Ambient Display not working - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

The ambient display feature does not appear to be working for me, or it at least not very well. I have it turned on in settings under Display, and whenever I get a notification the screen will turn on for like two seconds, and then it turns back off. When I pick up the phone, tap the screen, shake it etc, it does absolutely nothing, the screen remains off. There is no way for me to know I have a notification other than the really faint LED light at the top that blinks occasionally. Is there something I'm missing?

same with me

Not working for me either. They're sending me a new one.

I believe that display should turn on when you get the phone in your palm.

Pretty sure that is not the case on the pixel. Only on other phones. This was mentioned in the reviews

Really? It's got to be a bug. I can't imagine they would intentionally design something to be completely useless.

Tech support told me working as intended but didn't believe it himself and is supposed to have a higher level tech call back. I told him it makes this phone useless in a meeting where you don't look down right away or in a car mount because you cant unlock it. What a step backwards...might return for moto z instead...trying to last the weekend

+1 @Kodiak1013 for me. AD isn't working as intended. The only time it's worked properly for me is in the Google support chat session.

In the settings menu it says ambient display comes on when you receive a notification, in the Pixel help docs it says it comes on when you get a notification or pick up the phone. I wonder which is correct.

I don't believe it works this way anymore. Why the Pixel is missing the feature is beyond me.
My 5x on 7.1.1 Dev preview has lift to "check"(wake) notifications now under the Moves settings. With that disabled and ambient display enabled it works the same as the Pixel currently does. 7.0 and below we just enabled ambient display setting and it worked as we all are familiar with.

Huge step backwards!
Let´s hope they bring it back with an update soon. (before a custom rom will)
Wake on proximity sensor really rocks.

I just got done chatting with Google's tech support people, and they told me that my ambient sensor is broken and are offering me a replacement Pixel. I'm not sure if this is accurate though, because that would mean that everyone's ambient sensor is broken.

From what I understand this is working as intended however they will be adding double tap to wake in a future update so that'll make ambient display much more usable.

Can confirm I haven't seen a Pixel that has an ambient on screen, nor is there a setting for it anywhere.

I've made my new pixel bearable again by using gravity screen on/off in the play store. Still goes back to"normal" after 15 minutes of idle....but for the most part it's similar to any phone I've used in the past three years now.

That just says "wake up when you get a notification" though.

For a comparison. To anyone not understanding. Still don't get why it's not included but.....

[2.3+]NightLamp: Sleep better at night!

NightLamp turns your phone into an intelligent night light and clock, allowing you to sleep with ease.
If you need a little bit of light before going to bed, this app is perfect for you! It will automatically fade to black after at a preset time. Woke up during the night? Simply tap the screen or activate one of the sensors to turn the light back on again.
If you need a brighter light to move around the house, just flip the phone over and the flashlight will turn on! Woohoo!
You can control the light using various sensors on the phone:
-Flip the phone over to activate the camera flashlight
-Shake the phone to toggle the screen
-The phone responds to the ambient light, turning on and off as needed
-Voice recognition to turn the light on/off using hotwords
Note: Voice recognition is very beta right now.

***Alpha software, may blow up.***
The Android API that involves camera and sensors is a pain to support on all devices, because there is no unified way to do something like turning on the flashlight. So it would have to be supported for each phone model, which takes some time, so be patient as I work the kinks out.
Please do not give negative reviews due to crashes, because this app still needs testing to support a lot of devices...
If you do use the app, please do shoot me an email about your experience with it if possible
Tested to work on Galaxy Nexus so far.

Since it puts the screen at full brightness for a while, I highly recommend hooking the phone to a power source. If you have an AMOLED screen, the power drain from the app while the screen is dim would be small, but it would still drain the battery faster than if the phone is sleeping.
as I tap on Start, it shows a grey clock on white background but I hear a continuous BEEP once every second almost. Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 latest stock firmware ITV
that's the sound the voice recognition beeps to tell you it's listening.
disabling the voice recognition, the sound goes away as well.
You should also enable the android power saving so to reduce cpu and network usage like it almost does in standby.
Nice little app.

Google borked the speech recognizer code in recent versions (since Android 4.1) with a forced beep sound, I tried to mute it but it doesn't seem to work uniformly across devices, so I will have to change the speech recognition engine in the future.
I will look into power saving, thanks for letting me know!
You're welcome!
very nice UI =)

Added a new version where you can swipe the screen to adjust brightness of the front light. Additionally, speech recognition is no longer enabled by default due to bugs.
Cool app. I ended up using it for reading so I don't have to turn a light on but if I fall asleep then it'll fade down and all is well.
Works well on an Asus TF101 running 4.2.2 (katkiss v224 based on eos4). I can confirm the continuous beep bug too with the volume to silent fix.
One thing that would be awesome down the road would be to have a continuous fade of the display brightness over the course of the time you set. For example say you set the fade for 10 minutes, three minutes in it'll have reduced to 70%. Don't know if it's doable but it's just an idea.

