So, after spending a few years using HTC products (coming from Apple)...I have to say that I am increasingly disappointed with my "NEW" M8... And I'm sure all the die yards out there (which I was up until the M8, will attack me for saying this...) But, this phone is singularly the most disappointing thing that has ever happened to me.
I went from the iPhone 4 to the desire to the DNA to the M7 to the M8... And for the first 3 jumps, was incredibly pleased... Until now.
I have essentially spent $600 on a bigger M7. With the loss of the capacative buttons, and addition of the soft nav keys, I am left with the same size screen... Stock kernel adds almost no performance increase over a nodded M7 kernel... And the "actions to wake/sleep" aren't really that exciting coming from my M7..
The ONLY two things that I see as an upgrade are the battery (to be fair, is WAY better) and the option to use an AD card. There still is NO inductive charging in HTC's flagship... Yes, the screen size is increased, but lost to the soft nav keys, the camera that was garbage in the M7 is garbage in the M8... And the addition of a depth sensor satisfies exactly 4 people on the planet...
Pile that on top of the fact that I am now writti g from my 3rd M8 (I've had the phone(s) for a whopping 17 days...And am on my 3rd... My first had some messed up LCD bleed out of the box... My second wouldn't detect headphone removal... So... 17 days and $1800 worth of phone later, I'm still left with a feeling of jealousy as I look at my girlfriend's unrooted S5, seeing her using her full screen, inductive charging, a phone that weighs WAY less, and still has just as goon battery life and an infinitely better camera... Save for her lack of front facing camera... I am routinely jealous... And it's sad... Sad to have whY should be an amazing device, constantly showing that so little attention was given by the engineers at HTC as to what their customers wanted.. Sad..Sad...Sad...
So... Patiently waiting for the VZW S5 to get root, and I think I will leave this HTC trend behind...
I can relate to the headphone issues, that was very irritating.Now I am scared to plug any head phones in ... That was my second device.. My first device had air bubbles under the screen... HTC quality inspection sucks IMO.

Are you really suprised that the m8 is basically a m7 I mean anyone that looked at the specs should have reallized the m8 was a m7 with a bigger battery and a second crappy camera lol??? I mean come on lol having said that the s5 is a cheaply made piece of crap HTC may have issues out of the box but build quality is on a different level compared to Samsung anything.

I've had zeros issues with mine and everything has been working great. The S5 looks good too, but touch wiz and a locked up bootloader with probably no way to unlock completely kill any samsung for me. I understand the camera isn't the best. but it works well enough for a phone and is fast and better in low light than any of my previous phones. If I wanted to take good pictures I'd use my DSLR anyways. Sound's like you've had some bad luck and like the S5 more anyways. Get whatever makes you happy no reason to spend so much on it if it doesn't.
Had mine since day one and haven't had one single issue. Used to be a Sammy fanboy before I traded my S4 for an M7 last year and I haven't looked back since. The S5 doesn't even interest me. Lol

