I am getting very stuttery/laggy/crackly audio over wired headphones and speaker on O - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hello! I never had a problem with my Google Pixel until now.
I downloaded and installed the official Android 8.0 update for my Pixel. As soon as it booted, I did what I normally do and I opened up my audiobooks player to play my 4 hour long MP3 that I listen to. I noticed immediately that the audio was stuttering and crackling, like the way a very old PC would do when you had too many things running while you tried to listen to music.
It is not a bluetooth issue because it happens with wired headphones and even with the internal speaker. It does it whether or not my phone is rooted (does not make a difference). I do not have a lot of apps installed. Again, this did not happen at all on Android N.
The issue is not just with my audio book player app. While it does not happen in Youtube, it also happens if I try to play a video in a web browser. The same horrible audio lagging/stuttering.
I did not see anyone complain about this, so I am at a loss for what it could possibly be. Anyone with any pointers I would greatly appreciate them! It is driving me crazy!

It happens to me too, I have to clear all apps from the background and reboot. Then the audio go back to normal.

It goes back to normal for me after a reboot but it comes right back after not too much time. Why did Google officially release Oreo with this kind of issue?

I had it on nougat also, but it happens a lot more frequently on Oreo.

Has anyone found a fix?

It is some sort of weird RAM issue. I downloaded a RAM cleaner, and even though I have lots of free RAM, cleaning the RAM fixes it (until it eventually comes back). What is going on?

I heard it's hardware. No one else is having these issues. Do an RMA and be done with it.

Where did you hear this? And if it's a hardware issue why isn't it there in Android Nougat?
How did you "hear it's a hardware issue" but never heard of anyone else having this problem? Don't those statements contradict each other?

I just got the issue after updating, never had it before. It doesn't happen often and a reboot fixes it every time. Which leads me to believe it's software.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm beginning to think that perhaps an app that's installed is conflicting with either ram usage or the audio drivers. Unfortunately, in order to find out what it is, a clean system would be needed at this point. No apps installed, test out the audio. If it works then you're in for a long day adding each app one at a time. If it still doesn't work I'd try another set of headphones, although that seems ludicrous. Lastly, since you're rooted you can go back to N if it's that important to you and report the heck out of it to Google. Good luck guys.
Not that it matters to you that much, but I listen to the headphones every day, Spotify, Pandora, Sports Gold and not a single issue on any of them. Bluetooth is another story, but wired static is rare. Search Google issues see if you come up with anything.

I have no issues with streaming services which is probably why you don't have the issue. It only happens to me in audio playing from a web browser or local audio files.

I don't have an issue with any streaming apps, only with local audio files or audio from web browsers.

[Q] YouTube HD playback problem

Hi guys, i just got my transformer and I love it but I have a little problem, HD videos in youtube app stutters!! t is not a connection problem, on my computer they play perfect, and anyway I let it load it the whole video to avoid connection problems.
The video still stutters, sometimes it plays full framerate, but the second after it is jerky!!
Anyone have the same problem?
Should I return it?
MP4 720p in video player just play fine...
PS: I also noticed i have some LCD backlight bleed problem... awwww man...
If hd flash is important it might not be the best solution.
Could wait and hope for a fix, but the tablet market is moving fast, always a risk companies will move on to the next gen product.
So far Tegra 2 + honeycomb seems not ideal, after all the hype?

Flash is not involved here, I am speaking of the official youtube app which should have no stuttering.
Anyone has the same problem??

Not got that problem. Does it still stutter for you via the browser as well?
Mine used to pause a few times when watching videos in the Youtube app but this appears to have been fixed with the latest firmware update.

Yes it does stutter even in the browser.
I will retry when I return home from work. Thanks.

No yputube app does not use flash, in fact i uninstalled FlashPlayer from tablet to be sure of that.
I have the same issue. Coming from a Xoom I noticed it almost immediately. If there is stock soon, I will go to the store and have it replaced. Otherwise I might just return it. There are things I can deal with, stuttering video is not one of them.
Better to wait for Tegra 3 devices in August ?
http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/...e-tegra-3-chip-in-tablets-by-august-20110216/
Or 4 more months after that, until 2012 and get something better! or keep waiting until 2014 and get the best one in their roadmap!

