Pixel 2 video playback stutter - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hi, I have a problem with my Pixel, I want to know if this is normal or if anyone else has the same problem.
When I play video on this phone (no matter what app) it stutters the first 1 or 2 seconds of the video and then plays normally.
I encounter this problem in every app. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google Photos, Snapchat, etc.
It's no big deal but it becomes specially irritating when viewing Instagram Stories or Facebook short videos, because it stutters and won't play normally and I can't really see what's going on in the video.
It is just a playback issue, because the videos recorded by the Pixel play perfectly on other devices.
I have tried factory image flashing, I've tried Oreo 8.0, 8.1 and even 9.0 Pie and nothing seems to work.
Some time ago I've unlocked the bootloader and flashed custom ROMs and the problem wasn't present on those. But I like this Google ROM more than those.
This is so annoying, I've had like 3 Android phones in my life and they all have had similar problems. I don't want to switch to an iPhone again!
Can somebody help me out?

Just to acknowledge, I have this problem since day one on Oreo, and now on Pie. I thought every device was like this. ****.

I think it's not an issue on XL devices, but I'm starting to believe it's a common issue on normal Pixels
I don't have another Pixel to test. Do you? I would like to know how much of a problem this is.

Never experienced this on my P2XL... Have had the phone since release

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, that's what I said, I don't think this is an issue on XL devices, but I think it is a common one on normal Pixel 2s.
I just noticed this stutter isn't present when media volume is all the way down. So annoying.

[Q] YouTube HD playback problem

Hi guys, i just got my transformer and I love it but I have a little problem, HD videos in youtube app stutters!! t is not a connection problem, on my computer they play perfect, and anyway I let it load it the whole video to avoid connection problems.
The video still stutters, sometimes it plays full framerate, but the second after it is jerky!!
Anyone have the same problem?
Should I return it?
MP4 720p in video player just play fine...
PS: I also noticed i have some LCD backlight bleed problem... awwww man...
If hd flash is important it might not be the best solution.
Could wait and hope for a fix, but the tablet market is moving fast, always a risk companies will move on to the next gen product.
So far Tegra 2 + honeycomb seems not ideal, after all the hype?

Flash is not involved here, I am speaking of the official youtube app which should have no stuttering.
Anyone has the same problem??

Not got that problem. Does it still stutter for you via the browser as well?
Mine used to pause a few times when watching videos in the Youtube app but this appears to have been fixed with the latest firmware update.

Yes it does stutter even in the browser.
I will retry when I return home from work. Thanks.

No yputube app does not use flash, in fact i uninstalled FlashPlayer from tablet to be sure of that.
I have the same issue. Coming from a Xoom I noticed it almost immediately. If there is stock soon, I will go to the store and have it replaced. Otherwise I might just return it. There are things I can deal with, stuttering video is not one of them.
Better to wait for Tegra 3 devices in August ?
http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/...e-tegra-3-chip-in-tablets-by-august-20110216/
Or 4 more months after that, until 2012 and get something better! or keep waiting until 2014 and get the best one in their roadmap!

Actually once it can do 1080p high profile, I could care less what is coming out since it would be the complete package. A Tegra 3 device seems like it could be the one. Definitely selling my Transformer and getting a Tegra 3 tablet when it comes out.
I think the problem is related to the youtube app, i had a trip to a local store with an Iconia A500 and played with it a bit. It had the same problem, i doubt a replacement would do the trick. i suppose an OTA update with a revised version of the youtube app or some tweak should be enough.

If thats the case then I don't mind at all, but it's something that I'd like to know *officially*. It's not something that has to be fixed immediately, but I'd like to know that the issue lies with the app and not my hardware.
Edit: But, at the same time, I didn't think many other people were having the same issue.. ?
stuttering playback was an initially known issue with honeycomb. Like someone else mentioned though, the firmware seemed to resolve that issue. Might want to make sure you have the latest and greatest version.

ya mines the US version of the 20110423.. first thing I checked.
It just crummy because my buddy loved my Xoom, especially the Youtube app (hes got a relatively large presence on youtube) and when he went to watch one of his videos (G20 Battle of Toronto) it was stuttering. It's like it will be smooth for a few seconds then get choppy . The audio never skips a beat though.
Just noticed a flash update on the market. Don't know if it'll help you or not. Looks like its now out of beta or something. I didnt really read it all before i installed it. Version 10.2.156.12.
Edit: Bah the irony. Now I'm getting the stuttery video. I wasnt before.

I know i read somewhere that asus was working with google on it. Maybe they still havent completely ironed it out yet. Remember, its still early for honeycomb...

