I'm going nuts trying to figure out how to fix my MMS issues — maybe you guys can help. I have an unrooted N5 running 4.4.4 that is inconsistently receiving MMS messages (both photos and group texts). I'm currently using StraightTalk, though I was having the same issue with Cricket.
My APN settings are correct (from what I can figure), and sometimes I receive incoming MMS. I currently have Textra and GoSMS installed as my texting apps, with GoSMS currently as my default. Occasionally I'll receive an error in GoSMS that an MMS message was unable to be downloaded, and try as I may, I can never get the app to download and display it. However, if I open up Textra, the message will have come through there with no problem. So basically, unless I have 2 apps gathering MMS, I'll miss half of them. I only installed GoSMS after seeing it as a suggestion/solution in another forum - this was happening before I both installed. I was originally using Hangouts for SMS/MMS, which was having the same problem (and why I initially DL'd Textra).
I occasionally have issues sending out an MMS. It's a less frequent occurrence than the issues receiving, though it does happen.
I am thinking that if this was a network issue, the MMS wouldn't come through to my phone at all, so I've stopped trying to mess with my APN. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?
I have Straight Talk too and been having issues with MMS i'm using 8sms. I have the old 3g sims card. what about you ?

I just got my SIM card last month, so I'm pretty sure it's the new one.

I'm currently having the same issue with a non rooted device.
I was originally with H20 (an AT&T mvno) and would have periodic issues with MMS. Both sending and receiving. I am using Google Hangouts.
I recently switched to Cricket (owned by AT&T) earlier this month (reasons unrelated), and have not been able to send or receive an MMS since. I have spent several hours on the phone with both Cricket and LG, even going into a store to have my SIM replaced. I came across this thread accidentally while looking for suggestions on the best way to do a backup before I try a factory reset as a last resort to resolve the problem.
APN has been verified correct numerous times and unfortunately, Cricket's cust service is next to useless. After two and a half weeks and numerous calls, I still have yet to hear back from a Tech Support rep. I'm not sure whose network straight talk uses, but I wonder if it's a network issue with AT&T subcarriers?
The most frustrating part is every time I talk to somewhat at Cricket cust service, they say that the Nexus 5 is not "officially supported" on their network and that it is probably a phone issue and try to sell me a new phone. When I explain that the Nexus 5 runs stock Android, they try and tell me that that might be the problem *SMH*.
Anyone else?

Yes me too. I found out today that my G2 can't get MMS at all. I've tried tons of fixes and nothing seems to work.
No sure if anyone is still experiencing the MMS issues on Nexus 5 as I am. I have a stock, unrooted N5 running Android 4.4.4 on Tmobile. GoSMS is my default sms client. What happens totally randomly is that I COMPLETELY lose the ability to send/receive MMS picture messages (group messages that come in as MMS are unaffected). Once I lose MMS, ALL text I have which have picture messages attached change from viewable icons to blank images or "Xs". All MMS messages in go become white boxes that say "picture does not exist). It has not mattered if I have taken all other text clients off the phone and used ONLY Hangouts as the default, it still happens. This is the ONLY solution I've found to fix the issue:
1) Set Hangout as default sms client
2) Reset APNs to default (settings-->SMS-->Access Point Names--> hit three dots-->reset to default)
3) Go to main phone settings (Settings-->More-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names), reset to default
4) Select the APNs that your device normally uses (for me, its fast.t-mobile.com), set MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
5) go back into Hangouts, select the same APN (fast.t-mobile.com), set the MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
6) Reboot phone
Once its rebooted, if your MMS images are once again viewable in Hangouts, its fixed and you can send/receive picture messages again. You can now switch to whatever default client you chose. This has worked for me EVERY time to 'fix' the MMS issue, but what I have never figured out is WHY its happening and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. I want to say the update to 4.4.2 may have triggered it, but I honestly can't recall. I know this wasn't ALWAYS an issue. If anyone else has any theories/ideas, I'm all ears. Its just a pain in the a** to have to reset the APNS in two spots and reboot every time this happens (I think I read that Hangouts' APN settings can override the system APN settings so that's why I reset in both spots). I've tried ONLY resetting the main phone's APN and it didn't fix the issue.

**com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel** is your gn0me in the engine;
where sms/ mms is *natively* transported via the native phone functions & hooks, hangouts provides the same functionality *over the top* of the carrier's route, strictly IP; call it hi-jacking in a sense, that's what you en-able hangouts to do on reboots, hijack those functions..
*SIM toolkit
*Phone/Messaging storage
*Phone
is what com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel is tied to, which hangouts, isn't..
Last update to hangouts screwed up my APN setting. ?

