Auto Brightness not as good...until now! - OnePlus 6 Guides, News, & Discussion

So I was messing around with my phone after installing Action Launcher. I always like to go into the "Launcher Activities" and see what's in there to tweak. On this phone I found an activity called: Content Adaptive Backlight Settings
When you assign this to a gesture (Multi Finger Swipe Down, for example) it opens up a menu for this option. There is a check box to "Enable Content Adaptive Backlight". I guess by default, this box is checked which REadjusts your backlight for your screen based on the content being displayed on your phone. This is completely separate from the Auto Brightness feature (so unchecking/disabling this feature does NOT disable Auto Brightness...just FYI).
Now, there is options to adjust the "Visual Quality Level" of the Content Adaptive Brightness (ex: Low, Medium, High, Auto). It appears mine was set to "Auto" by default when it was enabled.
However, I completely disabled this option and tested the backlight settings/function. For me it seemed to auto-adjust the brightness much more efficiently and quicker. I was having issues with the auto-brightness not working at times, or showing it was at the minimum brightness but the damn screen was still blinding me. This seems to have fixed that issue so I thought I would share my findings.
Let me know how it works for you.

where is this 'launcher activities' found? I can't find in any settings in Action Launcher

Open Action Launcher Settings
Go to Shortcuts (Gestures & Actions) option
I chose the "Swipe Down" > Multi-Finger Gesture
Tap on "Shortcut" at the top of the screen
Click on "Activities"
Scroll down till you see "Content Adaptive Brightness Settings"
Let me know if you run into any issues. I'm sure there's another way to access these options without having to go through the gesture settings but that's how I did it on my phone.

dude that's pretty sweet, I had no idea about this launcher, insta bought PRO, thanks!

I know this from Nexus 6p days. It's also working with Nova launcher.
Edit: you didn't even need the pro version.

Did anyone notice any difference?

This is true. Nova Launcher does have the "activities" option as well (just like Action Launcher). Seeing as Nova is my go-to launcher of choice, I've been aware of this option for quite some time as well. But since I was using Action Launcher at the time of discovery I figured I'd just post that info.

I'm unable to locate the correct activity to assign to the gesture in Nova Launcher. I've scrolled the 15 available Nova Activities but found nothing related with Adaptive Brightness.
Would you be so nice to point me to the correct activity to assign to the gesture?
Cheers!

You can also add this activity to the quick tiles bar with the app Tiles, which is free today. So no need for a second launcher.
Thanks for this tip, I hope my auto brightness will work again like the 5t which had a much better auto brightness.

I've been using my phone for the past couple days with this option unchecked. It's most noticeable at night if you use your phone in a low light environment. Another way you can "sort of" test it is to shine a light on the light sensor. You'll notice it gets brighter quicker and dims right back to where it was when the light is removed. For me, with the option checked the auto-brightness was slow to react to changes in light and it wouldn't always go back to the dimmest setting, or where it was prior to getting brighter.
All-in-all, it seems to be faster now, now that the screen doesn't have to auto adjust the brightness based on ambient light levels as well as readjust the brightness based on what the screen is displaying.

I guess the activity you are mentioned "Enable Content Adaptive Backlight" is some sort of API (sorry if thats wrong , I dont know anything about andriod programming) , and used in couple of apps where the brightness gets cranked to maximum for viewing. Many apps which generate QR codes use this like Xender, OnePlus contacts app , Shareit etc. Even QuickPic gallery has option of turning maximum when viewing pictures.
Interesting how it works with auto brightness function though.

It does say backlight as that is for LCD screens as they have a backlight but the OP6 is an Amoled screen which has no backlight but each pixel powers on and off so maybe that is why there really isn't much difference when using that option on an Amoled screen.
I'm just using High Brightness Mode from flar2 in the play store. It increases the max brightness by 42% over the max brightness that OnePlus as set for this phone. Though you will need to install his EX kernel I believe to take advantage of it.

After i disabled that option, my display goes crazy in sun! It's flickering all the time. Changed back to stock now.

