HTC u11 Warranty - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

i'm having an issue with my phone which is that the charging cable does not always stay connected and just falls out randomly. i have tried different cables and same issue. i believe my charging port on the phone seems to have deteriorated since i got the phone in May 2017. I got in touch with HTC and they have said that my phone is in warranty but as it is a hardware issue i would need to pay for it to be fixed by them
i explained that it is still in the 24 month warranty and they said that their policy changed and they do not cover hardware issues within the warranty anymore!
is there anything i can do to get them to repair the phone without incurring a cost?

Clean the USB port with a dressmakers pin but be careful not to damage the gold pins in the port.

You could try to get HTC to fix it by going up the corporate chain and complain. Squeaky wheel always gets the grease. Or you could find a reputable repair shop and get the jack replaced but that will cost you. Good luck.

old Post but I agree with shivadow.
Had same problem on pixel 2. Powered down and used a needle to clean the debris out. Good as new.

[Q] Dock failure and boot issue after drop

I have an unlocked rooted TF300T. It's in one of the trifold Poetic cases, the padded ones. Yesterday it fell off my bed about 3ft onto the floor whilst closed.
I picked it up and tried it and it seemed to work OK, but then I noted later that the SD card wasn't being recognised. This has happened a few times in the past and usually a simple reboot solves it. So, a reboot later and I found it still didn't recognise the SD card, and also the keyboard wasn't working. In fact, the tablet had stopped recognising that the dock was connected at all.
I carried on fiddling around, connecting and disconnecting the dock and suddenly my tablet shut off. I tried to boot it up but nothing happened. I tried a hard reset, nothing.
I was aware that the dock had been low on charge so I split them up and charged the dock with one cable and the pad with a separate one. Once the lights were green I tried to boot my tablet and it failed to boot. After a lot of messing, and in the end a sharp tap to the tablet back, I managed to boot it.
However, when I connect the dock it is still not recognised. I've tried the dock on the wife's TF300T and it works fine, and I've tried her dock on my pad and it isn't recognised so this is a problem with the tablet and not the dock.
The pad still charges via the docking port (but not via the dock).
So I have a few questions. My pad is less than a year old so would be in warranty were it not for the fact I'd unlocked it
Is there any chance if this is a hardware failure ASUS will still repair it under warranty?
If they won't any idea what sort of cost they will sting me for repair?
Anyone else seen this and if so is this something I could repair myself if ASUS won't? There are ports available online: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Asus-TF...Power-Original-Replacement-Part-/380574369170
Is it possible the port has just become loose inside and so is not connecting properly? If so how easy is it to take the pad apart without damaging it?
What might be the cause of the pad refusing to boot up?

ASUS europe (*) has stated that they will repair under warranty for hardware problems even after unlock, only software problems arent covered by warranty anymore.
but damages by falls arent covered by any warranty afaik, maybe if you dont tell them what's happened they'll fall for it but I dont konw.
(*) other countries have different consumer protection laws, I dont have any data.

Thanks for the reply. It's worse than I thought. I managed to keep it running long enough to backup some stuff yesterday and then it shut down again, dead, unable to reboot. I eased the back cover off and unfortunately the large copper heatsink from the processor had become dislodged in the fall breaking the warranty sticker in the process. It had ended up seated across the PCB. I suspect 2 things have probably happened, overheating of the processor and that there may well have been a short due to the heat sink being out of position.
There is no way I will convince anyone that the sticker broke and the heat sink became dislodged without trauma, so I am looking at a paid repair. Sounds like that may be expensive, so I may have to just bite the bullet and claim on my house insurance accidental damage policy. There's a £150 excess but it's better than losing a £400 tablet and I can probably buy without the dock and save a bit of cash with the insurance money.

Dropped HTC One X In Bath!

Hi,
My son got a hold of my HTC One X and decided to throw it into the bath. Basically the screen was black and the only sign of power was the BACK and HOME light where lit, but not the RECENT.
I took it apart and let it dry the best I could but unfortunately I ripped one of the ribbons near the top of the mobile.
I have attached photos.
1) Is my phone completely screwed or is there a way I can fix this?
2) The ribbon I ripped can it be easily replaced?
3) The lights from the pictures appear instantly when I plug in the battery and stay on sometimes flickering now and again. The back of the phone also becomes extremely warm.
All help is greatly appreciated and I hope I can fix this phone as I still have 12 months contract on it
Thanks.
It's hard to tell what ribbon cable you ripped from that picture. I'll check my One X at home to see what cable that is when I get home but realistically, you'll have to replace the part to the ribbon cable that you tore as you can't just mend those cables. And there's a really high chance you'll need to replace that motherboard from water damage. It's probably cheaper to buy a new phone.

