so, I have my phone on Sprint
checked in the settings, no update available
popped out Sprint SIM, inserted AT&T rebooted twice, checked update, voila PIE update OTA offered
after little bit of waiting and few clicks - all done, my Sprint PH1 Essential is now on Android 9 PIE
all seems to be running
recap:
*Sprint PH1, previously unlocked by method described here:
* inserted AT&T SIM
* reboot 2x (I just wanted to), got it provisioned and working
* checked, downloaded and installed OTA update A9/Pie
* phone upgraded without erasing anything, rebooted once
* while still on AT&T checked LTE and TXT, all works
* power off, swap SIM to Sprint
* power on, no problem, phone recognized Sprint and provisioned right away
* WiFi OFF, Sprint voice, data TXT all works
*WiFi back ON
awesome! got maybe one of first Sprint Android PIE!
side effect - screen gained deeper clarity and contrast, whoa! nice.
thank you Essential Team!
Android Pie on Sprint Essential phone
So I have an unlocked (bought on Amazon) Essential phone but because I am on Sprint it will not upgrade to Pie. I do not have access to another sim card from an alternate carrier so not sure how else I can upgrade.
Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks

Well I received my Essential a few days ago from Amazon. I never have yet inserted my sim card because I am not using it until my protectors (screen etc.) come. I updated to 8.1 over wifi and got a notice to upgrade to pie. I was downloading Pie and this is without any carrier sim attached. I am wondering if you try to do a factory default without sim inserted would that give you the ability to check for updates and install 9 pie without sim. Then once updated and a reset insert sim . Like you said you did buy it unlocked from amazon and not sprint.
have you gotten Wifi calling to work with Sprint on a device with Pie installed? I'm upgraded but am missing the "Update Emergency Address" option.
Sprint version of Essential phone using the same method but Verizon SIM and only rebooted once. Android 9 OTA showed up after checking update. Thanks OP.

I am not using WiFi calling. No idea if this works
I reverted back to 8.1 July and have it back. I'm guessin that's why no Sprint update to Pie.
I'm on spring and running pie...everything works straight out of the box for me...no issues setting up wifi calling, rcs works...I didn't get the ota but I always use fastboot anyway...just turn off wifi calling and try to reactivate it
Flashing via the computer works too if you don't have extra sims from different companies.

Personal opinion. I feel that 9.0 is solid and is equal to 8.1. Not better or worse.

I just got the OTA from Sprint last night. I have been checking at least once a day since release. So far so good. Haven't had any issues that I can see. I'll have to check wifi calling and other things people have mentioned.
Edit:. Seems my wifi calling was on by default...just haven't used the phone as you know...a phone lol.

Cons- No notch support, Pandora app control on Bluetooth devices currently does not work, and the UI is complete iPhone esk...do not care for the recents to app drawer layout either.
Pros- device runs a tad smoother and touch sensitivity is better.
All-in-all, I would agree but I am back on 8.1 and hopefully the next update will add notch support and Pandora BT app control will be fixed.

That's not the exact same problem if you're losing wifi. So far, only mobile data is dying for me.
It looks like Tmo or HTC fubar'd the radio with this release.
If you have WiFi problems, get WiFi fixer from the market, it will say it was unsuccessful then reboot. it should work, after, even though it said unsuccessful.
Still not okey.................