Nexus 5 stutters and has audio distortion when using only YouTube

I'm on my third Nexus 5 that has had issues, and every single one of them have had this one. When using YouTube the video is jerky and stutters, and randomly there will be audio distortion and pops from the speaker. This is the third Nexus 5 I've had with this issue, and nothing I find can fix it. I can barely find any info on the internet about it.
From what I can tell it is limited to YouTube. The thing is, my old S2 on 4.1.2 had no such issue. None of my other electronics have any issues with YouTube to the degree this does. I'm past believing it is an issue with my phone(though it might be), because as I said, I'm on my third Nexus 5 with this issue.
Has anyone else had this issue? What are my options in trying to fix it? I've had such a bad experience with the Nexus line I'm close to giving up and buying a different phone. This is driving me crazy.
I hope someone can help. Thanks.

App is up to date, and my internet speed is at least 10mbps. I have 30 at home and have the same issues. It does this at home, here at work, and on 4G. But it couldn't be the internet connection as it works fine on my old phone and other devices.
Here's some more info.
Stock, unrooted, stock kernel, 4.2.2. I've been tempted to root and unlock the boot loader to install a new kernel and see if that helps, but I'm not used to rooting Nexus devices and don't want to make it difficult to upgrade to 4.4.3 when its released. Hopefully that will fix this issue, but Google has been radio silent on it so I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

I assume by 4.2.2 you meant 4.4.2
Try clearing data and cache on the YouTube app, if that doesn't help try uninstalling/uninstalling updates and reinstalling/reupdating.

Exactly. It's why I've ruled it out being a hardware issue, because this has happened to two other Nexus 5's I've been in possession of. It's so weird.
I've unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, all the fun stuff. I'm gonna try a new kernel to see if that will fix it.

Hiya,
Im having this issue as well. Some of the videos have disortion and stutters, but its not in youtube app. When I play videos form the websites it happens but, not in all of them. Dont know why some are ok and others dont. Sometimes its really annoying, especially when it stutters a lot in the playedback video. I do not know if its a hardware or a software issue.
EDIT:
Just checked the same video in Android Authority app and in Youtube app. In the first app audio stutters and being a wee bit choppy, in Yt however, everything is fine. Audio is clear, no stutters at all. So I assume its software issue and maybe audio codecs dont play well with third party apps. Also, I dont think there is a solution to this problem.

I am getting very stuttery/laggy/crackly audio over wired headphones and speaker on O

Hello! I never had a problem with my Google Pixel until now.
I downloaded and installed the official Android 8.0 update for my Pixel. As soon as it booted, I did what I normally do and I opened up my audiobooks player to play my 4 hour long MP3 that I listen to. I noticed immediately that the audio was stuttering and crackling, like the way a very old PC would do when you had too many things running while you tried to listen to music.
It is not a bluetooth issue because it happens with wired headphones and even with the internal speaker. It does it whether or not my phone is rooted (does not make a difference). I do not have a lot of apps installed. Again, this did not happen at all on Android N.
The issue is not just with my audio book player app. While it does not happen in Youtube, it also happens if I try to play a video in a web browser. The same horrible audio lagging/stuttering.
I did not see anyone complain about this, so I am at a loss for what it could possibly be. Anyone with any pointers I would greatly appreciate them! It is driving me crazy!
It happens to me too, I have to clear all apps from the background and reboot. Then the audio go back to normal.

It goes back to normal for me after a reboot but it comes right back after not too much time. Why did Google officially release Oreo with this kind of issue?

Has anyone found a fix?
It is some sort of weird RAM issue. I downloaded a RAM cleaner, and even though I have lots of free RAM, cleaning the RAM fixes it (until it eventually comes back). What is going on?

How did you "hear it's a hardware issue" but never heard of anyone else having this problem? Don't those statements contradict each other?

I just got the issue after updating, never had it before. It doesn't happen often and a reboot fixes it every time. Which leads me to believe it's software.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm beginning to think that perhaps an app that's installed is conflicting with either ram usage or the audio drivers. Unfortunately, in order to find out what it is, a clean system would be needed at this point. No apps installed, test out the audio. If it works then you're in for a long day adding each app one at a time. If it still doesn't work I'd try another set of headphones, although that seems ludicrous. Lastly, since you're rooted you can go back to N if it's that important to you and report the heck out of it to Google. Good luck guys.
Not that it matters to you that much, but I listen to the headphones every day, Spotify, Pandora, Sports Gold and not a single issue on any of them. Bluetooth is another story, but wired static is rare. Search Google issues see if you come up with anything.

I have no issues with streaming services which is probably why you don't have the issue. It only happens to me in audio playing from a web browser or local audio files.

