Its HTC dead? OR - HTC U12+ Questions & Answers

As a Big Fan of HTC since the begining of SmartPhones i just was planing to Upgrade my M10 and get a brand new U12+ and what to see the U11/+ and the 12+ Subforums are like empty No development its like no one has that device?!
My question is whats going on with that Device?

Htc u12+ is amazing phone (great desing, performance, good sound, without notch), but most people prefer iphone, samsung, huawei and cheapest xiaomi . Htc have bad marketing .
Sorry for my english

I think the official HTC responses to what they will do in 2019 to fix things has been
- We are doing exciting things with 5G
- We are doing exciting things with VR
Will leave it to anyone else to determine what it means for things they haven't said.

There is no reason to switch to another brand just because of some articles of pessimistic journalists. You should buy and support the brand that you're convinced of.
Smartphones gets updates up to 2 years. In the worst case HTC stops building new phones, so what? (And I am sure they will not). After 2 years every phone is old.
I am very happy with my U12+. Superb and smooth software and awesome hardware with one of the best cameras out there.

I've noticed the same thing but here in the US HTC was a brand staple with Verizon. Verizon got all of the flagship devices from HTC and the other market got slightly lesser models. Anyway my point is that Verizon stopped carrying HTC and focused more on Sammy and the Motos. I think without the push from America's number one carrier excitement for the brand has waned. One commenter said something about not letting negative comments from reviewers affect your decision but honestly I only see negative comments in the forums. The reviews are usually good and in a lot of the comparison videos I've watched this device kicks butt, which is why I bought direct from HTC. Like you I've been an HTC fan since my very first smartphone, the Droid Incredible, and have owned nothing but HTC since. Probably the biggest drawback for me with this device is its durability. I've broken the back glass and the screen, something I've only done once before and all within the first few months. With my M9 and M10 I never worried about the durability and never used screen protectors one any of them. Now I've got this thing looking like a tank, in comparison.

Well yeah they switched to glass on the front and back. Sure this materials aren't that sturdy as aluminium bodys, we knew from One M7 up to the 10. But hey, everybody buying a glass phone knows the risk involved. As all others tend to switch to glass as well that shouldn't be an argument. Hardware/Software combination is what one has to look at nowadays.

I Agree with that i use HTC from the time where we got only Windows Mobile, and in the past 12 13 years i i used only the HTC flagships of course till the latest One series 7 8 i skipped 9 for a reason now im runing 10 i love this phone the last of its kind with the metal solid construction but with the time is time to upgrade a litle and officialy the 10 doesnt have alot of support here the official update stopped and thats it you are stuck.
Im thinking in your opinion guys for me most important factor is SOUND and CAMERA i guess eveyone using HTC love the same i read everywhere bull...its for the latest flagships that are not so good no big difference do you think its work the upgrade from 10 to 11 in some articles i wrote info that the camera is not good enought but on the same time i think is twice as good when i know HTC like a brand.
If you are me do you will exchange your 10 for an U11 ?
Thanks in advance

I'm a hardcore HTC fan. I now have both the U11 and U12+. After I figured out how to root the phones and tweak them to my liking I will stick with HTC until the end of days (or when they go belly up or I am pushing up daisies whichever comes first). With 5G coming soon, I hope that will give HTC the incentive to push the limits and come out with a highly competitive phone..

HTC U12+ is a flop with its crappy buttons on the side, poor camera, no updates, microphone issues and many other things. Do you remember the price it was sold for?

It has had several updates and first I heard of the camera being poor, taken some cracking shots with mine.
Not sure what the microphone or many other issues.
However, the buttons are 100% rubbish

As much as the touch buttons seem like a cool idea... They suck, simple as that. To grab a phone that has actual buttons that click when you press them and immediately react is fantastic. Many times on a U12+ I'm pressing the volume buttons at lease twice before it responds.
HTC had a fantastic and innovative idea and went for it. The HTC that we all grew to love and the risks they've taken over the years to give us brilliant things. However the buttons was one of those things that became a sore on their sides.
______
HTC is at a crossroads where they need to figure something out to stay in the game. They continue to lose so much money every year and the current business practice is what's causing it.
They should go back into the budget phone market and put a hold on the midrange/flagship phones. They might potentially save money by building cheap phones and selling them at a reasonable price where it will entice users. Focus on the 2year software development promise for all phones that are still within that time frame.
Continuing to sell flashship priced phones where they then sit in warehouses with minimal sales is killing them. Forget the U series, forget the midrange desire phones. Focus on cheap phones. Sale quality and well supported cheap phones which we all know is possible thanks to other companies and maybe. Maybe they can start seeing positive quarters. Then every two or three years if the budget is available release a flagship or high midrange. Do so expecting it to flop, but give it your all. If that happens and the sales are desirable, so be it. You planned for it. However if it sales like hot cakes, keep supporting it. Build trust within the community and for once do actual advertising for it. A cheap phone where advertisement is everywhere will sale. The last few flagships where all just word of mouth. Maybe one or two ads on websites here and there and the occasional retweet doesn't help at all.

You know that the button driver has a high efficiency mode, as well as a low power mode, do you!?
Holding the device in landscape mode watching videos the driver goes in to low energy mode, to prevent accidental changes of volumes by pressing them, after let's say 3 seconds. The gyro sensor then has to recognize a change in orientation, be it just slightly, to switch to high efficiency mode again. Thus the buttons become reactive again.
Yes that's a new way buttons work, but to understand if they do so correctly, one also has to know about how they are intended to work.

