Huawei need to train the customer service representatives

this is one of the things I've said about their technical knowledge, they are constantly providing incorrect information to customers as they don't know their own products, which is one reason why I won't buy another Huawei as their support is not brilliant

Of course, you could buy a Pixel which has no support at all. Post a question in a Google support forum and the response is invariably a generic cut and paste from somewhere in India which has no helpful information at all, as the person posting it either hasn't read or doesn't understand the problem in the first place.
Want easy support? Buy an iPhone.

As we all know, the key to having a truly customizable device is having the source for their builds, and as we also all know, Viewsonic has not released the source code for their Gtablet.
If we all find the correct email to contact, much like all other companies they will be pressured into releasing the source to the community.
Let's get this done.

Please consider listening to what the community as asking for.
By using the Linux Kernel in your device you are required by the Free Software Foundation's General Public License (GPLv2) to release the source code for the kernel. If there is any proprietary software involved in said code, then you have the right to protect your investment, and not include that with the source release.
We are entitled to the source to change our tablets in the way we see fit with the full understanding that when we modify our tablets software we remove ourselves from any sort of warranty you may offer.
Furthermore, we would like an open dialog between with your developers concerning the software which is shipped with the gTablet. It well known among the community that the return rate for the gTablet is unnaturally high. The version of Android developed by Tap n Tap does not provide a positive user experience for the average user. By this time you should be aware of such feedback coming from the main distributors of the gTablet, Sears and Staples. This situation will only continue to get worse as detailed professional reviews of this product begin to circulate around the Internet. One such review I am referring to will be posted to Anandtech.com in the next few days.

Go for it. it has to drop sooner or later. the more pressure from the community, the better. I'll drop them a line as well.
I get the feeling that instead of taking the time to lock the device down like is done with phones and other android devices, they decided they will just not release the code and hope to stall out mods that way.

That'd work, except for the fact that it's against the GPL, and that'd be breaking the law. They have to make it available, it's just a matter of pressuring them into doing so sooner than later.
just sent off my second email to viewsonic regarding the gtablet (along with a note telling them to fwd the email accordingly). i will let you guys know if i get a response.
Just called in. They are taking people's contact info that say they are android developers (they started doing that today) and they said they are not doing it to track us or anything like that, but to contact us...like say...when the source is released.
Everybody, call. Emailing isn't going to get you anywhere.
I informed them that they will legally have to release source under GPL, he said he will be passing that up to the developers. It sounds like we may be getting somewhere, but we need to call...the more the merrier. It sounds like they have a small call center so its not how many times you call, but how many different people call at this point.

Oh yes indeed. But that doesn't mean people won't try to get away with things from time to time. Perhaps they are not even aware. I know I am going to call and ask soon even though I just started developing on android.

I'm serious - in a world of reps in third world countries speaking broken english and working off a script, the VS reps are a breath of fresh air and Viewsonic should be commended for that alone. I put in my usual request to please release the source and I was told that they will pass it onto the development team.
I don't expect anything to come from it, but they do know who I am and who we are, so I'm hoping that VS management throws us a bone once they realize what a mistake it was adding that TnT layer.

I agree. The guy I talked to was pretty cool. He also said that the developers are being very persistent about keeping TnT in place. Very nice to talk to someone that can actually speak English

x2 on that! Rule of thumb - if you write something here about a conversation with CS, assume that their management might read it and how that would look.
Just spoke with Mike @ Viewsonic gtablet support. First, they are very nice! Second, Mike said that they are working on a release, but no date yet. Finally, Mike said that they would be posting it to viewsonic.com/gtablet website (and to also check xda-developers.com for other updates).
They also took my e-mail address - hopefully to send out a blast when they are finally able to post it.

