GPS issue a conflict with Google Maps? - Captivate General

This question goes to anyone using CoPilot 8, MapQuest or any tracking software that isn't Google Maps 5.0. Are you keeping locks? Similar to how using LBStest mode allows for a faster and more stable lock than one from GMaps
I ask this because I just downloaded the new MapQuest thats free on the Market and I'm getting a lock down to 10 yards and Max 32 yards out. But the interesting thing about it is that it maintains the lock even when moving.
For those who are well aware of the GPS issue it isn't so much the locking as it the maintaining so my question was are people getting better results with GPS programs that aren't Google Maps? And if so do you think the issue with GPS may also be a conflict with how Google Maps utilizes the GPS drivers?

Yes I noticed the same thing, Google maps was very poor at keeping on track and locks. I switched to Navigon about 2 months ago and have never been happier. I really think all the GPS issue are related to Google maps and not the hardware as everyone is saying.

I just downloaded Mapquest app. Will test it out later today and report back. Will drive 1 way with google, and 1 way with Mapquest.

great...have been waiting for a mapquest app hadn't realized it was available yet. hopefully it works as well as the iphone mapquest app..gonna test it out on the ride home.

It always was odd to me that GPSTest would hold 7 satellite locks with a correct speedometer and whatnot, yet Googlemaps can't track me at all.

I played with MapQuest a bit the other day when it was released. During one drive it seemed to be a bit better than Google Nav in tracking, but was still sub-par. These observations weren't scientific by any means, but just what I noticed when I tried the app out.

It seems to be a convoluted issue. I can attest that with a Bluetooth GPS receiver for my Captivate that Google Maps/Navigator works marvelously, whereas it is marginal with just the Captivate GPS.
With that said I have not tried the other software referenced but I think I might give it a shot now.

Yeah I noticed for mine that GMaps at least 2 minutes in no matter what modem I was currently testing just go ahead and drop the signal. But on MapQuest it holds the signal and granted sometimes it shows me in the other lane but at least it moving with me lol

Hmm map quest shows where im sitting at in my house exactly while google maps has me out across the road... Ill test it navigation and tacking later. Wish it was more snappy as gmaps.

Truth is, I thought the same when Bing Maps came out but it still didn't track well at all.

I wonder if AT&T borked the GPS/Google Maps interaction to boost subscriptions to their paid navigation service

Well, after my 15 mile drive, I actually saw better tracking with Google Navigation than with Mapquest.
Plus, I like the actual UI better.
It would have been worth switching for better tracking, but the Mpaquest app kept losing me, then finding me again. Next time to be sure, I'll use them again, but Google going, and Mapquest coming back.

Interesting I noticed the exact opposite and the Google Nav/Maps never maintains a lock or it holds it until it doesn't think I'm looking anymore lol. While MapQuest has successfully locked inside 10 seconds and held it
Do you have any GPS settings edited or are you just stock?

Yes. EXTREMELY convoluted. To point it's possible that the Google Maps Navigation could be responsible (it is still in beta after all). But then again, it seems to work just great on other devices.
I've been playing with software tweaks for a few weeks now, but in all honesty I'm not sure it's even possible to get it fixed with software alone as it seems likely that the hardware design is also to blame.

Do you know if that ROM has the north-america.pool.ntp server GPS fix set? which basically just changes the region of the device gps
EDIT: Also what modem does it have? I'm using NKP1 (best results so far) and was going to test this with JL2 later

This gps issue seems no different then the issues experienced by HTC devices in the past. A quick scan through any gps topic usually produces drastically differwnt experiences ranging from. "never had a problem" to " im returning this pos!""
I just got my captivate and would be considered a gps power user i suppose. I use everytrail.com,gmaps w latitude and several other geocaching programs. i have yet to experience anything negatove with the reaction or tracking of the gps --- (wait for it)... That is to say nothing unexpected. I have some slight lag after not using ot for days, in the redwoods and many trails in california nothing short of a 500 dollar handheld dedicated gps will even get signal. My point being users who have been dealing with gps for a few years now seem to understand what is actually happening... And give the device some leeway. Ive worked in the field for gettropcs. Verizon sprint att.... NOTHING can be done when installing a Modcell until you triangulate. Tree cover, moisture, cloud cover, etc. Can all play a role. (nevermind the brainiacs in their bedroom with no windows who cant figure out why they cant lock)
BTWi paid fifty dollars for my captivates. Originally 150 thrpugh preimiere i walked into target and fell over when i saw them for fifty. I called Nd threatened to walk and they credited my account 100 dollars for each phone.

State of GPS on this phone ?