It sounds to me like you have had some bad luck when it comes to the M8 and I certainly can understand why you are upset. One of my favorite things to do is to Mod my phone in various ways and I have always had that ability when it comes to HTC unlike Samsung. As the other poster said, The M8 is an updated version of the M7 not a ground breaking jump to something new. Apple is the reigning king of this by far. This is not a completely new model just an update of an already popular phone. One thing I do totally agree with you is about the camera. Many people believe the higher the megapixel the better picture will be. This is far from the truth. All a higher megapixel rating does is add pixels to an image which is useful for printing large format photos and cropping. That all being said, I feel like HTC could have done more to enhance the camera taking abilities of the phone. If I want to take a picture that counts I reach for my real (DSLR) camera. I love my M8 and loved my M7. I am certain that if the S5 is what you want there will be many willing buyers of your M8 to allow you to switch over to the S5. Everyone has different experiences and opinions so I am by no means going to say you are wrong. What I will say is as far as my M8 is concerned I am completely satisfied. I too have a DSLR camera (Canon T4i... and i DIDNT buy the T5i because canon admitted that the T5i JUST added really good movie quality... quality that you can obtain by adding magic lantern... AND THEY ADMIT IT!!! (google it if you dont believe me)... and i didnt buy a D60 BECAUSE im not an amazing photographer, looking to get on the cover of NatGeo... and i knew i would get what i expected because canon was honest.. and i spent what i spent... because canon was honest... The garbage that HTC spews about their camera is nothing more than that.. its garbage... You CAN NOT refocus a shot with your M8.. you can add blur to it.. and it takes about 30 seconds to do so.. but i can do the same in photoshop in about half the time... and have been able to do so WITH ANY PHOTO EVER TAKEN... without 2 cameras...
As for megapixels.. you are right, to a degree.. megapixels are over rated.. you know what is under rated? adding a BETTER camera to a phone that is replacing its predecessor... they could have called it a 6MP CMOS.. and i would have felt better... but, to add exactly the same camera, with exactly the same screen size (after the soft nav) as my old phone? WTF!!! and, you know... if they hadnt used the same size HTC border at the bottom, but rather had given me edge to edge screen... fine.. but frankly, HOW DO YOU NOT FEEL RIPPED OFF? (seriously... put your M7 next to your M8... and start doing REAL comparisons... stop being biased because it's an HTC product...)
and im not saying the S5 is my direction... frankly, im leaning more severe.. thinking an i product... at least when they steal all of my money, i know im getting a remake of the last model because they added an S to it and charged $300 more for it...
FYI... I have since switched back to my M7... i really did love it as a phone... wasnt a fan of losing inductive charging... but, whatever.. the rest made up for it from the DNA... The M8 though... GARBAGE
(On a side note.. yes, the headphones.. F*ing AMAZEBALLS!!!... they actually do sound better on my M8 and M7 than my beats in ear buds do)...
I don't have much to dispute about what your saying about the camera. But if I was buying a phone for only a camera it wouldn't be an HTC or a Samsung. Overall I knew what I was getting into and I am pleased.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I've accepted the downsides to the M8, and if the purchase of it has taught me anything, it's made me aware of what I'm really looking for in a phone. I'm really really hoping Verizon picks up the Sony Z2, and that development is not locked down. Until the next big thing comes along, I'm ok with the M8.
Strange, isn't there supposed to be an onslaught of hate posts defending the M8 because you expressed a completely justified dissatisfaction? Aren't moderators supposed to be blathering on about how a "general" thread is apparently not place to discuss such things?

I love mine. I've had almost every single phone Verizon has offered in the past five or six years since I worked for them. M8 is definitely the best phone I've ever owned.
The color of the camera and dynamic range are spectacular. People wonder why the s5 has brighter pictures and its because of software post processing which degrades the quality of the image. The HTC One series is truly a photographer's phone. It takes beautiful raw images and then let's you, the user, post process the way you like.
As for the build vs the m7, the m8 is far better feeling and sturdier.
I understand what you are saying with your original post. But, there aren't going to be mind blowing new things every year. If that's what you want, then but a phone every second or third year. Don't post disappointments on here, bashing a perfectly good phone for the following year. HTC did great, you just don't know how or what to expect from mobile technology.
To add, sorry you had some lemons, but you're one of few. It happens. Move on. And the weight..it's 15 grams. Do you know how little a gram is?! Stop majoring on the minor my friend.

The M8 is an upgraded M7... Period! Just like the S5 is an upgraded S4 and so on. If you are looking for something to blow your mind, it is not yet available. This market is getting to a point where you will probably only see minor spec bumps with ANY manufacturer. I love the M8 cause of the build and overall snappiness of the device. It is much quicker than the M7 in all tasks due to the upgraded hardware. Just sold my T-Mobile S5 and I am very grateful I did cause TouchWiz is hideous! I realized why I ditched Samsung long ago. There really is no other competition as far as Verizon phones go IMO. This has and will have a huge development following and that is few and far between nowadays, especially with Verizon. You can always wait for the iPhone 6?? Lol

Hope you enjoy the s5. It will get root sometime in the next few months in sure but with that gawd awful safe strap and no CM. The s4 was made by playschool but holy sh*t the s5 takes it to a whole new level. It feels so cheap that it could pass for a fake toy if you put a sticker on the screen. Not too mention is probably slow and clunky with its awful touchwiz ui. Don't get me wrong, TW has potential, but they need to hire some real programmers to write their software because there is no excuse for the s4 or 5 to be as slow as they are when the m7 and m8 blaze through everything with the exact same hardware. Is the m8 a worthy upgrade from an m7? I think so. It's not a night and day difference but anyone that can read should have known that.