I tried the way.
My Wifi is still completly dead. Are there any other ways?
WiFi working fine for me. Will test data tomorrow when back in coverage.
Well, I spoke too soon. My wifi is unreliable too. It seems to disconnect very frequently when the phone is sleeping even though I have 'always on' checked and have toggled it off and back on just to make sure.
thanks a lot tmo. I had a reliable radio before this update. I should have listened to that little voice telling me to wait.
Here's an exchange I just had with tmo support.
Customer Chat
%Mary G: I apologize for the inconvenience. What is the issue with the update? I can help with that.
michael harrison: I've had my phone almost two weeks and had very reliable 4G (Dallas area) and mostly reliable wifi. The only problem with wifi is that sometimes I'd get back home and it wouldn't automatically connect. I'd have to turn wifi off and back on. Except for that, the radio was solid.
Bluetooth was also reliable though the range was only about 20'
Since the update, 4G, wifi and bluetooth are very unreliable.
Mobile data drops out for no reason (I can be sitting in one location and it will completely disappear), wifi is turning off or losing the connection frequently while the phone is sleeping (I have the option to keep wifi on always turned on) and bluetooth has a range of about 4'
%Mary G: I see that our Engineering is working on this issue for the HTC One S. If you want to go back to the old version, we can do master reset for the phone.
%Mary G: For that step, I apologize, at this time we are not able to provide additional assistance for your issue via live chat. Please contact one of our Technical Care representatives at 1-800-937-8997 from a phone other than your T-Mobile handset. Please select the appropriate voice prompt and your call will be forwarded to a representative for assistance. Thank you for choosing T-Mobile, we value your business!
Master freakin' reset?!
I noticed that my 4G seems to go to sleep and does no work until I for a lack of a better word "Wake up the phone"
One more for the radio-problem pile...
It appears that if I'm on Wifi and I start a GPS app (like my tracks) and drive out of wifi range, I'll never get a mobile data connection. Wifi cut off (at least, the icon disappeared) but even closing the app (and verifying that the gps icon went away) doesn't result in mobile data coming on line.
I had to go into airplane mode and back out. The I ended up with a 4g connection.
Is it just me or does the throughput speed now suck AFTER the update?
I used to get 12-14mbps down and 6-7 up, and now im getting 4.5 down, 1.5 up.
Seriously T-Mobile? How hard is it to release something that WORKS?

Funny you blame T-Mobile as they are NOT software developers. You need to be pointing that finger at HTC.
can't shut off the phone after update
I got my new HTC One S yesterday and the first thing I did after activating it was a manual check for updates.
I knew I should have checked the forums first but I'm an update junkie.
I guess I have been running CM7 for too long and I forgot about how bad the HTC OTA to 2.3.3 on my Inspire 4G was.
I haven't seen a post yet about not being able to turn off the phone after the update.
I press and hold the power button on the top and the Shut Down/ Airplane mode/ Restart menu comes up.
I select Shut Down and the phone does what looks like a Fast Boot restart instead of shutting down. I checked the settings and confirmed that Fast Boot is turned off.
What happens is after I select Shut Down I get the T-Mobile good buy animation and then I briefly see the previous shut down menu and then I get the T-Mobile Android rocket animation and then I'm back in the OS. No black screen, no white screen with the HTC logo and it all happens very quickly.
I tried a Restart and that does a normal full shut down and restart where I get the good buy animation and the screen goes black for a second then I get the white screen with the HTC logo then the rocket animation then the OS. All very normal looking.
Holding down the power button for about 10 seconds to force a power off does shut down the phone but it turns back on 3 seconds later with a normal looking start up.
This is a brand new phone that had the factory shipped ROM and no apps even installed. It was able to be powered off before I installed the OTA.
I tried this with the case on and off to make sure it wasn't the case putting pressure on the buttons.
This isn't a huge deal as I don't normally leave my phone off but I can't take this on an airplane as some carriers still make you turn off all electronic devices during take off and landing.
Update: I was going to take eminembdg advice and go to a Tmo store and try to get the phone replaced after work today. But after showing the nifty shutdown reboot bug to a few friends the phone now actually shuts down correctly and stays off. I guess it's like when you take your car to the mechanic because its making this funny noise and then it stops making the noise just as you pull up in front of the shop.
My data speed got slower too.

