Erratic wireless charging and swollen battery - Google Pixel 4 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

This issue is related to the battery, but not the connector issue others are having. About 3 weeks ago I started experiencing erratic wireless charging. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would just stop for no reason, or not even start charging at all when I put it on the stand discharged. Then wireless charging just completely stopped working. Cord charging always worked fine. After testing different cords and wireless chargers I determined it was the phone. I only take the case off for cleaning, but while testing the phone "bare" on the different chargers I noticed the phone was swollen and the back glass had separated from the frame. So the battery has swollen significantly, pretty much in the middle of the phone. The highest bulge is around the volume-down button. See attached photo. I'm within the one year warranty and purchased at the Google store so after an hour on the phone and several photos sent, they are cross shipping a replacement to me. They say they put a hold on my CC, but it does not appear on my statement online? Express 3-day shipping was included free. I dusted off the old P3XL, updated it to 11 and then restored my latest Google P4XL backup to it. Not real happy with getting a refurb, but what can ya do?

Oh wow. Glad they are replacing it.
As for the hold, some cc companies don't show it active on a statement. Did you verify that your available credit limit dropped?

When you send your phone in make sure there is no way to have it get more damaged and take pictures the warranty people had me pay for a new phone.
Do you have a magnetic plate on the back of your phone or case? When wireless charging the plate can heat up and cause battery damage mine never swelled but it did eventually stop charging all together. Then google warranty claim told me the phone was too damaged for repair that I had to pay $350 for a new one. Sucks so close the 5 coming out.
I was thinking I should of asked for the phone back for further inspection but I figured there going to return it more damaged and I didn't take pictures before I sent it.

Sounds like maybe you had the other battery problem with the connector. Your point about taking pictures is a good one, especially when trading in one Google phone for another.
No, I haven't used the metal plate with this phone. I changed car mounts to the clamp type starting on the P3XL. Maybe Google has changed protocols recently, but during the long discussion they had me take many pictures of the phone including front and rear glass, camera, etc. to prove there was no damage. Then they wanted close-ups of the back glass separation before "elevating" my case to the next tier.

Replacement Battery

I accidentally dropped the battery of my optimus one in water when I was forced to take the battery out in order to restart the phone. Now whenever I plug in the charger, it won't charge at all, and battery indicator pro says that the battery's status is 'overheat'.
Has anyone bought a replacement battery from ebay, or know a place where I can get one? I was originally gonna try to claim warranty but it appears that there is a a white sticker of some sort on the battery which can detect if it has come in contact with water. At the bottom of the battery, where the connectors are, can you guys see if you have a small white rectangular sticker or paper? Mine is coloured red and I do not remember if it was like that originally XD

Thanks I'll look into that.
Can someone please check if they have a water detection sticker on their battery? Or if they have had a similar problem previously and tried to claim warranty?
yes there is and mine is white
ah damn, I wonder if I can try to claim it off warranty... although I've read stuff on other forums where they refused to service it or made the user pay for the fixes due to them having a red sticker.
wait a couple of days ..the battery should have nothing unwrappit of that "lg" sticker and leave it on your 1. radiator
2. stove
3. calorifier
pick your choice
...seriously my cusin dropped his nokia 6303 in the lake and it got it out and leave it a couple of days ...and it worked...i dont think the battery cells were damaged ...how long it was in the water?
It was less than 5 seconds... but the entire battery was fully submerged and enough for the white sticker to turn pink. I bought the phone on the 1st of feb, so if the entire lg sticker is gone after 2 weeks, wouldn't they think its rather suspicious? lol
I looked up the model of the battery, LGIP-400N and bought 2 on ebay. I know they won't be as good as the original but at least it'll charge... even if I have to charge it every night ><;;
but please follow my advice ok? remove the cover sticker let it be "basic" then put it to dry and wait a day ..and try again...see the contacts if they are ok and so on
try this too . Rice helps adsorb the water. so put it in rice for 2 days and see what happens
and try the thingy with the minerals..it dose make sense http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-zDlzfAFWI
i'm charging mine every night because of heavy use )