Android phone brands, pros and cons

This is for comparison on brands of Android phones. Observations are from general trends across different models, odd cases or low % problems are not taken into account.
HTC
Pros:
Frequent updates to Android builds.
Teflon housing.
Good positional sensors.
Much better customer support.
Cons:
Mediocre touchscreen sensors, although new models good-excellent, older ones poor.
Samsung
Pros:
Excellent touchscreen sensors
Cons:
Poor Android build updates.
Poor-terrible positional sensors, gyroscope, compass, accelerometer.
Touch screens not scratch proof.
Havent had any experience with other brands, please discuss and I will keep this post updated.
That\s an interesting observation, though i assume the newest models of each company are better and badder
HTC:
Frequent updates to the most current version of Android
Samsung:
Few if any updates to most current version of Android. Usually Samsung devices are one Android version behind, if not two.
-HTC-
-Good build quality
-SENSE UI is great as a stock launcher
-Camera can be better
Haven't owned any other brand Androids.
What about the Nexus S as a Samsung device, or does everyone around here consider that a Google device?
HTC is constant on their updates is probably the biggest pro.
I've got since nearly an Month an HTC Desire HD.
With Custom Roms, Rooted, etc. its so much better than any other Phones I saw.
Its Qualitativly rly great, everything looks great, akkucase is great (the place where its hold in ) and dont know.
But when i buy me a new when, i would take maybe the new SonyEricsonAndroid or LG Optimus Speed (2x).
I am loyal to HTC brand phones mainly because I've had the fewest problems with them (Android or otherwise) but I would have to say for me, the biggest con for every Android HTC that I've heard of or used personally is the terrible battery life. This is especially true for a stock HTC without root.

Samsung I would say, I do own both nexuses and they each have strong similarities to other makes in the brand, the benefit though is you get android build updates asap.

Well yes but usually it happens all relatively, and I found it definitely to be the case looking into HTCs latest major phone which is the Desire HD.
I did some research on touchscreens,
Samsung get their sensors from a Taiwan company called Sintek Photronic
HTC get them from an American company called Synaptics
Nexus One and HTC Desire are using an older generation of sensors (ClearPad 2000) where Desire HD is using the ClearPad 3000. The 3000 although acceptable in terms of usability they still contain minor quirks and the vast majority of HTC phones on the shelves at stores contain the older touch sensors.
I would not say HTCs build quality is of note(yet, I need a consensus), I would put it on par with Samsung's. The teflon housing gives an impression of superior build quality although not the same thing, even though it does give the phone significant longevity, it is for the materials used not how they are put together, I have seen HTC phones with for example the track sensor not centred for the opening in the case although working, and I have heard stories of the phones screen cracking with HTC acknowledging this.
"People sometimes forget that they don't go in pockets," said HTC.
And dust under the screen issues aswell.
BTW, HTC AMOLED panels are supplied by Samsung, how nice of them.
But they have switched to Sony for SLCD due to the shortage.
HTC tend to have their CPUs run at rated clockspeeds, and Motorolla tend to underclock their CPUs according to this article on comparisons:
http://www.tested.com/news/htc-vs-motorola-vs-samsung-who-builds-the-best-android-phones/1345/
Hence the battery lives.
I Checked out my friends incredible s today, after a brief touchscreen comparison with my nexus s it felt on par with it, infact I got my nexus s to screw up a bit which I hadnt seen before, it wasnt much of a test but I think synaptics could be on its way to having possibly the best touch screens as it is a massive improvement in quality over the nexus one and even desire.
Another thing, my nexus s screen is not scratch proof.
With everything in consideration now I think HTC is far superior to samsung overall for android phones.
Compared
I also compared Samsung and HTC my sister got her HTC Desire Z 4 weeks ago and my father has his Samsung Galaxy S for 2 month or something like that he had some problems with a broken speaker and it was quite difficult to talk to someone in the helpcenter who could help him ( this time we didnt know that it was an hardware failure) My sis is not the fittest in handling with smartphones and she had some questions converning her new phone and she got very fast a employed that helped her so i would prefer HTC too
I would glue 106 samsung android phones together to make a step stool to reach 1 htc android phone sitting on a shelf just out of reach.
Personally I believe HTC blows Samsung out of the water. I've had both and the biggest downfall with Samsung is there update policy. You never get updates. I gave up waiting for Froyo so I went to the HTC Evo 4G and now with the killer Rom from xxxvirusxxx I'm running Android 2.3 Gingerbread !!
Its sad no one can offer some insight into motorolla, next time I get the chance and I have time at the shops I will try take a look at one and check out its touch sensor panel, general hardware, and check if the demo has scratches on the screen.