Actually once it can do 1080p high profile, I could care less what is coming out since it would be the complete package. A Tegra 3 device seems like it could be the one. Definitely selling my Transformer and getting a Tegra 3 tablet when it comes out.
I think the problem is related to the youtube app, i had a trip to a local store with an Iconia A500 and played with it a bit. It had the same problem, i doubt a replacement would do the trick. i suppose an OTA update with a revised version of the youtube app or some tweak should be enough.

If thats the case then I don't mind at all, but it's something that I'd like to know *officially*. It's not something that has to be fixed immediately, but I'd like to know that the issue lies with the app and not my hardware.
Edit: But, at the same time, I didn't think many other people were having the same issue.. ?
stuttering playback was an initially known issue with honeycomb. Like someone else mentioned though, the firmware seemed to resolve that issue. Might want to make sure you have the latest and greatest version.

ya mines the US version of the 20110423.. first thing I checked.
It just crummy because my buddy loved my Xoom, especially the Youtube app (hes got a relatively large presence on youtube) and when he went to watch one of his videos (G20 Battle of Toronto) it was stuttering. It's like it will be smooth for a few seconds then get choppy . The audio never skips a beat though.
Just noticed a flash update on the market. Don't know if it'll help you or not. Looks like its now out of beta or something. I didnt really read it all before i installed it. Version 10.2.156.12.
Edit: Bah the irony. Now I'm getting the stuttery video. I wasnt before.

I know i read somewhere that asus was working with google on it. Maybe they still havent completely ironed it out yet. Remember, its still early for honeycomb...
how do you set the youtube app to 720p? i only see an option for HD

I think I may have discovered a fix for the audio issues...

So ever since I got this phone, I've been dissatisfied with the audio quality. No matter what I did, no matter which equalizer I tried, the sound was too low, too muffled, and just plain BAD. I bought a new bluetooth car stereo this week & I haven't even been able to enjoy it that much cause the streaming audio sounds like ear-rape. Tonight I was messing around with Bloat Freezer and I noticed a system app on the list called "Music enhancer". I wondered if this had anything to do with the craptastic audio quality, so I decided to freeze it & see what happened. To my joy, my music now sounds FAR better! It's like night & day, no more crackling, no more muffled audio
I dunno if anyone else is having problems with audio of if this little trick has already been discovered, but I figured I'd share with the class either way. Don't forget to hit that thanks button if I've helped you out
EDIT: You must be temp-rooted to do this.
Will give this a try, thanks

Just edited my first post to include that you have to be temp-rooted to do this. Head over to the sensation android development section & download one of the temp-root packages(I recommend Eugene's- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161283). Follow the instructions to temp-root your phone if you wanna do this trick. Feel free to PM me if you need any help doing this

The top of my screen shows a music note with a stroke or bar through it.
I guess that means I've disabled it.
@the radius kid, no that just means you have your phone on silent lol
Okay I temp rooted and froze music
enhancer through titanium backup. I tried playing a song before and after and didn't notice any difference. when you tried it, was it with a music file or like ringtones and stuff. It seems like you may be on to something there.

Unfortunately, this way won't keep it turned off for long, it'll eventually restart. The only way to really "kill" apps until we get real root is to temp root & freeze them.

I'm playing music. I haven't noticed much difference with ringtones. I really dunno if this tweak will work for everyone, YMMV, but hopefully now that we have some clues we can delve a bit deeper into this issue. One thing that you might try though, is disabling it via ADB. I've noticed that some frozen apps don't get totally frozen unless you do it with ADB.
Froze it using Titanium Backup. Testing now.
OP - in the HTC Music app, Settings > Sound Enhancer, did you have that set to "None"?
I do and the sound on my phone is quite good, without your procedure.
I actually find that the Music Enhancer HELPS my audio quality. Without it, its like listening to music with the headphones sitting on a table in front of me rather than on my ears...
I guess I am just lucky? I have none of the problems that others have been reporting...All except for one big one...DUST UNDER THE SCREEN! (Im on the 2nd phone too!)

This Android stuff takes some getting used to.
The only thing I'm finding is that I have to kill the app' again when I restart the phone, otherwise it does seem to make a difference.
Always get a clicking sound when audio starts regardless of the source with and without this fix.
Just like my Nexus 1, this phone has crap audio quality over headphones and on the speaker. not to mention the mic. HTC seems to always cheap out on these components, my Nexus S was FAAAR superior in this regard. Although I sold it for the bigger screen, and more powerful processor.
Wish there was a way to restore a backup of DSP Manager. I've tried with TB, but the restore option is not available.