I figured I would do my part as well. I called & spoke to a tech who said they were not releasing it & have no plans to do so. I said its linux based & the GPL says they have to release the source by law. He said they dont support changing the operating system. I said Android is linux based & falls under the GPL. He then transfered me to a senior tech who said:
Tap n tap is proprietary & therefore it doesn’t fall in the GPL. He said the TNT is also horrendous & they want to protect the tap n tap ‘investment’ which is why the source wont be released. They did not ask for my information aside from my first name for the conversation we had. He basically said they were not going to release the source regardless of how many people called. The only way to get it is to sue the company & force them to do so. Obviously, I am not looking to spend more money just to get the source. He knows that, the company knows that & until someone bucks up & hires an attorney, viewsonic doesn’t care.
He did say that they did get a number of calls, he feels for me, he said others have rooted it but tough titties (my summary).

What I don't understand is why is it that HTC is bound to GPL in that it must release source for its devices even though the majority of HTC devices has the proprietary software, Sense?
I don't think having proprietary software on a device exempts a company from conforming to GPL.
i think they must be new to linux or HTC is very used to dealing with Linux.
The senior tech was sympathetic but was firm in repeating the company plans. Heck their twitter page sais the same exact thing.
It makes me wonder if I should return it.

I agree- without source, the gtab won't be able to experience its full potential especially if Viewsonic thinks anyone likes tapntap. Makes me wonder if I should return mine even though (outside of a few annoyances) I really like the device.
Viewsonic has to release source. Their device is Linux based with a proprietary software user interface just like HTC devices. This is ridiculous.

I won't buy another Blu device.

This phone has a lot of potential, but it will never be anything more. The reason I say this is because of Blu's business model, which I was unaware of when I bought the device. They do not have an R&D department. They are just middle men. Gionee makes most of their phones and they simply rebrand them. That is why they offer zero support. They can't. The don't have anything to do with the phone other than distribution. So there will never be upgrades to software unless Gionee makes it, but that probably won't happen because they are not in software development business. They primarily only make the phones, so support is not a major concern for them as well. Blu just constantly buys phones and throws them out there. There was this phone, which was quickly forgotten as they transitioned to their next phone, the VIVO 5. There was supposed to be an MM upgrade for this device. I don't believe they ever saw it. Now they are onto the ENERGY XL and the VIVO will be forgotten. They will never release any code or info on the phones, because they can't. They don't own it or have created it. They just middle man and rebrand. Hence, there will always be little to no development for any Blu device.
This has been covered many MANY times here on XDA... Maybe you could have done some reading before purchase. I for one dont make purchases without at least reading some reviews and seeing what other people have said about the company / service / product.
One would assume a member of the XDA community would have the forethought to do the same.

No this may not be a site for buyers remorse, but it is a site about facts and the fact is BLU does not own anything and therefore can not produce updates, release code, stock roms, or anything else beneficial to development. Is that better? BTW, I did research this phone and the vast majority of reviews were positive.
And once again if you had done even a TINY bit of research about the brand, you would have known this... they do not try to hide this information... so once again I am TRULY SORRY you bought something you dont like, and I am VERY GLAD you have learned from the experience and have grown from it...

As far as positive reviews, I love the phone, using different launcher and exposed its good phone... dont know what your beef is with the company or the phone... they could have locked the boot loader or encrypted it to the point we cant even root it, but none of that has happened... so quit being a "negative Nancy" and look at the brightside

I can't code this phone and apparently not many can. There is no source code to work with that has been released and I don't have the time to reverse engineer this device. This site is about sharing information and if I can help some to not make the same mistake I did, then I have succeeded. So please don't shoot the messenger, BLU is who your issue should be with.

There are A LOT of people that CAN code for this phone, we just only have 2 or 3 that are busy as hell, so we dont make much progress... once again if you want it served up on silver platter, learn to code, or put up some reward money (thats how we got root btw)
but "the airing of grievances" is for festivus not for xda, so quit banging that head on the aluminum pole

kit kat is latest updates the advertise, you have lollipop but still arent happy, to the point you had to come on a community site who actually read, and like the phones they purchased...just to bad mouth and spout negativity toward a phone that most people who purchased are very happy with (hence the plethora of positive reviews you mentioned.)
this isnt a place to vent your personal experiences about a uninformed purchase you made (nor is it a place for me to decide ANYTHING, i AM NOT a MOD) but my suggestion is to do more research next time, maybe see if there are roms available for a phone BEFORE you purchase it, and research the companies record for updated BEFORE you purchase... being angry after the fact for making a poor decision not only is "crying over spilled milk" but also unbecoming and unhelpful...
BLU is a company with a reputation for selling CHEAP, REBRANDED, CHINESE phones from GIONEE... this is all COMMON KNOWLEDGE and very easily found out with very little effort... (one would even say less effort than the tirade post you started this whole debacle with, certainly less keystrokes)
SO by all means maybe do some more research (I tried to help with the definition of grievance for you, since you obviously you chose to ignore it, or do not know it)

