Thank you for the info. I am planning on using it for a security cam so I am hoping it won't use too much data.
It is funny... They do offer hot spot but you can't buy one on their site... I will be happy to just get a hot spot if possible. I won't if anyone here knows how to do it

The "how to" method of getting hotspot enabled is going to depend on exactly which device you get. You need to focus on making a choice of device first and THEN you can focus on the "how to".

Tethering Enabled!!

So I went to a t-mobile store today to pick up a MT4G, and noticed that the demo handset had wireless tethering enabled. So, I went ahead and bought one on my Even More Plus plan (installments, not subsidized/contract.)
Once I got it set up and working, I had a look in the Wireless settings again, and....vanilla Froyo tethering is enabled?!?
Now, I'm sure they plan on handing this similar to the T-Mobile TV stuff (trialware with a big fat agreement before you can run it) - but why would this be enabled out of the box? They can't charge you without you agreeing to the extra fee.
Now, apparently there's an OTA already, but I'll be damned if I'll install until someone confirms that tethering still works without an up-sale screen.
Anyone have any insight on this? Why is this enabled without me having to agree to paying the bill?

I just called customer service about this an the associate stated that it will deduct out of ur minutes. That being said, I dont know what the statement is saying.

Sprint blocked the traffic from traversing to and from the remote gateway, but I believe this was only in their provided app. Other apps worked without much issue, but required rooting.

They can't. It's impossible to tell the difference without doing deep packet inspection on a massive scale (ie. all network traffic.) In other words, they can't.

*sigh* bull****.
1) if other apps work, then it is (by definition) not blocked.
2) TCP/IP traffic which originates at the phone (either via masquerading / IP forwarding or an application) looks the same from the outside. There is no way to distinguish one from the other.
You can still use PDANet without root though. It's wired, but is it really worth the battery power to use wireless when you don't need it?

It is if you want to tether non-windows/mac or multiple devices. Besides, you can still plug it in while using wireless...
As for PDA net, I've noticed some weird stuff there, like 1000+ms latency, DNS failures, etc. Stuff that doesn't happen from the phone itself. Odd...
Looks like the tether option is still there also, if you look at the Connect to PC menu. But my wireless is working. If it goes down, just soft root and install the app that replicates the feature.
I just installed the OTA that finally allowed WiFi calling. Tethering still works for me, using the $20 preferred data plan. If they try to hit me with a charge in a few days or weeks, I'll just call and *****. If they can't sell it to me for super cheap, I'll just use PDAnet. Problem solved.

[Q] Is there a way you can use the phone modem?

Hello. I want to know if there is a way to use this phone modem in the Computer?
but watch out, I'm not talking about Tethering or using a tether APP like PDANet, etc. I just want to have my Phone modem available in my pc, so I can use it in an application and connect to the internet throught this software. I need it this way because although I can use, it Internet in my PC by several ways (USB tether, Wifi hotspot, etc) I need to use an Aplication to avoid my 3G speed to downgrade after I consume my quota.
You are not gonna be able to bypass the limit. No matter what you do there is no way to use the internet and make it look like your not.
Ok. That's what I think, but a friend of mine claims he has a software that trick your carrier, and I wanna try it. Anway there are ways (with applications and settings) to use the Internet of your mobile phone for free. Those methods need to access to your phone modem.
Since no modem appear in the device manager, just a network device, it is impossible to use those methods with this phone

You can't get free internet. If your friend knows so much about this special software you would think that your friend would have told you how to conect your phone. But anyways.....install HTC Sync on your pc and it will install the drivers for the phone to be used as a modem.

I dont know what trying to steal from the network providers has to do with android/phone development. You are best off to just either pay for what you use or have your friend that is bragging about stealing internet help you with doing the same.
personally i bet hes lying to you just to make you waste time trying to find a way lol

Forget about tricking you carrier about data quota, I was exceptic about it, and I think is not posible. but I am sure there are ways of having free internet in your computer throught your GSM network without paying a cent, at least in my country (A friend of mine connects to the internet like this). The thing is that you have to have a USB 3G modem or you can use your mobile phone, but you need to have your device modem available.
Yeah, its called tethering. But you have to pay for the 3G internet connection through your mobile carrier. Nothing free. Unless you BORROW your nieghbor's wifi.

ok guys lets let it go. Bottom line is there is no way to do what your asking. No matter what you do, packets will be sent over the data stream and this will be logged. You would have to make all data packet have a size of zero and not hit any towers or the server. This is not going to happen. Every single kb your phone sends out is logged. From the small 1kb used for an mms to the 4mbs used for an app download.
Also there is no way to access the hardware phone modem. To be honest I think your friend is lying to you