Its just because there was power with the lights I thought there might be hope.
The fact the back part is getting extremely hot when the battery is connected could that be a faulty battery?
If worst case scenario is the phone is broke how much should I sell it on for parts?

If it's been submerged like that even the parts probably have very little value....
If it happened in your house maybe your home insurance could cover it? might be worth checking the policy.

Sorry to say but it's not worth fixing or selling. I'd look into that insurance if you've got a home insurance policy.
That cable appears to go to the screen so you'd be looking at replacing the entire unit if you were to try and fix it.
I was looking around for parts last night and I found this:
http://www.etradesupply.com/htc/android-models/htc-one-x.html
Would it be one of the top 4 items I would need?
The best I have it just now is when I plug just the motherboard into the battery it sits with the 2 out of 3 lights on.
I still have 12 months on the contract and the phone is worth around £400 so I don't mind spending up to £100 to fix it.
Also, I tried plugging just the motherboard into my usb port on my laptop but the phone won't detect, the motherboard heats up but nothing shows on the computer.
Is there anyway I can retrieve the photos/videos from it?

It would cost you over £200 to fix it. Would be cheaper to buy a nexus 4. Or a used phone if you're into that.
That motherboard is dead. It would cost hundreds of £ again to retrieve the data on there you'd have to get a data recovery specialist. Their fee can range from hundreds to thousands depending on how difficult it is to retrieve the data.

Ok thanks for your help.
I will put it on Ebay as I seen some selling for parts etc.. try and get something for it, then just pick up a cheap phone to see out my days of this contract.
I seen a lot of good reviews on a product called "Reviveaphone" which is a bag of solution that clears the minerals causing harm to the motherboard etc.
Does anyone know if they are legit products or had any success with them?

This is directly quoted from their website. I think that maybe if you hadn't turned your phone on, your chances would be a lot higher. At least according to them.
WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOUR PHONE IS WET!
Do NOT turn your phone on at any time
Do NOT put it on the radiator
Do NOT attempt to charge your phone
Do NOT dry with a hair dryer

I took the phone apart and dryed it completely before I tried turning it back on.
Also, bit off topic but do you know if you unlock a phone during its contract does it effect terms and conditions?
The cable you tore goes to the digitizer. Unfortunately, you would have to replace both the lcd and digitizer which are fused together.
I would suggest ordering 99% isopropyl alcohol and either cleaning the motherboard using alcohol and toothbrush, or soaking the motherboard in the alcohol. Of course, it might already be completely fried.

N5 repair in shop

I left my Nexus 5 in for repair a week ago to a local phone shop, it had the faulty power button problem which was causing a bootloop.
Fast forward, they tried replacing the button with another but said the new button did not work,
They now say that its likely the motherboard and have ordered one for the phone ?
Does this sound like a genuine explanation or have they possibly damaged the motherboard by a botched job at soldering ?
Cheers
I would suggest getting it back and doing a visual inspection because a new motherboard is expensive.
9 days later , I Phone the repair shop today and they said my phone cannot be fixed , worse still they don't have it but its "on the way" from a courier someplace.
Very poor service that they took it in the first place saying "no problem , we can fix that in a few hours"
The phone was still working when i left it in but now im afraid when it comes that it will be totally unusable , my suspicion is that they may have messed up the soldering.
The guy has apologized over the phone but said i need a new phone and offered me another phone (they dont carry nexus) at a discount. but I'm still fuming.
Not sure what to do.
Not sure if they did screw it up or whether there is a problem in addition to the power button.
You may as well wait until you get the phone back Definitely check the imei if possible to make sure the company returns the correct phone. Examine it closely for any other potential damage/changes from the original.

Thanks for that, any particular things i should look for ? Im thinking of taking it into another place for a second opinion, the phone was working intermittently before i left it in , meaning i was getting a few days of good use than maybe an hour or 2 of constant rebooting that was definitely the power button .
Also do you think i should ask for any compensation from the company ? its hard to know.
I would definitely look for stray solder, damaged ribbon cables, damaged motherboard connectors, and broken clips. If the repair shop did something to brick it, there may be no signs of physical damage.
Rather than send it out again, you could look for a used N5 with a smashed screen and working motherboard. This way, you could just swap out the motherboards and you'll have a few spare internal parts.