Wow, really? I haven't had that issue. Are you using any brightness mods on your phone to increase the brightness level like @Eric214 has?

Thanks for the tip ! I'll test that right now.

[APP] Different auto-brightness

I was tired with the stock autobrightness sensor always setting screen too bright for my eyes - i read in the darkness at night. So i wrote this little thing (thanks to britoso).
Right now it has 4 different brightness settings depending on the ambient light.
as always - created for NEXUS One, tested on FroYo. Needs ROOT
Known issues - not smooth brightness change..
Donno how it will affect the battery life, i may change the sensor sensitivity in the future.
pre-alpha
Comments welcome.
p.s. remember to disable system auto-brightness in settings.
Just installed, I'll report back!
Sounds awesome! Will check it out after work
I will also give it a try
I have te opposit feeling i don't like auto-brightness because it's always to low for me (next to the ipod my screen is lot darker in same light condition)...
I will look into your app later today but maybe an idea to have a slider for adjusting it higher or lower by yourself to fit everyones needs
Will try later, but sounds good to me!

hm ye i think ill add some customization so u can select preferred brightness for different lights.. its not hard just need time..
also i still havent decided on how much "steps" should it have..
right now its 4 - full daylight, in-home light, dark-room light, full darkness..
i can set it to a max of 255 steps.. but i guess its not needed + i think that the more sensitive the sensor is the more battery it consumes.. although im not sure
Great idea. Runs fine.
some suggestions:
1) add a progress bar (0..max_value) set to the current sensor value. Alongside the digital value.
2)show the current brightness setting next to or below the sensor value. A progress bar with 4 stops will look good here too.
Its nice to see my android react to its surroundings
Alright unfortunately doesn't work on CM 5.0.8 which is also written above
Can it be customized for it or not?

I've not been successful with the max_brightness setting for the led yet.
Does not matter how many apps open their own shell, its important that the shell is reused though.
The desire path should be similar to the path for LEDs. /sys/devices/platform/leds-microp/....

hi,
just ran across your app.
Do you think there is a way to lower the brightness below androids default low setting? It is still to bright for me at night, so would be great to have something like a "night-mode". i do not want to disable auto-brightness, that works fine for me, it is just the minimum setting that bothers me.
this might end up being very nice after a few updates....brightness level on Android NEVER goes to minimum level even at night which results in useless battery drain.
hm, so who can do this? A simple widget that sets brightness to the absolute minimum...
you can use scripter (needs root, busybox) to run a simple command that does it.
Code:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/virtual/leds/lcd-backlight/brightness
max brightness is 255

make sure auto brightness is off.
There's an app that was posted in this forum which I just found free in the Market
App Title: Dimmer (Night Mode)
Dev: geekyouup
Nothing automatic about it. Opening the app sets brightness to 10. Open again and it says brightness=90.
Sorry if this doesn't help, but seemed relevant.
This app definitely has potential. Would love the ability to fully customize the levels and cut off points (let the user define the number of brightness levels, the brighness %, and the light sensor ranges). Would be PERFECT if it also integrated with settings profiles or simply had a low battery brightness default option. Because right now I use settings profiles to lower the brightness when I reach low battery and unfortunately right now it looks like your app overrides that.

[APP 2.2+] Screen Filter - Make your screen EXTREMELY dark

Screen Filter can lower your screen brightness to extremely low levels*, to help prevent eyestrain during the night.
Includes notification controls for Jelly Bean devices.
NO ads, minimal permissions.