Hello everyone,
I have the T-Mobile Z3 and absolutely LOVE my phone. The ONLY real issue I have is regarding MMS.
When I leave VoLTE enabled, it seems to interfere with me getting all my MMS messages. I get most, but not all. So after disabling it, and I've been using Textra too........ everything seems to be fine. But I am not happy that I have to disable VoLTE in order for me to get all my MMS messages. I disabled stock messenger b/c it had issues before with properly handling MMS messages (and Textra is prettier lol).
So now I'm hearing that since Lollipop, the MMS issues the stock app had are gone, and it works 100% of the time. Great! But I wonder........ does anyone reading this who uses stock notice the same thing with VoLTE ENABLED??! As much as I love Textra, I might go back to stock if someone can confirm VoLTE is enabled when they use stock messenger and they have gone WEEKS (or months) w/o missing any MMS or even SMS messages. Please let me know and feel free to elaborate as much as possible.
Thank You,
RockStar2005
I have VoLTE enabled and stock messenger works fine for MMS so far.
Hey abhinav,
How many weeks have you had VoLTE enabled since getting Lollipop? Also, you have T-Mobile for your Z3 right??
One more thing..............do you use an alternate APN or just the regular default one??
Thanks!
I have T-Mobile indeed and have never turned off VoLTE. However do note I sent and recieved only a few MMS (20-30) so take that into consideration as well.
Well 20-30 is still considerable.
Do you use an alternate APN or just the regular default one? I'm guessing default, but let me know either way.
I'm thinking I may just go ahead and give and stock a shot. The only thing I really dislike with stock is that you're forced to use the white background theme, which I don't like as much on my eyes as the dark background themes. Oh well. That should be a standard option to choose between white and black backgrounds.
Thanks Abhinav....... I'll try it out and we'll see what happens!
Sorry I forgot to mention that I use the default APN.
Abhinav,
Ok great!
No that's fine....... I figured you did anyway. Which is good cuz that means you didn't have to do anything extra to keep things in line.
Allright I'll try it too then...... hopefully I have the same luck. lol
Thanks!
Abhinav,
Since yesterday I've been using Stock and Textra's been uninstalled. I also reverted to my default APN and re-enabled VoLTE. We'll see how things go in the next few weeks regarding MMS messages.
One thing I noticed though after switching is that when I got an MMS message with a pic attached, my Stock app would create a separate thread for the sender, which would only have a "Message not downloaded" text in it and nothing else, and then the actual group MMS text (separate thread) with the attached word message & pic would be there. So then I have to go and delete that sender only text thread b/c it has nothing of importance. Why does Stock even create that?? I wish I knew how to make it stop. But if this works out like it has for you, I guess I can't really complain.
2 other minor things that I wish Stock would include are: 1) Let you choose the theme for background and text boxes like Textra does (I don't like white backgrounds very much) and 2) I wish it would let you choose the notification light color like Textra does. The blinking white light is the same one that my e-mail and voicemail apps use. For Textra, it would let you choose any color, and I'd choose blue.
Oh well. lol
Thanks.
Let me ask you........ I saw a post from last Nov where you said you were using Google Messenger, but now you say you use Stock. I'd actually prefer to use GM, but let me ask you, why did you go back to Stock? Was there an issue with GM? Please give as much detail as possible.
I see from that post that there issues with double messages etc. Do you know of anyone who has tried GM POST-Lollipop on the Z3 with VoLTE enabled w/o issue?
Thank You.
Hello, sorry I have to change my XDA theme just to enter this thread, so I didn't see your replies till now lol. As for Hangouts I had issues sending MMS via WiFi so I had to use stock and haven't gone back since.
Well I just tested again since you asked, same issue even now with Hangouts.
Abhinav,
It's fine. No prob!
Hangouts? No I asked about Google Messenger. lol I only use Hangouts for IMs.
Just reread my last post and lemme know when you can. Thanks man!!
My apologies, I tried Messenger just now, same issue, it says cellular data is turned off.
No problem brotha. lol
Google Messenger is saying that? So even though your cellular data IS on it says it's off??
I briefly tried GM earlier on. Seems to work fine, but since Textra didn't seem to mix well with VoLTE, I'm wary of trusting another third party texting app, EVEN one made by Google. lol
That would be correct. Maybe the stock messenger is somehow tweaked to allow MMS via WiFi.
Oh ok. Weird b/c I'm NOT having that issue. And yes, I believe Lollipop fixed the Stock app finally with regards to MMS and even WiFi being on when an MMS comes in.
My one issue with Stock is, b/c I can't whitelist it on Stamina Mode Whitelist, even though it does LET MMS messages through right away when Stamina Mode has kicked in (15 min after screen went off), even though I have "Auto Download MMS messages" enabled, it doesn't always download them. So if I get a mass text from some people, I'm MAYBE gonna have to manually download each message individually? GM doesn't appear to do that from a test I ran, but will it work with VoLTE enabled? lol (Let me stress again, Stock only does this SOMETIMES, not all the time.)
I tried another test and GM failed in 2 MINOR ways: 1) When Stamina Mode is on and WiFi too, my Z3 DOES NOT notify me of the incoming MMS message (b/c of Stamina Mode being on probably). Upon turning the screen on though the message comes in right away, and the time stamp on it is actually correct, and it already downloaded the MMS msg too unlike what Stock sometimes does. 2) The sender's phone doesn't show DELIVERED when using GM on my phone, just SENT. But with Stock it does show as DELIVERED.
Although I dislike the idea of having to SOMETIMES manually download MMS messages, I dislike the idea of not being notified about them until I turn on the screen even more. lol Therefore, I'm going to stick with Stock. lol
A few bits of information to start.
- I have been on the same ROM and same settings for over a year (including APN)
- I use ChompSMS, but have uninstalled it as part of testing
- I have tested both on and off of WiFI
- I am on StraightTalk
- I used a different APN than what they have on their site, and when this started, I updated to the one they list there now, but the problem remained the same on both options.
Now, my problem, for the past two days, any MMS (I believe based on past history that these are group conversations, not individual MMS messages), are not downloading. Using the built in Messanger application I get an error that it cannot download the message. With ChompSMS, installed, I get the message that it cannot download MMS and to check my APN settings. I tested sending myself an image MMS, and that both sent and got received. Other than that test, I've got nothing the past two days other than that error from Chomp (or nothing from the built in) at the rate of 4-5 times every 30 minutes (the approx rate I'd normally get a message in a group text).
What I have left to try:
- I'm using SMS Backup & Restore to backup my SMS/MMS and then I'm going to wipe out the database and restore my messages
However, anyone have any other ideas what might be wrong or what I can do to fix this?