haha, I tried the rice trick but probably didn't do it for long enough... I'll just hold out on the current charge until I get the new batteries, don't think I wanna put my battery on radiator or stove etc... XD
well try the things i wrote
Heat damages Li-Ion batteries, so placing it on something hot or even warm is not recommended. What you may try is to blow warm air over it with a hair drier. Unpacking it might help, but then it may not fit perfectly inside the phone, start moving around and disconnect. Either way, the battery's warranty is void now that the sticker is red (indeed that's what it does, marks a battery that made contact with liquids or moisture) so you may try anything before discarding it. Yet, getting the water out could, in theory, make it work again just like before.
could there be any damages to the phone by using a battery in such a condition? I need something to hold out till my new batteries get here... and I dont want to damage the phone before they do ><;
What is the price of 18000 battery ... my kid plays a lot with phone. He is still playing with it.
He dropped it so many times and the screen is bit damaged. I went to service cneter and asked for the replacement. They said it will cost me around 1670 INR.
Battery might not be that expensive I think ...
Let me know the price you paid for the new battery.
I've ordered them from ebay here. I'll post the quality/usage when I get it and perform tests.
1800mAh: Personally, I find that the price isn't justifiable considering the difference from stock is only 300mah, there are also a few comments about mugen batteries from this thread.
I think you can purchase the original from LG's parts department, it'll obviously be more costly than the generic batteries you find on eBay.
Sent from my VM670 using XDA App
I tried looking for them on the lg website but I couldn't find anything about them online. Any chance you can link me to the page that has them? I wouldn't mind paying more to get a genuine battery since I'm pretty sure a generic battery voids the warranty.
One should never play with Li-Ion or LiPo batteries they explode most of the time. I have a rc helicopter which has both in it one for radio and one for the motor and esc. It exploded when i try to puncture and release some gases inside one of the bloated battery.

[Q] Tablet DOA

A few days ago, I shipped my TF300 to the user who bought the unit off me through ebay. Today, upon its arrival at its destination, I received a message from the buyer telling me the unit is dead.
Before I shipped the unit, I used the factory reset function to erase my data, and upon the tablet rebooting to the welcome screen, I powered it off. As far as I am aware, the unit worked perfectly fine up to the moment that I packed it in its box and sent it away. The buyer reports no visible damage to the box or the unit itself, so I doubt that the unit was damaged in transit.
According to the buyer, the dock I shipped with it works and charges fine, and was tested on an acquaintance's tablet, both with the charger I provided as well as said acquaintance's. However, regardless of which cable and charger was used, and whether the tablet was plugged in solo or through the dock, the tablet seems to not want to charge. No charge indicator light on the power button, no apparent change in status.
My question is mainly this: is it possible that the battery or tablet as a whole had an adverse reaction to the cold temperatures during shipping (I live in Toronto, the recipient lives in Ottawa)?
If so, and even if not, what can I do, or tell the buyer to do in order to rectify the situation? All the guides here, as well as other sites say to charge longer or say to do the 'hold the power button fox X seconds' dance until something happens, but if those don't work, what do I do?

Never heard that inside temperatures would do anything to the tab. It was fully charged when you mailed it, correct? Even if it gets drained somehow, it can always get the juice from the dock/keyboard. It's possible for the battery connector to come loose. However, for such thing to happen requires quite a shock which, under normal circumstances, would not fail on this model to shatter either the digitizer or lcd, or both.
Have you ever opened the tab? If yes, do you have a way of telling if anything has been tampered with? There's a warranty seal inside. If it's broken, someone has done something to it. If it's not, you can always resort to warranty. I doubt it's a software issue where the unit doesn't react at all to charging.
The power/volume assembly is separate from the mainboard, and connected thereto by means of a white cable. It consists of two brittle amber cables that tear easily. Additionally, If the mainboard crashed, no amount of holding will help. Lastly, if the tab has been opened, and the back cover has not been reassembled properly, the power button mounted on it will fail to switch the unit on. Correctly assembled will make the button click when you gently push on it. It's fragile too, so if you do it wrong and force it, you might break it. The charging light is conducted through a plastic reflector glued onto the power button. If you put it in the wrong way, you won't see the charging indicator.
In other words, there's no substitute for getting the unit back and do the inspection yourself, unless the buyer is somehow tech savvy. Sorry to hear.