What's the state of GPS on this phone in todays date ? Did it ever get fixed to be as accurate as other phones ?
Update 9/30/10: I was pretty hopeless about the GPS after reading all of your comments. Today I met a dude on campus with a captivate. We were sitting inside a building, so I decided to test out his captivate against my Eris. I turned GPS on on both devices, and started google maps. The captivate got a lock withing 10 seconds as did my Eris. My eris had an accuracy of 40m, while the captivate had 60m. Not bad, considering what I have been reading here.

The update did nothing for the GPS. The GPS is still junk on these phones. Samsung is one of the most disorganised companies there are.

Even with the tweaks that people put out on here it's still worthless. I don't know if it's an issue with the drivers that control the GPS or what but it's not normal for it to be this bad. I sent my phone back to Wirefly and if they send me a new one I know the GPS is still going to be junk on it so I may sell it and buy a different phone that runs on at&t.

Actually my gps sucked balls before the update and now works extremely well. The update may not have contained a gps fix but mine has been much improved since the update. Before the update I would be lucky to lock onto 1 sat. Now I am able to lock onto 7-9 sats in under 20 seconds and pretty much stay locked.
Are you using the GPS Test app to get these locks? Or is there something else that shows how many satellites you're receiving info from? Because I can get 10 satellites 'locked' no problem using the GPS test app, but Google Maps or the Navigation app both still take forever to show my location, and track my movement, most of which is completely wrong (for ex it will have me driving in fields instead of on roads).
For me I can now lock indoors, which I could never do before. This is in the Gmaps app
Also I can actually get a lock in an urban setting (apts and buildings everywhere) and not have to stand out in a field somewhere for five minutes
There has to be some kind of tweak in the latest update, there just has to

I use gps test to see how many locks I'll get. But, I can fire up google maps or google navigation without warming up with gps test and still be up and running within 20 seconds.
Gathering anecdotal reports on whether the GPS is fixed is worthless.
Some people get a lock indoors and think it is fixed, while others do serious Google Navigation and My Tracks testing and find it is not fixed.
I do not think the GPS is fixed to be as accurate as other phones. Yes, it has improved since stock, but stock was garbage -- now it is just poor.

Thank You! Locking on Satellites DOES NOT mean the GPS works - Hell you can just use location to find out where you are - GPS is for MOVEMENT and how WELL it keeps up with MOVEMENT. If People keep saying that it works it's improved after the update - Samsung nor At&t will do anything to fix it (don't believe me just call them and they will get angry telling you how the update fix ALL that was wrong with the phone). PLEASE stop posting it's FIXED or IT WORKS because it can see and lock on satellites. Drive/Walk with this phone and then ANY other phone - Trust it will make you want to SLAP someone at Samsung & At&t.

Based on my experience with the app on my 3gS, the advantage to this would be having the maps stored locally on the phone. Therefore you have some level of dead reckoning and aren't relying on your data connection to supply map data. AFAIK, gps is way more reliable connection wise than data. So with this app even if you have poor or no signal, the app can still work if there's gps.
What was there spport like?
I really would like to have lane assistance wich as far as i know google does not...neither does sprint.

Ya, if you are traveling local that's probably not an issue, but if you are traveling across states - it's likely that you will hit dead spots in your 3g or 1x coverage even and that means no google maps.

(Q) Nexus S Gps

So...I currently own a vibrant and want to pick up a nexus s mainly because I'll be guaranteed android upgrades. My main concern is if the nexus s utilizes the same gps chip as the other galaxy s phones. If it does, it is an epic fail because gps accuracy is still HORRID on these phones and would be a total dealbreaker.
Anyone know the answer?

The Nexus S has an improved antenna.
But even then the GPS issues on the Galaxy S series were mostly software ones since they've now been patched between the update, and the app ont he market to reset the gps settings.

REQUEST
Those who already have their phone: please make a GPS test as it follows:
choose a location outside which you can easily identify on google earth (a tree, a big rock, something small but visible on satellite view)
go out there and use an app which shows GPS coordinates - preferably the free app GPS test
stand next to object and get the coordinates, write it down, etc (for this wait a while till more precise fix)
go back to house, type the coordinates into Google Earth
measure the distance between the location you got with your phone and the real object using Google Earths measuring tool
post the results here
Well, I'm not gonna do all that, but maybe this will help.
I did a cold start on Maps. Got a lock on within 10 seconds. Pretty damn good. Now I'm using GPS Test app and was able to lock on all satellites. 7 out of 7. This is all within my house. Wifi is off.
I can happily say that GPS works fine. From my experience anyways.

They also said they were driving while trying to get a lock... And in my experience (Nexus S, TomTom, Garmin), a GPS can't get a lock while you're moving. Maybe the best ones can, but their test is not enough to say that Nexus S sucks.

