Help - Plugged in not charging - down to 21% - Microsoft Surface

I need help, my SP3 will not charge and if the power is disconnected the computer will immediately shut off. A few months ago my battery life was around 60% now it's down to 21% and will not go up.
I've tried everything on the Microsoft community support pages, removing the drivers, doing the updates , booting to BIOS, different tricks in turning the computer on and off. I really think it needs something to wake the battery up, I don't think it's dead , it has to be a software/firmware issue but I don't know where to start to fix this thing. Any ideas??

Can you replace the Surface charging port. Go to Microsoft store

Fix for Charging Issue!
This will sound crazy but it does work! Do not plug the charger in to the wall! First plug the cable in to the Surface(without the charger in the outlet)! After the cable is plugged in to the Surface plug the wall wort in to the outlet. I know this sounds crazy but it does work! Once it is done in this order the Surface will begin to charge!
I can't remember where I found this fix but when I locate it again I will post a link in my reply!!!!
This comment I'm pasting here is from the link for the fix.
(problem solved. All you have to do is plug cord in to computer before you turn on the power, or plug it in. Works every time!!!)
Nevermind XDA will not let me post a link to the fix! Trust me this does work

trying to charge from dead flat with usb cable

hey
I have a himilaya and lost the official charger for it, a replacement was $80 so i got a usb sync/charger cable (new) off ebay for a 99c. i can tell the cable works fine but the problem i have is this: the xda2 is dead flat so i plug it into the pc to charge and the red light comes on for a few minutes. then it tries to set itself up and connect to the pc.
problem is it doesnt draw enough power from the usb port to stay running and it runs flat after about 15 seconds of its initial set up and im back at square one. i have tried turning it off whenever it tries to turn on and set itself up every few minutes to get more charge into it but iv been babysitting it like that for an hour and it still doesnt have enough charge to get through initial setup. it seems the backup battery takes ages to charge. does anyone have any ideas this is really frustrating lol.
ok for some reason with turning it off when it starts up i dont know how but it manages to use up all the charge cause after a while it just goes back to a red light and hard resets itself. please help i need to get it working again
Get a usb car charger adapter from proporta.com , or as a quick fix, uninstall activesync so your gadget will not try to power up during charging. You can reinstall after enough charge.
victor
i have been doing it on a computer without activesync, the pda always tries to start itself up on its own and start installing all the programs and customization crap cause since it was flat its hard reset. it alwys powers up as soon as it has enough charge to turn on

Can usb charging damage the baterry?

When i plug my samsung omnia to the usb port it starts charging automaticly. This can be turned off with a third party app but it is really a pain in the butt as it makes me change the registry every time.
Anyway, i read somewhere that nowadays batteries won't get damage if you start charging them even if they aren't fully drained. Something like "baterry memory effect is a thing from the past."
Is this true?
Thanks in advance!
No, USb charging is the best way to charge your phone according to sticky over in the Nexus One forum. It emits the least ammount of energy to your phone making it less damaging to the battery. Car charging is the worst due to such a fast and high volume transfer rate.
I would agree, usb charging is much better than using the mains and heaven forbid using a car charger.
The usb does not give out the full 5v and while this may be a problem for usb cd-dvd’s or usn hard drives it is an advantage to us as this has the effect of trickle charging the battery and if done correctly this will in time condition your battery.
Many years ago I had the old SPV E100 and this came with a desktop cradle and I used to leave my cradle at work and drop my phone in to the cradle and use the activesync remote control to respond to texts or ‘play’ with my phone.
The E100 would barley last a day on a full charge and the cradle could not charge directly and you had to plug the charger into the cradle to make it charge. Then posts started appearing stating that with a single wire you could make the cradle charge from usb and I quickly made this mod to my cradle and hey presto I was charging from usb while at work.
I did not realise at the time the benefits of usb charging but I used to put my phone on the cradle in the morning, take it out during lunch, plug it back after lunch and take off when I go home and I used to do this almost every day and after six months or so I noticed that I could take my phone off the cradle at 5:00pm on Friday and it would still be running by Sunday lunchtime and all through usb charging.
I think I was lucky as the battery would only last a day and if you did the same on a modern device with a battery that lasts say three or four days it may not work out the same. I now have the TG01 and you will see by the reviews it has a very low capacity battery and using the same kind of trick it seems to be doing the same, its early days but so far so good.
What about day to day random connecting the phone to the pc via usb?
What about day to day random connecting the phone to the pc via usb for any other purposes than charging? Like activesync?
I use to connect a few times a day for periods of 4 or 5 minutes and then disconnect, and i am afraid of batterry side effects.
Should i be worried?
Hi again, officially speaking it should not make any difference but I would avoid plugging in for such short periods of time.
If you have a newer HTC device you may be lucky enough to have an option in the power settings something like ‘disable charging while plugged into pc’ if you tick this box you can plug and unplug to your hearts content but you will not charge.
If you anticipate being plugged in for quite some time then disable this option (if you have it). The only other way to avoid this is to look on Ebay and you will find usb sync/charge leads but you will find some with two usb connectors. One for data only and one for power only so you can charge without syncing or sync without charging or plug both in and sync and charge.
Fortunately for me once its plugged in it tends to stay plugged in for the rest of the day.

