Google GPS without a GPS!!!!

Hey just thought id share this ran across it while on gsmarenaapparently google has just announced a new version of google maps that will tell u ur location within 1-2 km of u actual location and u dont need to have a GPS
i have used it and it tolod me my location within 500m
apparently it will use the tower that ur near to triangulate ur position
its great also has a meter to show how much KB`s ur transfering here the location http://www.google.com/gmm

Google Maps 2.x is nice, and thats an interesting feature, but for me it had my location about 2 miles from where I really was (my location was even outside of the circle it showed saying that I was somewhere inside that circle).
I've tried it in 3 places and same result in all three.
Ah well. Nice for getting a general idea of where you are, but don't expect to use it for real navigation

I tested this today driving down 45 miles of Los Angeles freeway and was literally shocked out how closely it tracked my location. Most of the trip it had me pinpointed (no range circle at all). Some locations it had to guess a range, between canyons or tall buildings.
I knew the towers could find your general vacinity, but had no idea they could come that close.
Neat feature!

any one have a package for this new google maps?

I like it. Now I'm not so pressed to get a phone with GPS. I guess if you're in a metro area it will work better (assuming more towers). I like how it even will do directions to addresses in the contact app.

Loved My Location for the 1 day I had it. I upgraded my AT&T 8525 from WM5 to the official htc WM6 Professional and now everytime I try to use My Location it tells me, "Your current location is temporarily unavailable." I think the answer to my problem and others who are experiencing it maybe be in Menu-.Options-> GPS settings, and properly configuring the My Location Settings. If anyone has a solution, any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Isn't that boost mobile (or whatever that company is). I wouldn't want that service. Talk about "Spyware". I'd imagine there are privacy laws against such a thing. Kind of like it being illegal (in the US) to record a phone conversation unless you let the person being recorded know about it.

hey yeah i get that sometimes here in pakistan but dont worry abt it just give it another try in a coupl eof minutes and it will show

my experience
i used the new Version of Gmaps yesterday in the Atlanta/decuater area. i was on the free way on GA-400, I-285 & other various streets(in decuater,Ga).
on GA-400 i received a general 1,200 meters from exits 15-11. Ounce in a more populous area i was getting even better range within 1,000 meters or so.
i also started using the traffic Feature which provided me with information leading to make the decision to take I-285. on that highway i continued get about 1,00 meters ounce out of the red and into the yellow after the first few exits or so i got a real good distance was about 300 or so each time and continued until i got off the freeway though sometimes it had me on the opposite side. (though a quick "my location" and back where i belong) ounce off and on a suburban area with stores shopping centers and sub-divisions i had no idea where i was yet Gmap new the way. with finding my location every5 seconds i arrived about 10 minutes off of the expressway
oh and the addresses in the contact app is prty kool. like if you have a contact's adress stored on there number and click it

Not so good here in Central Oregon. It is showing my current location actually 37.5 miles SouthEast of my actual location. I don't understand the BIG discrepancy as the closest T-Mobile tower is less than half-a-mile from my current position.
Cool concept though.

this is just in Beta man. im sure itll get better & more precise later. at my house im about 1.1 miles from where i should be, but then again im in the country

I'm guessing that you really need to be covered by two or more towers for the location to be accurate.

That is what I was thinking. Now that google has released something like this I can imagine that anyone might break down the code and make it so they can track any phone?
I do a lot of visiting stores for my company and the last thing I want is someone knowing we are in the area by using something like this.