The app icon itself acts as a widget to toggle the filter on/off.
If you set the brightness too low and can't see anything, press the volume buttons to revert back. (Works for settings screen only)
*This app can blackout the screen if you get to 0%, useful for people who like to "listen" to Youtube videos at night with AMOLED screens.
Changelog:
Oct. 27
- You can now use the volume buttons for precise adjustment.
- When set to 0%, turning the screen off will automatically pause Screen Filter.
Oct. 25
- Fixed bottom of screen getting cut off on smaller screen phones.
Oct. 23
- Fixed brightness reset bug.
- Code optimizations, app now starts faster.
Oct. 22 - [New Option] Allow going below 20% brightness. (Now disabled by default)
Oct. 21 - [New Feature] If you set the brightness too low, you can now use the volume buttons to revert back.
Oct. 20 - Added Traditional Chinese translations.
Oct. 19 - Initial Release.
Works well except for the part when I set it to to minimum brightness. Perhaps, a little warning pop up would be nice

Yup I noticed that happen too.
Turns out I didn't use a service with a high enough priority, so android system was killing the service whenever it felt like it needed more RAM....
I upped the priority in the update, and I haven't encountered any brightness spikes :fingers-crossed:, but I'm guessing it could happen if system was VERY low on RAM

What are the advantages over the original ScreenFilter by haxor industry?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
Does it suffer from the same "issue" of being unable to press Install while installing an APK? It's a google feature not to be able to hijack the button with an overlay, but it's a bit annoying nonetheless to get blinded when installing apps at night.

I created this app because I wanted the notification controls that the original screen filter didn't have. You can can try the app yourself to see if you find any advantages. It's completely free, even without ads.
Yes, all filter apps suffer the APK install problem. However, the notification controls work pretty well here. Pause it, press install, then resume.

Ambient Display not working

The ambient display feature does not appear to be working for me, or it at least not very well. I have it turned on in settings under Display, and whenever I get a notification the screen will turn on for like two seconds, and then it turns back off. When I pick up the phone, tap the screen, shake it etc, it does absolutely nothing, the screen remains off. There is no way for me to know I have a notification other than the really faint LED light at the top that blinks occasionally. Is there something I'm missing?
same with me
Not working for me either. They're sending me a new one.

In the settings menu it says ambient display comes on when you receive a notification, in the Pixel help docs it says it comes on when you get a notification or pick up the phone. I wonder which is correct.
I don't believe it works this way anymore. Why the Pixel is missing the feature is beyond me.
My 5x on 7.1.1 Dev preview has lift to "check"(wake) notifications now under the Moves settings. With that disabled and ambient display enabled it works the same as the Pixel currently does. 7.0 and below we just enabled ambient display setting and it worked as we all are familiar with.
Huge step backwards!
Let´s hope they bring it back with an update soon. (before a custom rom will)
Wake on proximity sensor really rocks.
I just got done chatting with Google's tech support people, and they told me that my ambient sensor is broken and are offering me a replacement Pixel. I'm not sure if this is accurate though, because that would mean that everyone's ambient sensor is broken.
From what I understand this is working as intended however they will be adding double tap to wake in a future update so that'll make ambient display much more usable.

Can confirm I haven't seen a Pixel that has an ambient on screen, nor is there a setting for it anywhere.
I've made my new pixel bearable again by using gravity screen on/off in the play store. Still goes back to"normal" after 15 minutes of idle....but for the most part it's similar to any phone I've used in the past three years now.

Wake up screen home button
What i would like to see is an app that wakes up/ unlocks my Note 5 screen when is turned off. And that doesn't effect the battery that much, like 5-6 percent all day usage. Thnx
Thats not possible anymore unfortunately.
Works great but itd be nice to have a quick toggle to turn this function on or off easily without having to open the app as it interferes with fingerprint verification. I see the blacklist option but I haven't been able to get that option to work, and I tried multiple apps that required verification.
Thanks for pointing that out. Found the bug. will be fixed in next release. Uploading soon.
No blacklist needed for that
I'll definitely keep an eye for the update, I went ahead and got pro cause I really like this app VS other similar ones as there are more options.. And I think having blacklist is better than having to need to toggle on and off
How different is it from the app finger touch
It is way way slower than fingertouch service app.