Nah, the M8 is the best smartphone experience available right now. Samsung's Touchwiz is marred by issues in its design and performance. Stock software is VERY important nowadays since getting root, let alone a stable AOSP ROM for said device, is much more difficult nowadays. Samsung has shown that they refuse to evolve in this way and will eventually fall behind. Even Apple managed to update their user interface.
I agree that HTC needs to step up their quality control. I understand they're trying to get back into the black but I too went through 2 devices prior to having this third acceptable one.
The Z2 comes close, but I find Sony's overlay to be behind as well. HTC really knocked it out of the park with Sense 6.

This is all personal preference. If you're so disappointed with your m8 you probably should've researched more before buying it. Possibly looking at reviews that literally all pointed out the capacitive button change and same camera quality as the m7.
Every device is going to have quirks about it that isn't perfect, so what? This phone is fantastic in every way, and nitpicking little details like the weight of the device or camera quality are things you should've researched before making a $600 purchase.
By the way, a little note on the camera, every single person who have seen some of the photos I've taken have been amazed at the quality. 70% are iPhone users. I just took a group photo yesterday with my phone, and my friend used her iPhone 5s. Everyone in the group liked my photo more, with both photos in the exact same conditions.
Give the camera a chance before you knock it, I've had nothing but great results.

Well hey guys. I've been getting alot of questions on whether people should go and get a nexus or keep the sensation since i was an extremely early adopter of the sensation and a huge HTC Fan. To be honest, i like the nexus, probably 10 more times than i liked the sensation, and here's why.
NO OVERHEATING. As many of you know, the sensation likes to get all hot and bothered. But, it gets a little too hot. its gotten hot on me to the point it burned the inside of my gel case i bought for it. The nexus has YET to even start to get a LITTLE warm, and trust me i charged it exactly how i did the sensation. Probably one of the main reasons i like the nexus.
BUILD QUALITY.Personally i love the way both of these devices are built. But in the end i have to give it to the Nexus. Reason being i like that the device literally feels PERFECT in the hand to me. the perfect mix between not too light but not ridiculous like the razr. I've had alot of experience with the lte nexus since i work for verizon and i like the gsm version more because its more thin and light.
GPS. Now i don't understand why people hate samsung for their crappy gps from what i read. This is the first smartphone i've ever owned that picked up my location at my house DIRECTLY THE FIRST TIME. Not two houses over or a block. My exact home address. Every other phone put me somewhere else, including the sensation.
BATTERY LIFE! I've never, ever, EVER, EVER had a phone thats lasted longer than this nexus has. im on 1 day,3h,24 min on battery with 34 percent left! NEVER have i had battery life this good. Most will say "hey shaq, your not using the phone thats why its lasting so long.derp derp derp" You want to know what i say to that? " NO boy, i've been using this phone constantly especially since its new and i've only had it for two days. Silly ass. "
Besides the screen which obviously goes to the nexus, this is why im keeping it. I don't know if many of you will even care about this, but this is for those who were wondering thats all. This isn't a biased review AT ALL seeing as i never liked samsung, don't like the sgs2 or any of their devices (yes even the Nexus S) and this is the first samsung device i've ever bought, and i'm extremely impressed. Hope this helps those on the gate about this phone.

Got 2 days and 5 hours with standard rom, mediocore usage. Always 3G.

Must say, the only reason I should use a Nexus is because of the Amoled. But since it ain't got sense.

Android 4.0 honestly destroys what sense ever was honestly if you gave it a try.
Samsung Actually makes cameras, their 5mp camera could easily be compared to a moto or htc camera and be on par or even beat it. It has one of the best camera sensors out on a phone. Megapixels don't determine how good the camera is . Trust me, i've done alot of tests against one another.
lol about the pyramid GPS, you're wrong, i tryed it at lobby of a big complex and it found my location in 30sec.
No microSD card slot.
No mass storage mode (so I can't use iTunes Agent)
No offline sync with PC for calendar and contacts (old fashioned I know, but I just don't want to sync with Google's sevrers).
No in-built DLNA app (Google really need to up their game with core functionality like this and implement full GUI mirroring to TVs/monitors via DLNA or wifi direct as standard so we can do more with our devices)
Other than that, I probably would've bought the Nexus too.
It would be nice if the Sensation didn't gently toast my backside when it's in my pocket ; )