Those that say that the GPS issues of the Galaxy S line of phones were fixed via the software update and market app probably don't own a Galaxy S phone. The GPS is definitely not fixed. In fact, it's the only reason why I'm in this forum. I'm willing to give up AT&T 3G for a working GPS -- I plan to sell my Captivate and buy a Nexus S if the GPS works.
Also, those that say they got a fast lock and great accuracy, that doesn't exactly mean anything yet. Most Galaxy S users had great GPS performance out-the-box, and after a hard reset. But the performance gradually degrades over the course of a few days, and then you eventually want to throw your phone out the window. So the fact that only some Nexus S owners have great GPS performance -- and not ALL -- leaves me discouraged. But we should have a better assessment after a few days.
Maybe Samsung and/or Google also released in market the pieces that they have produced, before changing the GPS antenna....
Maybe that's why some users have GPS issues and others not...
So maybe we have 2 deferent produced devices....
Nice scenario don't you think???

Looking for Offline Maps

My wife and are are headed to New Orleans this week (From STL).
Today, just for a test, I took out my note and tried the GPS. I was under the assumption that maps would load, and the GPS would give us location. I was wrong. It seems you have to do available offline in Google Maps.
The problem is, it only lets me capture a VERY small section of the map.
Are there other map applications that I could use with the GPS for this trip that are available offline?

you can capture multiple small sections and they'll be under "my places". since i haven't tested it on a trip that crosses multiple sections i'm not sure how seamless it works across them.
First, I don't know if you noticed but the offline mode capture area can be adjusted. Use the two finger zoom method to zoom out to capture more in one shot. Your maximum capture area is limited to 86 MB. From my experience this allows a fairly large area. About 60 miles wide. Just remember while the maps will work you will need connectivity if you want navigation to work.
To get offline maps with navigation I definitely recommend Sygic and comes with a free trial period which will let you evaluate the app before purchasing the maps. For free options navfree is out there but I have no idea how good it is. Maybe others can comment on navigation experience with navfree.

I've never used a GPS, so take this for what it's worth, but I downloaded NavFree USA the other day. After that, I downloaded their New York map ('cause that's where I live). It took a while to download that, but afterward worked great. This may seem ignorant, but I didn't realize you could use GPS when not connected to WiFi. But the fact that I could use this as a GPS in my car, with no data connection, was a huge surprise to me.
Of course, you don't things like current traffic issues, but having never used a GPS at all, I was pretty pleased.

OSMAnd is a good bet - you could test out with the free version, even though in theory I could build a fully working version from source, the $3-4 or so is worth auto-updating from the Market for an unrestricted version.
It does have offline routing, however I haven't really "stress tested" it for accuracy.

Hummm .. well that depends on how much gas and time you waste for getting lost without a accurate offline map.....
Giggles.
Hy Erica, you moved on from the A500 or just surfing the forums?
What I like with Copliot is you can install it on all your android devices, maps too. I have it on my Note 10.1, 2 Acer A501's, 2 SGS3's, and my 2 galaxy tabs as well as an old HTC HD 2( beast of a phone).
And I agree that copilot is awesome but here in Oz there aren't too many map updates...
We're the land that copilot forgot.....
I use navigation systems for a living. I flew for the USAF, and fly worldwide for a major airline now. In addition to that, I've used all types of GPS apps and dedicated GPS in many cities and places around the USA and around the world.
Co-Pilot isn't a bad app, but their maps are truly horrible in many areas. I would recommend Co-Pilot only if you are familiar with the area you'll be using it. I've tried it in many cities where the maps don't even have the major freeways correct. Epic Fail.
Sygic has a decent--not great--interface and excellent maps. Plus, they have maps for locations all around the globe. HOWEVER, their POI search is horribly flawed. If you're within 25 miles of what you're looking for, it works OK. If you're looking or something further away it can be next to impossible to find it. Sygic concentrates on form over function. Fail.
Unfortunately, I have yet to try an Android based GPS Nav app that I would recommend for use in an unfamiliar area. Even Google Maps has serious issues that render it less than optimal.
I would highly recommend getting one of Garmin's GPSs from last year, like the 3750. You can pick that up on Amazon for less than $150. Or Sears has the 3790 with lifetime map updates for less than $180. Easily pocketable and works great. Use Google maps at the hotel to decide what you want to see, use a dedicated GPS to get you there.
i can do both cant i . hehe

Hi there.. Well i still have (kinda have) my a500. its a awesome device. I bought two nexus 7 tablets got it because it would fit in my purse. But ended up sending it back for a exchange because of lousy build issues. The replacement was worse. So i sent it back and waiting for a refund . Monday or tuesday im getting a NOTE 10.1 .. Bad experience with the nexus 7 i do not wanna try a 3 rd . i love my wacom intuos so thought this would fit me better.
Think i should buy. Well i have to get something my Spouse (better half so she says) tells me i do NOT get my acer back.. so im tablet less right now... boohoooooo
nice seeing ya over here.
Sorry if this is off topic .. but yes i USE Co-pilot in several devices as well. Also used to use there commercial version in work truck. Great company. as i said above...
Tom Tom is launching a new app this month with off line ability. This is the mapping software that I are in telenav

gps issues

I have a mix 3 8gb/256 and everything seems to be fine on T-Mobile but I am having GPS issues. Google Maps cannot find my location. It does have location permissions. Location is set to high accuracy. Anyone else in the US seeing this as well?