So I added it to my MDA and I get the screen that is blank for the most part with the little sqigglies in the square fashion.
Now is this becasue I don't have the Data or Hotspots plan??
I'm guessing that it won't work correctly (read: at all) unless I have one or both of these.
Can anyone shed some light? I'd really like to have this feature as well.

the problem some of you dont realise is that if live in a small town with a little bit of cell towers than the acuracy is not that great. i live in nyc and the acuracy is pin point, perfect. it locates me exactly where i am and the more u use it the better it gets. remember it picks up your locstion by bouncing you signal off cell towers. less cell towerless accuracy, more cell towers greater the accuracy

So I learned a new trick from this and other GPS threads.
1. Start AT&T Navigator.
2. Let it sit on the Terms of Service page for a few seconds.
3. Click Exit. (Don't agree, don't sign up, don't pay anything.)
4. Use GPS Test, Maps or other apps that need GPS
I get an excellent lock on all of a sudden. It's accurate and stays accurate. Typically 15-30 meters accuracy indoors, sometimes 5-10 meters outdoors or in car.
So that AT&T bloatware is good for something. More proof it's a software fix.

This was very helpful. Thanks for sharing it with us. I tried using AT&T Maps before and after I got a fix, I opened google maps. It was able to track me with reasonable accuracy for my 10 minute drive after that. I'm not sure if AT&T Navigator will work any better, but I'm certainly impressed with the results I've gotten so far.

So does this mean that it will be accurate, and not show you driving in a field?
If so, for how long? Need to do this every time you use the GPS?

Hmmm. But what about those of us that have cleaned out the ATT bloatware?
Is it worth reinstalling?

I would rather wait for the update than load Att crap back on my phone.

What's the state of GPS on this phone in todays date ? Did it ever get fixed to be as accurate as other phones ?
Update 9/30/10: I was pretty hopeless about the GPS after reading all of your comments. Today I met a dude on campus with a captivate. We were sitting inside a building, so I decided to test out his captivate against my Eris. I turned GPS on on both devices, and started google maps. The captivate got a lock withing 10 seconds as did my Eris. My eris had an accuracy of 40m, while the captivate had 60m. Not bad, considering what I have been reading here.

Update supposedly did not contain a GPS fix. Supposedly getting the official fix by months end as per level 2 Samsung tech.

The update did nothing for the GPS. The GPS is still junk on these phones. Samsung is one of the most disorganised companies there are.

My gps works fine. But then again I don't sit around waiting for the manufacturer... I sit around waiting for devs.

Even with the tweaks that people put out on here it's still worthless. I don't know if it's an issue with the drivers that control the GPS or what but it's not normal for it to be this bad. I sent my phone back to Wirefly and if they send me a new one I know the GPS is still going to be junk on it so I may sell it and buy a different phone that runs on at&t.

Actually my gps sucked balls before the update and now works extremely well. The update may not have contained a gps fix but mine has been much improved since the update. Before the update I would be lucky to lock onto 1 sat. Now I am able to lock onto 7-9 sats in under 20 seconds and pretty much stay locked.

Are you using the GPS Test app to get these locks? Or is there something else that shows how many satellites you're receiving info from? Because I can get 10 satellites 'locked' no problem using the GPS test app, but Google Maps or the Navigation app both still take forever to show my location, and track my movement, most of which is completely wrong (for ex it will have me driving in fields instead of on roads).

For me I can now lock indoors, which I could never do before. This is in the Gmaps app
Also I can actually get a lock in an urban setting (apts and buildings everywhere) and not have to stand out in a field somewhere for five minutes

I use gps test to see how many locks I'll get. But, I can fire up google maps or google navigation without warming up with gps test and still be up and running within 20 seconds.

Gathering anecdotal reports on whether the GPS is fixed is worthless.
Some people get a lock indoors and think it is fixed, while others do serious Google Navigation and My Tracks testing and find it is not fixed.
I do not think the GPS is fixed to be as accurate as other phones. Yes, it has improved since stock, but stock was garbage -- now it is just poor.

You people keep saying it works on your captivates. We know your either full of it or have a special edition phone that no one else got. No bodies captivate works 100% on GPS. If you think yours works then PROVE it!!! Take a long drive and track it on a map and post it here. I've yet to see such. QUIT SAYING IT WORKS WHEN IT DON'T.