That just makes me mad. Why would Samsung do stuff like this. I am on TMobile but I'm pretty sure the same applies. I just got my phone and it was on Lollipop. Imediately I reset it, Android went straight to updating. This is before I even got a chance to set up my google account.
I kinda regret getting this phone, but also don't. Its a swiss army knife. A very efficient one
Same problem here.. just updated to lollipop 5.1.. I really want to downgrade back to 4.4.4... battery drains so fast.. this firmware is so buggy.. overheating with no apps in background.. tried to do a factory reset and wipe cache.. still, issues were not resolved.. damn!
This lollipop updates makes my phone kinda useless.. The battery depletes so fast without doing anything. I do hope we can downgrade back to 4.4.4... Graphical intensive games became laggy.
This lollipop has many bugs to choose from lol!
So is 5.1 worse than 5.0.1? I'm very happy with 5.0.1 so far. No problems. But maybe I should awoid updating to 5.1?
Sent fra min SM-N9005 via Tapatalk
How can you even avoid updating your phone? I got my T Mobile phone yesterday and before I could finish creating my Google account, Android restarted the phone in Odin and installed an update. I am still on 5.0.1 but I do not want any more updates.

Yeah Samsungs motto really pisses me off. Launch a phone and make it supreme on the Android flavor it came on. Completely ditch phone once its been launched and move onto next phone. Let Google figure out what to do with Android updates.
I srsly have to find a way to downgrade. The retard that owned my phone before I got it updated his to Lollipop
I just returned my edge and got the note 5. Good luck to all here. I hope everything gets figured out for all of us.
5.1 seems really good on the note 5. I'm getting two days battery usage.

I had boot loop. Fixed it on my T Mobile Note Edge by booting into recovery and doing a factory reset. I am now on 4.4.4 native.
And yeah, I figured you might do that. Samsung's model at its finest is to release a phone with native Android flavor and then just abandon it immediately. So for us suckers that keep buying their crap, we get stuck with updates or no updates. This Edge is prbly the last Samsung phone I'm ever gonna buy.
If only Microsoft or another Android vendor would make a phone with a curved edge and a stylus
Recovery mode I used was the stock Samsung recovery

I'm on Sprint, and never got the March update. It is letting me download the April update
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Didn't believe at first lol had to check thx.
If you look at Essential's builds page you'll notice that there is not a Sprint version of the March update. I suspect that Sprint would not approve / accept / allow the updates. I'm hopeful that the April update will fix the Bluetooth issues introduced by the Jan or Feb update. I've also experienced significant loss of signal strength since the Jan and Feb updates, which I believe are tied to the modem security patches in those updates, and I'm hoping April fixes that as well. If not, I'll be downgrading back to December's update. I have LITERALLY gone from "bulletproof" data connections all over my City to routinely losing data connection, and my average speeds at home and work have dropped significantly. I know it's the build and not the network because I have another PH1 on Sprint that has none of these issues after being downgraded to the last Oreo build...
Edited to add: The April update is taking much longer to install than the monthly updates normally do. It took over 30 minutes to complete the app upgrade process today. Fingers crossed that this means there are some big fixes under the hood.
---------- Post added at 09:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 PM ----------
Uodate: after installing the April update and rebooting once to get a fully "clean slate", I ran Speedtest... WOW!
So, good news and bad news for me, and likely anyone on Sprint. When I ran speed tests last Friday (same app, same location, same phone, on the February Pie update) I was getting download speeds of about 12mbps and upload speeds of about 10mbps on average. After the April uppdate I am now getting download speeds averaging around 75 to 80 Mbps (!!!!!!!!!), but my upload speeds have dropped to an average of about 2.5mbps....
So, whatever the April update contained has helped and hurt. Now, to see if it has fixed my intermittent Bluetooth problems... Fingers crossed.
The speed test at the very bottom was last Friday. Everything else above it is today, after installing the April update.
Yes, upgrade (74MB) installed & working, but took forever to optimise the apps, I was sweating a little since I'm in Australia & can't send phone back to Essential if major issue.
Update includes improvements to minimum brightness & volume which is good ... especially if you like to use your phone in the middle of the night without waking your beloved! ?
Note that for Sprint users the file size (if received OTA) is about 96mb (approx, my recollection may be slightly off). My wife's is on AT&T and I noticed the size difference when updating her phone. Hers also seemed to optimize apps a lot faster than my Sprint PH1. It would appear that Sprint bundled something else in with the update (BT / modem fixes? March's Android security patches that we missed? Who knows...)