[APP][2.3+] Magic Unlock

Hello,
I am the developer behind Magic Unlock
First of all, this app allows you to unlock your phone (after the screen is on) using a hover gesture.
Usage tips
- Lockscreen security needs to be off
- Lockscreen needs to be active
- Works only after the screen is on
- 'On' button means that the app is working
Tehnical data
- Uses proximity sensor for hover detection
- Android service with listening on ACTION_SCREEN_ON/OFF intents
- Proximity sensor reading only when screen is on (battery saving)
- And an adaptive service
Adaptive service settings
- Low priority - app running in background (might be laggy on some devices)
- Medium priority (adaptive) - running in background when enough memory is available / running in foreground (visible notification) when low memory is detected - [recommended setting]
- High priority - always run in foreground (visible notification) - [best responsiveness]

The app it's on a lightweight long running service that stays in background when in medium or low priority mode with no sensor listening
so the battery it's not threatened

Unfortunately no, only 2 boolean values 0/1 or 0/5, but you could think about apps using proximity in combination with light sensor that have many levels

i don't think that is possible, couldn't find any android api for the air gesture sensor
My guess is that they are using a device specific implementation that combines the light/camera/proximity sensors
Working great on Nexus 4, only thing as extra would be making it work together with light sensor, but light change too much based on enviroments
Nice
Works great on E4GT..Very responsive.Low on Ram. And combined with gravity screen off, its great.
Hope its not laggy

Testing on XPeria Z, installation was easy. Will see how it goes
Thanks!
Works perfectly on my Galaxy SII! (SGH-T989)
Will continue to use this for a week and see how it goes. Hopefully, it doesn't take strain the battery.
Ok so i'ts not working for me HTC One. Security and lockscreen are off. but phone goes straight to home screen on power button press.
Also are you thinking of making this work when the screen is off to turn it on? i.e. you could use accelerometer to test when the phone is taken out of the pocket, and at that stage turn the proximity sensor on and wait for hand hover? Seems simple in theory lol
EDIT: Ok Ok Ok last edit, so it works now but its impractical if you need security as someone can just unlock your phone normally (in my case pulling the lock sprite up) without knowing about the magic unlock functionality, on top of that its faster to unlock normally :/ Others seem to find it good though so I guess I'm a one off

I was reading the article. And he said tamagochi. Now. When I was a kid this was awesome. But as a phone app. It kinda sucks.... But a watch is totally the right form factor. I would totally use it. Maybe something like digimon where they battle... Yeah super wrist watch fun.
What other cool things would you guys want to see? There are so many cool things these watches could do, but I haven't seen many people talking about any cool ideas. Actually, info has been only trickling.
What is a digimon?

I'd like to see an app that automatically controls the the brightness of my watch, depending on what my phone's auto brightness setting is.
Since both these devices (LG and Samsung) don't have an ambient light sensor, a simple app like that would be genius. The other, simpler option, is to have an Android Wear app, that from 8am-8pm, full brightness, 8pm-8am (or whatever time windows you choose), lowest brightness. Simple workaround hack/app until ambient light sensors are built in.
Thoughts?

I'm not sure what the point would be. If you're using your watch... It's probably because your phone is in your pocket or somewhere lying idle, correct? If your phone is in your pocket, the lighting conditions would be different. Not to mention for this to work, your phone would need to leave the ambient light sensor on all the time, causing an additional unnecessary battery drain. Unless of course you're actively using your phone... But then that leads us back to... Why are you using the watch?

You still get your phone out every now and then. It's not like you don't need it anymore when you have the watch. And every time you turn the phone on it could push the brightness over to the watch. Turn down brightness when in the cinema, turn it up when it's sunny outside etc. Would be quite useful

Sure, but the brightness levels will change more often than you get your phone out. Doing this will put more of a reliance on the phone. Say you're in a theater, you pull out your phone and the watch dims. Now the movie is over and you head outside into the super bright sun. The watch will still be at minimum brightness until you either manually adjust it or pull out your phone to correct it again. That goes against everything Android Wear is aiming for.
Somewhat true... but I don't know about you, I'm pulling my phone out after a movie at least once before I head outside.. check all those messages and emails I received during that 1.5 hours because I'm really popular..
Again, the app idea is a BAND-AID.. not a true solution, as an ambient light sensor is, but a temporary solution. As @spiderflash says, I'd like it to remember the last brightness state of my phone, and push that over to watch, until a new status pushes over. It'd work fine about 80% of the time.