Motorola has a strict policy on locked bootloaders coupled with bad update schedules. I would steer clear of them unless your buying the new Vanilla Android device coming to Virgin Mobile.
I have a samsung galaxy s captivate... one of the best phones i've ever owned
HTC produces the best Androids.
HTC would be the perfect manufacturer if they could put AMOLED back to their phones just as the good ol' Desire (before it decided to use SLCD) and unlock the phones, which they has promised.
I have a HTC Desire and a Samsung Galaxy S at work, they feel mostly the same but the Samsung is somehow a bit laggy sometimes.
And my brother has a Huawei U8800 and i would still have the HTC over that one as well.
Finally got around to checking out a Motorolla, the new Razr.
Could not really conclude much as it is a new gen phone without much to compare it with. So I am just gonna mention my observations.
It straight away looks and feels very well built but soon gave the impression of "just not a HTC".
Assembled in China is embossed into the kevlar at the back, dont know why this is not a sticker seeing as though the company is American and not Chinese.
The phone is top heavy meaning the weight is at the earpeice so when you hold it, it feels unbalanced, although not as bad as the nexus one.
They claim it is waterproof to a rating that suggests you could safely use it in the shower but I dont think anyone has tried yet and the owner did not want to be the 1st.
The volume and power buttons did not feel clicky, they rather felt rubbery, and the volume button placed in a non intuitive position as a tiny rocker, I imagine the lack of feedback on the buttons is either due to how thin the phone is or it being waterproof, this is nitpicking though but an observation none the less.
The edges of the phone are made of plastic, I imagine this is due to reception reasons or to absorb a drop.
Comparing the pentile screen to an iPhone 4 and nexus S(slcd) and Desire all side by side, the color reproduction is inbetween the nexus S and the Desire, tending more towards the Desire with overly rich but not neon greens, the white balance was also slightly off.
The text sharpness was practically as good as the SLCD nexus S and iPhone's.
The touch sensor used was quiet good, not as good as the iPhone's though which seems to still be years ahead somehow
It registered atleast 10 simultaneous touches like a tablet would, it was not impressive but could not find any major faults.
Did not get the chance to test the compass, GPS etc but will hear back from the owner and update this post.

[Q] potential Sensation user-Critical question. To buy or not to buy?

Hello to everybody in the communtity!
I am interested in buying this device. However, after spending 2 hours reading through the touch screen responsiveness problem in the Sensation General thread, I became hesitant and skeptic to purchase it. Can you say anything that will alleviate and mitigate my fears? Is it safe to buy 100% or will I have to replace it after a month or so? Do I have to ask the seller for a specific model that does not have the aforementioned issues?
Thank you in advance for aiding me in the quest to replace my crappy Samsung Omnia which I solemnly detest
Well I use to have the problem but only sometimes when swyping screens.I no longer have it and had totaly forgotten about it I doubt the problem is still present in new batches. But my phone is very responsive now

Is it because you used some kind of fix for the screen, or it just magically disappeared?
even if there is 10% chance I get the problem it's a no-deal for me. I cannot invest that much money to a flagship top-tier phone if it instantly malfunctions... Can anybody else alleviate my concerns?
Its a great phone. If by chance you do end up in the 10 percent their is a fix on the forums some where you just have to do a search. I would say get the phone from the support in these forums.
32 custom built roms and counting. Noob proof step by step rooting and unlocking. Uncountable ways to modify the phone. Every phone has its problems, but I can honestly say that I haven't found a problem that didn't have a fix on these forums.

Tell them you want try out the phone you want to buy before you pay for it.
I never suffered any kind of problem from the screen being unresponsive, but the only problem (if you wish to call it a problem, in my case it's not) is the slightly weak WiFi signal, if I am 2 rooms away from the router the signal drop significantly, and there is creaking on the bottom right of the phone other than that the phone is perfect, most ppl changed their back cover and the creaking sound was gone.

Any further feedback?? I am looking for a reliable handset... should I go to an alternate device?
Brilliant device, didn't have any problems with it.

its a risk one has to take mate,
i know a few of my friends have to return their iPhone4 due to various hardware defects.
nothing is perfect in the smartphone world sadly
but it makes our life easier with a community such as XDA
so welcome
My advice...Buy! Or go and read at the Samsung Galaxy S2 tread and read about that phone...you only read the negative items/ problems here...
About every phone you can read tons of info, at the end of the day you will be confused which phone to buy as they all suffer from little probems.
There are a lot of Sensation owners out there who are happy with their phone and dont have problems with it...I am one of them!
Have my sensation almost 4 weeks now...its rooted, S-off and I got rid of the Orange rom!
As already stated in this tread, if you have problems with your device you will find a solution here at XDA...
No problems here either, had since June no issues at all. Great phone.

You shouldn't buy it because as technology goes something always comes out better a month later. I haven't had problems and I think it's a excellent phone but you should look for what's about to come out next.

Yeah I guess there is warranty but I read that HTC does not recognize that problem. And even then, in Greece HTC service is not that good with a single service center in the whole country and huge delays in product replacement...

I would say do not buy the HTC Sensation.
It has to many serious flaws/issues for a flagship phone and yes, in my opinion the issues on the Sensation is more frequent then on other models.
I read alot in here and also among Swedish Android forums and I've owned not less than 3 faulty Sensations in about a weeks time till I gave up and asked for a refund instead. The Sensation is a sloppy job from HTC in mine (and MANY others) opinion.
The biggest issues seems to be:
1. Dust under the screen (one of mine was switched because of that. Appeared after about 2 days of use. In an office enviroment.)
2. Unresponsive touchscreen issues/Grounding problems.
3. A battery cover that does'nt fit the phone to well. Makes creaking sounds and makes the vibrator sound like a dying cat (one of mine had that one to). And seriously? Who in the world want to use a "fix" (read: put a folded post-it note between the phone and the cover to make it tighter) on there 4-500$ phone!
4. Issues with the hardware buttons, loose, unresponsive etc. (Had that one aswell. The volumerocker almost fell off)
5. The "wifi-deathgrip". This one I've never experienced!
6. Bad microphone/s and/or crackling speaker. An big issue amongst many it seems.
Ok so there you have my opinion
Trust me, I TRIED to love the Sensation. I've ALWAYS liked HTC phones. But this time, for a flagship phone, I think they've messed up.
Every phone has it's problems, thats for sure though. It just seems to me that the Sensation has a higher frequency in there troubles with this specifik phone and I just don't have time for homemade fixes, returning device after device etc. Especially not for a newer phone as expensive as this one.
For a phone that lives on it's "well built" reputation, I demand more. Sure the Sensation FEELS well built and sturdy, but thats just the feeling. The whole "uni" design just seems to vulnarable......
Well atleast now you got another opinion!

