[PSA] For people who constantly swap batteries - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

If you're like me and swap batteries constantly, always wait for your V20 to shutdown completely. I've had my phone bork out twice now because I didn't wait for the phone to shutdown. It essentially wiped both the recovery and my system and my phone was stuck in Firmware Update mode.

I swap between 3 batteries with my US996 for about a year now. Never had an issue, but I always wait till the backlight goes out after shutdown.
Thanks for the heads up. Now that my wife also has a US996 with spare batteries, we'll see if she can be patient enough to let it shutdown before the swap, lol.

Something is wrong with your phone.
The recovery partition is read only, and on top of that, isn't even accessed when the phone is booted normally.
The system partition is also read only.
Android was designed to do minimal damage in the event of sudden power loss. The worst that should happen is maybe a file gets corrupt on the userdata partition.
Bottom line, if partitions are being wiped or corrupted .. you have a hardware problem.

I don't swap batteries too often but i have a spare battery. It just sits on the table. I've noticed recently that it was slightly bloated and wondered why.
How does a battery just sitting there for months become bloated on its own ?
The V20's battery is pretty thin so a little bulge is noticeable. The plastic case it came in still closes so i suppose i will use that as a gauge to how long i can use it.
I'm disappointed and maybe have to get another spare battery

Not really sure if it is or how it happens but I promise it only happens if I don't wait for it to turn off completely. If it helps, I'm using an H990DS rooted and running the flashable oreo.

Yeah it's better to be careful about it. It might just be particular with my phone or my version of V20 (H990DS).

I'm on the H918 and I do a 50/50 mix of just pulling the battery out while it's still on instead of shutting down and shutting it down somwtimes and I've never lost anything or ever had that happen to my phone, even on my older galaxys and notes that I still have. Something on your phone definitely seems messed up.
Speaking of battery bulges. My tech orbit battery just started bulging enough to pop the back piece off but I had it in a case so didn't notice till I took the case off one day. Oddly enough the fingerprint sensor stopped working completely and there were a few other oddities as well that were resolved and/or started working again after I got a new battery. Very weird.

Did you fully charge that battery. Lithium ion batteries aren't supposed to be stored with full capacity

Possibly, i didn't realise that fully charging could result in bloating

Any bulge at all is a bad battery. Don't use it. It will only get worse.

This. You run the risk of it exploding if you do.
As a general rule, Li-Ion batteries shouldn't be stored at max capacity, in a cold environment or for months on end uncharged.
Any of these things (especially max capacity in a warm environment) kills the battery quite fast.
As a sidenote to OP, you should probably also do a full charge/discharge cycle after swapping a battery in while the phone is on, i.e charge it from as close to 0% as possible with the phone powered up.
Actual vs advertised battery capacity is different in every one, it's like silicon lottery with processors, GPUs, SSDs, etc. Every battery has a slightly different one, and if you swap a 3200mah one out for another 3200mah one that has an ACTUAL capacity that is lower (maybe because it's a lower-grade knock-off battery) Android will shut down prematurely, because it thinks there's still power left in the battery when there actually isn't.
This is more-so an issue when going from an extended battery to a regular one, but you get the idea.
You can use AccuBattery to check the real capacity of your battery after a full discharge/charge cycle.

[Q] Battery Life and 4200mAh Replaceable Battery

Hey guys, I just wanted to check if my battery life is abnormal or not. During normal usage, it's a bit hard for me to compare because I'm tending to use this phone a lot more than my previous one (Xperia Z1 Compact) but overnight, it would tend to lose at least 7-8%. Last night, I decided to try disabling auto-sync, put it on Power Saving and see what would happen (as well as closed all my apps through the regular task manager) and it dropped a whopping from 45% to 31%! Don't know how that happened.
When I go into the Power menu, I can see that Android System used 13%, Android OS and Screen used 10% each, Google Play Services used 9% and a few other apps and services used 4% or less. I got my Note Edge in Australia and is currently using it in the U.K but it's an international variant (SM-N915G) and is compatible with my current carrier (O2). I'm running stock 5.0.1 rooted. Do you guys think it's normal?
Another question regarding the battery: I have never owned a smartphone before that allowed me to switch batteries so I was wondering, would something like this or this be trustworthy? They seem really cheap and the capacity is 4200mAh whereas the stock battery is only 3000mAh. From your experience buying replaceable batteries, is it safe to use something like this (not to mention, they says they're compatible with the N9150 but didn't mention the N915G)? Thanks a lot in advance!
A lot of folks have had similar issues with lollipop. Backup all your data and do and full reset. Seems to sort out the battery drain issues
Good luck