Thank You! Locking on Satellites DOES NOT mean the GPS works - Hell you can just use location to find out where you are - GPS is for MOVEMENT and how WELL it keeps up with MOVEMENT. If People keep saying that it works it's improved after the update - Samsung nor At&t will do anything to fix it (don't believe me just call them and they will get angry telling you how the update fix ALL that was wrong with the phone). PLEASE stop posting it's FIXED or IT WORKS because it can see and lock on satellites. Drive/Walk with this phone and then ANY other phone - Trust it will make you want to SLAP someone at Samsung & At&t.

i admit after the JH7 update, gps locks in alot quicker! but it still samsung garbage! gps navigation show Turn right on Pine Ave, i turned Pine ave 2 block ago, gps navigation still showing Turn right on Pine ave. or i waiting at red light waiting to make a turn on Pine ave, gps navagion already tell me the next turn Turn right on Rose Ave. so do i turn right on Pine or keep driving straight and turn right on Rose?

Are you sure this is a GPS problem and not crap code for navigation app?

FAA Warns GPS Issues SouthEastern US Defenense Dept Tests

Pulled this off the Engadget site, just in case others began to see issues with GPS like I have today.
"Don't panic, but anyone planning on using GPS in the southeastern US for the next month or so will likely want to make sure they have a fallback option. That's according to a flight advisory just issued by the FAA, which warns pilots that their GPS signal "may be unreliable or unavailable" due to "GPS tests" that the Department of Defense will be conducting between January 20th and February 22nd. Details are fairly light beyond that, but the FAA does note that when the "tests" occur they will be active for 45 minutes, and be followed by 15 minutes of off time -- additional notices to pilots will apparently be issued at least 24 hours prior to any test. Of course, while this particular advisory is directed at pilots, it will presumably will also affect all other GPS devices, as the FAA doesn't mention any GPS issues specific to aviation."

Call me cynical but I don't see this being a good thing. DOD shutting down the gps. I'm waiting for breaking news to cut into judge judy any second.

Well atleast others get a chance to experience what we go through everyday!

Since updating the modem to JK4 the GPS in my cappy is working perfectly with locks in a few seconds even indoors.

I guess Samsung has enough influence to get the DOD to update the GPS system so it will work with the Captivate.
And some of you were bashing Samsung...

Thanks for posting this, I am not only a Cappy owner but a "geocacher" as well. And for you worried about our gps on the captivate, try out the new FireFly Rom on this site, gps works great. Connects quickly, great Rom by Adam.

My GPS has been great, but it's **** at the moment. I hope this is the cause.

maybe your using the wrong modem/rom combo.
i am having no issues with firefly (rogers base) or phoenix (i9000 base) + jk4 modem in midwest (build 1007).

Considering that the US Government owns all current GPS satellites world wide (and they are operated by the DoD), we should all be grateful that we have free use of the GPS satellites. If the DoD wants to do upgrades or testing, there is not much anyone can do about it.

Yes. The worldwide GPS system is owned by the US government and operated and maintained by the DoD. Who else can afford billions to put satellites in the sky and then let everyone use them for free? If you don't believe me, perform a quick google search.

GPS issue a conflict with Google Maps?

This question goes to anyone using CoPilot 8, MapQuest or any tracking software that isn't Google Maps 5.0. Are you keeping locks? Similar to how using LBStest mode allows for a faster and more stable lock than one from GMaps
I ask this because I just downloaded the new MapQuest thats free on the Market and I'm getting a lock down to 10 yards and Max 32 yards out. But the interesting thing about it is that it maintains the lock even when moving.
For those who are well aware of the GPS issue it isn't so much the locking as it the maintaining so my question was are people getting better results with GPS programs that aren't Google Maps? And if so do you think the issue with GPS may also be a conflict with how Google Maps utilizes the GPS drivers?

Yes I noticed the same thing, Google maps was very poor at keeping on track and locks. I switched to Navigon about 2 months ago and have never been happier. I really think all the GPS issue are related to Google maps and not the hardware as everyone is saying.

I just downloaded Mapquest app. Will test it out later today and report back. Will drive 1 way with google, and 1 way with Mapquest.

great...have been waiting for a mapquest app hadn't realized it was available yet. hopefully it works as well as the iphone mapquest app..gonna test it out on the ride home.