[Review] HTC One X vs. HTC One

I've been using an HTC One X from AT&T since last summer on Scott's various CleanROMs and have really enjoyed the phone. It was excellent. Then, the HTC One was announced. I was immediately envious and having already used my upgrade, I knew it would be a long time before I had one.
A couple of weeks ago, I was listening to SiriusXM on my HTC One X via LG's bluetooth headset and I was just having a grand time until I pulled the phone from my pocket to notice that the screen was no longer lighting up. It was responsive, the phone worked, touch worked, but you couldn't see anything. AT&T replaced it under warranty and I had a brand new HTC One X on the 3.18 unhackablefornow update.
I couldn't live like that. I tried. I spent a week hating my phone, the very hardware I'd loved for so long.
After the wife got sick of me complaining, I got the demand to go buy whatever I wanted if I'd just stop complaining. I got the HTC One Dev Edition and have had a couple of days with it. It's really nice, feels great in hand, the front speakers sound great, Blinkfeed is annoying, but the rest is fine. The 64gb is really the only thing that is dramatically different though. The IR remote is sort of cool I suppose, but nothing that I'll probably use with any real frequency. I like that the USB hole is in the bottom now too instead of hanging out the side so awkwardly.
The point of all this? For those with your HTC One Xes that are just rocking along and doing exactly what you like, there's hardly a reason to "upgrade". I like certainly like the beveled screen on the One X more--the One has a raised edge, so exactly the opposite of how smooth and nice the One X is. The aluminum case is sure slick looking and feels nice, but I like the rubberized plastic on the One X. It sits nicer on your lap/leg/dash/sofa/etc. too. And for some reason, the damn on/off button is moved to the other side of the phone. I'll get used to that I suppose, but why? It was in a fine spot before on the previous generation, why move it?
Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to bash HTC. Both phones are excellent and w/ the 64gb, it's sort of the phone I've always looked forward to owning so my whole music collection could be at my finger tips. If you're on the fence though, there's not a lot of reason to ditch that reliable device we've all loved over the past year. Enjoy it and wait for the next thing and buy it when you're due for an upgrade, not for $650.
I hope that helps some of you that were drooling every time the thing came on the TV like I was.
Hopefully there will be an exploit for the One X on 3.18 one of these days and I'll turn the new One X into a great little back up phone/tablet.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree, having now owned both. I just walked into an AT&T store to check it out in person several days before upgrading, and after flipping through the UI, I was not 100% impressed with it compared to the One X. I mean, sure, the specs are an improvement by comparison and it's something that I'm happy with purchasing, but if my HOX wasn't broken and/or I wasn't able to get an upgrade, I would have been ok with saving my money.
I really like the build quality. I don't have any of the crazy gaps people are talking about. It feels nice, looks nice, and sounds great.
What I don't like compared to the HOX is Sense 5. I really thought it was going to be better than Sense 4+ but it's not. I haven't rooted/unlocked it, and have no immediate plans to, but I hate how I can't edit the icons on the dock. Also, the dock follows you into the app tray. That SUCKS. Blink feed is annoying and you can't disable it...only change your homescreen to another tile. I also find that I like the capacitive buttons on the HOX way better. Half the time, they don't light up on the One and aren't that sensitive. And, what's the deal with HTC and hating capacitive buttons?! THe Inspire 4G had 4 buttons, the HOX had 3, and now the One has 2! Pretty soon, we'll only have "One." (See what I did there ) One final thing that seems annoying is for me, at least, when the display is on Auto Brightness, I seen to experience a weird flicker on the display. I don't know if it's just me, my particular phone, or what, but it is annoying.
If you need to have the latest and greatest, then stop reading this pointless drivel and go buy one. Otherwise, root and rom on with your HOX.
Of course, these are just my 2 cents. I could be wrong.