Thanks a lot. Just a quick noobie question, should I just backup with Titanium and then do a reset from inside the OS or should I do it through CWM (I already have a recent enough nand backup). Cheers!
I have had horrid battery life since lollipop upgrade. I want to go back to kit kat so bad. Primarily because of the battery and because notifications appear as overlays in some apps now instead of on the edge. The phone also is less responsive. I kick myself every day for upgrading.
Side note, are the batteries listed above supposed to actually fit inside the phone with no physical distortion?

I haven't had any major issues since upgrading to Lollipop, I was just hoping to squeeze a bit more out of the battery life. As for responsiveness, I'd say it's about the same, if not slightly better. You sound like you might also do with a factory reset. I just want to know if the factory reset option in the settings would do the job or if I should do it from the recovery.
As for the above batteries, I would imagine that they should fit perfectly since they were designed for the Note Edge but since I have had no experience with replaceable batteries, I would like to hear some confirmation.
I have mine on power saving mode and screen brightness on 43%. I get two full days usage so I only charge it once every two days.

I had a battery from the same manufacturer as your first link for a s2, it was apparently bigger in capacity, but drained faster than the stock battery and swelled after two weeks to the point that the rear cover wouldnt close fully.

Yeah, that was my concern. The only time I had a higher capacity battery fit snugly into a phone and work as intended was when I had my htc sensation. Anker made a higher mA battery that really worked. Everything now seems to be a sham. I will avoid it.
You can't fit more capacity of battery in the same size more than it's done by Samsung, otherwise they would do it. These are just fake numbers, I'm sure they're even less than the 3,000 made by Samsung.
As for the resetting your phone, settings option pretty much does the job.

Extended Battery Photon Q

Hey guys,
I was looking into extended batteries for the Photon Q and noticed that the Droid 4 uses the same battery as our phone. Is it possible to use one of their aftermarket batteries?
I want a slim battery (not interested in making the phone bigger) and this one shows the best results from the D4 forums
Our original battery has some green tag on it as seen here:
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/ECQAAMXQUmFSjm2l/$_35.JPG
Is that just for NFC or something else? I don't mind losing NFC if that means I get more battery life
I got the mugen power battery to fit by removing some plastic and the back of the case, and of course NFC. Problem is it would get hot and slow down too often. Maybe that phone, maybe the battery, not sure, never tried it in another xt897.
I went ahead and ordered this gold slim battery
I'll be happy if it's even 10-15% better than a fresh stock battery
I will report back with my findings. In my current usage with one of the latest nightlies, I barely get 1-1.5 hours of screen on time when on mobile data and about 2 hours of screen on time when on wifi
While I've had decent luck with the gold batteries, they are actually just a factory Motorola battery with a shiny gold wrapper put on them. With that said though, at least from the ones I got they seem in every way to be genuine Motorola batteries, so still a good deal. I ended up getting a Mugen too and am working on making a case. I've got one molded up with some bondo but think I might end up trying to make one with super glue and baking soda like another poster did to make it more durable. I can still fit it in the vehicle dock by filing the USB port holder on the dock down a little bit.
If anyone uses the Mugen and happens to use Tasker, I wrote a tasker script to attempt to get an accurate battery percentage from the voltage readings and then update the OS if anyone wants. I also wrote one to keep the keyboard backlight more like the factory ROM instead of following the display backlight like it does in CM.
Just an update. Installed the battery today. I did partially peel off the gold sticker and it was all silver underneath. I know in other threads, the gold battery was reported to be a fake battery, or even stock battery with a new wrapper.
Initial results are good, but it's too early to tell. I will report back with updated usage. So far I'm not even sure battery stats are being reported correctly but it's a drastic increase in battery life.
So the gold battery has mixed results. The first few days I used it, the battery seemed pretty good. About 1.5 times longer than my shot original battery. However I noticed this battery does weird things in reporting numbers. Many times it will report 20% and then drop drastically fast to 0%.
Overall it's a decent battery but certainly not the capacity on the label. I would think a fresh stock battery would perform similarly without the weird drop off.
The biggest difference between my the gold and old stock battery is that it tends to sip power better. When the phone is not in use, the battery won't drain as fast. However when in use the battery drains just as fast. Maybe a little slower with gold, but not a huge difference.
My only concern is sourcing good batteries for this phone now. Even if I found a new stock battery, the unit itself has to be at least 3 years old. I'm sure motorola doesn't make new batteries for this phone anymore...
Wish we could frakenstein a battery for this phone

