Pixel 3 Root - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

I'm interested in exploring battery improvement and wanted to root my device. I'm coming from the Pixel XL and previous to that I've had lots of experience rooting, roming and swapping out kernels. All without any bricks. My question is I know how interwoven SafetyNet has become, and if I just went ahead and rooted the device that would immediately break GPay and Snapchat, right?

I don't use Snapchat, but Magisk passes SafetyNet and hides GPay. I use it every day at my office for breakfast/lunch and have no issues.

Hides? So does that mean you can use NFC payments?

Magisk Hide keeps root from being detected,, so the app passes SafetyNet otherwise it wouldn't work at all. Of course it scans at the terminal when it passes SafetyNet.

Would there be a point in rooting this?

I've been rooting phones since the days of the htc hero. Recently, I've noticed with Marshmallow and Nougat even more so, there is less reason to root other than small issues such as uninstalling unwanted system apps and installing apps such as titanium backup. However with rooting comes the issue of making it difficult to update the software when an official update comes through, other than going through a hurdle.
Do you guys think that now with Nougat, does the cons of rooting outweigh the pros of rooting?
I would like to root if only to theme the device (not a fan of Huawei's theme engine)
To be honest I don't think that's necessary

The biggest plus of root is the adblocker....
I only use root for titanium backup and for a adblocker. So yeah, that would be a reason for me. Also removing bloatware is nice.

Root all my device's: Adaway, Titanium, Kernel Auditor, Roms, Mods, Solid Explorer, Build Prop, etc....
And don't forget VIPER4Android.
I'm not sure to be able to live without on my new Mate 9.
Every device should be pre-rooted by default. Especially expensive devices like mate 9.

not sure if it will let me just google adguard

I have rooted most of my devices but I will keep this one stock for a while. I just do need to root but I get that some people do.
I used to root all my phones up until about a year ago. I miss Titanium Backup but these days many apps use cloud backup for settings and Google makes a good job of restoring apps quickly in the background.
The only other main reason I rooted was ad blocking. But then I discovered Adguard. I paid for a lifetime subscription (really cheap actually) and it works pretty much flawlessly.
With Nougat (and Marshmallow) the system and functions are so much more efficient and features are now built in that used to require root. And now it's just too much hassle, along with a risk of bricking, voiding warranty, not getting updates and causing problems with some apps (like banking or VOD) So rooting for little gain is something I just don't bother with now.

I agree with you. I haven't rooted my phone for the first time, and amazingly haven't felt the need to do so. The Mate 9 is a great phone.
All the problems I'm reading about on this site come from people who have rooted their phones, (a potential Pandora's box) and it's not a great advert for Huawei.

My internet banking apps and my subscription satellite streaming app will detect root and will not work as I found when I rooted my Mate 7 (so I got the Mate 9 and not rooting it)

You can't use a rooted phone on ANY banking App. Nor any App that guarantees secure transactions.
Infact, of you do not use fingerprint (or any other secure mode on the Mate 9 i.e. Password etc), it will refuse to permit secure app transactions and send you to the desktop sites on your browser.

My previous phone, a Galaxy Note 3, is rooted and I run all my banking apps on it. And it doesn't have a fingerprint sensor or anything but a pattern password and I've had no issues.
Would like to root my Mate 9 just to get TiBU working but it's not looking too promising, based on the many problem reports.

Root - Yes or No?

I kind of want to root my 7 Pro, since I really miss Substratum.
I also don't care about Widevine, but are there any more disadvantages with rooting the 7 Pro?
Only ones I can think of is you can't use the Netflix app and you need to login to Snapchat before you root
You can use Netflix by hiding it in Magisk but videos will play only in 480p.

I have had it hidden in Magisk and it makes me update whenever I open it then google play said this app isn't compatible with your device anymore. I don't really care that much about Netflix and don't really care at all if it's not in HDR but I'm curious how you got it working.

Netflix works perfectly for me and never had an issue and I've rooted every phone I've had since owning a smartphone back in 2010. If you open the play store and go to settings, scroll down to the bottom and see if your device is certified or uncertified. If uncertified you need to hide root for all Google apps. I do Google pay, play, services the Google app I have it all and reboot and your device should show as certified.
As far as the op and root... I wouldn't own a phone if could not root. It's my phone, I want to do with it what I want to. If not that's what iPhones are for. Locked down junk that owners are told what they can do it not do with the phones they own.
I do not root.
I plan on rooting purely for tether hiding as my phone is my internet on the road. Does anybody know what happens with updates on rooted op7p?
why isn't this a poll?
I rooted. For Google sans. Kernels can give even better battery life. also renovate gives some handy options like, centre clock, nav bar height. High brightness mod.
Not forgetting substratum if you fancy some more theming

You won't get small OTA updates, you would need to install the full zip.
On the other hand you get full control of your device

Since it's so easy to root it is worth it for what u are wanting, if want to unroot it is easy too using patched boot and stock boot images. You don't even need twrp.
It is also so easy to update with root too.

It's not because you can flash a phone that it's what they created expected for it. Why bother developping their OS and launcher if they made for people to remove both as soon as they get it ? They should just sell naked hardware with a tutorial to flash a rom.
I normally waited until phone stopped getting official support to root and try out custom rom. That could be one to three years depending on the phone.