Can't shutdown with April '19 update
When I tried to shut the phone off to swap SIMs with my other phone, the PH-1 got to the part where it bumps the vibrator and hung vibrating for 2-3 seconds and then re-booted. Argh! Bluetooth is still borked... I have to shut off Bluetooth and restart before my Jabra 65t's will connect and even then it's iffy.
That's weird. No shutdown problems like that with mine. I've not noticed any Bluetooth problems either yet (but don't really know what I'm looking for with that, last build seemed to work OK for me too, I only use Bluetooth for pairing headphones)
And as usual I still don't have any of these weird problems. Oh well maybe the next one.
I had to go back to the original slot.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately, I did flash back to stock without rooting, and still had no LED notification.
To be honest, it only shows up one time after fresh stock ROM flash, and never show up again.
There's no LED notification when missing phone call, SMS/MMS, but......the LED is blink ONLY when I have voice mail waiting....that's pull my hair off.

Yes, it would not react to single touch. I would have to put my finger, release, and then put back for it to recognize. Now it's single touch like it was in the beginning.
Agreed. I received the update and the fingerprint sensor seems to be working better. The auto-brightness however.... WOW. it's terrible. Slow to react to changes in light, and dims far too much. They should add a way to control the dimming. Something like a percentage of the current profile they have e.g. maintain the max brightness, but if the coding would reduce brightness by 80%, then I would want to select a 50% setting, so the effective reduction in brightness would be only 40%. Trying to read my phone in a store or a restaurant is a royal pain. Who did the real-world testing of this functionality? Some cartoon character that has flashlights for eyeballs?
Anyone having issues sending or receiving MMS after the new update. I can reset my device and is okay for about an hour and then stops sending or receiving MMS messages. I have not wiped with this new update and that is my next step, just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this by chance.

It's a huge network flaw that T-Mobile has. You either have to turn private dns off, or use Google messages. Either one solved the problem
Well the update broke the floating bar mod that I had. No longer does the screen record, screenshot edit etc. Only has quick contacts. Anyone else?
I used to be able to video chat with my friend with a S9 phone, after the update , today she tried to video chat with me and she couldn't, I noticed the native Video chat icon is no longer on the contact , it now has the Duo Call instead. Ugh..
Update? My phone still says it's on the April 1st update.
Placebo effect for Fp sensor. Back to having to double touch before its recognized. ?
Anybody on the April 1st security software having 5g connectivity issues? I have been having issues for over a month and a half. Got them to send a new phone after factory reset and new sim didn't work. Got the new phone today and everything was working great until it updated to the April 1st security patch. It hasn't updated to the latest update yet, but I had that update on my previous device and the issue was persistent still even after. So something on that specific software is screwing up my 5G to where I can't use my phone unless I'm on Wi-Fi.

I'm in June patch now, but I had no connectivity issues when I was in April. If you turn 5g off do you have data in 4glte?

That's pretty much where I'm at. I'm having to run with no 5g. They sent me a new phone again, and when it arrives I'm going to try to avoid the update for as long as possible.
Did they pull this update? I got it right away on my first phone but I had to exchange that one and the new one still hasn't received it.

Possibly, I have it. But it's not listed on the T-Mobile update page.
T-Mobile latest firmware
Does anyone have KDZ file of latest firmware (10R)?
I can not perform OTA update.
Mine would also not pull down the OTA. I had to use LGUP.
Le2125 on Nameless, however previous le2127 (converted to global) also had this while on OTA update....
Verizon network.
Every other day I'll suddenly get immediate dropped call when trying to dial out, anyone calling goes straight to VM.
Phone restart fixes it for a day or so and then it happens again.
Any ideas on where to start?

Custom roms are just that. Imperfect. I love using Lineage 20 I'm also on op9 global Na unlocked. It's almost perfect really though. Rcs working flawless and network. I find some small issue and msm back. Anything that is still receiving builds by the manufacturer is usually better than custom. Now after we stop getting sec patches and updates . I will indeed go to Lineage if device is still working. We still get A14 though. And A13 isn't bad at all rooted and pixel dialer features !!
This was the case with the OTA update as well.
I actually switched to the custom ROM hoping maybe there was something different.