First off, thank you for your detailed response.
In terms of the battery levels before shipping, it was at roughly 30%, if I recall correctly. I assumed that even with a full charge, the unit would likely be drained, or close to drained, after the trip and did not make an effort to charge it beforehand.
In terms of opening the unit, I never attempted it. As far as I was aware, the tablet was in completely functional condition inside and out, and in the six or so months that I had it I never encountered any hardware or software faults.
I forgot to mention in the OP that I no longer had all of the original packaging, and shipped the tablet connected to the dock, packed in with two soft tablet sleeves. The tablet/dock combo was slightly too large for the tablet box, so I had to put it in at an angle, with a soft sleeve filling the empty space above and below the tablet within the box to secure it (I made sure it was stable before I even left for the post office). The original box was the placed into a marginally larger box, with the cable, charger head, and a stylus placed into the empty space that was left after the tablet box was inside. I assumed, maybe mistakenly, that it would be able to survive the trip like that.
If something happened to the connector on the tablet, is there any way to fix it?

IMO, only excessive brute force would damage the battery connector. If it is, resoldering the thing is a pain, not to mention the impossibility of getting a new one. But you don't want to get into that part just yet as it involves breaking the seal. You want to get the unit back for inspection first. If the seal is broken, there's a chance the motherboard has been worked on. If it's not, then send it to Asus while you can. A bad motherboard will cost you more than you think. I don't want to implicate foul play, but it's not like it has never happened before.

After considering what you mentioned in your previous post, I was starting to think that there may have been some poor handling on the buyer's behalf, and if not him, then definitely Canada Post. I am absolutely use I did nothing to damage the tablet before I shipped it, and made sure to pack it in a way that would ensure a safe transit from my residence to the buyer's residence.
I think I am going to ask for pictures of the tablet connector to see if there is any obvious damage. These tablets, while still fragile, are not made of tissue paper, so if there was damage on part of the seller, I should be able to see it.
Also, how would one go about checking if the seal on the tablet had been broken?

I wouldn't trust the buyer to do anything at this point. Then again, it's your call. Go to this THREAD for reference. In order to see the seal, you have to remove the back cover. If you don't know what you're doing, you might scratch or even crack the digitizer. If the buyer is committed to buying the piece, s/he wouldn't shy away from the transferable warranty, no matter who claims it.

Dropped HTC One X In Bath!

Hi,
My son got a hold of my HTC One X and decided to throw it into the bath. Basically the screen was black and the only sign of power was the BACK and HOME light where lit, but not the RECENT.
I took it apart and let it dry the best I could but unfortunately I ripped one of the ribbons near the top of the mobile.
I have attached photos.
1) Is my phone completely screwed or is there a way I can fix this?
2) The ribbon I ripped can it be easily replaced?
3) The lights from the pictures appear instantly when I plug in the battery and stay on sometimes flickering now and again. The back of the phone also becomes extremely warm.
All help is greatly appreciated and I hope I can fix this phone as I still have 12 months contract on it
Thanks.
It's hard to tell what ribbon cable you ripped from that picture. I'll check my One X at home to see what cable that is when I get home but realistically, you'll have to replace the part to the ribbon cable that you tore as you can't just mend those cables. And there's a really high chance you'll need to replace that motherboard from water damage. It's probably cheaper to buy a new phone.

Its just because there was power with the lights I thought there might be hope.
The fact the back part is getting extremely hot when the battery is connected could that be a faulty battery?
If worst case scenario is the phone is broke how much should I sell it on for parts?

If it's been submerged like that even the parts probably have very little value....
If it happened in your house maybe your home insurance could cover it? might be worth checking the policy.