Thanks you so much for replying back. I don't have that option you mentioned but i downloaded a app that turns off usb charge. But thats a pain to do because it makes me mess with the registry everytime i want to turn that option off.
I would use bluetooth but i can't make my phone sync with my pc with it. I even created a thread asking for help but i got no awnser back http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7257183#post7257183
I am a bit lost here. Anyways thank you for the help. At least now i know that it isn't that risky, although sometimes i need to connect my phone to the pc for text messaging or any other stuff that doesn't take more than 10 minutes.
Damn i would love to sync my phone with pc via bluetooth or wi-fi..
Noob here, not the OP, but thanks for this info. I had no idea car charging was a bad thing. Will make a habit of charging from the USB in the future.
Hi again, just read your other post and I remember when I got my Omnia I had to use bluetooth sync as it did not come with a cable.
I used this http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=3163 guide.
I know it says Windows XP but once I had my phone set and I plugged my bluetooth dongle into my work machine and set the comm port it worked and that was Windows 7 also.
On the downside syncing via usb will suck your battery pretty quickly (about the same as being on a call)

[Q] [HELP]Phone will not charge

Today my Triumph seemed to be draining the battery faster than normal, though I was also making a lot more calls than normal. I have a cable plugged into my PC at work which I plugged into my phone but the driver install window didn't pop up like it normally does and my PC's network connection got very slow. I unplugged it and my PC connection was fine again. I left my phone unplugged for the most part after that though I did plug it in once or twice. I don't think it was ever truly recognized by my PC at work today (it has worked before) though I'm not certain.
When I was about to go home I noticed my phone was off. I knew it was low on battery so I assumed that it had turned off due to low battery. It couldn't have been off any more than 30-60 minutes. I didn't think it should have turned off already for low battery yet though.
I plugged it into my car charger and my phone refused to turn on. About 20 minutes later i unplugged my phone and the red charging light was still on. I had to pull the battery. I then turned on my phone and it was working, but low on battery.
About 45 minutes later I drove home with my phone plugged in, but I didn't check to see if the charging light was on. The phone was still on. When I got home I tried plugging in the phone and I noticed that it was not charging. It still isn't. I have tried the following:
Restarting phone
Plug in while it is turned off (charge light comes on but not charging animation, must pull battery for light to go off. phone will not start while plugged in or charge light is on)
Try plugging into computer rather than wall
Try car charger
Swap battery to stock battery (I use an Anker battery rather than the stock. I haven't used my stock battery for a few weeks to a month. It should have been fully charged but only had less than 50%) and try everything again with same results
Right now I have my Anker battery in which was nearly dead (below 10%) plugged into the wall with it off hoping it will charge. My phone is mostly stock other than I rooted it using the b_randon14's method, installed b_randon14's tweak mod, and flashed in the Sprint PRL using a method from howard forums with the 60681 version. I had links but had to remove them due to not previously posting on this forum.
I noticed the usb cable is not solid in the prot on my phone, but it never was and doesn't seem any different. For example I can move the cable back and forth a little bit while plugged in. It remains plugged in when I do this and while the phone is off it knows it is plugged in obviously. Any ideas?
Ok... I left it plugged in while off for an hour then it started working... very odd. Nevermind then I guess, lol.
Saw this thread, was going to suggest that. Your issue seems to be one that happens across all sorts of devices that have rechargeable batteries, even Android phones (and especially $&!t MP3 players that you'll find at K-Mart). I once made the mistake of buying a $30 MP3 player that refused to turn on once its battery dropped to a certain level. Twice. From K-Mart, of course.
Thank goodness for returns.
I am still having issues and it is really frustrating. Sometimes it will charge when on, some times it won't. The only thing I think MIGHT be common between when it does and doesn't work is how much battery is left. I think it might work more often when the battery is closer to a full charge. What I often do is plug in the phone, shut it off, it will charge but charging animation isn't there and I cannot turn it on until the charging animation shows up. I think it only shows up when the phone is fully charge or close to it (I've only ever seen it when it is fully charged).
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of concrete information on this as i haven't had much time to troubleshoot and verify any of my suspicions. I do know that USB Debugging has nothing to do with it and clearing my battery statistics didn't have any affect either. This issue is very frustrating and I believe are all software based, not hardware.
Any ideas or pointers?
Out of curiosity, have tried a different USB cable? I know that you talked about switching chargers, and I couldn't tell if this was just the base unit and you plugged the same cable in or, if it was a completely different charger and cable.
I have a wall charger with a usb cable at my office, a wall charger with a (different) usb cable at my house, and a car charger with its own non detachable usb cable. All have the same issue.