@Shaq, thanks for sharing, you aren't the first person which said that he likes GN more than Sensation, but you are the first to explain why. While I disagree with heat issue (mine never got that hot) the rest of the point can be only understood by direct comparison (not possible in my case). Also, we don't know what HTC is going to come up with for the next Sense, but i have a feeling it's going to be rather yummy.
But all in all, possibility of me going to GED is higher and higher every day I use Android.
I would trade my sensation for a nexus in a heartbeat if it wasn't so. Damn big

I've got to agree with you on both points, I'm a avid htc fan but from the leaked ICS sense roms htc have seriously messed it up and I'm not talking about the obvious lags as it is a leak, and yes Megapixels count for nothing its all about the sensor

That would be me. I'm too strapped for cash right now to even consider getting a GN, but I did wonder how much better (or worse) it was compared to Sensation. So thanks for this.
Lack of SD card slot does kill me a little inside, but I'm sure the overall user experience makes you forget that. I had an iPhone previously, so I'm sure I could get over the lack of SD slot.

It's not that big. Remember it has no hard keys so it's only marginally bigger than the Sensation.

nope, not one bit. I'm not even going to get into CPU specs as they are all amazing at this point. I did wait to order my One X until I saw what Samsung was coming with, but one look at that phone and I immediately ordered my One X.
I for one love what HTC has done with sense on this phone and it kills touchwiz by far in my opinion. Also I think the looks of the One X far and away are more refined then the samsung.
I have been using an original iPhone (yes original edge speed) before getting my One X. I have never needed nor wanted to swap my battery or did I ever need a micro SD, so for me personally, I couldn't be happier.
my problem is i think i have OCD when it comes to gadget............
I waited till the GS3 launch before getting the One X. But I just don't see any way of not returning this and waiting to compare them in person. The phones are so different it will be easy to make the wrong decision if you're on the fence at all.
The One X is a fantastic phone and I'm grateful that we have to such great options to choose from, but there are a couple things that I don't care for that affect usability in a big way. I too am afraid the GS3 will release and I'll immediately regret it. Most, including myself, had a terrible reaction to the Samsung, but it's been growing on me.
One X:
-Build is just ridiculously good. Even more so since it's plastic and durable.
-Stunning screen. I doubt the GS3 will be as good.
-Sense 4.0 is just great. Touchwiz will certainly blow in comparison, but this is Android so that's less of an issue.
-Polycarbonte body. Texture feels great. Nothing shows on the white model.
-Screen seems to be fingerprint proof.
GS3:
-One X is not the easiest phone to use one handed because of the size. GS3 has rounded edges which look like it'll allow better reach. I'm just barely able to reach the corners on the One X, so this may bring it into the comfort zone.
-Generally the shape seems to sit in the hand very well from what I've seen and read.
-Power button on the side is so much better than the top in the One X.
-I am severely ocd about fingerprint/oil accumulation and the GS3 couldn't be worse in this regard. Hopefully there will be some decent replacement rear covers available.
Don't care about the microsd or removable battery (though hopefully the One X battery will be durable in the long term). It's the finer details that affect everyday usability that will win me over.

and the onex is sexier imo..
really comes down to preference...also after owning htcs and sammys i still prefer htc for that "quality" feel...

no regrets here (other than at&t's performance) the HTC One X is a very solid device. the S3 is a bit underwhelming honestly. they did some neat things and clever tricks, but in the end the One X is simply a work of art and the S3 feels more like a gimmick to me. at least from what i'm reading of course not having it in hand.

I waited until the S3 announcement. Once I saw unpacked I decided that the One X has taken the crown.
The one x is the most beautiful handset ever in my opinion. As far as looks go, one x hands down. BUT... The Galaxy S3 will outperform the one x even if they have similar specs. Samsung has always done a better job with drivers and optimizing things. If you want a great user experience, the Galaxy S3 is the clear winner to me. Lag free, smooth as butter, fast and lots of new features.

Battery life should be better since it'll be coming with a 21,000 battery as opposed to the 18,000 of the one X. Still on the wall about this phone. Kinda tired of touchwiz and samsung and want a new experience. HTC not having a memory card slot is killer for me. Might join sprint since the EVO ONE has way better specs.