It's an 18 month old device, receiving the latest OS is fairly uncommon for devices of that age.
The fact about such customer service associates is that they don't care about the person they are talking with and nor about the company they are working for. They have automated replies for certain types of queries which they forward or frame sentences having the same meaning.
So even if we ask or request them thousands of times they would simply submit the conclusion of the query to their system and put an end to it. We can only believe about a update if it's stated publicly via their websites, social networks, official blogs, etc.
It just says not eligible for a nougat update, but that could simply mean at this moment in time since officially there is no nougat update for any iteration of the Style/Pure. These guys are typically front end customer service reps and may or may not have any knowledge of what goes on in the programming/development departments.
It also means .....don't call us we'll call you and if we have something to say we'll say it.... So stop bugging us!!!!
Lol the same canned responses came out when I was on the lgg3 in regards to Marshmellow. And we ended up getting it. As others said quit asking front end dumb dumbs who know nothing about this as they only know what their computer says at the moment.
I used to work in customer service. Customer service workers know nothing regarding what goes on behind the scenes... If they did, they'd be getting paid a hell of a lot more than they do. Their only job is to get the customer off the line with as little friction as possible-- as fast as possible. They don't care about your personal grievances nor do they have any influence on the company that they work for. As long as they did not objectively insult you, they did their job regardless if they even answered your question. And Damn was I good at all of the above.... Sometimes depending on how the customer approached me and the customer's level of intelligence I'd throw a sly sideways insult in there in such a way that I could get away with it on the recordings. Moral of the story - don't make the assumption that customer service cares.
Also... Please be nice to customer service reps... Because of all of the above, if you actually want something from them, be SUPER NICE AND APPRECIATIVE... Then and only then will they go out of their way for you..... /end of rant [emoji4]

LOL. Being super nice has not always worked in my experience... But then again, if the reps are working from a scripted system and are making me go through a process that I have already been through the first two times I've called about fixing a specific issue after I have informed then of previous calls, they deserve a firmer response.

You are right. I should have clarified. I was speaking about US based customer service. They typically don't have hard "scripts" just guides and touching points. Foreign customer service have the scripts that they will ramble off... because they don't even understand what you are trying to say in the first place. You will never get anywhere with outsourced service... That is the reason why I only deal with companies that have service in the US for the important stuff that I don't play around with (banking and credit cards)

Believe it or not, banks outsource their service too. My gf works for Chase. She's in the Philippines.
According to the only official source we have, the Moto X Pure will still be receiving Nougat.
Yes many companies do outsource. However, some are actually smart about it. My bank doesn't outsource and they have always provided phenomenal service for the hour of day. However, with tech companies, due to bad customer service experience, by the time I have to call them, I have thoroughly researched the issue and tried everything I could. I have found that due to the fact I have some degree of technical knowledge and know how, when I start explaining the issues and what I've done to the rep, they are lost before I get started good. It is at that point I politely ask for someone who can actually understand the jargon.
Yeah Moto's help site says we are still.

However we have not started rolling out Nougat update for Moto X Style devices. I would not be able to commit on the release date from when it should be rolled out. We don't know anymore... It used to be through the Motorola Feedback Network, but you can't enroll devices anymore, the link is just gone.

Yet it has had a limited roll out of n and we have been promised we would get updates. Quicker than we are n should have been pushed to our devices in December and we should be discussing if we will get O or not(not likely we are not Nexus/pixel)

I'm not saying it wont receive N, I'm just pointing out it's not as strong a candidate as a lot of newer devices. News of the soak test sounds promising, but I'm yet to see any evidence of it... You'd think a few benchmarks would be cropping up etc.

