[Q] Repair Nexus 5 or get Z3 Compact

So my N5 is pretty messed up after the phone was physically bent. It is hardly noticable if you just glance at it but if you look closely it doesn't lie flat on the table when I place it on the screen and you can see glass is actually lifting off of the phone a bit. Now the real issue is the display and the touch response. As you can see in the attached pic, I can hardly see anything on it because of the black vertical lines covering 80% of the screen. For the first few days of using it after the damage, this was the only issue. The other day it started over heating pretty badly while I was using it until it completely drained its battery really fast. In the same day I noticed the glass lifting off (possibly result of the overheating?) and the touch response started getting pretty bad too. Now it randomly reboots a couple times a day.
Initially I thought it was only going to be an LCD replacement but it looks like it'll be more than that. Any phone repair experts have a clue what parts are damaged based on my description or how much I'm looking at for repairs? I'm just hoping it'll be reasonable (250 or less) or else I might as well move on and get a new phone even though I loved this phone.
I know that realistically the cost of repairing these problems are gonna be ridiculous so I've already started looking into different phones. After the announcement of the N6 with the size and price being confirmed I think I'll pass on that. It looks like it'll be the Z3 compact if I decide to get a new phone but I'm just afraid of the non stock skin and there doesn't appear to be any nice stock looking roms for it yet.
Any suggestions on what you guys would do in this situation?

Since it's bent, LG will most probably return it with a message saying it's beyond repair.
After yesterday's announcement, looks like Google has no plans on replacing the Nexus 6 with the 5 (like 7 made way for the 9). So, if I were you, I would probably get another Nexus 5 (may be with a different color). I love stock android and quick updates/tons of development and also the budget is an important factor for me. Hence, I would surely suggest you to buy a n5 again.
Ahh well, it's just me I guess. TBH, no one can tell you what to buy, it really comes down to your liking, budget and what you expect from your device!

Personally, I would never buy a 1 year old phone, but thats me and I always like the latest. The Z3 compact actually looks really good, if you can go down in screen size.

I would exchange my n5 wid a z3 compact any moment. .
I find n5 a bit large ...plus 4-5hrs sot was a downgrade from i9082 which easily touched 7hrs sot...
So if my nexus was damaged ... Z3C would be my choice

I want to send it to LG to repair just to get an idea of how much it'd cost but would they charge me for the shipping and labour of taking it apart to look at it? I won't go through with repairs if it costs too much. I'm rooted and running a custom rom but none of my damages are covered under warranty anyways so I don't know if I still need to unroot before I send it in or anything.
I love the N5 but not enough to buy another one a year after its been out unless someone is willing to sell their mint 32gb for under $250. Like rootSU, I just can't buy a year old phone if I'm shelling out money for a new phone.

Wasn't Google replacing Nexus 5s for free no matter what happened to it?

Should I still buy the OPO?

Hi!
Well, I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 as a gift and as much as I appreciate it, I'm not a fan of the Samsung brand because of their build quality (it improved in those 2014-end devices but I'm talking about the GS4). The GS4 is being sold by the main stores at 399€ so I'm planning to sell it for 320€/350€, buy the OnePlus One and even buy a case/skin for it.
Well, trading the GS4 for the OPO is a no brainer but I am thinking in selling the GS4, get the money and save it to spend it later on a better 2015 phone.
What should I do? Should I buy the OPO, should I buy another device or should I wait? I would buy the OPO without a doubt if it was some months before but after hearing all the confusion between OnePlus and Cyanogen, CM12s being promised to around this date and still being unreleased... Should I wait for a possible "OnePlus Two"? Should I buy a Nexus device? (I currently own a Galaxy Nexus)

You won't get $350 for your s4, check swappa.com for me easy place to sell and to get a realistic idea of what you'll get for yours. I've had a lot of phones and the 1+1 is far and away my favorite. Dev community is excellent, hardware is top notch, great speakers, beautiful screen, awesome battery life, it's really does everything perfectly. How long do you typically keep your devices, though? If you want to keep your next phone for more than a year, I'd say to wait and see what 2015 flagships bring.

Without a doubt if your interested, buy the phone! I've recently bought a Nexus 6 and the OPO is still one of my favorite phones of all time even compared to the Nexus 6!