Thanks! Ive been on the fence, but don't have an upgrade. this makes me feel a little better
the biggest difference is
battery life and speakers
- both have amazing screen (the htc one seems to have better whites imo, and more a bit more color, and its a bit sharper, but the one x is a bit brighter and has the floating screen effect that the one sadly doesnt have)
- both are snappy (htc one, a bit faster)
cameras - both plus and negatives, i would say HTC ONE (overall), htc one x takes nice images in sunlight though
but yeah, the speaker on the one x is a disgrace, its weird how they went from worst speaker to best speakers lol
Just placed my order for the One on T-mobile. My One XL needs a new mainboard so I guess it's just going to be a nice paperweight for the time being.
I'm really curious to see how well I like it. I'll get it on Tuesday. I only played around with the display model at bestbuy but it was locked up tighter than fort knox.. You couldn't even swipe over the screen because it had a security lock covering the whole ting.
Which one to grab!
I have ordered One XL last week after lots of hesitation between it and the One, and this review from someone who owns both kinda support my choice, thanks
I have played with both devices in store, of course studied specs/hardware of both and worked out what my needs are and what I can/can't live with. I never buy phones on contracts so cost is an important factor here. My personal choice is based mainly on following:
ONE:
Pros: design, battery, cpu
Cons: the worst (for me) is the 2 buttons-logo combination instead for the usual and more reasonable 3 buttons, I can't get pass this for a $$$ flagship. Expensive compared to my other option, poor DIY-repairability which is important for me (regardless of warranty status).
ONE XL:
Pros: design, has 3 capacitive buttons, good deals for sim-free or pay as you go with available cheap carrier unlocking (Europe), much better DIY-repairability.
Cons: battery but can be changed to HOX+ battery 2100 mAh.
Cheers!
I've played with the (white) One and the S4 in the store. I hated the fact that the one is longer and somewhat bigger than the HOX. Although I have 2 available upgrades on my family plan, both att unlimited data grandfathered, I left the store without a new device. They didn't have any black ones at the time, I'll go back again to check that one out... Otherwise don't feel like upgrading.

Hmm.. How about that! Thanks!
I own both phones. I've had the One XL since launch day (1 year, 9 days ago) and I bought the One a couple of days ago as a replacement. Perhaps I can shed some light on the differences between the two phones for those of you who are considering one of the two. Sorry for the long post, but I felt I should be thorough.
HTC One vs HTC One XL Comparison
This is just a strict comparison about random aspects of the two phones... There isn't really any order to it; it's more of just a long rant about the differences. I'll start off the comparison in my favorite way - looking at what's wrong with the new device.
Cons of the HTC One:
Physical Design: Since the plastic sides of the silver phone is white, the whole aluminum body looks white if you give it a quick glance. I hate white phones with a passion but aluminum is my favorite color so it's a trade off for me. Of course, this is a personal preference and will vary depending on the user. Other items regarding the physical layout of the phone include the size. The One is the same width as the One XL but it is slightly longer. If you were to take the One XL and add on a second row of capacitive buttons they would be the same size. Personally, I feel that the One's "aspect ratio" is better, but the phone is kind of long for my tastes. The iPhone 5 is a better size in my opinion, but again, this is just personal preference. Another thing that may or may not be of concern to you depending on whether you use a case is how easily the phone slips into your pocket. The One has sharp edges (similar to a macbook) so it doesn't slip into your pocket as easily. Similarly, since the edges are all made out of aluminum the phone will dent if you drop it on a hard surface. (So don't drop it)
Capacative Buttons: The One only has 2 capacitive buttons compared to the 3 that the One XL has which is super annoying. HTC did this to comply with Google's design guidelines but other manufacturers *cough* Samsung *cough* have ignored this suggestion. They should have made the HTC logo a capacitive button as well. The touch pad doesn't fully extend that far off the screen, so even with a custom kernel the HTC logo only works "sometimes" as a button. I believe this is an engineering problem that could be attributed to AT&T. The HTC logo is not clear and it does not light up; it is painted on underneath the screen - the same as the logo at the top of the One XL's screen - in metallic lettering. If they had put a capacitive sensor above the logo it would constantly interfere with the metallic paint (This is my personal theory, but I think it's sound).
Another disadvantage of the One is the software isn't as mature as the One XL. The One XL is at the peak of it's development cycle; there are very few bugs and everything has been optimized. The One is new to the game and we're still waiting for HTC to release new kernel sources along with everything else. Developers are still trying to figure out how to work with the phone. The developer of the ROM I use, for instance, doesn't even own the phone yet!
Carrier Loyalty: As with the One XL, AT&T gets special privileges. AT&T is the only carrier who gets a black HTC One. They're also the only carrier who offers a 64GB version (The Developer Edition also has a 64GB version but it is only offered in silver).
Pros of the HTC One:
The HTC One isn't all bad though, not by a long shot. It has many numerous advantages over the One XL.
3rd Party Support: One of the best things about the One is that the phone is standardized among all carriers. You can buy a case in the Sprint store and it will work on your T-Mobile One. Additionally, all GSM phones (International, AT&T, T-Mobile, Developer Edition) can flash the same ROMs without having to worry about bricking the device. In many ROMs you just select what version you'd like your phone to be optimized for. This helps with development immensely! I'm so glad HTC did this. Supposedly the One will also be HTC's only flagship phone for this year, so you don't have to worry about an HTC One+ coming out in 4 months. I'm also very pleased to see that every carrier has put out advertisements for the One. I've seen many of them all over TV and even some in movie theaters. This is where HTC messed up last year. Unless the individual phone sells well 3rd parties won't make accessories for it.
The only real difference between the GSM variants is that the T-Mobile version includes more radio bands. Thus, if you want to get the most versatile version like me, get the T-Mobile version. It's also unbranded so it has no logos (aside from the "beatsaudio" logo on the back which the One XL also has)!
Physical Construction: The HTC One feels very solid in your hand thanks to the "zero-gap" construction. This means that the entire back/sides of the phone are all one piece. The plastic accents are all bonded to the aluminum backing, so it is similar to the One XL in that regard. Because the aluminum and plastic is CNC'd out in one piece you can consider it as a single unit; you will never feel the plastic injections with your finger unless you have a defective unit. It's somewhat similar to the unibody design of the One XL minus the speaker grills which are separate pieces - you can feel the transition between those pieces and the screen. This is normal.
Audio and Video Recording: The recording quality of the One is indisputable. It is simply superb. You can record video at a night club and actually enjoy the music and video afterwards. The microphone is insanely good. The video camera is designed to excel under low light conditions. One consequence of this is that the One's camera is only 4MP (slightly higher than 1080p) instead if the XL's 8MP. This means that the camera is great for what most people will use it for, but unfortunately I can no longer carry around my phone as a dedicated camera replacement (for vacations and things where I want a little better picture quality).
Performance: The One is FAST! Using 3DMark's new application you can test the gaming performance among various platforms. The HTC One GPU is actually more powerful than a nVidia 7900GS videocard (think precursor to the 8800GT)! I actually had one of those in my gaming PC a couple of years ago. To me this is insane. To think that my phone is more powerful than the higher-end gaming PC I built in 2006 (in some tests).
Battery Life: The battery life in the One is pretty good. I'm getting around 4.5 hours of on-screen time but I'm still tuning the phone. I've only had it for 3 days. The battery isn't even settled yet. I'm sure in 2 weeks I'll be seeing 7+ hours on-screen time once I get everything sorted out.
IR Remote: One small thing that no one thinks of is the HTC One's IR blaster integrated into the One's power button. You can now control all of your home theater equipment using your phone. This is very handy for people like me who always find themselves on the couch with their phone in their hand but don't want to take the time to search for the remote. HTC even includes a little TV guide app that lets you select a specific show and it will automatically change the channel for you. I like this!
Fixes from other Phones: The HTC One's notification LED is fixed from the One XL. It is bright and you can actually see it from all angles. The HTC One XL has an almost useless notification LED and can only be viewed when looking from the phone straight on. I once had a coworker stare at my One XL for 2 minutes before he asked me whether something was blinking. He thought it was but he wasn't entirely sure. The One has solved this very annoying problem.
Storage Space: The One has much more storage space than the One XL. The 32GB version has about 25GB of usable space where as the 16GB One XL only has about 9GB. This is nice if you're thinking about replacing an MP3 player or like to have mobile videos stored locally.
This is all I can stand to type for now. I'm sure I forgot stuff but I'll have to wait until I'm at a computer to finish the comparison. If you liked the review click thanks please.