I could do that. With that LG battery or a different one that fits better? I don't love that it is thicker by up to 1mm.
I also saw some other eb41 batteries on the market (read my thread here for the 4 I've found ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/accessories/best-battery-t3341507). Not sure how good they are, only had the same mixed experience with the gold.

Lenmar still makes batteries for this phone (EB41, fits Droid 4 and Photon Q). I ordered 3 about 6 months ago and there was a 2 month lead time, so they obviously were newly manufactured batteries. I keep a spare in the fridge, the ones in my Droid 4 and Photon Q perform like new as expected.
Note: it won't come with the NFC antenna, but with great care this can be removed from the old battery and reattached.
I would like an extended battery too, but only if it came with a nicely fitting cover. Mugen makes one for the Droid 4 which could be used with the Photon Q, but they don't make a corresponding cover for the Photon Q.
Hope this helps.
P.S. which ROM do you guys use on this phone? I'm running CM 12.1 and it is fine, but when I have a few apps running like Google Music and Navigation, the phone gets super slow due to lack of memory. Under 'Apps -> Running' it shows 450 MB used just for System! I guess 1 GB phones are just passe at this point--or is there a better way to get more life out of this phone?
Cheers,
Mario

Couldn't find replacement battery and back cover

It seem like there is no way to buy a replacement battery for nexus 9 or the back cover. Is there any source for the purchasing?

At both sites the replacement battery is out of stock. My battery has started acting very strange (tablet totally turns off around 20%, then when i plug it in battery is 100% dead, needs 15 minutes charging just to start up again).
I did quite a bit of googling but didn't find anything.

If anybody is still searching (or has given up already): I just got a new battery from here: http://bigupgadgets.com/battery-35h00218-00m-b0p82100-for-htc-flounder.html. You may find it from other vendors if you search for "35H00218-00M".
The printing on the back looks different from my old battery - looks like this is indeed a new part, rather than a refurbished/replacement HTC battery. It fit perfectly, and charged fine. I just installed it yesterday, so I can't yet say how well it performs long term.

So how did it turn out? My Nexus 9 is going to become sort of a lab rat for full-scale linux development on the device so I'm considering replacing the dying battery as well. I could get the aforementioned battery for around 30€. If the battery works without blowing up and is the advertised capacity, that is.

It worked well, fewer slowdowns and crashes. That may be in part also because I fixed the location of the copper plate/heat sink that had been placed under the original battery (leading the heat into the device) to where it was supposed to be. Some problems that may be more related to the chip/RAM/64bit choice persisted (browser is still super slow with just a few tabs open). Not using it much these days except for ebooks, Hoopla, etc. When I don't use it for a while, I turn of the Wifi and the charge holds for many days. Good luck with your Linux endeavors.

Well all the other malfunctions are definitely NOT related to the battery, except if the old one maybe started to lack in persistent current delivery (which would cause the sudden shutoff - my Nextbit Robin had it as well and it would behave as if the battery wasn't designed to power the chipset, crashing at 70% charge). If something in the power delivery goes wonky then maybe that also messed up some memory addresses and CPU calculations.
But enough being a smartass - if the battery does hold up without life-threatening malfunctions then it might be a good option?

What I was trying to share is that the new battery (and its proper placement) fixed a couple of things for me that I hadn't expected to be related to the battery. So I got actually way more than just increased battery life. With some non-original batteries (e.g. for cameras) you see that the copies are definitely inferior to the original. This one was as good or better.
Of course that was two years ago - production standards may have changed, or you may get a battery that's been sitting around for the last two years (what would that do to a battery? - I have no idea). Mine's still working well after this time. I would definitely go for it, but I'd try to find a vendor where I can send it back if for some reason it's not working as advertised. I haven't heard of any of these batteries exploding, and really would not worry about it. Hope that helps.