Haha, I found it laughable that the 2 points that made the GS3 win were not related to the actual phone, but instead branding.
However, I can agree with the point. For general consumers, that is definitely a plus. Also, it was a competition on which should be THE Android flagship, and that makes the points even more prevalent.
Most Androids just don't have good presence or accessory support.
I can agree with the decision, but still think the One X is better as a general phone. Especially once ROMed up. When we get source, we'll be blazing!

Great video. I actually kind of agree with your conclusion...the S3 might be the better "flagship", but I'd prefer using the One X on a day to day basis.
When comparing these phones, for me it always comes down to this:
Software can be improved and optimized, hardware cannot. The multitasking issue is already largely mitigated in many custom ROMs, and that situation will only improve once we get kernel source. With the S3, you're always going to be stuck with a pentile AMOLED display and what is, in my opinion, a lower build quality.
Still, having to choose between these phones is definitely a #firstworldproblem, because they're both A+ devices. It is a great time to be a gadget nerd.

I got to play with a DoCoMo (S4) SGS3 for a couple of days about two weeks ago while I was in Japan and compared it to my international One X. Other than the browser which Samsung always does an incredible job with, the SGS3 wasn't perceivably "faster." At least not after I loaded the same 93 apps I regularly use on my phone. Both phones are incredibly fast, noticeably faster than the previous generation of phones. I think when you get down to measuring performance of transitions in milliseconds it becomes irrelevant.
TW vs. Sense is personal preference. TW has been basically the same since the SGS1. Outside of introducing "ploink" and "tink" sounds TW3 and TW4 are 90% the same. Sense is an environment, TW is an OEM launcher and when you're actually trying to get stuff done Sense's comprehensiveness allows you to be more productive. When comparing in-built apps (social, e-mail, music) and integration Sense is a clear winner. If you don't like overlays TW wins because it's less intrusive. I'm surprised more people haven't noticed but TW hasn't been resized for the HD display and presents 20% less information. For example, in settings, you'll see eight options displayed in TW and 10 in Sense. That carries through in everything in TW and Samsung's stock apps. Coming from a i9100 I'm tired of looking at the same blocky, dark, and dreary interface. Sense seems brighter, more polished, contemporary, and is w/o question the better integrated UI.
Some stuff was left out of the review. HTC using partitions so the phone can be connected as mass storage vs. Samsung’s MTP is a big deal for people that transfer a lot of stuff back and forth between their phone and PC. You also don't have to screw around with drivers if you're using someone else's PC. That combined with slower NAND speeds as seen in AnTuTu leaves it half as fast at moving files as the One X. Samsung’s BT implementation is as funky as it’s ever been. The SGS3 had problems connecting and/or reconnecting pretty consistently where my One X never had an issue on the half dozen devices I tried both phones with. Also, A2DP on the SGS3 makes it sound like you’re listening to XM; there’s little separation, crappy range, and music is generally flat whereas A2DP on the One X is the best I've experienced.
As for the other stuff like a non-removable battery, weak multi-tasking and non-expandable storage, it is what it is. If those are hot buttons than the decision's pretty easy on which way to go and all the other stuff becomes secondary.
In case it helps anybody comparing the two phones, here's why I kept the One X instead of getting a SGS3 as I originally had planned.