Nah man, I can sell it for 350/320€ without a problem. Here in Portugal mobile contracts are rare, 95% of the population buys the phones carrier locked (which means we can only use that carrier's SIM cards in our phones) and the devices are expensive. GS4 is being sold at 399€ new in the big carriers so I can sure sell it for less 50 or 80 euros.
I have my Galaxy Nexus for almost 3 years and I don't change my devices often, maybe 3 to 4 years. I also can't spend over 500€ on a device so I don't have wallet for a HTC or a LG or a high end Samsung (even though they aren't the best price/quality choices, I'm just stating xd).
I would be sad if I bought the OnePlus One today and June or July comes and "OnePlus Two" comes at the same price, with better specs and the CM12s. But I don't also want to wait until OnePlus decides do reveal or not a new device. That's why I'm asking here, to know the thoughts of the ones who bought the OPO since they sure are better informed than me.

Definitely get it. I had motorola, samsung, nexus etc I even had the LG G3 before coming to the 1+. I love it, hands down the best phone I have owned and I wouldn't get rid of it till it is properly dead.

I wouldn't be sad, theres always going to be the 'next' follow up phone, even if you buy the 'newest' it doesnt take long for a successor to come along or at least the rumours. With the Oneplus One you are still getting great value for money, stable CM11S, CM12S due shortly (definitely), along with OxygenOS and lot of other custom ROMs to pick from. Not to mention the obvious like nexus-easy bootloader unlock and root.
You can also now get a OPO relatively easy, plenty of invites knocking about or just purchase directly every Tuesday. I imagine its going to be pretty hard to get hold of an invite for the Oneplus Two when its released, as I'm guessing it will be invite only for the first while, so factor that into your thoughts around waiting time/availabilty.
I've had the Galaxy S4, HTC One M8 and Nexus 5 all within the last 5 months and overall the OPO is better than them all. Theres no added bloat, no difficulty/warranty issues unlocking the bootloader, solid stock CM and as many custom ROMs as you like and the battery life is fantastic. In terms of the nexus 5, its basically a nexus 6 for those who were underwhelmed by the nexus 6, in terms of large (without being too large) screen, great battery life (non 2k screen), decent camera and very reasonable price.

Motherboard faults, deliberate design?

With so many people needing to replace their motherboards, even in the Note Edge XDA forum and across other forums, well, everywhere, does anyone else think this could possibly be planned obsolescence on the part of Samsung?
Is it possible they have deliberately designed them to fail after a set period of time (This mostly occurs after the warranty period has ended) ?
I could understand if this was an issue due to numerous rom installs etc but it is also happening to people who have never rooted or flashed their phones.
I thought it was only happening to Note 4's but was thinking of buying a new Note Edge as I like the design and only want a phone with the stylus and a removable battery. So I had a look at the Note Edge forum on XDA. The same issue is happening with their phones too. I raised this issue with Samsung and when they advised it would cost me over $400 AU to replace the motherboard I was not impressed.
It would be more palatable to think it was an issue with the design of the phone but for it to almost always happen after the warranty period has expired... if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

That's why I hate updates.
They usually add butt loads of bloatware and drive your phone nuts.
The harder it works, the faster it burns out.

Bought the phone in late 2014. Still working fine and no issues on the MB side. Althogh i had to change the batteries 5-6 times during this period.

I received an update from Samsung. They've asked me to drop it off at a kiosk or service centre and the they will have a look at it so see if it is an issue with the motherboard (which it definitely is). If it is they "may provide me with a remedy". Not sure what that means but I am just happy they have said they will have a look at it
Thought I'd add, they know I bought the phone second hand so I wasn't sure if they'd even look at it. Really impressed with the service even if they don't repair it.
I just hope they don't offer me a newer Note, I just want my phone fixed. I'd hate a phone without a removable battery.

Keep Us Updated (or me), every detail. I know that its like pulling teeth to get a repair person to divulge details.... Would love to have a newer Note or even replacement.

My MB died due to too many apps 400+ and running very hot for 1 year. So be warned do not run it HOT. Replaced with new MB costing £150 in UK.