Sorry to say but it's not worth fixing or selling. I'd look into that insurance if you've got a home insurance policy.
That cable appears to go to the screen so you'd be looking at replacing the entire unit if you were to try and fix it.
I was looking around for parts last night and I found this:
http://www.etradesupply.com/htc/android-models/htc-one-x.html
Would it be one of the top 4 items I would need?
The best I have it just now is when I plug just the motherboard into the battery it sits with the 2 out of 3 lights on.
I still have 12 months on the contract and the phone is worth around £400 so I don't mind spending up to £100 to fix it.
Also, I tried plugging just the motherboard into my usb port on my laptop but the phone won't detect, the motherboard heats up but nothing shows on the computer.
Is there anyway I can retrieve the photos/videos from it?

It would cost you over £200 to fix it. Would be cheaper to buy a nexus 4. Or a used phone if you're into that.
That motherboard is dead. It would cost hundreds of £ again to retrieve the data on there you'd have to get a data recovery specialist. Their fee can range from hundreds to thousands depending on how difficult it is to retrieve the data.

Ok thanks for your help.
I will put it on Ebay as I seen some selling for parts etc.. try and get something for it, then just pick up a cheap phone to see out my days of this contract.
I seen a lot of good reviews on a product called "Reviveaphone" which is a bag of solution that clears the minerals causing harm to the motherboard etc.
Does anyone know if they are legit products or had any success with them?

This is directly quoted from their website. I think that maybe if you hadn't turned your phone on, your chances would be a lot higher. At least according to them.
WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOUR PHONE IS WET!
Do NOT turn your phone on at any time
Do NOT put it on the radiator
Do NOT attempt to charge your phone
Do NOT dry with a hair dryer

I took the phone apart and dryed it completely before I tried turning it back on.
Also, bit off topic but do you know if you unlock a phone during its contract does it effect terms and conditions?
The cable you tore goes to the digitizer. Unfortunately, you would have to replace both the lcd and digitizer which are fused together.
I would suggest ordering 99% isopropyl alcohol and either cleaning the motherboard using alcohol and toothbrush, or soaking the motherboard in the alcohol. Of course, it might already be completely fried.

Spare Charger With Assurion Replacement Phone from Sprint.

I got the Essential phone from Sprint basically the first day it was available from them, in September of last year, and I have liked the phone very much. However, within a month and a half of purchasing it, I dropped it on the sidewalk in NYC and got a very bad series of cracks in it. I am paying for insurance from Sprint, but even with the insurance, I was told it would cost me $200 to fix, basically because they could not replace the screen, they were going to give me a new phone. At the time, I was a little tight with cash and did not want to spend that, so I decided to live with the issue, which at that time was mostly just visible cracking on the screen. However, in the month's since then, the screen got worse, it started reacting erractically to my touch, and black smears started appearing on the screen. Finally, last Saturday, the phone went blooey, to use a technical term, the screen abruptly became almost totally unresponsive; I could not reliably open apps by clicking on the icon on the screen, and the phone often acted as if I was pressing other apps when I was not even touching the screen at all--it even turned on the flashlight by itself several times.
So at this point, I had no choice but to bite the bullet and finally pay to get the phone replaced. Of course, at this point the cost had gone up by about $50, but what do you expect. I no longer trust Essential's word that I don't need a case or screen protector, so I have gotten an Incipio case and a Skinomi screen protector. I have had the phone for 2 days and the case/screen for 1, and so far, so good, but obviously it is a little early in the game.
However, I have one issue, when I was in touch with Assurion, the Sprint insurance company, about getting the replacement, I was happy when they told me I would be shipped a charger with the replacement phone. I still have the one the original phone came with, and it works fine, but it's always nice to have a backup. However, the charger they sent is not the same kind as came with the phone. That was a USB-C to USB-C charger, whereas the one that came with the replacement phone is a standard USB to USB-C charger, the company name is Griffin on the charger, and it does not work very well at all. I have left the new phone connected to it for hours, and it pretty much stays status quo; the power doesn't go down, but it doesn't go up either. The original charger works fine with the phone, so the problem is not the phone itself.
Has anyone else there had this issue? Were you able to resolve it?

What are the current outputs for the charger? It is most likely a QuickCharge block and the PH-1 does not support quick charge. It won't negotiate properly and because of that sometimes you'll plug it in and it'll charge pretty fast, other times it might actually start slowly dying. You need a USB PD (power delivery) charger. Also saying you no longer trust Essentials word because YOU dropped the phone isn't fair. Plenty of others have dropped it without issue. It really does suck that you happened to damage your device, but bashing the company because they didn't make an indestructible device is a bit harsh. Not trying to be a ****, just saying.