I like this a lot more than the other one, no burst of vibration on even half a second touch.
One down side is vibration is not consistant, sometimes I get a single vibration and other times dont get vibration at all, which I much prefer.
Nice work nevertheless.
This works great thanks, can i ask you what icon pack you are using in the above picture, your setup looks great, many thanks

You dont even need to blacklist in new version. You can authenticate in browser or similar and after this easyHome will kick in again automatically.

I like this a lot more than the other one, no burst of vibration on even half a second touch.
One down side is vibration is not consistant, sometimes I get a single vibration and other times dont get vibration at all, which I much prefer.
Nice work nevertheless.

You can disable vibration in the easyHome. I dont get any on my S7 here then.

easyHome was created over 1,5 jears ago. It has gained lots of features and functionality over this time and works pretty flawless currently.
You can use long press actions, haptic feedback, blacklist apps and authenticate in browser or similar without problems.
So far the new update seems to be alot better, I haven't been able to go through all of the verification needed apps to make sure but my most important ones are working.
I personally like this app over fingertouch because of the hold to launch an action, and also having the feedback option to be able to discern when a proper action was attempted or not, is a big plus for me. Maybe not haptic feedback but having sound feedback is nice for doing the long command.
Fingertouch works great too. Having a nougat quick tile is nice for when things aren't working properly. But although any tap on the sensor will go to home, since it uses your setup fingerprint signature for a reference in some way, if the finger your using isn't one setup in your system it will vibrate like a failed fingerprint attempt. I only have (1) thumbprint setup for verification in my phone but I don't always use that setup thumb to tap to go home. So I was constantly getting an error vibration and it threw me off. Also with fingertouch, you have to toggle on and off when needing to use fingerprint verification since it doesn't have a feature that will allow you to do both actions at the same time.
Yes, but i have to buy it... Other app is free and does the same.

Basic funtions are also free here plus you get a blacklist option.
And 1,49€ for the full version is really not too much i hope.
Fingetouch is a great app too. You luckily have the choice on android
Yes, they are. It is a good app. I don't know why, but today it restarted my s7 edge for 2 times. Never had a restart in a year by phone itself. I uninstalled it and it is ok. :/

Using easyHome since i created it and never had a reboot so far...
Yeah, dont know what happened. Maybe some conflict in processes. Your app is great. Cheers.

I've been using this app very heavily the last two days as I'm off of work for a short period. Once I installed the update in the OP , I noticed that the only real issue I've had at all, is sometimes if I enter into either the Google app or Chrome but on e I enter those programs easyhome no longer works, it shows it running in the notifications but untill I turn my screen off and right back on, the easy home function doesn't work.. I don't have that problem at all if I try to enter in samsung Internet beta.. Only really an issue when using GA, otherwise I use samsung net.
I had another little hiccup trying to verify a purchase on Google play but I'd imagine that the nature of the beast when turning the senor into a capacitive button. I went to purchase an app and it immediately prompted me to use my worded password cause fingerprint wasn't available at that time. I closed easyhome and then I was able to use my print.
I recently started using easyhome and a double tap to wake app to save my ADD button presses and i really like both
When I open folder from home screen, start an app within folder, and touch home button, this takes the screen back to the folder, not back to the home screen.
UPDATE
Samething when I repeat the above procedure, from app drawer folder instead.
Just wondering, is this intended?