Do you happen to use PushBullet? If so, uncheck "SMS sync" and reboot. That always causes issues for me.

Unfortunately no. I don't have anything that could have caused this. Since Saturday, I've only updated "Reddit is fun golden platinum", "dolphin browser", and "power toggles" (installed, but never run).
The above was on Sunday
The problem began on Tuesday afternoon.
Prior to that, it was working.

I'm assuming it is something with Marshmallow and Cricket causing the issue. My Nexus 5 on Cricket won't receive MMS if WiFi is on. If I leave WiFi off, I can receive and send MMS fine. My wife has a Moto X on Lollipop on Cricket and can receive MMS fine with WiFi on.
My situation was very similar to yours in that MMS was working fine for weeks after I upgraded to 6.0. It then just stopped randomly. I still have not found a work around other than disabling WiFi.

That's not the same issue.
This is an issue affecting all (most) of straight talk, and has nothing to do with the phone or the setting.
Wifi on/off doesn't have an effect.
So, it's not a phone issue, just a Straight Talk one.

This is my exact life, please let me know if you figure it out better. I do think Pushbullet was screwing me up too, even just having it installed without SMS sync.
MMS always downloaded fine with Pushbullet installed, but since upgrading to Marshmallow, I haven't been able to download a single MMS on my N5. I'm on T-Mobile, not Straight Talk.
Are you sure it's not related to the more-widespread issue of MMS not working with WiFi on?
EDIT: See here.
Actually having this problem on mine as well now (AT&T). Had auto updates off. Nothing changed to my knowledge. Just not downloading some MMS' in Google Messenger. Some it will download. Standard txt's seem fine? Have a group of about 4 under a user category (this is usually where various threads/contacts are shown in Messenger) "message not found". Then under known contacts, I had 4 labeled as "couldn't download" - "touch to download" - which upon touching, state "downloading"... which at some point fails (like, lots longer later - 10 minutes +, and states the msg size is 709KB?)
Also, just noted the "more-widespread issue of MMS not working with WiFi on". Will investigate this possibility.
edit: my wifi has been off. So, not a culprit with my particular problem.
Yup, standard SMS works, but the only way I can get MMS to work in any client is to cycle WiFi and reboot. It's an enormous bug.
I've tried the different settings here https://apn.gishan.net/settings/1654_40_project_fi_apn_settings_for_huawei_mate_9.php
I've tried different messaging apps, Textra is my main messaging app however Signal and the stock Messaging app on the phone show the MMS messages that won't download where as Textra doesn't show anything but the notification saying failure to download.
I have the Project Fi app installed and made sure to give it every permission I can within the app settings menu and it gives me the T077 error which I expected since the Mate 9 is not a "supported" phone but I have good T Mobile service in my area. I've tried changing all the different MMS settings in Textra, tried changing APN's in the phone settings, making sure everything was on IPv4 instead of 6 and I know my cell data works with the phone, it's JUST MMS not working for some reason.
Anyone have any ideas or fixed this yet? Would rooting help in any way? This is a really nice phone coming from a Project Fi Nexus 6P and I don't want to return it because I can't get MMS to work, but the fact that it's not working is a deal breaker.
Edit: I ordered another SIM and a Data Only SIM from Project Fi to test out in the event I can't fix it within some settings.