[Q] iPAQ 110/111 turns on only when plugged in, battery is fine. HELP! Please!

I have an iPaq 111, part of the 110 series. It's been stored in a closet for over two years. I hooked a batter charger to the battery itself (outside of the device) to charge it up enough to be able to take a charge once I put it back inside the device.
Once I did that, it powered right up, and everything worked perfectly. Then I went to unplug it, and surprise to me, it shuts off.
I've tried EVERYTHING, HP doesn't even publish there ROM. Found a setup utility to download to my PC to access my iPAQ, but it's in German, and high school was a long time ago so it's hard to understand; but what I can understand enough is that it cannot find a device. Same goes with the extension I installed through HP's website, it only finds my HP computer.
I've plugged it into my computer and the light is GREEN, suprisingly, but it does not turn on. If I plug it into the AC power adapter, it DOES turn on, stays green, and once on the homescreen, shows battery at 100% (was 23% onwards today when I was charging it). My voltage meter shows about 4 volts coming from the battery. Contacts on all ends are clean. ROM issue? Yes, I have tried soft and HARD resets.
Any help will be much appreciated. Please please please! THank you!
Battery is not fine, its dead. The proof is the fact that on AC power it turns on, but not when connected to.USB. AC power has enough amps to directly power the device, USB does not. When connected to USB power is indirectly drawn, as the phone attempts to use battery power for operation while charging it at the sametime, thus lessening the total draw. It still however needs battery to work.
Basically, the battery is dead. By a new one of eBay.
icenight, THANK YOU for the reply, it was so quick. I have figured it was the battery, BUT:
I've checked the battery with a voltmeter and it shows over 4V- using my good Fluke. Also, when it's plugged in, it progressively showed the battery charging and it's now at 100%...
Are you still thinking it could be the battery? Not enough amps from the battery? I hate to sound cheap, but it's more about the wait- I want to eBay this iPaq since I don't use it and it keeps getting in the way!
Thanks again
iPaq still not working
New battery arrived. Still does the same thing. I've read around and it could be the ROM, but it wont stay on when plugged into the PC USB port. Computer sometimes makes a noise when I plug and unplug it though. Even put a homemade "in-line" power supply to it using a 5V 1.5A adapter. This allows it to stay on when plugged into the PC usb, but there is no communication. This thing is a pile of **** I tell ya.
Any help would be so much apprecaited. Thank you so much. I can barely get past these "captcha" thingys.
Regards,
Robert

Weird USB problem, phone dead

Last night I was getting ready to flash CM11 via adb sideload when I dropped my phone from less than 50cm and my computer suddenly stopped recognizing it.
I thought it was my USB cable or my Windows installation that was going crazy but when I tried to charge it, it just wouldn't. In fastboot, all i see is Battery OK but when I connect it to the wall socket, it doesn't show "Charging".
Battery is not full, it was around 20%.
When I power it off and connect it to the wall socket, the screen doesn't turn on, it just vibrates for a second and after that is totally dead. It charges, but it's totally dead and won't show the charging progress bar.
It's like the micro usb port is half-dead.
Any thoughts?
Yes man you night have broken one of the pins. You should try the wireless charging mod, I'll give you the link in a bit. But if you use your port a lot you should order a replacement online.
I saw a video on YouTube that recommended charging the phone with a higher amperage charger. I grabbed my Nook charger and left it overnight. When I woke up, it was 100% charged so then I connected it to the computer in fastboot mode and it finally showed "Charging" and could use adb.
I hope it's fixed...