I was in the unique position that I needed to switch to T-Mobile so I got it from their online store. After taxes it came out to $144 up front, then I pay for the rest of the phone $20 a month for... Idk, 24 months I think. Regardless of how much you spend up front, the phone itself is $600. Early termination fees on the HOXL with AT&T is at least $205 if you bought the phone when it came out.
If you liked my review please click thanks.

If i'm busy at work (read: not procrastinating on my phone all day), it's lasted me two days with about 30% left. A lot better than my One XL.
I have both the One X and the One and in my opinion the One is much better than the One X. I still love both phones but the One is much more responsive, little to no hiccups at all unlike my One X, sense 5 is so much better than sense 4, and the speakers are amazing. Also battery life is much better on the one. I'm still on stock AT&T on my One and it's much snappier and more responsive than my One X ever was on cleanrom or viperxl.

Looking to join you guys soon! I think I've just about pushed my one x as far as it'll go and I'm ready to step it up a bit
Ugh, it is soooo tempting to get the One, especially with T-Mobile getting rid of the 2-year crap... now just gotta find a new job.

incredibly disappointed in the M8...

So, after spending a few years using HTC products (coming from Apple)...I have to say that I am increasingly disappointed with my "NEW" M8... And I'm sure all the die yards out there (which I was up until the M8, will attack me for saying this...) But, this phone is singularly the most disappointing thing that has ever happened to me.
I went from the iPhone 4 to the desire to the DNA to the M7 to the M8... And for the first 3 jumps, was incredibly pleased... Until now.
I have essentially spent $600 on a bigger M7. With the loss of the capacative buttons, and addition of the soft nav keys, I am left with the same size screen... Stock kernel adds almost no performance increase over a nodded M7 kernel... And the "actions to wake/sleep" aren't really that exciting coming from my M7..
The ONLY two things that I see as an upgrade are the battery (to be fair, is WAY better) and the option to use an AD card. There still is NO inductive charging in HTC's flagship... Yes, the screen size is increased, but lost to the soft nav keys, the camera that was garbage in the M7 is garbage in the M8... And the addition of a depth sensor satisfies exactly 4 people on the planet...
Pile that on top of the fact that I am now writti g from my 3rd M8 (I've had the phone(s) for a whopping 17 days...And am on my 3rd... My first had some messed up LCD bleed out of the box... My second wouldn't detect headphone removal... So... 17 days and $1800 worth of phone later, I'm still left with a feeling of jealousy as I look at my girlfriend's unrooted S5, seeing her using her full screen, inductive charging, a phone that weighs WAY less, and still has just as goon battery life and an infinitely better camera... Save for her lack of front facing camera... I am routinely jealous... And it's sad... Sad to have whY should be an amazing device, constantly showing that so little attention was given by the engineers at HTC as to what their customers wanted.. Sad..Sad...Sad...
So... Patiently waiting for the VZW S5 to get root, and I think I will leave this HTC trend behind...
I can relate to the headphone issues, that was very irritating. Now I am scared to plug any head phones in ... That was my second device.. My first device had air bubbles under the screen... HTC quality inspection sucks IMO.