Actually they do encourage people to root and develop for it. OnePlus takes things that the development community adds to their OOS base and incorporates stable thing they feel enhances their OS. It's also the reason they are one of the very few phones that unlocking and rooting does not count your warranty.
OOS is the first and only OEM skin/OS that I have never replaced with a custom ROM. My last custom ROM was Pure Nexus with the Nexus 6P. The OnePlus 5, 6 and now the 7pro all were tied with stock ROM, rooted, TWRP and custom kennel (ex kerenel)
OnePlus is the inherit unofficial successor to the Nexus line on XDA! Unlock the boot and root... Cheers
I would root my phone If I had some tutorial how to use Netflix in HD. OnePlus 7 pro's best feature is a screen. I bought it to use Netflix and do not want to spoil the pleasure of using it in 480p.
Another root reason for me would be to change font color globally from white to black. I dream of phone theme where all is red and font is black
Still not sure should I do it or not....

How do you do that? Can you pm me or something? Thanks.

Do you find you need root?

I used to be a crack flasher all the way back to the original SGN. It slowed down when I got the 5T. Only rooted the 6 but never did root the 6T but I did unlock the bootloader.
With the 7 Pro I feel no need to unlock the bootloader or even think about root. Is this just due to Android getting better or something else?
I was on the fence but ended up rooting mainly for the VPN-less adblocking.
Yes
For,
Titanium Backup
AdAway
Tasker & Tasker Plugins
YouTube Vanced
Custom text, alarm and ringtones (removing stock and replacing with custom in /system/media/audio/)
Custom boot animations
Custom fonts
iOS emojis
Renovate Magisk ROM
Substratum for themeing
Dolby Digital Plus
SysConfig Patcher
The way I look at it now is you can not do certain things without root. Thats reason enough.
There is really nothing you cannot do with root (that you can do unrooted)

Google Pay isn't what breaks it's Google play services that will block your card use. I update google pay the second it says there's an update and I never once had an issue with root and google or Samsung pay for that matter (Gear S3 Frontier)

Ok, then Google Play services.
Netflix hd playback too
Yeah definitely. I really need Xposed Edge for the gestures. I have assigned 12 functions amongst the four edges which works wonders on this already super fast phone.
Exi for Swiftkey, for far easier and quicker typing.
ChromePie, easier to access various options.
Minminguard, in-app ad blocking.
Adaway.
GravityBox, for finer tweaking of ROM.
Titanium Backup.

You don't need root for that really.
Have always rooted my phones since 2009, but this is the first where I haven't rooted (yet). Normally I'd root a new phone within 10 minutes after receiving it. But this phone pretty much has it all so no need to root (yet). Only thing I miss is a complete dark theme. OPs strategy with only theming about 70% of the interface is odd, but I hope that Android Q will fix that once it's officially released for this phone.

Seems like it's installed the easiest and most seamless with root though.
Regardless, there are several other reasons I mentioned I use root for, so why not just install YouTube Vanced with root as well
I'm on the fence myself. I do miss Substratum, but afraid to lose Netflix HD permanently and i had issues with SPay not working on my Pixel 3 XL after rooting. Not sure what i want to do......
Been rooting my phones since my first Android and the OG Droid Motorola A855. I doubt you may find too many members here that will vote the last question of your poll, since this site has become THE place for those who want to root and ROM.
For me it's:
Titanium
Ad Away
Renovate
and whatever other reason I feel like. I received my 7 Pro, charged the battery and the only reason I booted it to system was to get developers options and OK the oem unlocking. Didn't even sign it in on first boot.
I finally rooted a few days ago. Basic root is easy. EdXposed and gravity box and that kind of stuff you need to pay attention to a bit more unless you've done it before (which i have not)
Life begins after root! Google pay and Samsung pa works without issues on OP 7 Pro. Just hide Magisk from all google and Samsung apps (if using a Gear S3 like I am)
I find that I need it for my personal needs/wants due to Swift installer support and native call recording. Plus having TB to uninstall some system apps that I don't want/need is also a plus.
Personally, I don't need root do much. But I do need magisk and modules as well as magisk ROMs. Everything else is a plus.

A few questions about rooting from a noobie.

I haven't rooted a phone since I had my Galaxy S2 so i'm a bit out of the loop.
I'm just wondering if it's possible to continue using banking apps (Halifax) and Google Pay after rooting?
Is it possible to return to completely stock when the time comes to sell the phone?
Can anyone recommend a custom rom to try first? I'm not looking for any specific features i'm just a bit bored and fancy tinkering with my phone
Thanks

Question Drawbacks of rooting?

I've heard that previous samsung phones disabled certain features, are there any known drawbacks for rooting the s22 ultra? Will magisk be able to hide the status?
Instantly lose warranty.
Troubleshooting will be harder as you alter the setup and make the device unique from the stock ones.
No going back once you trip the Knox e-fuse.
No secure folder or Knox functionality.
Trade-in option with Samsung or carriers is gone once the e-fuse is tripped.
The only way to revert the e-fuse trip is to replace the mobo as it's a physical eprom like breakable link within a chipset likely a big proprietary BGA.

I don't know about the other stuff but banking apps work fine with magisk+zgysik+adaway combination.
Root is now a personal choice. Where I am it does not void the warranty. A hardware failure must still be covered. As far as everything else goes you just need to decide if it's worth it. Last time I rooted the only real benefit I got was AdAway. Sure I could use Titanium Backup, but there was no point in it anymore. Using magisk-hide made G-Pay and everything else work and I could run a custom kernel but it actually wasn't worth the hassle. To me anyway....
If it weren't for the warranty and such, ZERO. I've been on Pixels for years and the first thing I do when I get a phone is unlock the bootloader so I can root when it's available. Viper4Android and DarQ are worth it alone. Not being able to root is going to be a serious adjustment for me.

But agree, development is pain on Samsung now a days, though on A12 everything good now except old SPay and s pass issue