It always was odd to me that GPSTest would hold 7 satellite locks with a correct speedometer and whatnot, yet Googlemaps can't track me at all.

I played with MapQuest a bit the other day when it was released. During one drive it seemed to be a bit better than Google Nav in tracking, but was still sub-par. These observations weren't scientific by any means, but just what I noticed when I tried the app out.

It seems to be a convoluted issue. I can attest that with a Bluetooth GPS receiver for my Captivate that Google Maps/Navigator works marvelously, whereas it is marginal with just the Captivate GPS.
With that said I have not tried the other software referenced but I think I might give it a shot now.

Yeah I noticed for mine that GMaps at least 2 minutes in no matter what modem I was currently testing just go ahead and drop the signal. But on MapQuest it holds the signal and granted sometimes it shows me in the other lane but at least it moving with me lol

Hmm map quest shows where im sitting at in my house exactly while google maps has me out across the road... Ill test it navigation and tacking later. Wish it was more snappy as gmaps.

Truth is, I thought the same when Bing Maps came out but it still didn't track well at all.

I wonder if AT&T borked the GPS/Google Maps interaction to boost subscriptions to their paid navigation service

Works great with other phones.
My brother's Bold has GPS lock in Google Maps up to 3 feet.

I used to have the bold. Those things have exceptional radios! But really all I wanted to see here is if people were getting the same results with GPS alternatives

Well, after my 15 mile drive, I actually saw better tracking with Google Navigation than with Mapquest.
Plus, I like the actual UI better.
It would have been worth switching for better tracking, but the Mpaquest app kept losing me, then finding me again. Next time to be sure, I'll use them again, but Google going, and Mapquest coming back.

Interesting I noticed the exact opposite and the Google Nav/Maps never maintains a lock or it holds it until it doesn't think I'm looking anymore lol. While MapQuest has successfully locked inside 10 seconds and held it

It seems to be a convoluted issue. I can attest that with a Bluetooth GPS receiver for my Captivate that Google Maps/Navigator works marvelously, whereas it is marginal with just the Captivate GPS.
With that said I have not tried the other software referenced but I think I might give it a shot now.

Yes. EXTREMELY convoluted. To point it's possible that the Google Maps Navigation could be responsible (it is still in beta after all). But then again, it seems to work just great on other devices.
I've been playing with software tweaks for a few weeks now, but in all honesty I'm not sure it's even possible to get it fixed with software alone as it seems likely that the hardware design is also to blame.

I'm running Supernova 2.0.6, haven't changed any settings since flashing.

Do you know if that ROM has the north-america.pool.ntp server GPS fix set? which basically just changes the region of the device gps
EDIT: Also what modem does it have? I'm using NKP1 (best results so far) and was going to test this with JL2 later

This gps issue seems no different then the issues experienced by HTC devices in the past. A quick scan through any gps topic usually produces drastically differwnt experiences ranging from. "never had a problem" to " im returning this pos!""
I just got my captivate and would be considered a gps power user i suppose. I use everytrail.com,gmaps w latitude and several other geocaching programs. i have yet to experience anything negatove with the reaction or tracking of the gps --- (wait for it)... That is to say nothing unexpected. I have some slight lag after not using ot for days, in the redwoods and many trails in california nothing short of a 500 dollar handheld dedicated gps will even get signal. My point being users who have been dealing with gps for a few years now seem to understand what is actually happening... And give the device some leeway. Ive worked in the field for gettropcs. Verizon sprint att.... NOTHING can be done when installing a Modcell until you triangulate. Tree cover, moisture, cloud cover, etc. Can all play a role. (nevermind the brainiacs in their bedroom with no windows who cant figure out why they cant lock)
BTWi paid fifty dollars for my captivates. Originally 150 thrpugh preimiere i walked into target and fell over when i saw them for fifty. I called Nd threatened to walk and they credited my account 100 dollars for each phone.