Are you really suprised that the m8 is basically a m7 I mean anyone that looked at the specs should have reallized the m8 was a m7 with a bigger battery and a second crappy camera lol??? I mean come on lol having said that the s5 is a cheaply made piece of crap HTC may have issues out of the box but build quality is on a different level compared to Samsung anything.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
I've had zeros issues with mine and everything has been working great. The S5 looks good too, but touch wiz and a locked up bootloader with probably no way to unlock completely kill any samsung for me. I understand the camera isn't the best. but it works well enough for a phone and is fast and better in low light than any of my previous phones. If I wanted to take good pictures I'd use my DSLR anyways. Sound's like you've had some bad luck and like the S5 more anyways. Get whatever makes you happy no reason to spend so much on it if it doesn't.
Had mine since day one and haven't had one single issue. Used to be a Sammy fanboy before I traded my S4 for an M7 last year and I haven't looked back since. The S5 doesn't even interest me. Lol

I have had HTC phones for a long time running and have also (and still do) have phones from Samsung (Note 3) and Sony (Xperia Z). It sounds to me like you have had some bad luck when it comes to the M8 and I certainly can understand why you are upset. One of my favorite things to do is to Mod my phone in various ways and I have always had that ability when it comes to HTC unlike Samsung. As the other poster said, The M8 is an updated version of the M7 not a ground breaking jump to something new. Apple is the reigning king of this by far. This is not a completely new model just an update of an already popular phone. One thing I do totally agree with you is about the camera. Many people believe the higher the megapixel the better picture will be. This is far from the truth. All a higher megapixel rating does is add pixels to an image which is useful for printing large format photos and cropping. That all being said, I feel like HTC could have done more to enhance the camera taking abilities of the phone. If I want to take a picture that counts I reach for my real (DSLR) camera. I love my M8 and loved my M7. I am certain that if the S5 is what you want there will be many willing buyers of your M8 to allow you to switch over to the S5. Everyone has different experiences and opinions so I am by no means going to say you are wrong. What I will say is as far as my M8 is concerned I am completely satisfied. Good luck jumping on the Samsung train.

I too have a DSLR camera (Canon T4i... and i DIDNT buy the T5i because canon admitted that the T5i JUST added really good movie quality... quality that you can obtain by adding magic lantern... AND THEY ADMIT IT!!! (google it if you dont believe me)... and i didnt buy a D60 BECAUSE im not an amazing photographer, looking to get on the cover of NatGeo... and i knew i would get what i expected because canon was honest.. and i spent what i spent... because canon was honest... The garbage that HTC spews about their camera is nothing more than that.. its garbage... You CAN NOT refocus a shot with your M8.. you can add blur to it.. and it takes about 30 seconds to do so.. but i can do the same in photoshop in about half the time... and have been able to do so WITH ANY PHOTO EVER TAKEN... without 2 cameras...
As for megapixels.. you are right, to a degree.. megapixels are over rated.. you know what is under rated? adding a BETTER camera to a phone that is replacing its predecessor... they could have called it a 6MP CMOS.. and i would have felt better... but, to add exactly the same camera, with exactly the same screen size (after the soft nav) as my old phone? WTF!!! and, you know... if they hadnt used the same size HTC border at the bottom, but rather had given me edge to edge screen... fine.. but frankly, HOW DO YOU NOT FEEL RIPPED OFF? (seriously... put your M7 next to your M8... and start doing REAL comparisons... stop being biased because it's an HTC product...)
and im not saying the S5 is my direction... frankly, im leaning more severe.. thinking an i product... at least when they steal all of my money, i know im getting a remake of the last model because they added an S to it and charged $300 more for it...
FYI... I have since switched back to my M7... i really did love it as a phone... wasnt a fan of losing inductive charging... but, whatever.. the rest made up for it from the DNA... The M8 though... GARBAGE
(On a side note.. yes, the headphones.. F*ing AMAZEBALLS!!!... they actually do sound better on my M8 and M7 than my beats in ear buds do)...
I don't have much to dispute about what your saying about the camera. But if I was buying a phone for only a camera it wouldn't be an HTC or a Samsung. Overall I knew what I was getting into and I am pleased.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I've accepted the downsides to the M8, and if the purchase of it has taught me anything, it's made me aware of what I'm really looking for in a phone. I'm really really hoping Verizon picks up the Sony Z2, and that development is not locked down. Until the next big thing comes along, I'm ok with the M8.
Strange, isn't there supposed to be an onslaught of hate posts defending the M8 because you expressed a completely justified dissatisfaction? Aren't moderators supposed to be blathering on about how a "general" thread is apparently not place to discuss such things?

I am hereby renaming the M8 ... the Heavier M7... the HM7 for short...
It is a little sad that the defense for the M8 thus-far is "I'm generally satisfied" with mine...