Tethering A Computer vs. Tablet

Tried to ask this in the general forums and didn't get an answer, wondering f you guys could help. Got an s3 to keep my unlimited data. Reading it says that Verizon can tell if you tethering to a computer due to TTL packets. I don't know much about networking but reading it says that windows computers while tethering push a value of 124 or 128 packets unless configured while android devices have a value of 64. The thing is I never tether to my computer only my tablet. So can I safely go nuts tethering to my tablet as if it was my phone due to it looking like I'm using my phone or am I way off and can Verizon tell I'm tethering and using my tablet. I really just want tot tether the hell out f my tablet when I need it. Anyways as this is XDA can I hide it safely? I have an unlimited data plan so the whole OK to tether thing since that lawsuit doesn't apply to me with this.

I don't know about the packet size issue you mentioned.
Otherwise, I have read that if*your Verizon tethering indicator turns on or your usage suddenly goes quite high for a month or more, they might suspect you of tethering without a plan and look into it. It's also said that apps like PDAnet make it very difficult for the service provider to figure out if you are tethering or not - regardless of what you're connected to.

VZW can no longer block tethering on 4g phones. Due to FCC saying so. Simple Google search will fond multiple articles.
There is no restrictions on unlimited versus tiered data plan. What counts is that you have a 4g phone. Check out this article ans the tether away.

Rocking T2 on the unlocked VSG3!
I've read differently. It sounds like if you have an unlimited data plan you can only use that data plan for a single device meaning that you can't tether the unlimited data. I read multiple places that this is part of the terms of service and it doesn't apply to unlimited data plan users... M
aybe somebody can clarify this for me because it would be great to use my unlimited data for tethering when on vacations.

Tethering
Its like not paying you bill. You get a warning. You can always deny it or ignore it. Modern PDANet if thats what you are boing to use has some countermeasures. At least 2 I think. Don't know if they are effective. You can just use Orobot to tunnel your traffic and I'm pretty certain that would work. I don't know what you plan to do but I wouldn't go download something shady from some torrent site though. Web browsing and getting email is probably fine.
I've been tethering my laptop to my phone since I first figured out how to do it with the Droid X. Meaning basically since I rooted it and found a decent tether app. Out of 5 people on a business share plan(business version of family plan - add a line for 9.99 etc) I've always had significantly highest usage. 5 gigs at a bare minimum, and not once has verizon figured out I'm tethering.
I honestly dont think they can really tell if you are or arent tehtering. 4g or 3g.
Curious, is Verizon still charging people today who were paying before the ruling? Is it possible now for me to use built in hotspot instead of wifi tether, regardless of whether or not i am on a custom rom? I am using latest synergy atm with wifi tether, i should have no problem using built in right?

atm no. the software is still there to keep you from doing that. IF you root, the world is your oyster though... and they aren't actually allowed to do anything to do. They just aren't rushing to open everyone up to free hotspotting.

[SOLVED] One Click Wifi Tether with t0mmy not working... any ideas?

For some reason, I am getting an error when I try using t0mmy (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677261) one click tether enabler. I've done some searching and cannot find anyone else who has had this issue. What the heck am I missing (screenshots attached)?! Any ideas?
Info:
- Stock AT&T ROM
- Rooted
- Android 4.0.4
- Used on StraightTalk... all APNs are setup correctly... data works on the phone.
For solution, SEE BELOW
One other thing I should mention is that even when I am using `android-wifi-tether` it will not work. It just shows up as a device on my computer when it is turned on as a wifi hotspot.
I've downloaded SQLite Browser and have changed all fields with "broadband" to "pta". Still no go.

When I click to activate the native wifi hotspot, it says that I cannot have a hotspot and to call 611. So I am trying Android Wifi Tether, which works for a little bit then after about 3 seconds, says "what the hell, your phone is taking over. shutting down wifi." Something like that. I'm just trying to get this phone setup so my friend can use it as a hotspot.
SQLite is to edit my `telephony.db`
Well, I do believe that it could be because you are using a stock rom, so att bulit in securities could be taking over. Also, I do want you to know that ATT does have advanced technology to detect tethering. without notice, they can upgrade you data plan to 5gb ($50) because you were caught tethering. it is the way the apn connects. now you can try to change your apn to BROADBAND, which is tethering, but again, but warned. if your data plan changes (esepcially if you are grandfathered into one), then that's on you...
so here are my suggestions: change the APN to broadband, get off the stock, and im sure there are a plethora of apps in the play market that should work