Skype sound output problem

All the Skype video calls I was making used to be outputting their sound over the phone speakers. Recently, however, this seems to have changed. The sound is now only outputted via the earpiece, and I do not seem to be able to find the cause of the change, nor how to change it back. There is no speaker toggle button. Makes the video calling fairly cumbersome, since I have to put on the headphones (or Bluetooth), and cannot have a couple of people take part in the call at my end. The recent upgrade (2.5) did not correct the problem. What is annoying is that it was working OK before. I am just not sure before what. Any ideas anybody? Android 2.3.4 (stock HTC/T-Mobile), Skype is most recent stock version.

try viber.
I just used this like 2hrs ago, Toggle the mic button. I thinks it's a red icon, I've had this problem before. If not then try clearing the data. Let's us know.
Switching to another tool (viber) is not an option - it would take me less time to re-code Skype from scratch myself than to get my parents on a different program.
This is still an issue. The only way I am able to work around it is to quickly plug in my earphones and the unplug them. That seems to force skype to switch to the speaker away from the earpiece. I guess I'll have to deal with this until a future version takes care of it (hopefully).

Nexus 5 stutters and has audio distortion when using only YouTube

I'm on my third Nexus 5 that has had issues, and every single one of them have had this one. When using YouTube the video is jerky and stutters, and randomly there will be audio distortion and pops from the speaker. This is the third Nexus 5 I've had with this issue, and nothing I find can fix it. I can barely find any info on the internet about it.
From what I can tell it is limited to YouTube. The thing is, my old S2 on 4.1.2 had no such issue. None of my other electronics have any issues with YouTube to the degree this does. I'm past believing it is an issue with my phone(though it might be), because as I said, I'm on my third Nexus 5 with this issue.
Has anyone else had this issue? What are my options in trying to fix it? I've had such a bad experience with the Nexus line I'm close to giving up and buying a different phone. This is driving me crazy.
I hope someone can help. Thanks.

App is up to date, and my internet speed is at least 10mbps. I have 30 at home and have the same issues. It does this at home, here at work, and on 4G. But it couldn't be the internet connection as it works fine on my old phone and other devices.
Here's some more info.
Stock, unrooted, stock kernel, 4.2.2. I've been tempted to root and unlock the boot loader to install a new kernel and see if that helps, but I'm not used to rooting Nexus devices and don't want to make it difficult to upgrade to 4.4.3 when its released. Hopefully that will fix this issue, but Google has been radio silent on it so I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

I assume by 4.2.2 you meant 4.4.2
Try clearing data and cache on the YouTube app, if that doesn't help try uninstalling/uninstalling updates and reinstalling/reupdating.

Exactly. It's why I've ruled it out being a hardware issue, because this has happened to two other Nexus 5's I've been in possession of. It's so weird.
I've unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, all the fun stuff. I'm gonna try a new kernel to see if that will fix it.

Hiya,
Im having this issue as well. Some of the videos have disortion and stutters, but its not in youtube app. When I play videos form the websites it happens but, not in all of them. Dont know why some are ok and others dont. Sometimes its really annoying, especially when it stutters a lot in the playedback video. I do not know if its a hardware or a software issue.
EDIT:
Just checked the same video in Android Authority app and in Youtube app. In the first app audio stutters and being a wee bit choppy, in Yt however, everything is fine. Audio is clear, no stutters at all. So I assume its software issue and maybe audio codecs dont play well with third party apps. Also, I dont think there is a solution to this problem.

Speaker volume terrible fault

After a few hours after restarting the phone this speakers will become ridiculously quiet
Anyone else getting this? Only rectifies after a restart
I have not had this issue no. It's probably most likely some app you installed or an obscure setting somewhere rather than a fault I reckon. Do you have any paired audio devices? Do you use IFTTT, Google Assistant or Bixby routines running?
Unfortunately the only way you are going to properly troubleshoot is to do a factory reset.

Thanks for the suggestions
I'll have to trial and error I guess.
Updated to new software so let's see how that goes
And lastly is anyone finding the speakers very loud like reviews state? I don't really think it's that loud