Not sure if this will help or not. I am on Cricket Wireless and Textra is the only app I can download MMS. I had to go to settings/MMS/ and change MMS behavior to "Legacy". It fixed it for me. Hope that helps.
So, with today's announcement that Android Messages had a Web client, I wanted to give it a try.
Except testing it, mms wouldn't send or receive.
So, what gives? Any fix?

I have checked my apn. Everything else is fine.
I think it s a Xiaomi phone issue. Guess I just won't buy anymore.
Were you even able to use android messages? I restored all of my SMS, yet Android Messages still displays zero threads.

Yeah , it didn't restore my threads. Didn't bother me much because I can start new.
Regular texting works fine.
It's just MMS.
I was advised before I ever bought the phone that this is a Xiaomi issue. I'm not sure why, but so far using the stock app hasn't bothered me. I'd like the added functionality of group messages and the web client, however not at the expense of MMS.
I usually have issues with Xiaomi devices and 3rd Party SMS apps, however android messages works fine for me. I'm on T-mobile in the US. MMS working fine both ways. I did have to manually input my phone number because it couldn't read it from the SIM though in Android Messages < Settings < Advanced < Phone Number

Did you add the country code to your phone number as well? Going to try this. It's annoying that Android messages seems to pull from a separate database than MIUI Messenger, but it's even more annoying how MIUI messenger handles group conversations.
Also did you edit any of your APN Settings? I can't seem to get it to work.

My SMS database is the same as the stock MIUI message app right now. Maybe you should uninstall and reinstall? I did actually add the country code intially but it seems to remove it automatically. But yes group messaging is the only reason I switched apps too. It's such a basic feature, I can't believe they haven't implemented it yet

That's odd. I used SMS Backup and restore, and the messages showed in the MIUI app, but not Android. Now when I try to send MMS in the Android App it immediately fails. Did you update your APN settings manually? Or was it just the cell phone number?

My messages were copied over from my old phone when I used the NFC touch to set them up. I didn't know that was going to happen but I'm totally ok with it, however I have the same issue in that they show up fine in MIUI Messages but not Android Messages. I also confirmed my phone number is present in Android Messages and tried to send an MMS but it still failed. I'm on Verizon with a Global 6/64 version of the phone on the latest MIUI 9 update.

I think the difference is I've owned a Xiaomi device and my SMS was restored by their cloud process. I've also used textra and the SMS shows up there for me as well so maybe that's it. But I did adjust the APN, but I just had to select the correct one from the list, I didn't have to manually edit anything.
I haven't been able to get Android Messages to send MMS, but if i switch to MIUI messages it works, and it also works in Pulse SMS. I blame the android messages app. I had trouble with it in the past on a previous phone too. For now i'm sticking with Pulse

I couldn't get Pulse to work either. I wasn't receiving group messages at all. Only Textra has worked for me so far.
Messages is working fully for me on global miui 10 beta. It can see SMS restores by 3rd party backup and MMS is working perfectly too.

I can't wait for my bootloader to get unlocked so I can upgrade. 12 more days...smh
I cracked my Mi Mix 2s screen so bought a Mi 8 to try something different. Same issue. However.... Just today I got an update notification for the latest Miui 9 Global stable rom. And guess what MMS and Android messages are working now!!!!! Guessing it will be the same result on the Mi Mix 2s. I'm running MIUI Global 9.6.7 (OEAMIFD)
If you want to use third party app like Textra or pulse to send mms you juste have to allow "display over other apps" for that particular app in the privacy settings of your xiaomi phone