I love mine. I've had almost every single phone Verizon has offered in the past five or six years since I worked for them. M8 is definitely the best phone I've ever owned.
The color of the camera and dynamic range are spectacular. People wonder why the s5 has brighter pictures and its because of software post processing which degrades the quality of the image. The HTC One series is truly a photographer's phone. It takes beautiful raw images and then let's you, the user, post process the way you like.
As for the build vs the m7, the m8 is far better feeling and sturdier.
I understand what you are saying with your original post. But, there aren't going to be mind blowing new things every year. If that's what you want, then but a phone every second or third year. Don't post disappointments on here, bashing a perfectly good phone for the following year. HTC did great, you just don't know how or what to expect from mobile technology.
To add, sorry you had some lemons, but you're one of few. It happens. Move on. And the weight..it's 15 grams. Do you know how little a gram is?! Stop majoring on the minor my friend.

The M8 is an upgraded M7... Period! Just like the S5 is an upgraded S4 and so on. If you are looking for something to blow your mind, it is not yet available. This market is getting to a point where you will probably only see minor spec bumps with ANY manufacturer. I love the M8 cause of the build and overall snappiness of the device. It is much quicker than the M7 in all tasks due to the upgraded hardware. Just sold my T-Mobile S5 and I am very grateful I did cause TouchWiz is hideous! I realized why I ditched Samsung long ago. There really is no other competition as far as Verizon phones go IMO. This has and will have a huge development following and that is few and far between nowadays, especially with Verizon. You can always wait for the iPhone 6?? Lol

And quick charge 2.0!!! It's insanely fast charging!! There are so many nice upgrades to this gorgeous phone. And, unlike the s5, they are well put together lol.

Yup!
I'm digging my m8, Completely happy with it. Besides having to play with the camera settings for my best photo.

Hope you enjoy the s5. It will get root sometime in the next few months in sure but with that gawd awful safe strap and no CM. The s4 was made by playschool but holy sh*t the s5 takes it to a whole new level. It feels so cheap that it could pass for a fake toy if you put a sticker on the screen. Not too mention is probably slow and clunky with its awful touchwiz ui. Don't get me wrong, TW has potential, but they need to hire some real programmers to write their software because there is no excuse for the s4 or 5 to be as slow as they are when the m7 and m8 blaze through everything with the exact same hardware. Is the m8 a worthy upgrade from an m7? I think so. It's not a night and day difference but anyone that can read should have known that.

The "defense"... Uhhhhhhhhhh... Sounds like you're trying to bait for something..
Also, the weight thing is negligible at best... If you truly can tell a night and day difference? You've gotta work out some more.
The M8, in my opinion, is far better than the Samsung's I've sporadically owned.. And as for just an "upgraded" m7? Let's talk about Samsung.... And Apple... And LG.......... Uhhhhh

Nah, the M8 is the best smartphone experience available right now. Samsung's Touchwiz is marred by issues in its design and performance. Stock software is VERY important nowadays since getting root, let alone a stable AOSP ROM for said device, is much more difficult nowadays. Samsung has shown that they refuse to evolve in this way and will eventually fall behind. Even Apple managed to update their user interface.
I agree that HTC needs to step up their quality control. I understand they're trying to get back into the black but I too went through 2 devices prior to having this third acceptable one.
The Z2 comes close, but I find Sony's overlay to be behind as well. HTC really knocked it out of the park with Sense 6.

This is all personal preference. If you're so disappointed with your m8 you probably should've researched more before buying it. Possibly looking at reviews that literally all pointed out the capacitive button change and same camera quality as the m7.
Every device is going to have quirks about it that isn't perfect, so what? This phone is fantastic in every way, and nitpicking little details like the weight of the device or camera quality are things you should've researched before making a $600 purchase.
By the way, a little note on the camera, every single person who have seen some of the photos I've taken have been amazed at the quality. 70% are iPhone users. I just took a group photo yesterday with my phone, and my friend used her iPhone 5s. Everyone in the group liked my photo more, with both photos in the exact same conditions.
Give the camera a chance before you knock it, I've had nothing but great results.

U12+ worth buying?

I am looking to possibly get a new phone. I used to be heavily into rooting my phone back in the day with the older HTC phones. I saw that I could get an unlocked HTC U12+ for $499 on the HTC website. Is the U12+ a good phone? How is the build quality? How is the software/fireware? How often is the U12+ updated? Is it worth buying? Or should I get a different brand of phone? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

I think i had something like 50/60 smartphones in last 3 years, I bought mine for 220€ I'm not kidding don't know what the seller thought putting It so low but i did the best bargain of my Life and with this phone i stopped changing phones like a mad. For me this phone has everything, with pie even a good battery Life, it's not the best battery Life out there and in mine touchscreen Is sometimes i can suffering a bit from mistouch ( maybe this was the reason behind the price of mine Who know! ) But apart from this 2 aspect and updates imho can still be bought for 350/370 euros, 400 or 500 it's no. Just wanted to share my esperience but i know everyone has his priorities.
This phone has, ip68, notification led, good display qhd, Crazy good audio, 5 microphones, good form factor not too big or heavy, good battery, Crazy good cameras/videos with ois+eis and still competes with the best out there today, go and check photo tools on gsmarena, i did myself and it's there. Noone ever judge or put attention to It but a it has powerful flash too.
For capacitive buttons it's only a matter of habit, after One day or two you feel good and it's Better touch gently than try pressing like Crazy something that cannot be pressed, even with a full cover on.
One and only REAL issue is updates. Htc simply suck at updating their flagship phones. The other smaller issue is the buttons with a case in landscape mode, they can be a bit retarded. Otherwise its like SIRKRA said, cameras are insane, audio aswell