P.S. - My comparison is to the international One X. I haven't even seen an AT&T version and don't know if some of the things I'm highlighting may be different between the two versions.
I just went to the Sprint store to look at the GSIII and was not impressed. I was seriously considering adding a line to my AT&T account so I can get it, but I have no interest in doing that anymore. First off, the color choices are ridiculous. I hate white phones (aside from the HOX which is just smexy) and the the blue really just isn't for me. Where's the black, Sammy??? I think the color, plastic, and overall shape of the phone really just belie the actual power of the thing, and I don't like that one bit. I am a big fan of industrial design, and as far as Galaxy phones are considered I think the Epic 4G Touch was the most attractive of them all. The screen on the GSIII, while having brilliant colors, was instantly recognizable as pentile and that to me is a major, major deal breaker. Compared side by side with the HOX, well... there's just no comparison. The HOX's screen smokes the GSIII's. The UI was incredibly smooth, I will give them that, perhaps even smoother than my HOX running CleanROM (which is ridiculously smooth), but after using Sense 4.0 for a while, I am once again not a fan of Touchwiz (I loved it on my E4GT). I think it too belies the power of the device because of how colorful and toyish it is. The whole thing just screams toyish and is really hard to take seriously as the powerhouse that it actually is. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone, but I just can't see myself using it. I'm glad I got my HOX and am not jealous of the GSIII in the slightest.
The only thing that is even remotely making me THINK of switching is Developers FLOCK to the Galaxy S phones. They've all been rooted, bootloader lock isn't a problem, and they have source.
I love Android, but not for the stock experience. I like to play, and the SGS III has more to play with, or it least I feel like it will in short order.
Were it not for Scrossler's awesome ROM I'd be rocking a Gnex right now.
I hope to stick with the HOX for a while but if a deal comes up on Craig's list I'll have to seriously consider it.

Sorry if this is repeated and I'm sure there are several threads like this in other phone forums but I didn't see one specifically relating to this phone. To be honest I'm completely fed up with my HTC One X, and have been for awhile regardless of my customizations and help from some great people on here (hope everyone keeps up their great work!). So when I noticed the Nexus 5 went on sale I jumped on it and got the 32gb version. I can't upgrade my phone through AT&T for another year so it sounded like a good idea to me at the time. I haven't gotten my phone yet, won't leave the warehouse till the 8th it says. I'm curious what others think of this decision and how much of an upgrade this will truly be? I'm feeling a little bit of buyers remorse even though I don't have the phone yet, and I'm really not sure why. I feel like maybe I should have waited the year to upgrade or maybe like I hyped myself up for something that seemed like a good deal to replace something that technically worked still but frustrated me. First world problems I know, again just curious to see how others see the situation.

Personally I think you made a good decision, the Nexus 5 looks like a great device. If I had the spare money at the moment I'd definitely buy one. To compare the two phones might be a bit unfair as the Nexus is hands down a better phone spec-wise. In saying that, the One XL is still a good phone, but it's dated now.

I too have ordered the N5. The HOXL was my first android phone and solidified my permanent departure from apple. I'm due for an upgrade from ATT at the end of this month. I plan to "upgrade" to an iPhone 5s and promptly sell it on ebay to recoup some of the N5 investment.
It seems most of the original xl devs jumped ship a while back. I guess next paycheck I might even look into it. Kinda sucks, even Rohan cleaned out his goo.im.

Haha, yep that's my luck too man. I usually keep a fat stack buried somewhere for occasions such as buying a new phone, that way I can actually keep up with these things. I guess it might be time to start digging since we only have 1-2 devs that aren't blind building.
Its an good upgrade for sure...But dunno why I still love my xl ... The build n the camera n grt support makes me utilize it till its hardware ends...

N5 is a flagship type device, that is a year and a half newer than the One X. LG would have to fail pretty hard for it not to be a significant upgrade.
The specs look great, and it looks to be a very solid phone. Although its aesthetic design is a bit plain to me, to the point of being mediocre or even ugly (purely subjective, or course). And some reviews have commented that the camera is a bit disappointing. But otherwise a very solid device for a great (almost unbeatable) price.
Aye pretty sure I'll be getting one. HTC have had their day by giving this phone eol too early.

Yep, I ordered a 32GB Nexus 5 on Sunday. Google says that it will ship in 2-3 weeks. Time to sell the One X.
I thought about it, had the Nexus 5 in the cart, but decided to just hold on to that ~$450 (32gb + tax) for now. The hox is good enough as a phone even with its flaws (multitasking, storage, RAM). I really needed a new tablet, so I bought a 32gb Nexus 7 which has been an awesome supplement to the hox for me.
Anyone thought about waiting till the m8 comes out to see how it stacks up against the nexus 5? I mean honestly comparing the nexus 5 to the HTC one xl is comparing apples with oranges, the one xl is so old. Even comparing the nexus 5 with the one seems a little unfair as the nexus 5 is like the start of the 2014 line of flagship phones.

