I agree. They have stopped development on both the Xperia Home and Xperia Weather apps with only maintenance updates and now themes are discontinued on new devices. Sony had a nice balance of stock and skinned android experience but now it's leaning towards more of a stock experience. I hope something is coming in the pipeline development wise that differentiates them from the competitors. I have been a Sony/Sony Ericsson user for twelve years and in that time we've lost many original Sony experiences.

[Q] Xperia S vs. Xperia ion, help needed

Hi all
I was thinking about getting a Samsung Galaxy S II(the i9100 variant) but I found about the new Xperia S and the Xperia ion.
I've set my mind to the Xperia ion but I couldn't find an official release date for it(I've seen 30 March in some places but I don't think thats gonna happen)
Unless Samsung announces the Galaxy S 3 (or whatever its gonna be called) I'll be getting one of the Xperias. The differences between the S and the ion are not so big, so my question is, should i wait for the ion to come out or should I just get the S.
Any opinion will be appreciated.
BTW I'm currently in the US, so i need a North American release date/links etc.
Ion released is due to Q2.The Xperia S isn't already on official stores yet (I think, such as Amazon, Best Buy, Sony Style, etc). But you can get it on eBay.
Personally, I am not from US, so... But I like S more, due the screen size fit my small hands and the design, in my opinion is way more beautiful. But, in the end, it's up to you.

My Dad has and Xperia S and I know a few people with a SGSII, In my opinion the Xperia S is Just as quick if not faster, and has a great screen and camera... Just wait until the ROMS are released and It'll fly.

It's good to hear from people who actually used the phone, I was going to place an order for the Xperia S, i just didn't want to regret that after ion comes out. And if its as quick as the S II, its good for me. I'll probably go with the Xperia S if they don't announce an exact release date for the ion soon.

Good choise choosing Xperia S over GSII. I am an Xperia fan and currently using Arc S and it's really fast especially with customs ROMs and tweaks, I am waiting for the release of Ion to buy it. it's simply beautifull and stylish. Xperia UIs are great.

[Q] Sony vs HTC

Hey
I am looking to get either the sony xperia z2 or the HTC one m8. But the fact that the z2 has just been recently announced and that the the dev community has been up and running yet. I was wondering which one has a better dev community. I have been out of the xda for quite a while that I cant find out which has the best dev community.
Regards
Aman
HTC's are great devices. Charp, elegant and very durable. And as for Xperia devices, they're very premium look sharp and offer great durability.
For development, I've noticed the Xperia has been getting lots of support. I also have a feeling it'll keep getting ota updates when Sony prepares them, since it is a recently released device.
The HTC M8 is great, the development community is good too. Just take a look at their sub forms to make out the development.
But if you wish to remain stock or have a stock like experience with good features. I would go for HTC since Sense 6 looks amazing. TimeScape UI is Sony's way if making things look right. But it isn't as great as Sense. But if you wish to run original developed ROMs then you must go for the Xperia Z2.
They're both great devices, but its your choice.

Experia Z2 vs. OnePlusOne

Ok so I made this thread just to get feed back and basically advice as to which phone I should get. I currently have an iphone 5s and having it was cool and everything but I def. miss the android side of things (not sure why iphones are so much more popular either honestly) and was thinking on getting the Z2 or the one plus. However I've been told that experia devices are a little tougher to root and flash custom roms on. Also Im not sure as to how much support experia devices would have as far as roms kernels and such. What do you guys think?
I'd go onePlus One. MUCH cheaper, stronger raw specs and CM 11s. Can't go wrong with that.
First of all , It is Xperia not Experia
And you should probably get the Xperia Z2
I am not saying that the Xperia Z2 is better but it is because The OnePlus One is only available through an invite system. This means that only people who received an invitation from one of their friends or from OnePlus will be able to buy the device. After buying the device, you will receive a number of invitations that you can send to friends interested in the OnePlus One.
Plus I think accessories and maintenance for the Xperia Z2 will always be much easier to find. so yup Go for the Xperia Z2.

[Q] Sony's commitment to Smartwatch 2

Hi,
Do we know what is Sony's commitment to the Smartwatch 2? I've heard that now that the Smartwatch 3 is around the corner with Android Wear that Sony would discontinue the development of the current OS for their Smartwatch 2... Any one can comment on this?
Thanks
Sony is not a charity organization - so it would be very wondering if they'd support OS for a much longer time. Maybe Sony could open more apis and more code in order to give independent developers a chance to keep SW2 alive...