Mine actually is working great now. Just stepped outside for a bit and it locks really well with very high precision. I was inside next to a window when I first tested... Apparently it didn't like that

I really love the slider and do not own one but you are getting ripped off (no band 12/71). GPS only has access to US L1/L5 bands. The China/Euro sats are disabled by broadcomm chip if you are in the United States which means access to less L1/L5 bands brought to you by?? So, if you were in a basement, L1/L5 bands would still work well if all sats were working. Your by a window and cannot make a lock really sucks, huh? This phone is neutered too much for US users.

I disagree. To some, band 71 may be a game changer but the Seattle area doesn't even have it. I think it a bit silly to care too much about something that barely came into existence. In the two or so years I will have this phone it just won't matter to me. I have been perfectly satisfied with my previous phones without it.
As for GPS it seems to lock just fine in my car and out walking about... In fact much more precise than my old phone.... So that is 99% of my use of GPS and I imagine most others as well. Also just this past week the FCC cleared the use of the euro satellites in the US so unless it's out of the reach of software or firmware (very unlikely) then that won't matter either very soon.
It's actually working well now. Just needed an initial lock outside I guess.

The deal is that it is missing even band 12. Band 71 is rolling faster then some expected. That time table of 2020 has been upped by about a year, possible. Most channels have already cleared (they have shut down). I really love the concept of this phone but if I was on ATT, I would jump in and buy it. I just think xiaomi is not trying in the US market, yet. As far as a software fix for the GPS, it would have to be on the firmware side of the phone. That cannot be updated by software. I think Broadcomm made a deal and since most of the sale of phones are targeted for sale outside the US, Xiaomi threw in the towel. So, you will be able to tell if you ever will get the euro sats by going to the play store and installing:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.gpstest
and see if you ever do get the euro sats on this phone. I do not think so, though because it is hard coded into the Broadcomm chip. If xiaomi decides to cut corners they may keep buying this chip for a year or two before the new ones get updated. Anyway, let us all know.
Edit: It does have band 12.
No issue with mine, make sure to give all the needed permission to google maps app. Also if its your first time locking in, do it outdoors first. If you're indoor , it may take awhile but subsequently it's really quick and accurate.

I may be wrong! Wow, that is good news! Can you lock on to some sats and do a print screen so I can see what is up there?? And post that print screen! Thanks!

Wow, that is new. Looks like no software upgrade is needed. It looks like the euro sats were sending a blocking code signals for the US region in order to shut down the receiver portion in the Broadcomm chip (I would assume). So, it appears the same would be true for the china sats. With how many sats you are receiving, this phone is going to get great gps reception, now! I think I may get this phone when the global version comes out. I was really on the fence about this phone but with band 12, this phone will still get great coverage.
New device and having the same problem (EU). No GPS when indoors. If I go outside it works...
Is it a hardware defect or a software problem?
I was having the same issue. I did two things and guess one of them fixed it:
1 disable MiUi optimization in developer settings
2 give all permissions to Google play services. This was a little tricky as the default app manager doesn't allow you to modify Google play services permissions. I installed MIUP from Google play store and used the app manager to give the permissions.
GPS works fine indoors now

I did the 2nd. Google Play services had the "Location" permission turned off. This seems to have fixed it! Thanks
Is this normal? GPS signal seems to be very bad. Is there a solution?

Did not help for me. GPS is still bad inside the building. However first step should have been important as GPS started working when I have turned of Wifi. Not sure if this was a coincidence or not.

If you just bought the phone, take it outside. Some have reported that on the first lock, it may do a cold start an have GPS issues. Never the less, goto google play store and load the app "GPS Status" app in.

Your phone should get a minimum of 20 sats. The GPS is awsome on this phone even in indoors. GPS Status gets the AGPS data off the internet to speed up where the sats are. Taking it outside will do the same thing for the first time, also. Xiaomi MI Mix 3 may have a program to get the AGPS when connected to WIFI.
I'm in the state of Massachusetts, USA. My GPS wasn't working even though I was outside my house for about 4hrs since getting the phone. What worked for me was downloading the app mentioned above:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ndroid.gpstest
( thanks to vq8acsxht for posting) let it run and after a few minutes I noticed my GPS was working. Really was a pain... I tried ubering and my phone thought I was in some country in the continent of Africa lols