Samsung did agree to replace the motherboard, the only issue I had was I had purchased the note second hand and didn't have proof of purchase. I'd taken it into the Samsung kiosk and they determined it was a motherboard issue. It had actually turned off and would only boot into the Samsung recovery when I took it in.
About a week before this I had to call an ambulance urgently and the phone froze three times. I had to keep taking the battery out. I finally got through. I pointed out to Samsung that a family member could have died from this. That may have swayed them a little but again as I had purchased it second hand they would not touch it. The guy at the kiosk said it was because it could have been stolen, so yeh on top of me freaking out because I was trying to call an ambulance they then made me feel like I was a thief. No it was not stolen, in fact I also have a note 4 that I bought brand new but I gave my daughter that one when her Sony phone died.
I ended up buying a Note Edge second hand again as a new one was going to take up to November to get here (unless I paid a stupid amount of money for delivery and even then it could have taken 4 weeks). I'll end up buying a new motherboard if this one dies too, hell I may even just order one when I have the money so I have it spare.
BTW the Note Edge is way more awesome than the Note 4.
I now have a new battery cover, a fake Samsung battery cover case thing and a few screen protectors on the way, I don't think they are glass and the glass ones on eBay are a rip off. I'll be able to charge the phone on my Samsung note 3 dock and the spare battery at the same time. When I have some spare $ I'll grab another spare battery (I like to have 3 batteries in case one starts to swell and die).
I would have taken this further due to not being able to call the ambulance but our consumer laws say that you must have proof of purchase, besides I'm visiting the hospital every day working full time and trying to do the family house work & cooking so I don't have enough time. I'm also still really shaken up by what happened so it's probably better that I let it go.

Oneplus 7 Price increase?

just a quick question:
has it EVER happened, that oneplus increased the prices of a phone after it came out?
for example: oneplus 7 pro 8gb costs 760€ now, they sell Very Well and immediately sell out the whole stock. 1-2 weeks later the phone is available again but with higher price (e.g 800€ for same 8gb variant) because people are OBVIOUSLY loving the phone and are prepared to pay (even more).. This would be a **** move of course, but a wonderful business strategy..and it's not like it has never happened in the business world. The question is: could oneplus do such a thing? or did they ever do it? (I am closely watching\interested in this company only since 6t so I don't know it that well).

I'm guessing they can't afford to do so with the current model as it will hurt future sales. They will however incorporate the price hike in the "next model" release which most likely would be just a "limited edition" color or co-branding. That's what I would do business wise anyway...

I have had most OnePlus phones and I've never seen that happen.

No manufacturer in their right mind would do this. They know their cost to build/develop the device, and, understand their sales forecast, and how to price it from the release date. It is all part of the product cycle.

Current large phones trend & regarding batteries

Hello guys!
Do you have the problem like I do that I really would like to buy a fresh, new, fast phone with a new original battery, but looking at the current market I can not find any that suits to me? I am not talking about poor performance or lack of choice, but size... I'm really not interested in those enourmous 6"-6.5" phones because that big size is not comfortable for me, even though I have big hands.
Where is the era of 5"-5.8" phones gone? Do you think the large phones trend will ever stop?
In my situation I'm trying to look at used phones market, but this is also super problematic. If I find a used 5.5" device that suits me, it's battery is pretty much dead. I could buy a new battery and replace it without a problem, but there is no way I can find an original/genuine battery that will have a reasonable and solid life time. This is pathetic I think the dying 2-years batteries is the main trick that corporations use today to force us to change phone every 2-3 years ?

Well the way I've decided to combat this is by subscribing to Samsungs access program where I pay like 40 a month and in 9 months I can upgrade to the note 21 or S21 (if I choose to switch). I had the note 9 for 2 years and what I've noticed is I refuse to outright sell my phones for cheap rates after dropping 1200 plus on it. So now I've accumulated phones over the years since Samsung switched up and stopped allowing the early upgrade program with carriers. I got stuck with an s7 plus and 2 note 9s that are just collecting dust. I'm not selling either one for a few hundred dollars. And with insurance from Verizon, if anything happens to my phone I can just get a refurbished one sent to me and then I'll just trade that one back in when I'm ready to upgrade next year. This way I get the fresh new flagships every year and stop accumulating phones. The only downside is the fact that I wanted a phone with dual sim capabilities but Samsung only sells single sim in the US. I guess you can't have it all. Hopefully they eventually fix this issue and provide esim and/or dual sim capable phones in the future.
Now as far as smaller phones, I am not too sure. I believe all the major brands now have been offering smaller variations like the s20 e or fe or whatever its called. The only downside to this is I believe although they are cheaper then the full size flagships, they sadly do have less features and/or tech such as the cameras.