Better Band-Aid: Get a Moto360 (It has an ambient light sensor) Hopefully the thing doesn't cost $500 when it's finally released...they keep leaking all these goodies and it's starting to sound too good to be true. :|
I do think the tamagochi idea would be a winner...people seemed to go nuts over it when one was released for the Pebble. And we all know the Wear version could be awesome.
I'm trying to get back into development, and perhaps I'll end up making it myself...but I think Wear is a perfect platform for a nice car finder app. I already have one I love on my phone, but if I could navigate back to the stored parking space without taking my phone out? Perfect. Have it tie in to Google Maps (but start with ped navigation). Maybe incorporate a radar function, since these have pretty decent magnetometers.
I'd suggest a "share your current location with someone" app, but I just noticed Glympse has already taken care of that.
EDIT: for auto brightness, I just found this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danvelazco.wear.displaybrightness
It uses a combination of activity detection and local sun rise/set times to adjust brightness.
Good find for the brightness. O crank it during the day. And turn it down when I go to bed

screen turning on in my pocket

Ok this is starting to piss me off and no matter what I try nothing works. I keep pocket texting people when it's in my pocket because the screen comes on when I get a text. This just started a few days ago and I'm reaching the point where I think my sensor is bad. Basically when it's in my pocket and I get a text that damn pop-up comes up and turns my screen on and then "bdbsuchdvfufhdvshdhfhdhfh"
Yeah if anyone can help that'd be great. I've turned everything off and don't use aod
Edit. I found out how to get the pop-up to turn off. But the screen still comes on

i am having the same problem. Phone is unlocking in my pocket all the time for all sorts of reasons - not just notifications. I have the don't turn on if in a dark place like pockets setting to on, have tried locking the screen whenever i push power button, and several other things, but i am butt dialing, texting, deleting and everything else. Very frustrating. Serious problem.
Plus, when i have the phone in my pocket and then call someone from bluetooth headset, it turns on in my pocket, hangs up on them, or turns off bluetooth, or mutes them, etc. Again, wow, very serious, bad problem. How can i get this to stop?
I don't have greenify, and would prefer to not install it.
Is this happening to anybody else? Or has anybody found a solution? I've enabled / disabled any setting that has anything to do with turning on in pocket, proximity, gestures, smart lock etc and the phone is constantly turning on in my pocket and doing crazy things. Today, for example, the phone dialed my wife, paused / played music four times, changed play lists, tried to send a text to a relative, tried to make an emergency call, and changed some settings. This is making me absolutely nuts. It seems as though when a notification turns the screen on, the phone rubs in my pocket and creates "touches" that open apps and trigger events. This NEVER happens when the phone is sitting beside me, only when it is in my pocket. Something is really weird with the proximity sensor in this phone. BTW, I'm using the S8+.
^ Exact same problem with mine in the pocket. I wish functions like the bixby button would disable itself automatically in this situation.
Imagine you being seated in a library and your phone from nowhere start playing a loud music...
That's need to be fixed.
Same here. I've sent various text and calls. Even accepted calls and other stuff while in my pocket. Wonder if it's a bug in a recent update
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Have any of you tried this setting in accessibility? Easy screen on was my issue.
Happens to me all the time as well. I have the "keep screen turned off" slider on and the "easy screen turn on" slider off. This is a bad situation. Annoying and, at times, embarrassing. Needs to be fixed!!!
I've been having a similar issue with an S8 to a degree. A text notification would turn display on and worst for me was the phone would ring but answer itself in the pocket or as I moved it pulling it out of pocket. I don't know why but seemed to be worse with certain themes off the theme store. I've noticed that the issue went away when using the default Samsung theme or the 'high_contrast_theme' by Samsung of the few I've tried.
Same here. I had an S7 today did it too. Gotta be a bad sensor or something.
If anyone here uses Textra this setting could help. It was another that was causing my issue. It's been awhile since it has turned on in my pocket but it still happens sometimes. Mostly it brings up my camera.

Lightring Outer Display

Hello Community,
I have a question.
Has anyone noticed the LED Ring around the small outer Display on the Z-Flip?
It only appears briefly when the Device is plugged into Power.
I asked Samsung today how to activate it for Notifications.
They answered with a "thank you for the Idea..." message.
Can one of you experts write a mod to possibly use it as a notification LED? Similar to the Galaxy S10 and S10+ Camera Notch LED?
Thanks in advance for the Feedback.

Might be worth summoning @Jawomo on this one. He's the genius behind the other apps you mentioned. My Z arrives on Wednesday and I'm happy to help with testing etc.

I just noticed that on the wireless charger. Cool.
This ready yet?
stupid really to not have the possibility to configure the outer display for notifications, I don't want to see the battery % or date and a smaller clock would be enough and then notification icons, in my case I want the outer display being turned off all the time and when a notification arrives it lights up, like how you can configure @Jawomo AOD app.

Note you can see notification on the out display on the Flip
1) Enable edge screen -> edge lighting -> while screen is off and enable for apps that you want to alert
2) for the apps they need to alert as "pop-ups" otherwise it will not show on outer display
shameless demo/plug

for that cool lighting effect to along with the notification info - I am not aware of any way to do this (via public APIs/hacks).
thanks

can't get it to work, I still have to wake the screen up to be able to see if I have a notification, I want it to be turned off all the time and when I do get a notification it turns on and stay on until I read the notification, the inside display works like that when I'm using the AOD app by @Jawomo.

The best thing is to have an application that shows the always active led type notifications, on the external screen.
We hope they can create it.

Any news on this?
Any updates on this?
I hope this is still something being looked at?

Doesn't work for me either, and your screenshots are broken. Supposedly tasker can make a dot blink.
Files done work