The dreaded battery gate on my Pixel 4 XL

I bought my Pixel 4 XL when it first released and pre-ordered,. I soon after got my phone and everything was lovely I had a screen protector ready for it and a good case to protect it from any falls or any damaged. I've had the phone since the phone released and now my phone is refusing to hold a charge.. It seems to be stuck at 50% but dies as soon as I take it off the charger. At one point I was able to make it actually charged the battery from 0 to 100 if I squeezed the bottom G portion of the back of the phone. That seems to have stopped working now.. now my phone even on the charger is literally at 0%, and the only thing keeping it alive is a charger itself. As soon as I take it off it will turn off randomly but when I plug it into the charger in powered off , it will show a battery with a ? Within it. My phone is under the one year manufacturers warranty and Google advise me that I could take it into uBreakiFix to get it fixed.. mind you, the place is almost 60 miles away from me. I have never dropped my phone it's been in a case and the screen is a virgin screen because I've had a screen protector on it since the moment I opened the box..
This kind of reminds me of the Nexus 6P shutting off at 30 to 40% because of a faulty battery..
I've googled around for solutions and apparently this is a known issue in Google tracker and apparently it is a hardware issue with a flex cable that comes out of the battery... Not only does the battery have a negative and a positive terminal it also has a data terminal that reports battery health battery temperature battery voltage and anything having to do with the battery. Well apparently the soldering in that part of the cable is faulty and cracks according to them due to dropping the phone or damaging it but again mind you I've never dropped my phone it's been in the case since day one..
I've taken really good care of my device like I'm pretty sure a lot of you have...
I have a feeling that before the Pixel 5 is out many people will be experiencing these problems because this is not a software problem this is a manufacturing problem within the phone itself.
again I took a really good care of my phone this was not supposed to happen so expect it to happen in yours even though you've taken good care of it.

I would push for in advanced RMA. Be civil and respectful but also set boundaries, like the fact that a 60 mi trip is absolutely insane for a product that is under warranty and is experiencing a manufacturing defect. If you're getting nowhere with the current rep, ask to escalate the case to a manager and proceed to plead your case. They should do it, I don't see why they wouldn't under your scenario as you tell it. Good luck.
I've had my Oh So Orange Pixel 4 XL since probably the same time as yours and no battery charge and usage issues here. You're within the one year warranty so I would go for a replacement.

I've had this problem. I took it to ubreakifix to have it repaired. No problems since.
The service I received at ubreakifix was subpart today the least.
Google will also let you send the phone in for repair. You would just have to wait.
Fyi I had to take my phone in to ubreakifix they didn't have parts, then wait for parts to come in. Then their online tracking said the phone was done and when I came in had to wait an hour for it to actually be repaired.
If they are that far away save yourself a headache and just send it in to Google.

I had replaced my Nexus 5X twice with Google and both times they send you a phone and THEN you send back the old one. The only wait time was receiving the working phone which was no more than 2 days.

Here is what happens. See the picture of the Pixel I just had fixed. And why pressing on the G on the back glass helps.
Look at the new battery on the ground under the phone. Notice the gold connector. Then look at the used battery in the air. The connector comes off the battery.
In my case, the connector was stuck in the board, and the main board needed replacing. Thankfully google approved it.
I honestly feel like that with time this will start beginning to happen on a lot of pixel 4 xls

I think that only works if you bought directly from Google or Fi. 3rd party, i.e. Verizon, BB purchases do not have advance replacement. You can't even put a credit card hold on a device to get AR if you didn't buy it from them.

You could be right. My last 3 Google phones were all through Google Store so wouldn't know how replacements are through retail stores.

WeBreakUpay sucks. They changed a battery in my 2XL and the camera stopped working a few days later. They said it wasn't their fault. They charged me for it. So I bought a 4XL and vowed never to set foot in there. Send it back to Google. Hopefully you have a backup.