So I got my phone way earlier than expected, and I have to say it's like night and day. I'm incredibly happy with the phone. No regrets at all! I should think it will last quite awhile as well, that's for sure.
Got my N5 on Tuesday. It's incredibly fast and despite the One XL's still-awesome screen, text is noticeably crisper on the N5. It also feels much more premium than pictures would let on.
The one thing I noticed is that despite the smaller screen, the One XL actually has more usable space due to the N5 having soft buttons eating up space. Certainly it's nothing that will make me return the N5, just something I thought I'd point out for those considering the switch. Otherwise the N5 is a beast and Kit Kat is pretty cool.

I have had an HTC One XL for about a year, then an HTC One for a few months, which I sold and replaced with a Nexus 5. So I have the One XL and the N5 at the moment. There's two things I value most in a smartphone: the screen and the camera.
In my opinion the N5 screen is not as good as the HTC screen: colors seem a little duller and the diagonal viewing angles are downright poor in comparison. Still, it's not a bad screen.
About the camera, well, the N5 takes more detailed shots, that's for sure. I've done a bunch of direct comparisons and the N5 comes out on top when it comes to fine detail. However, and this is a big issue for me, the N5 camera is severely limited by the Android stock camera. You can forget about adjusting parameters, burst mode, disabling autofocus and other useful features the HTC camera provides. With the HTC camera, even though it is not as good as the N5 camera on a technical level, I feel more confident I'll get a good picture, although it depends on what you will be shooting. I take alot of pictures of my dog when we go for long walks, and the N5 camera is slow to capture movement so pictures tend to come out blurry. The HTC camera is not that fast either, but faster still and more suited for this scenario. Oh, and you can forget about taking good pictures during video recording on the N5, all you get is a small 1080p screenshot.
Speed wise, yes, the N5 is a joy to use. It really makes for a fun Android user experience, and loading times are definitely shorter on the N5 (loading web pages for instance).
I like the way the N5 feels in the hand too, much more so than the HTC One XL, despite being a larger phone.
Now here's the thing though, I'm regretting getting rid of my HTC One. To me it has the best of both of these other phones: a beautiful 1080p screen, good specs, and a very solid camera. Yes, I know the low resolution does not have many fans and admittedly when it comes to detail it suffers because of that, but its camera is a joy to use. Snapping pictures is blazingly fast and I hardly ever get blurry motion in my shots, which is perfect for my needs. So in the end, I will return my N5 and probably get a used HTC One to replace it. Or maybe I will wait a few weeks and see if Google does anything about the camera situation on the N5. For now though, my HTC One XL will keep me happy.

I agree the screen isn't as nice, though the 1080p does make text crisper to my eye. And yeah, the camera is frustrating to use compared to the One XL's.

I also find the One XL nicer in the hand and it's easier for me to pick up off a flat surface, both due to its beautiful curves.
I've been testing the N5 on T-Mobile for the last week and am going to port my number over today from AT&T. I'll miss my One XL but can't justify paying AT&T $110/month vs. $70/month for T-Mobile anymore. T-Mobile's LTE coverage is good enough in L.A. for me to jump ship.
So far, I am loving the phone, and I have no faults with it as of yet. Yes, when you zoom in on pictures, they can be a bit blurry blown up on the computer, but I could care less since I'm not a professional photographer. Feels great in my hand, and people keep saying my phone looks sickkkk.
Oh, and this thing is LOOUUDDD. Louder than any other phone I've come across. The only lag I saw was while installing all my apps.

I've never owned an HTC phone before, and the UI for me is a little tough to get used to - especially when my other devices are more 'stock' Android, - a Nexus 7 and Moto X. I've had plenty of skinned devices before, Samsung and Moto pre-Google, so I know there's a learning curve. The hardware though, it's about as close as I'll ever get to an iPhone, and it's fantastic. The build quality, the buttons, the material, top notch. Coming from "flagship" Sammy phones (Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 and 3's) - can't hold a candle to this. Biggest con (aside from the Sense UI) is the camera. I know I might need to tweak some settings, but it should be (in theory) a much better image quality just on auto settings.
I'd say, all things considered, the hardware is the biggest perk, but I have a feeling I'll still be using my Moto X more than 50% of the time.
Now, if we can get CM in the future, that's another story altogether, but I think it's too early to tell if someone will be able to root and unlock. Haven't kept up on the root/ROM scene since I loaded Beans on my Note 3 running 4.3 back in January.
The best phone I ever had, hands down. Second in line was the original M7 HTC One. Before that, my thrid favorite was my SGN. I havve had multiple phones in between and none come close to the M8...
I will say I HATE Blinkfeed but just download your favorite launcher (I use Apex)

The best phone I ever had, hands down. Second in line was the original M7 HTC One. Before that, my thrid favorite was my SGN. I havve had multiple phones in between and none come close to the M8...
I will say I HATE Blinkfeed but just download your favorite launcher (I use Apex)

You can use the "manage home screen pages" setting to remove blinkfeed. No need to go for an outside launcher because of Blinkfeed.