They will send you a warning (physical letter or SMS, can't remember which exactly) notifying you have been caught tethering without the appropriate data plan. Then, if you are caught again, they will change you plan.
Probably nobody except folks at AT&T know the exact methods they use to monitor for tethering. But the thought here is that a high amount of usage will raise red flags, then they will examine data packets for the signs of tethering.
Some folks (myself included) have been able to tether without getting caught, by just doing it occasionally, and keeping the data usage low. But even then, the system seems far from consistent. I've seen a couple of folks report on here getting the tethering warning from AT&T, despite having never even tethered.
The days when you could easily pirate tethering may be coming to an end. AT&T has really cracked down on it and improved their methods of detection. Even if you get this working, you will get caught if you start tethering regularly.

I do apologize, you are right. You will get a notice first. And then if you continue, then you will still bumped out. It is an email AND a SMS. Using small amount of data is usually the way to go. But if you trying to tether a computer, then most likely the data usage will be high. As I mentioned in other posts, as a former AT&T employee, if you want to tether, just upgrade your data plan. If you are on unlimited data, you will already get throttled at 3gb, so the Unlimited data and 3gb are basically the same thing, which is why the price is the same.
I have seem some accounts when excessive tethering is done, that the data is actually suspended, no matter what the case is. It's weird that AT&T can do that, but it is in their wireless agreement, which is at section 6 i think.
Thanks for the heads up about AT&T clamping down on this. It is good to know. I am doing this for an elderly couple who rarely use the internet. This is their first smart phone. They are savvy enough to know what that message means if they get it. I will let them know about it too.
They mainly will be accessing on the device itself but wanted the option to use it as a hotspot as well. They are already paying for data... they purchased the phone used and are under no contract (on Straight Talk). They want to use something they own, however they want. It's too bad AT&T is so mean.
It's like buying a computer and then the manufacturer says you cannot use bluetooth unless you pay them a monthly service charge.
[SOLUTION]
Oh yeah, I forgot to post that I figured a way out to get 'android-wifi-tether.apk' to work on the stock AT&T ROM.... here we go:
Get "Proxoid" from the Google Play Store
Get WiFi Tether from the Google Play Store (or from here [QR Codes in link]: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/)
Get a mobile data widget
Once you have them installed, get them all lined up somewhere you can easily run them one after the other.
Make sure mobile data OFF before you turn anything on.
Open Proxoid and check the box to start/stop Proxoid... you want it ON
Open WiFi Tether and turn on tethering
Now you can turn on mobile data
This worked successful for me. I tested it for about 10-15 minutes, playing YouTube videos, reading some blogs, checked out some google image searches and so on. If you do not turn Proxoid on before mobile data is on, this will NOT work.
ENJOY! :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
UPDATE: This only worked on my Mac and Android phone. Mac picked up the HOX as a "device" instead of a wifi connection but it worked. Windows cannot find the connection at all. If someone knows how to get Windows to find the device and use it as a hotspot please let me know.
While tethering is a feature of the phone they own, the data being used is a service that is not owned and while I don't agree with what at&t does, I can understand why they would discourage tethering and it is technically within their right to limit how their data is used. They/you could have picked another company that allows tethering but as a consequence you may face saturation from all those heavy tether users.

Which is the reason behind the detection. Same as throttling. With the explosion of bandwidth needed, the big companies cannot keep up. Hence why smaller companies offer unlimited data.

Hotspot workaround for Galaxy S8/+/Nougat

I was using Foxfi to Hotspot my Verizon Grandfathered UDP .... I Just got the Galaxy S8+ and found out the hard way that Google(nougat), Samsung and Verizon teamed up to kill Foxfi's Hotspot hack. Until we have an unlocked boatloader. root or another working exploit, Hotspot isnt going to work on the Galaxy S8..The good news is I was able to find a decent workaround with an app called "Net Share-no-root-tethering" from the play store... It uses Wifi-Direct to share your phones data plan.. It does the trick and I'm able to share my data plan with other wireless devices.. I was literally just about to return my S8+ rather than wait weeks or months for the devs to crack the vault.. Hope this helps ease the tetherless pain while we wait for a new exploit ..
Edit: Please note this is not an equal substitute for native Hotspot.. I found the speeds to be much slower, but for basic internet use like checking email, and web surfing the connection was adequate.

Weird since I have Verizon with the Unlimited plan and hotspot does not work, even though it IS included with the plan.