Pixel 4 xl * popping noise * manufacturing defect * known hardware issue *

Hello XDA,
Just got off the phone with google, and found out that the issue with the popping noise in videos is not something they can fix via software . Google Engineers have recommended swapping out the whole device as there is no known fix via software for this issue...
What is even worse is that in order for you to receive a replacement they are asking for a pre-authorization charge on a card until they receive their defective device back.... Like we asked for a defective device....
i do understand the concern of them not getting their phone back but dang... that Sucks!!
Edit *
If anyone will the pixel 4 XL can reproduce the problem on their phones that would be great I want to know if this is happening to a lot of phones or simply to some..
record audio through an app and see if the popping noise happens or record a video using SnapChat Instagram Facebook and see if it happens if it does I feel that Google should acknowledge this and try to fix this as soon as possible
Popping noise in video?

According to them, yes . I was promised that I would not encounter the same issue with the next version that I got. I do recall the same thing happening with the blue hue on the 2 xl . it wasn't necessarily revision it was just one that was better than the other but the underlying issue was still there..
Hmm that's interesting. I was able to reproduce it with an Instagram story. I only record videos in the stock app but maybe I'll save getting a replacement for 1 year so that I can get a fresher battery. [emoji1]

I actually recorded just audio on Facebook messenger through the microphone recording option and it does it on there as well it's not just video whatever is recording is adding that sound.. at first I thought it was just audio but after hearing the recording I just did I realize that it might be something in the input driver that's messed up.. not necessarily having to do with video but probably with the neural core processing more important tasks like the Google Assistant's built in functionality.
crap i just checked my p4xl on snapchat and noticed the popping noise too. guess when i was using the past 2 weeks i always had a lot of background noise anyway to notice
Glad to see people are talking about this on here. I always assumed it as was going to be a software fix as I swapped my 4XL 2 days ago to "fix it" but it wasn't fixed, guess we have to wait for a new batch. argh
It doesn't happen on the stock camera recording app and it doesn't happen on some third party apps. It probably is a software issue that can be addressed with a patch in the future. I really would take what Google Support tells you with a grain of salt. I swapped out a device for another reason and they both had the popping noise on some third party apps and never on the stock camera app recording. You probably will get another one with the same issue as I highly doubt they made a hardware revision and the rep was probably just telling you what you wanted to hear to get you off the phone. I've heard it all before "Oh, we'll have someone in the warehouse check for it before we ship it out". Replacement comes and it has the same issue and you know it's all BS they tell you.
I could reproduce this error with an Instagram story. However this did not occur with WhatsApp voice messages. Maybe it is really a software issue?
Like the YouTube audio description says it happens on my playground mode while recording playground video.

I have the pixel 4, and it also makes the popping/clicking sound. I send it in for a replacement with google and the new one does it too. Now I have to return both, and stay with the pixel 3 for now. They almost didn’t let me return the replacement because I bought the original on release date from them and we are in November now.
Sounds happens, on Tiktok, Snap, Facebook and anything That recorded sound.

Blurry front camera

I love my pixel 3a, even the front camera selfies (even though it has a fixed focus). The phone takes awesome pictures, also with the front camera.
However, during video call (whatsapp or snapchat), the video quality is very very very bad. I mean like there is water in the lens or something or it just can't focus or its trying to smooth out everything till infinity. I don't get how this is possible. I know android doesn't have the best social media camera (compared to iphone, which is better optimized), but my galaxy s8 is doing whatsapp and snapchat video's just fine and in focus.
Other people have experience with this? it's really a pity, because it's the only thing i really dislike at the moment.
Any help would be appreciated.
With kind regards

Just updated to the July patch. Unfortunately still have the same problem. I guess we're just unlucky and it's somehow a hardware issue. I can't imagine that the rest of the pixel 3a owners have the same thing but aren't bothered by it. I read on reddit of one guy who was talking about blurry front camera, but after phone was replaced the problem was gone.
I've had the same problem! My build number is QQ2A.200501.001.B2. I just got a new Pixel 3a as the last camera just died, but it was also an issue on the previous Pixel 3a as well.
Any news on this? I've found several threads on Google support sites regarding this issue but they've ve all been closed without a solution. There must be more people with this issue though and I'm not sure at the moment if this is a hardware issue or not.
Since last night we're in a serious lockdown here in the Netherlands and this is becoming a dealbreaker, cause the front camera is our most used lifeline with friends and family.
I'm on RQ1A.201205.003 and using WhatsApp for video calls.
Edit: see for example this thread from Google support: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/63843045?hl=en