Well... I don't think it's charity. They are still actively selling the Smartwatch 2. I would like to assume that they are not selling a product that is already eol.
I've never seen an advertising for SW2... Never seen someone presenting SW2. Sony Support Website Germany just has a section for SW1 not for SW2 - they don't show a single picture of it in support website - just of SW1.... I don't think there's much active selling... They only give smartwatch 2 as present for buying their mobiles.

It is listed as accessory (de:Zubehör).
Crazy... Maybe I've mixed something up. Thanks.
But in general this doesn't change the current fact that they will have to sell SW3 and won't use SW2-like OS in later Watches (approved by Sony Support)... Also there were no updates for extensions or new ones during months. And they tell hard - and software won't be able to solve an extension for example Lifelog or Socialife. Because of this lie you can say, that they aren't interested in keeping os alive in order to push SW3

IMHO if they want independent developers to start creating apps for SW3, they should keep SW2 alive at least as long, as we have earned (on paid apps) enough to buy SW3. I love gadgets, but business is business. They cost a lot, and I can't have birthdays every half a year.
I know what you mean...

I'm still holding out hope they'll launch the real successor to the SW2, that they must have been developing.
I'd love to know what it was, I imagine the hardware was that of the SW3, with much developed SW2 software.

Given the amount of time the Android Wear SDK has actually been in development I'd wager that the "real successor" to the SW2 has always been the SW3 with Android Wear.

I was thinking today that perhaps the large, unexpected SW2 update a few months back was just Sony releasing whatever updates were ready for release, from stuff that was being prepared for a SW2 successor, before all work was stopped and the development direction switched to Android Wear.

I don't think development was stopped spontaneously... They've time tables which tell them when there will be a cutting line.
I've often asked Sony about different updates, fixes and new features... every single question was answered with "sorry, that's not possible for SW2"... so it sound kinda definite, that they aren't interested in going on with SW2.

Looking at the map for Android Wear development, it seems clear that, with the SW2, Sony has already gone where Google intends to go. With the help of a number of great independent devs of course. It is a shame that it is obviously not financially viable or good business sense for Sony to continue updates or support for the SW2. Entirely because it is built on a proprietary OS. Expect to see Sony's commitment evaporate very quickly.
It would be generate some goodwill amongst customers if Sony released any left over SW2 sources or apis or whatever. But if there is any cross over with any SW3 Sony-unique Android Wear development that Sony will use to set themselves apart in the Android Wear market, that will not happen. With all the hardware pretty much the same as reference designs, every company will need to work to set themselves apart on the software front and I expect Sony to acknowledge that.
I intend simply to enjoy my SW2 while it, and Sony support, lasts. When I finally need to replace my SW2, I will go for something with a far better screen than ANY of the current smartwatchs offer. I will also expect an upgrade in function so it would have to be better than the iwatch.

I don't see any big advantages of an iwatch. Ok, hardware is good - but in general it does nothing different to our SW2 or the Wear-Watches. It's also just notification pushing and controlling the phone's behavior like an external remote.
Belonging to storage and cpu, SW2 offers the best solution with proprietary OS. It's battery saving and doesn't need many resources. Wear and iOS watch need too much resources just to keep alive the OS.
Next watch, if SW2 will die some day, would be something else with proprietary OS. Maybe wear watches will get more updates and APIs, ok... but in general newer Apps will follow the provided resources of further watches in future. So a 2014 Wear device won't solve all new Apps and APIs but has to live with less battery life. Therefore I can stay with my SW2 and feel happy not having the need to recharge battery twice a week or three times a week or more (Greetings to Motorola [emoji12])
I'd like to see a Smartwatch acting deeper in android system.

Well they will stop support eventually.
But I am working on making custom firmwares so when that happens we wont be left with no new updates and features.

Biometrics. Perhaps the iwatch wasn't a good example. I was referring to Biometrics, heart beat monitor, fingerprint scanner that sort of stuff.

The SW2 does have a slight advantage on battery life but at the expense of function. And as development is ongoing for both Wear and iwatch, and will shortly stop for SW2, that advantage will not last long.

I don't understand this reference.
Like I said I'm no hurry to replace my SW2, mainly thanks to all the fantastic devs that have sacrificed their time to make so many great SW2 extensions and watchfaces and stuff.

Are There AOSP roms for xperia range available?

Hi
This is more of a general question, but this is as good place as any I guess.
I'm pretty much set on buying the Xperia z6 when it arrives and I'm curious whether there are AOSP roms usually available for The main xperia Z phones. I've heard Sony is pretty good to developers community so I was just wondering.