I figured that was the case.
I thought it would be best to mention that since you made it sound like it was the only way to get away from Blinkfeed.
I had a DNA, then the HTC one, then I had a Galaxy S4. This M8 is the best. That bezel at the bottom is confusing...i keep wanting to the old home button. HTC phones are the experience I prefer. I don't really care about root. I used to..but i realized I have no time to install cute themes...and i only used 2 root apps. I would like root only for free tethering. Im still on an unlimited plan.
I would say this phone is amazing and I have yet to properly play with it.
The HTC transfer tool worked pretty good...even transfered my settings and put my home screen the way I like it.
The focus thing is kinda gimmickey but the camera is awesome. Can't wait to make some porn with this bad boy. Lmao

Loving mine, coming from the DNA. Don't much care for the on screen buttons but other than that. I like it. To me the camera is not as bad as a lot of sites are saying. Here's a quick pic I just took. The fire looks so clean.

best phone in stock form to date! haven't had one hiccup, lag, glitch nothing! just flawless buttery performance! cant wait until we get root and get rid of bloat and some custom roms. phone will be a beast!!!
I am a G2 user on ATT but went to the Verizon store because I was dying to see this beautiful masterpiece, overall it is a very exquisite design and feels very nice.
I have never owned a HTC product and would like to in the future, but Damn this sense UI is very appealing to the eyes and simple.
Very fast phone with zero lag.
I spent a lot of time with the camera and I must say it isn't TERRIBLE but it isn't better than anything we have out now.
Where the One will accelerate is in low light and that is already proven....
Overall I'd say HTC WILL SELL TONS.

agreed. the key is zero lag. phone is stupid fast and everything is instant. this phone is going to be a huge success!!
So far so good. Sense is as bad as ever but it's easy enough to get rid of the bulk of it by installing another launcher. I also loaded the stock email app, clock and a few other things as I prefer the stock versions and disabled most of the bloatware.
The notification bar is more cluttered than it really needs to be. About half the bar tends to be taken up by system state icons leaving very little room for actual notifications. Also the second camera is pretty gimmicky. I'm not sure it's a device I'd buy solely based on the camera.
Overall though, I've never had a piece of hardware that felt so good in the hands. I've run a G1, a Nexus One, a MyTouch 4g, a Thunderbolt, a S3, a Droid Razr along with a few other phones as daily drivers and none of them even come close to this one in terms of hardware. It's just a shame that sense is on it.
This is my first HTC phone and so far its all good. I love the feel of it, its so solid with the uni body design. Im definitely looking forward to custom roms ect. in the future. Tootles Galaxy S4...you've been a b!tch

sense bad? I don't know how you can say that. blows every other ui out of the water with what they have done with it. sense 6.0 is instant, lag/hiccup free, butter smooth what more do you want? go back to a nexus if you think sense is bad!!!
If there was a pure android phone with this sort of build quality available on Verizon I'd probably seriously consider it. I'll try to refrain from having opinions though since some people are touchy about those.

There's a lot to be said for the hardware and touchwiz isn't really any better. I'm not sure why it ruffles your feathers so much that someone might find the hardware compelling enough to overcome a UI that they aren't crazy about.

Same 5" screen, same feel in my hands...
But now I don't have to cup my hand behind the speaker to hear what's playing. Boom sound is simply awesome for such a little guy.
While I would like to have seen the camera resolution be in the 5-8mp range, I can't deny that this phone can take a pic in very low light. So that is a true plus for me.
But best of all is the SDXC slot is back. Thank you HTC.

Sense doesnt seem to be anything special to me. Touchwiz is a resource hogging load of crap imo. I got the phone for the design, hardware and potential to have it unlocked in the future.