Cometin
What is Cometin
Cometin is a free*, growing collection of tweaks and tricks to optimize your productivity and improve the Android experience.
More information
I can create a separate app for every idea I have. But why shouldn't I put everything in 1 app?
Google announced Dynamic Modules at the IO in 2019
With dynamic features you can split an app into several parts. This is exactly what Cometin is.
Cometin is a growing collection of tricks and tweaks for your Android device, split into modules.
This way you only download the features that you want to use and save your storage space.
Available modules (with some small descriptions)
• Ambient display
bring a customized Ambient display, Always-on-display and wave to wake to your device
• App locker
Lock apps behind a passcode or pattern
• Better rotation
Forces every app to be compatible with every orientation including 180 degrees
• Caffeine
Keep your screen on for a certain amount of time
• Cometin Sync
Sync notifications, and notes between phones and desktops
• Darker brightness
Go below the minimum brightness by applying a dark overlay on top of your screen
• Flip to shhh (beta)
Flip your phone face down to silent notifications (except alarms)
• Heads-up
Hide head-up notifications
• Immersive
Hide statusbar, navigationbar or both
• Parallel
Create a work profile to seperate personal and work
• Remap assistant
Execute a different action when opening the assistant
Is this safe?
Yes! All modules are only served from the Google Play Store, all modules are scanned by Google Play Protect so nothing to worry about!
Installing modules:
The installation of modules is done immediately, and you can use the module immediately after installation.
Updating modules:
Installed modules are automatically updated together with Cometin. No hassle with separate files!
Removing modules:
Module uninstalls do not occur immediately. That is, the device uninstalls them in the background in the next 24 hours.
Request for new features:
Requests for new features are always welcome! However, I cannot promise anything about the actual arrival of these features.
Request your features via my support ticket system. This way you can keep track of the status of features.

I have enabled Better rotation & Caffeine modules. Both are working fine. Thanks to developer for this great app.
Will test other modules too and provide feedback for any improvements.

Thanks for the app.
I've enabled Ambient Display module. When I receive a notification, screen wakes up showing the stock lockscreen and after a second lag, the Ambient Display shows up.
Using on Moto g4 play with Pixel Experience ROM 9.0

Always on display
this app is awesome! i turned on Ambient Display on my Pixel 3xl; is there any way i can have always on display with the new customized display? Right now, i only see it whenever i get a notification.
Nice app OP. Is there network speed indicator that show download and upload speed in notification in future? Mine using mia1 stock rom, if this app can achieve that i would be happier coz no need to use edexposed anymore
When I remapped assistant, it broke calling up the Google Assistant
When I remapped Google Assistant, it broke it. Google Assistant can no longer be summoned by my voice. Is this a bug? Pixel 3 Android 10.
Nice idea! For now just testing ambient display.
Would you consider adding the option to unlink ring and notification volumes? Linked behaviour is very annoying.
Thanks again for you work!
I'm trying out Ambient display on my tablet and I'm not sure I'm using it right. It's enabled, and I've customized it, but the ambient display doesn't turn on my screen when I get a notification. Is it also possible for me to make the ambient display show when I open the cover of my tablet (my case is one of those kinds that have a flap to cover to the front).
Like the app lots - do you think adding an always on to the ambient display might be a good idea for anyone with an amoled screen but no native option?
Like oneplus owners?
Like me... ?
Hello
First of all thank this application. It is essential for me.
I've enabled Ambient Display module. I need when I'm studying to get notifications on the lock screen and see a header of them.
Now when a notification arrives there is a small lag when you press on the screen to enter.
It would be great to be able to configure the time that these notifications are on the screen, as well as the position in the same and the amount of notifications that one needs.
Best regards and thanks again!
Reporting after a couple of days of testing.
Just used the ambient display and it looks fantastic.
Works everytime too.
Apart from the lag that others have noted, i noticed 2 other issues:
a) when this is enabled, screen dimming & screen off seems to be forced. I've noticed the default time reverting to 15 seconds. Even if there is activity on the screen, it still forces the screen dimming and turning off.
b) there seems to be a noticeable increase in battery drain.
If I uninstall the app will it uninstall all modules right then?

I've also noticed screen off time reverting to 15 seconds. Is Ambient Display working fine?
Using the Cloud Dashboard and I noticed Microsoft's "Your Phone" application which connects my Windows computer with my phone no longer connects. Does the Cloud Dashboard preempt this connection? Both applications show my phone's (Pro 7) notifications. Your Phone also gives easy access to photos, allows for SMS messaging from a Windows computer and, with the next Windows feature update, will allow for calling from a computer via a phone. I'd like to keep both application up and running.

The display of ambient display works well. The lag issue that others have mentioned, exists. Due to ambient display however, i see some quirks with forced screen locking etc