ZTE has halted operations because of US ban

From CNN:
"ZTE Corporation, one of China's largest tech companies, has halted "major operating activities" after a US ban against the company went into effect, according to a new public filing."
"Some of the company's products, which includes smartphones and telecommunications equipment, appeared to be taken offline Wednesday. "
And this is so stupid because not everyone lives in the US.........
Unfortunately ZTE have not kept up an agreement with the US and action has been taken .... makes me think thank god for tdm and his amazing work

The biggest part of the seven-year ban involves no buying any products from US based companies. So no Qualcomm chips, no Dolby, etc. That's what really is devastating to them.
That being said it still sucks. It seemed like they were heading in a good direction, but they violated terms of a legal settlement. I'll still be using my Axon 7 Mini as a "backup" phone, but unfortunately won't be able to get another ZTE...

If I were you I would maybe go with Huawei, they manufacture most of the parts themselves. Don't know if they will be also banned soon
ZTE should partner with Huawei and get the parts from them. Although I am unsure which supplier is being used for WiFi (if it would be Broadcom it would be funny)

Partnering with Huawei might get past finding a supplier for the CPU/SoC - switch from Snapdragon to Kirin. Mediatek would be another option.
Still, they'd be stuck needing to roll out a whole new lineup of devices based on the new hardware.
In any event, would still have trouble purchasing a license for Google-certified Android software such as the Play Services, Play Store, etc.
However, it's starting to look like the USA strategy all along was to use this export ban as a bargaining tool to force China to make concessions in ongoing trade negotiations. There's nothing like going thermonuclear (figuratively speaking) to catch your adversary's (also known as "trading partner's") attention. Trump has recently tweeted that he's open to "working together" with the Chinese government to re-start ZTE's operations. (On the other hand, I've read in other news sources claiming that the most recent string of events with the USA backpedaling on the ZTE file is evidence of China preying on a naive USA trade strategy. Who knows: Maybe both opinions are true?)

A word of caution

Like many here, I bought a "foreign" phone.
Like some, it needed repair.
Unlike most(?), I just found out that you can't have your phone (oficially) repaired outside of its intended market. You just can't.
This, regardless of whether the parts you need are market specific or not, or whether the phone is under warranty or not.
It's simply just not possible, and it's not even up to the good will of the repair center.
And if you're thinking "it's ok, I'll just send it to wherever it came from, pay whatever shipping fees and go through any customs import/export hassle, and be cool about it", well...
I've got news for you:
You still can't. As I've been told by their online support, you simply just can't do that, either; you'll have to have someone to send it to, so that they then can send it for repair on their own. That's the only way you can have it repaired abroad.
So, good luck if you're travelling, half way across the world, and need your phone repaired asap.
This is how things work smack in the middle of the XXI century, with the leading brand in the world, as well as with every other brands. Except for...
Apple.
So, bottom line is diss Apple all you want for whatever reason, but the fact is, at least on this particular, it seems it's the only brand with a minimally acceptable customer support policy for these days and age.
Wonder how many of you are aware of this.
Think XDA should address this issue and raise awareness with an article?

Understood all, but how is it XDA issue, XDA doesn't monitor where, how or who, Members purchase from or where to get your devices repaired.
This is solely on the Users/Members. If others are in this situation, doing their own homework on the type of device they purchase i.e. if repairs are needed or where to get repairs or the type of development, that is solely on them.
Again, I see and understand your thought, but XDA doesnt play a part of what kind of devices Members get and where to get them repaired.
I believe you can claim warranty/repair in another country within Europe only.

Apple does have the same issue if you don't have an apple store in your country... I live in Argentina and Apple request you send personally the phone to some apple store in other countries... you cannot just ship it to them.

I just said you could write an article about it, because I bet most people, even here, have no idea about it, until it's too late, even when they're tech savvy as myself.
You know, like I said, to raise awareness, specially nowadays, when buying online is so prevalent and you may not even have an idea where the phone came from or was intended for.

You believe wrongly; if it's a grey import, it's the seller's responsibility (if you're lucky enough), not the manufacturer.