The G5 isn't THAT old, geez.
Anyway, my V20 was doing this, and it was just a ****ed up battery, misreporting it's percentages.
You can also try to do the battery stats cleaners if you are rooted, but I don't know if those even work anymore.
What I would recommend, is let the battery die, then charge it with a 900mah charger.(Something from an older phone) and let it sit without touching it.
Sometimes letting it charge with the slower chargers helps get it back to life

The battery being kaput isn't exactly true I don't think. I have 3 different batteries and without fail at 15% it will tell me the battery is dead and it will then proceed to shut down. No bettery saver, just a black screen. Phone has been doing this since I got it. Stock rom or custom doesn't matter. Not sure if this is the right place to post, I have a H850.

I'll second this. My main battery did start to swell a little besides the sudden shutdown at 15%. I also know that this swelling can eventually cause the fingerprint sensor to malfunction. Beware. Anyhow, I decided to use the "almost dead" battery to game for long hours while charging (PUBG). My healthy new battery was used for normal usage besides gaming. Hope this helps!

Check Your Battery, Mine was Getting Ready to Blow

H918 with 10j OverDrive rom Werewolf 2.0 no rctd.
My battery started draining a bit faster than normal. I hadn't added any new apps or made any changes to the system.
I'm not a heavy user, no gaming, occasionally stream netflix. Recently I have streamed netflix onto the tv with a cable. The cable is supposed to charge the phone, but it doesn't, so after a couple hours the phone is down to about 50%
So I went to pull the battery thinking the system needed a recalibration.
The battery was bulging (gases building up). Not good. I don't know if this was an isolated issue or as these phones get older, there is a flaw in some of the batteries.
The battery was the original. The phones manufacture date is 10/2016.
As a side note, the phone stores don't carry batteries. Batteries Plus has to order it $39.99. I ordered a couple OEM LG batteries off ebay for about $12 apiece. Now I get to go a week or so without a phone. It might be a good idea to get a spare and check your battery periodically. Better safe than sorry.
Cheers!

All battery's will eventually fail, it's inherant in the current design iteration of lithium ion battery's, how long and how bad can vary, but a lithium battery that has consistent charge/discharge cycles daily will last around 8-16 months on average, doesn't matter what brand or size, it's just how there currently desgined, wait a few years till we have lithium-glass or lithium-plastic battery's then this will be a thing of the past...

Most every phone I have had I owned for 2 years. This is the first one to have a problem. Thank goodness it is removable.
Also, my dad (85 yrs old) had a Moto g4 he wasn't using. He switched to android because I did, but screwed the phone up with really crappy apps. I told him I would set it up for him, but he didn't listen. So he went back to ios. I had to do a factory reset of the phone to get rid of all the crap. Got it set up right and it's not that bad a phone (might even root it). Removable back and battery, SD card. but no IR Blaster. It was unlocked so my tmo sim worked right away. At least I have a phone for the next week while I wait for the new batteries to show up.
I'll be keeping a close eye on the new batteries. I hope no one else has this problem. Very dangerous. The case I had it in concealed the problem. When I took the case off, the back plate fell right off. It had already been pushed of by the expanding battery, but the case kept it from being noticeable.
Cheers!
I have 3 LG V20s and I have bought extra batteries for all of them but have never encountered your issue. Could it be that your custom ROM may have something to do with it?

I don't think so. I've been using the same rom and kernel for about a year. Hopefully it was just an isolated case.
Strange that you should post this. I too have just run into this. I normally get about 1 1/2~2 yrs out of a battery on my smartphone, however on my LG V20 that I got in Nov '17 it just started doing the exact same thing. I'm fairly experienced so I was trying to isolate if anything untoward was going on software wise. After nothing really was attributable to the loss I decided to examine the battery and bingo just like you the battery is quite swollen. I'm hoping that the new "supposed oem" battery that I ordered last week (should show up by end of the week) lasts longer than the oem battery that shipped with the phone.

I am also having bloating batteries. One is the original oem and the other is aftermarket Hyperion. Both are about a year old. I wonder if quick charge might play a factor as I use it all the time.