Thanks again, I had a look online at the teardown video and it seems fairly straightforward to swap out parts (i previously had changed the battery myself) .
I just don't understand why they could not fix it, especially when he said they will put a new motherboard in it. surely that would have sorted it . just dosent make sense, perhaps they just cant be bothered ordering a new part.
A new motherboard? That should completely solve any problems since nothing on the motherboard can be replaced by a cell shop, even lg, unless the shop damaged something on the lcd.
Yes he mentioned changing the motherboard for a new one, you dont think even the power button can be replaced on it ?
Sorry about my confusing post.
Yes, the button can be replaced, but that is about it. There are only three solder points for the power button I believe. The wifi chip, emmc, and sim reader cannot be replaced.
Hopefully, it will not cost too much for the replacement motherboard.

Galaxy s6 won't charge?

Today I noticed that galaxy s6 won't charge anymore. Tried different cables and chargers.
If I move charger cable a bit it, 'charging logo goes on' and nothing else. Also somehow I managed to turn on the device but it showed 0% and after couple sec it went off.
What could be the problem? Charging port or battery ?
Regards
Its been happening to as well.. but because I wet it once...

Have you ever dropped it in water ?
Mine did this a few weeks ago until I blew into the charge port and then it was fine. It didn't really look that dirty so I was surprised it worked.
If you already replace the cables it must have something in the USB port on your phone, try cleaning with a thin pin, it helped me more than once.
Thanks guys for your replies. I took the device to the warranty service in one of the European countries, they checked and refused to fix. They said that there is a corrosion inside the charging port. As it is my brothers' phone I cannot confirm if the phone was wet or something. He just said that he tend to use his phone when it was raining outside. The best part was when I went to the service she plugged in with her charger and phone started to charge, but I still agreed to check the phone. Now I got refused warranty and not sure what to do next.

Think you've got 2 options here, if you are capable of taking apart the phone you can see the level of corrosion and see if you can clean things up or take it to a 3rd party and get the charging port replaced.

I had some experience when I was changing some parts for LG G4 and galaxy s4. Hopefully it's similar.
Do you think that I should replace that port? as it's charging now.

I think for the time being see how it goes, maybe what happened is when the charger was inserted at centre it may have worn away some of the corrosion on the pins when the contacts rubbed against each other, but long term id look at getting it replaced.

That's really good point. I know that for the car you can use spray against corrosion and the corrosion goes away. Would that be something that can be used for the phone and some stick to clean it ?

You have to becareful with anything that's liquid based, as it could possibly cause a short so becareful with that.
The lg and s4 would have been a lot easier to work on. I've had a few lg phones apart since they always break on me and their one upside is that they were very easy to fix.

Erratic wireless charging and swollen battery

This issue is related to the battery, but not the connector issue others are having. About 3 weeks ago I started experiencing erratic wireless charging. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would just stop for no reason, or not even start charging at all when I put it on the stand discharged. Then wireless charging just completely stopped working. Cord charging always worked fine. After testing different cords and wireless chargers I determined it was the phone. I only take the case off for cleaning, but while testing the phone "bare" on the different chargers I noticed the phone was swollen and the back glass had separated from the frame. So the battery has swollen significantly, pretty much in the middle of the phone. The highest bulge is around the volume-down button. See attached photo. I'm within the one year warranty and purchased at the Google store so after an hour on the phone and several photos sent, they are cross shipping a replacement to me. They say they put a hold on my CC, but it does not appear on my statement online? Express 3-day shipping was included free. I dusted off the old P3XL, updated it to 11 and then restored my latest Google P4XL backup to it. Not real happy with getting a refurb, but what can ya do?
Oh wow. Glad they are replacing it.
As for the hold, some cc companies don't show it active on a statement. Did you verify that your available credit limit dropped?

When you send your phone in make sure there is no way to have it get more damaged and take pictures the warranty people had me pay for a new phone.
Do you have a magnetic plate on the back of your phone or case? When wireless charging the plate can heat up and cause battery damage mine never swelled but it did eventually stop charging all together. Then google warranty claim told me the phone was too damaged for repair that I had to pay $350 for a new one. Sucks so close the 5 coming out.
I was thinking I should of asked for the phone back for further inspection but I figured there going to return it more damaged and I didn't take pictures before I sent it.

Sounds like maybe you had the other battery problem with the connector. Your point about taking pictures is a good one, especially when trading in one Google phone for another.
No, I haven't used the metal plate with this phone. I changed car mounts to the clamp type starting on the P3XL. Maybe Google has changed protocols recently, but during the long discussion they had me take many pictures of the phone including front and rear glass, camera, etc. to prove there was no damage. Then they wanted close-ups of the back glass separation before "elevating" my case to the next tier.
